Chicago Mayor Stops Blaming Cops for the City’s Violence. Now She Blames Republicans

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot won election as Chicago’s Mayor earlier this year. Early into her term, she came right out and blamed the Chicago Police Department for the Windy City’s persistent, pervasive violence problem.

Today, after a summer of violence that left 167 murdered and almost 900 maimed, Lightfoot now has a new target to blame for the city’s years-long problems with gunfire and violent crime –  Republicans.

Chicago last had a Republican mayor 88 years ago in 1931. The Democrat machine runs every facet of life in Chicago. But Mayor Lightfoot points the finger of blame-shifting at Republicans for the rampant crime in her city.

This after Texas Senator Ted Cruz tweeted a message that pointed to a Breitbart story about the wholly unsurprising but still horrific body count from just the first half of Labor Day weekend.

Cruz has a valid point. Generations of gun control in Chicago has done nothing to stem the violence there. What’s more, Cruz notes how if you don’t prosecute the bad guys and take them off the street, they tend to commit ever more violent crimes.

That upset Heronner. She lost it.

“Keep our name out of your mouth,” she wrote. Poor Lori.

What Mayor Lightfoot failed to mention is that the average time-to-crime for those guns (per the ATF) isn’t two weeks. It’s 9.3 years. Clearly Chicago’s gang bangers aren’t sending their girlfriends over to Indiana to buy their guns and bring them back for a weekend of score settling.

Not only that, but Lightfoot contradicts her own Chicago Police Superintendent. Eddie Johnson blamed a lack of consequences for bad guy misbehavior as the top reason for the violence.

Two weeks ago, he fingered judges and prosecutors for the city’s revolving door criminal justice system that’s famous for not sending career criminals to jail.

From Fox News:

The superintendent of Chicago’s beleaguered police department shifted the blame for the city’s gun violence epidemic from the cops to the courts, blaming judges and prosecutors who refuse to jail repeat offenders arrested with illegal firearms.

Supt. Eddie Johnson, speaking on Monday at Chicago Police Headquarters, said his department can “only do so much,” but noted “it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why shootings continue to be a problem in Chicago.”

One simply has to head over to CWBChicago.com to see story after story about career criminals getting arrested for serious crimes. Even when prosecutors actually bother to pursue charges, judges usually release the defendants on their own recognizance.

Part of that is down to Illinois’ new affordable bail law. Part of it is simply lenient judges.

Take this case, today’s top story as reported by CWBChicago.

But wait, there’s more: Judge gave sweetheart bail agreement to man who served 8 years for federal gun violation

The story of a Cook County judge who nixed a repeat gun offender’s no-bail order, set bail at $100,000, then released him without requiring that he actually pay bond is even more ridiculous than we knew.

It turns out that the defendant in the case not only has a lengthy criminal history in Illinois, but he also did eight years of federal time for being a felon in possession of a handgun.

As CWBChicago reported exclusively on Tuesday, 47-year-old Joaquin Urcino was arrested in July after prosecutors say he fired a handgun from the second floor of his home in Little Village. Cops say they found a gun in his pants pocket, another gun near a window where they saw him standing, as well as five grams of cocaine in his backpack.

A judge ordered him held without bail, but Urcino had much better luck when he appeared in front of Judge Carol Howard on Aug. 22. That’s when Howard agreed to strike the previous judge’s no-bail order and set a new bail of $100,000. Then, Howard did something special. She told Urcino that she would put him on electronic monitoring “in lieu of bond” and agreed to let him come-and-go to work, too.

That’s a pretty sweet deal. Especially since the original crime, according to cops, involved Mr. Urcino illegally firing his illegal gun out of his window.

Here’s another story from earlier this month about a guy out on bail for one gun case who then (allegedly) shot and killed another man and maimed still another.

Again, from CWBChicago.

Man fatally shot one victim, wounded another while free on recognizance bond and electronic monitoring, prosecutors say

It’s been 18 months since Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart warned that he was “alarmed” by the number of accused gun offenders who were being released on their own recognizance, sometimes with electronic monitoring.

