Seventy-one-year-old former game show host Chuck Wollery is up in arms about the prospect of a new assault weapons ban. For those of you who can’t or won’t remember Love Connection, Chuck was the original love monkey. Whether or not you’re down with his demonization of the left, having Chuck on the pro-2A side is like having Amanda Lyons cookin’ you breakfast. Just sayin’ . . .
I obviously agree with his general point, but not much of his messaging. Blanketing all anti’s as liberals, or demonizing the same means we lose 50% of potential progunners. I have several liberal friends who are pro-gun, and while I don’t agree with them on other stuff it’s nice that they have my back on 2A issues. He also fails to concisely address the myth of the assault weapon and the related ban. When someone brings it up I generally start by reminding them that when something is too good to be true it usually is, and when something sounds to bad to be true the same holds.

Agreed, the 2A and gun control is not really liberal or conservative issue to the average American. Yes, most anti-gun politicians are associated with the left, but not all. Besides my gun rights advocacy, I am a “liberal” minded person, and I image that many of the readers of TTAG are as well, or at least support liberal issues such as affordable/ universal health care, women’s reproductive rights, gay marriage, the legalization of marijuana, continuing social services and not providing more tax cuts for the ultra wealthy.
btw, I voted for Romney, so don’t get the idea I’m too liberal.
Fiscal conservative, social liberal is how I’d best describe myself. Honestly, this election was pretty hard for me, because the people who are most likely to support one issue that’s close to my heart (gun rights) are also the most likely to damage other issues that are close to my heart (women’s right to choose or gay marriage). The reverse is also true, of course. If I vote against the people that want to limit or restrict choice or marriage, then I’m voting for the people that want to limit or restrict gun rights. All you can do is figure out which of the important issues are the most important to you (and those you love) and vote accordingly.
Gun rights trump all other issues. If our guns are gone what will protect the other rights?

Where there are many “factions” of libertarians, the general gist is small government, financial and persona responsibility, and that if an activity isn’t harming anyone it should be legal.
I’d identified with them but still voted Republican for several years, but after the Republicans nominated the anti-gun, pro-big government Romney, I said screw it and voted for Gary Johnson.
All good points. However, the one thing you’re failing to look at is that your pro-gun liberal friends most likely vote for anti-gun liberal politicians.

A pro-gun liberal politician is a rare bird. I’m a conservative (in NY) so it doesn’t matter. Given a choice I will vote Pro-Gun rights over all other issues or qualifications.
Haha, I saw this about an hour ago, and was gonna get around to sending it in. I thought it was pretty good, and did a decent job of the “assault rifle vs. scary looking assault weapon” thing.
My only quibble was the Yamamoto “quote,” for while it is a valid point to make, there is absolutely zero evidence that he ever actually said those words.

I like his analogy that blaming guns for crimes is like blaming aircraft for September 11th. Whoever wrote this did overall a very good job with using simple metaphors for others to understand. I think we need to stop blaming ‘all liberals’ and start more often labeling ‘gun grabbers’ with our political criticism.

Hey we will take and support we can get right? As more and more libs or conservatives who have star power come out and promote 2-A values, it is a good thing. Sure we will have our Ted NRA-gasims but I think for the most part the message will be positive.

The Yamamoto quote is wrong. He did not say that there would be a rifle behing every blade of grass, because that would require some really small rifles, probably chambered in .9mm. What he said was “if we invade America, our a$$ will be grass.”
Have introduced several kicking & screaming “I don’t think I really want to try this”, liberal friends to the world of guns. I still find it pretty amazing how quickly they join the gun world.
It’s all about overcoming fear, a fear that arises from unfamiliarity. Once you’ve done that, the rest naturally follows.

The purpose of the Second Amendment is so people can protect themselves from future government tyranny. They need the tools to do this!
The term “Well Regulated” in the Second Amendment meant “Well Manned and Equipped ” in 1791 as was determined in the 1939 United States v. Miller case after referencing the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. The concept of Government Regulation, as we understand it today, did not exist at the time. United States v. Miller also determined that the term “Arms” refers to “Ordinary Military Weapons”. American Citizens have the right to Keep and Bear, which means Own and Carry, any weapons that a soldier carries into battle. That includes past, present and future weapons. The American people still have some work to do with regard to taking back their rights.
We are living in a post-constitutional America. The Wickard v. Filburn ruling was the final nail in the coffin.
Because of Fascist Delano Roosevelt’s threats against the court over decisions that struck down a number of his social engineering projects as unconstitutional, Congress gained the power to infringe on just about any liberty we enjoy.
Whereas before Wickard it required a constitutional amendment to ban alcohol, after it required just Congress passing a law and saying that whatever it was they wanted to be banned impacted interstate commerce (under the Commerce Clause) in some way (even if it didn’t).
NFA? Commerce clause.

The best thing about the NRA is that they are a One Issue organization. They don’t care if you are Republican or Democrat, Gay or Straight, For or Against Abortions, Capitalist or Communist… The NRA is only about Gun Rights. They make a point out of supporting any democrat who will carry the Gun Rights Banner.