“This needs to get fixed quick,” Dart told the Sun-Times in Feb. 2018.

It hasn’t been fixed.

Yesterday, 18-year-old Antwane Lashley was in bond court, charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with a shooting on Aug. 23. Lashley has been free on his own recognizance with electronic monitoring since prosecutors charged him with possessing a handgun illegally this spring.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle wasted no time criticizing Dart’s concerns last year.

“I believe it is our responsibility to keep these matters in context and not contribute to sensationalizing them,” Preckwinkle told Dart in a letter days later.

As recently as Friday, Preckwinkle called concerns about people committing violent crimes while free on affordable bail, a “fear tactic.”  She has also defended easy bail conditions for gun possession. Some people who live in less-safe neighborhoods feel the need to carry guns for their own protection, she says.

The Cook County Board Chairwoman defended the low bail amounts and criticized publicizing this tragedy that never would have happened if this defendant had remained behind bars.

And people wonder why the Windy City has earned its moniker Murder City USA.

Last summer, The Chicago Tribune drilled down into some of the causes of the perpetual violence. They wrote this as part of the editorial, “Why is there so much shooting and killing in Chicago?

…There can’t be a rational explanation because Chicago’s plague of urban warfare isn’t logical; it’s horrifically cruel and self-destructive. A 2017 University of Chicago Crime Lab study was able to quantify how much of the city’s gunfire victimizes residents of struggling neighborhoods: Five South and West side communities with 9 percent of Chicago’s population (Austin, Englewood, New City, West Englewood and Greater Grand Crossing) accounted for nearly half the city’s increase in 2016 homicides. African-American men ages 15-34 made up more than half of the city’s homicide victims in 2015 and 2016 while accounting for just 4 percent of the city’s population. Almost 40 percent of victims had prior violent crime arrests.

“One of the ways Chicago is different is that our social conditions are not anything like those now in New York City and Los Angeles,” Jens Ludwig, director of the Crime Lab, told a City Club audience early this year. “We are not just the most segregated city in America, but the level of concentrated poverty we have in our neighborhoods is unlike anything in Los Angeles or New York. You would not find an Englewood or Garfield Park anywhere in Los Angeles and New York.”

The dynamics at play, the ones Chicagoans want to understand to end the bloodshed, are complex. Gang life is a substitute for hope in isolated neighborhoods. Every shooting invites a retaliatory attack. In a city of 2.7 million people, a relatively small number of criminals — perhaps 5,000 to 10,000 thugs and drug dealers — are driving a large share of the violence. “It’s the same individuals that continuously commit these crimes,” Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

And then there’s the issue of the gangs owning plenty of members of the Chicago city council.

From a timeless 2011 Chicago Magazine story:

Gangs and Politicians in Chicago: An Unholy Alliance
LAWBREAKERS, LAWMAKERS: In some parts of Chicago, violent street gangs and pols quietly trade money and favors for mutual gain. The thugs flourish, the elected officials thrive—and you lose. A special report.

A few months before last February’s citywide elections, Hal Baskin’s phone started ringing. And ringing. Most of the callers were candidates for Chicago City Council, seeking the kind of help Baskin was uniquely qualified to provide.

Baskin isn’t a slick campaign strategist. He’s a former gang leader and, for several decades, a community activist who now operates a neighborhood center that aims to keep kids off the streets. Baskin has deep contacts inside the South Side’s complex network of politicians, community organizations, and street gangs. as he recalls, the inquiring candidates wanted to know: “Who do I need to be talking to so I can get the gangs on board?”

Chicago continues to continue its violent decline under 88 years of Democrat machine rule. Of course, just like professional alcoholics, the city’s leaders and their supporters (and the voters) find it a whole lot easier to shift blame and use demagoguery to avoid taking responsibility for the mess their policies have nurtured over the decades.

Bigstock

Better to eat, drink and be merry than confront the real problems that they believe only impact certain people in certain parts of the city.

And just like drunks, they will continue to do so. And to shift the blame. Until and unless voters finally hold them accountable.

Or, maybe it is the destruction of the nuclear family and traditional values for 88 years that is the root cause of Chicago’s current situation.

Chicago now has a nonpartisan election system. The top two vote getters in the primary runoff in the second round general election. Nobody got anywhere near 50% in the primary. 11. avatar Vlad Tepes says:

The mayor is correct when she says guns come from Red Neck States that have no laws governing the second hand sale of guns which are then transported and sold in Chicago. The Chicago study proved that second hand guns were responsible for much of Chicago’s crime and not all of them were stolen either. The average age of the guns were 11 years proving they went through many hands because vetting of second hand guns is not done in Red Neck States. Many then end up on the streets of Chicago.

The same old Right Wing Propaganda of “lets lock everyone up” has not worked down through the years as the U.S. now incarcerates more people than any other industrialize country on earth and it has done zero good in combating crime. Even China that has 4 1/2 times the U.S. population locks up way less people.

Rather than focus on the causes of crime the Gangster Criminal Republicans simply refuse to spend any money on real solutions.

They refuse to fund drug treatment programs,

they refuse to stop the export of jobs overseas,

they refuse to fund job training programs that would give low skilled workers free training programs for better jobs.

Even small Countries like Germany spend far more money on job retraining and it does not all come from Socialist Programs as German Industry actually spends more money than the German Government does on retraining while the Greed Monger Republican filth that runs our industries spend little money on retraining and tell workers to spend their own money on retraining that for most part is a financial impossibility especially on the low wages the criminals in the Industrialized U.S. pay their workers. What little they do train workers in the U.S. declined by 6.8 per cent in 2018. Yet the criminal C.E.O’s often make millions a year in wages and millions more in perks. Its Capitalvania at its most obscene and corrupt.

Today in Chicago we now have as many as 4 generations of people that have never had a decent paying job as they once used to have in the 50’s and 60’s and with no retraining programs either on the private industrial level or with any government programs it has been a prescription for social and economic disaster. All this filters down for screams of more gun ban laws because for Republicans that is the cheapest way out and they damn well know it and secretly endorse it.

A recent Harvard Study showed that if you are low income you are far more likely to rise up the economic ladder in Canada that has more affordable health care, more job retraining for both adults and refugees and immigrants and a more affordable over all educational system. Children of refugees and immigrants are now being assimilated in less than 2 years and some of Canada’s larger cities are seeing the economic benefits of importing and training so many new immigrants and refugees. Exactly what in years past the U.S. used to do but now has abandoned and to add stupidity to ignorance has now even cut way back on legal refugees and immigrants under the jack booted regime of Herr Drumpf and the goose stepping racist Storm Troopers. The Republican credo has always been “we are are own worst enemies”. Just as Hitler sowed the seeds of his own destruction and that of his nation so too have the Republican U.S. Criminal Nazi’s now done to the U.S.

The U.S. today is by far the very worst industrialized country on earth to live in with more violent crime, less opportunities to move up the economic ladder, unaffordable health and drug care, education that has become unaffordable , stagnated wages now for over 50 years and corrupt corporate welfare, crime and greed surpassing anything even the corrupt rich of Ancient Rome could have ever in their wildest imagination ever dreamed up or even thought they could get away with.

Great, great point jwm. If Republicans are all wrong, we should still replace Democrats with a different party since Democrats have been unable to overcome all of the badness which Democrats claim that Republicans have caused.

I wondered growing up how a lot of my family came to being Republicans. I do not agree with that statement. Nevertheless, let’s say it is true for the sake of argument. That would be because a major portion of the populace has destructive values and desires. And since the people of government come from that populace and represent that populace, that government will facilitate destructive values and desires. And more government will not change that, no matter how large the government is or how much power it has.

In summary Vlad Tepid, the problem is simply our fundamentally flawed human nature, nothing more and nothing less. No government of any flavor or stripe (or political party) or size can fix our fundamentally flawed human nature. The best that government can do is hold evil-doers accountable for their actions, which never happens all that well since our government is simply a cross section of our nation’s fundamentally flawed humans.

How are Republicans supposed to convince a poor urban male teen that he should actually marry his “baby momma” and actually raise their baby? How are Republicans supposed to convince poor urban female teens to stop having children that they have no means to support?———————quote

Again you are shouting that White poor people do not live in the same way or make the same mistakes as black people. YOUR STATEMENT IS RACIST BEYOND ALL PRETENSE. You blame the problems of poverty on the poor rather than the economic and social conditions that created the poor. You scream black people are sub-human the same way Hitler screamed the Jews were sub-human. Its the same racist philosophy Hitler had which is to demonize a minority and claim your own race is “the master race” and only one worthy or capable of success. You ignore the history of white privilege. You deny the complexity of poverty. You state the poor are at fault for not succeeding. You have stated the Government should not help the poor or increase their educational level because it might cost you a few pennies. Your statements make an educated person or even an uneducated person who has some vestige of humanity retch when reading your statements.

As long as we permit people like you to be in power our problems will only grow worse until society collapses from within and then your white privilege and your money will do you no good as you will finally have shot enough holes in the boat to sink the entire nation forever.

And please refrain from using the statement “pray tell” you blaspheme the very word “pray”.

        1. avatar Vlad Tepes says:

All of my copying and pasting seams to be going right over your head so I will dumb it down for you. White People are bad and need to be punished because they have white priviledge. The government needs to tax White People more and give the money to people who are not white because White People were not fair to people who are not white in the past. We socialists will take all guns from all the White people first then we will take all the jobs from the White People and give them to people who are not white.

Do you see how Racist your are now?

Reagan destroyed U.S. family values when he shipped all the high paying jobs overseas and forced women into the workforce which led to high divorce rates and broken families. Its white kids who are committing mass murder not blacks. Explain that one Grand Wizard.

        1. avatar Vlad Tepes says:

And dont forget Nixon he forced all of the steel mills in the US to shut down and move overseas thus causing the unprecedented levels of student loan debt we have today. Plus Gerald Ford who made Apple make all of its iPhones in china. I suppose you are going to tell me that didnt cause global warming! And best of all was Eisenhower who tried to buy Greenland and sell California to Mexico. That obvoisly caused millions of South Americans fleeing oppression to sneak across our border and go on welfare.

I know all about the history of the US government!

    7. The same old Right Wing Propaganda of “lets lock everyone up” has not worked down through the years as the U.S. now incarcerates more people than any other industrialize country on earth and it has done zero good in combating crime.

And “common sense”, “sensible” gun legislation has contributed a lot to the incarceration problem.

  12. avatar Timothy Toroian says:

Another stupid leftist. I think straw man purchase sentences should be increased from 10 to 20 years and the buyer be charged with whatever crime the recipient commits to be served consecutively. Let’s see how some dizzy woman loves some schmuck. No plea bargaining no early release. Prosecuted and enforced federally by statute. Similar treatment for felon in possession. If they want guns laws try enforcing those on the books.

    1. avatar Southern Cross says:

But the Democrats would lose nearly all of their community organizers.

    2. avatar Someone says:

I respectfully disagree. What you propose implies that the violence problem lies with the tool and access to it. People should be prosecuted for bad acts, not for possession of any object.

Murderers in Chicago have lower than 1 to 10 odds they will get caught. Even if caught, they will probably not get convicted. Those few who do get convicted get light sentences and soon they are back on Chicago’s streets. Why is anybody surprised that they keep on killing?

  13. avatar Tim says:

Baltimore. Chicago. L.A. Philly. San Fran. D.C. New York. Portland. Detroit.

What do they have in common? Retarded, corrupt children like Vlad Tepes are running all of them into the ground.

Common theme. Refuse to take responsibility and blame everyone else for your woes. When you cant get one story to stick, change it up, blame some other guy.

Time for someone to build a wall, but not at the southern border. Lets start at shitcago, that shit pit by the bay and nyc and let them sort out their own issues.

Face it, the lady isn’t bright enough to know truth from fiction. As long as Americans continue to elect ignoramuses like her, we’re doomed. I have very little hope for the outcome of Nov 2020. Our electorate has been tragically mis-educated, for at least two generations. Now comes the reckoning.

  18. avatar Felixd says:

Chicago is a shit hole with a “mass shooting” every weekend and the media refuses to report it. It’s not “gun violence” it’s gang violence. Go to secondcitycop.com and heyjackass.com to see what no one reports. Look at the weekly totals, see who the offenders are, read the actual crime statistics, and who doesn’t do what in the Cook County legal system. Go see it yourself because no news outlet will carry the truth.

    1. avatar gp says:

Yup! Here in sh!thole Rockford, 80 miles from Chicago, we have the same violence, committed by the same kind of people, and we are utterly helpless to stop it. Our LE is undermanned, our city leaders are clueless suckers, our “news” media dutifully hide any real news, and our school district is an unbelievable abomination. Our commonest violent criminal is “paroled felon with a gun.”

All our “elites” are now celebrating the upcoming arrival of a gambling casino, because we apparently don’t have enough crime, poor people, slot machines and addicts already.

Nothing will change for the better, because American voters are dumber than rocks now, thanks to the traitorous teachers in American schools and colleges. We lost the culture decades ago, and now we will reap the whirlwind.

      1. avatar James Campbell says:

Casino gambling is coming? That’s great news, just look what that did for Atlantic City, NJ.

        1. avatar gp says:

Oh yes! Geriatric hometown rock star Rick Nielsen is lending his support to the Hard Rock Casino people to make it happen. He will probably make more money from his sponsorship in one year, than he made in his entire musical career.

We already have legal slots all over town, in dingy pits full of dead-eyed zombie slot addicts. I know one retiree who blows his whole purse at the beginning of each month, has to borrow for the rest of the month to survive. You ask ten slot players this question: “In your lifetime, are you net positive, or net negative playing slots?” Every one of those pathetic losers will claim they are net ahead, and it can’t possibly be true. That is how insidious that addiction is.

  20. avatar J says:

Chicago is not the only urban crap hole in this country. It is never the firearm used, but the person using it as a tool to commit the crime. No new or media outlets want to broadcast the murders that happen in our urban areas everyday while Democrats are campaigning across the county to be president to make them look bad.

  21. avatar WI Patriot says:

“Chicago Mayor Stops Blaming Cops for the City’s Violence. Now She Blames Republicans”

Because that what dems/leftists/liberals do, blame everyone else to avoid taking the responsibility themselves, and this is just another fine example of that…

  22. avatar Someone says:

She was much closer to the truth when she blamed the police. Chicago’s 9.5% murder clearance rate doesn’t do much to dissuade the would be murderers.

President, we need to TEAR DOWN THAT WALL AROUND CHICAGO!… oh, wait – you mean there isn’t anything actually preventing people who don’t want that kind of lifestyle from leaving? Hmm, that’s odd…

  25. avatar RidgeRunner says:

    It’s clear that Chicago’s leaders
Don’t want to solve this problem because they don’t see it as a problem. Politicians and gangs are in this together. Light sentences, gangs do as they please, just blame whitey, the right and the NRA, and Maintain status quo. It’s contained, voters get to retain victim status, beat goes on just keep their name outta your mouth!

    1. avatar Southern Cross says:

Gun control isn’t that heavy in Chicago and average folks can get a conceal carry permit. Compare that to NY and Baltimore where such things are impossible. Yet NYC crime is comparatively low, Baltimore’s is high.

It’s almost as if guns aren’t the issue.

    1. avatar Southern Cross says:

You mean it could he the people and culture?

According to the genius of the carpathians, if the guns were gone then this violence wouldn’t happen.

Nationally they’re all saying “supporting that rich geriatric white lady who lied about being a minority to scam other feeling people like myself will sure make me feel good and virtue signal for my wine aunt peers.”

  31. avatar Randy Jones says:

I had hoped Lori Lightfoot would find a way to turn things around. Not so far. but what sticks out to me is the chart she threw back at Sen. Cruz. The data is 2 1/2 years old. I would think it could have been a bit more up to date. To point at Indiana as the state that causes their problem makes little sense, you can practically walk there from Chiraq. I would also bet that NW Indiana has a fair amount of criminals from Chiraq arrested there.

At last report, which has been over a year ago, Chicago was only prosecuting about 5% of gun crimes, the rest were dropped or plea bargained. People make decisions and with those choices come consequences, some good and some bad. Without those bad consequences behavior doesn’t change.

    1. avatar Dennis says:

You’re not talking about deterrents are you? Liberals say they don’t work, they just hurt people’s feelings!

  32. avatar burley says:

Unpopulare opinion #1: The Republicans are in part responsible for gang warfare in the inner cities because it is their failing drug prohibition programs that have created the (thriving $100B) black market for drugs. End Prohibition and watch the (bulk of) violence go away. They’re fighting over drug turf, pure and simple. The COPS are armed with military grade hardware, so why should they not be? The “Ware on Drugs” is the single largest reason we have massive, militarized police presence and frightening tolerance for that same groups abject violence.
They (the Republicans) also have NOT fought for the rights of citizens in Illinois. If Republicans were all that great, they’d spend fully half their time arresting treasonous democrats for their crimes against the Constitution.

These guns coming in from Indiana must be some kind of “smart” gun, because they don’t seem to start shooting until they cross the Chicago city line!

Seriously though, does she even look like the mayor of a major city? She doesn’t even get that part right.

    1. avatar Dennis says:

But she has “all” the qualifications, like our last president! If they were “smart” guns, that clown would be in serious jeopardy!

      1. avatar bryan1980 says:

You’re right; gay, minority, and female. She ticks all of the boxes. In fact, she might be over-qualified!

  35. avatar cg123m says:

If you want to go down the rabbit hole and really see the effect of laws and violence, look at those ATF Tracing reports for each state.

9mm is the king of calibers in every single state.

Chicago accounts fo 80% of all firearm confiscations in the state of Illinois.

Not a single rifle caliber makes the top 10 caliber list for Illinois, New York, or California

In strict gun control states, large cities dominate confiscations overwhelmingly, but in less restrictive states the confiscations are evenly spread around the state. Even in Washington, Seattle only barely beats out Spokane. Compare that to Illinois where Chicago accounts for over 80% of all confiscations in the state.

This is to say, large cities with restrictive gun laws take people’s guns more. Usually because they were involved in a crime. So in states with hefty gun control laws, where large cities usually overwhelm the politics of small towns in the rest of the state, crimes are being committed in the cities at a much higher rate than in states with less restrictive laws.

When you deprive a state like Illinois of their rights, you are attracting criminal activity to your population centers.

Billings, MT isn’t having a gun crime issue.
Birmingham, AL isn’t have a gun crime issue.
Even Seattle, WA isn’t having a gun crime issue. For the time being it is still perfectly legal to carry, open or concealed, WA remains shall issue and there is no assault weapon ban (just a legally challenged training and waiting period….).
California is having a gun crime issue
Chicago, IL is having a gun crime issue
Washington, DC is having a gun crime issue.
New York, NY is having a gun crime issue.

The Mayor of Chicago argues to ban Chicago; it’s corrupting law-abiding guns?

      That’s bold.

  38. avatar Bierce Ambrose says:

If Chicago gets a say on our laws, do we get a say on theirs? I have a few notions…

  39. avatar John in Ohio says:

    “firing his illegal gun”

Was it stolen? How was the gun “illegal” under the 2A? Are you sure it wasn’t the act of a person that was “illegal” and not the gun itself?

  40. avatar Ronald West says:
