Cheaper Than Dirt now selling .9mm ammo

You may recall that Cheaper Than Dirt took modern sporting rifles off its site after the Newtown massacre. And then took all its firearms off the site. The company claimed the timing was a coincidence. Still do. Something about inventory controls. We ran into a couple of CTD types in the SHOT Show media lounge. We asked them to pass along our invitation to their jefe to write a full accounting of the debacle. * crickets chirping * Anyway, it seems that CTD’s feeling a bit small these days. The above ad was ripped from a reader’s browser, immediately after the GLOCK 42 was introduced. I wonder what that means . . .

    • The number of asinine “Pre-ban” whatevers they sell, the fact that they immediately started moving decimal points to the right on anything related to the AR, the AK, 9mm, 12 gauge or merely painted black after Newtown to cash in… yeah, they can FOADIAF.

        Not only that I would prefer to by from others companies on principle, but they are actually cheaper than “Cheaper” Than Dirt.

  6. They got “300 AAC Blackout” wrong too. There’s no period on the front of that number in the official name. No really; look it up if you don’t believe me.

  9. Lower than dirt is still dead and buried to me. They can stay that way as far as I’m concerned. Doesn’t matter how much money they give away to try to absolve themselves. They shouldn’t have tried to screw us over and placate the politicians in the first place.

  11. Ok, so going back to Cheaper Than Dirt I can find multiple MSR’s listed as in stock with an “Add to Cart” option. Am I missing something? Did they resume selling? Not gonna buy from them, just wondering. And, wow, .9 mm? That’s gotta be some TINY rounds!

  14. Well I deal first hand with graphics people butchering industry specific terminology all day, but that still won’t prevent me from pointing and laughing at CTD in light of their politics and apparent refusal to man up to their unpopular decision.

    • Yeah that’s the thing, little mistakes like that are way down on the list for me when we have people trying to legislate .30 caliber guns that fire 30 clip magazines in a second.

      • I believe the weapon capacity was actually 30 magazine clips, not 30 clip magazines.

        Along the lines of 30 pick nits as opposed to 30 nits picked.

  15. a marketing gimmick hoping someone with millions of eyeballs picks it up to give them free advertising cause they cant afford the real thing?

    They can only afford to pay people min wage in the marketing deot?

    • I’m certain that’s not it. And while I’m aware of the idea that “any publicity is good publicity, as long as they spell your name right,” I’d be hard-pressed to believe that any mentions they receive here do them much good, since every mention is followed by a volcano of vitriol in the comments section.

  20. Don’t ever forget the companies that put the screws to law abiding gun buyers. Not just cheaper than dirt, but also dick’s, and every hoarding pissant that bought all the ammo at Walmart to resell at quadruple rates.

  21. I mostly remember them as the company that was trying to sell used aluminum G.I. mags for $99 during the panic, complete with a little graphic next to the price that told us how much we’d “save” by buying from them.

    Cheaper Than Dirt is dead to me.

  22. I hope CTD goes out of business. They are nothing but vultures capitalizing on the gun owners every time we need them most. They could do a buy one get one free deal and I’d still tell them to kick rocks. That goes for any other company that thinks its nice to gouge the hell out of the gun community to make a quick buck.

  23. stopped shopping at CTD a couple years back, when they started charging shipping costs several times on a single order if they had to ship items from more than one of their warehouses. sorry CTD, your shitty logistics aren’t the customers’ problem. I can’t think of many other companies that do such a thing.

        • Bought 2 bricks of 22 the other week for $21 each.

          Routinely go in to Academy and buy at pre-New Town prices. Academy irked me when they capitulated and took MSRs off their website after New Town (and have since put them back) but they HAVE kept otherwise normal prices…

        • Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favor of how CTD acted, but there is also a supply/demand thing going on. In my area, you still can’t get .22 unless you get up early and be at the door when they open, on the right day. So while some people may be able to pick it up off the shelf and thus see people who raised prices (CTD being a bad, extreme example) as assholes, in my area, if someone was selling bricks for $40-50 and had them on the shelf, at least I’d know I could get some if I was completely out and really needed it. If my choices were to either be at Gander Mountain at 8 a.m. three days a week to get lucky or be able to walk into Bob’s Gun Shop on Saturday afternoon and grab some, albeit at a higher price, I’d go to Bob’s, because 8 a.m. trips to Gander Mountain aren’t possible for me. Sadly, nobody around me has it on the shelf for the taking at any price.

          I realize that buying online is another option, WikiArms and such, but I was just trying to provide a counterpoint.

        • Retail cost is what wallyworld, academy, and decent LGS are selling them for. $20 to 25 for a brick and $7 to $10ish for 100 count of mini mags. You won’t see them every time but can pick em’ up here and there. I saw that CTD had minimags for $69 and various bricks for up to $199 at one time. That is shameful IMHO.

        • I don’t disagree about the super-high prices of CTD, but I haven’t seen .22LR at my Walmart (any of the 3-4 that are within 15 minutes of me) in at least nine months, and I’ve tried. I’ve asked when they get deliveries, I’ve gone by early on those mornings, etc., and I’ve still never seen any. Therefore to me, Walmart’s price on .22LR is no more relevant than what Bob’s Gun Shop in Fairbanks, AK is selling it for. It’s only “street price” if you can get it on the street.

        • Matt in FL, if you ever find yourself a little farther north, The Bass Pro in Tallahassee regularly has bulk .22 in stock, to the point I don’t even compulsivly by a brick everytime I’m there. It’s not bargin basement prices, but you can get plinking ammo for 5 to 6 cents a round.

  25. I will never purchase anything from CTD ever again. I will never even grace their website with my presence again. As far as I am concerned, they can FOAD… wait, they are ALREADY dead to me. No matter what they do, unless of course, they get rid of everyone of the staff members who makes decisions and replace them with people who understand firearms, the people who purchase firearms and their accessories, and the Constitution. Then… just then… maybe will I look at their website. And that goes for ANYONE of the retailers that pulled “Assault Rifles” or any other firearm from their shelves after Newtown because they are afraid and do not understand the world they live in.

  27. I listen to Coast to Coast AM once in a while and I noticed a few days ago that CTD is now one of their sponsors. As if George Noory’s canned stupid-ass questions and droning yes-man patronizing of every nutjob weren’t enough to drive listeners away. I usually just had it on in the background while I did work or gamed or something, now I get lame CTD plugs. I think I’m done with C2C during the week, I don’t mind the weekenders like John B Wells and especially George Knapp, though, and they don’t push this crapola.

    • CTD also advertises on Outdoor Life and the Glen Beck show. I used to hate Beck, sort of enjoy his show more now, but hearing him sell CTD like they’re the gun owner’s secret to low prices is just hilarious.

      Coast to Coast is just great entertainment. I’ve heard some of the craziest of late-night radio callers on that show. The shows on angels and biblical prophecy seem to bring in the worst.

      The commercials that go along with C2C are just bizarre… Freeze-dried foods and gold coins galore.

      • Beck selling CTD is no different than Beck selling Goldline International. Either way, he’s a fast-talking huckster repping for a service that you can get better and cheaper elsewhere.

      • I love the C2C Carnivora plugs. I want to know more about how Ronald Reagan had it smuggled into the White House. 1-866-VENUSFLY…sounds legit.

  28. I live where CTD is (and sad to say, bought my first firearm, a Mosin, from them back in 2007), They’re the only Glock Blue Label dealer in this area.

    I still refuse to give them my cash.

  30. I had a .223 Remington UMC purchase order of 200 rounds from them, sent my credit card info, and never received an email confirmation. Strange. I called in and was able to confirm my order, and requested an email confirmation and receipt. I was advised that the email was coming. It never arrived. A few days later, I was advised that my order was cancelled because they no longer had my order in stock. Only it was in stock – they just jacked up the price. I had the “opportunity” to buy the same item at a higher price. Screw that.

    I haven’t purchased a thing from CTD since.

    • Everyone says that happened. Strange (not really) but when I bought my last (and Final) order from CTD I got it in a timely fashion and with no price hikes.

      Now I made my order within a couple weeks of mid December but that same time period has people getting bilked out of money left and right. Both me and a friend made some hefty ammo buys that went through easily. Now the day or so after, all the ammo and mags I bought were skyrocketing in price.

      I got lucky but I would never make that bet a second time. And trusting them was a weak premise. I made the buy as my normal ammo retailers were bare. I got the hit at CTD and Cabelas and did what I could only out of necessity. I would’ve just went without if I had been a day later though. I’m as outraged as if they’d shafted me like you. I had a coworker tell me the same happened to him trying to get 5.56 for a Chris Costa course for himself and the Mrs.

  31. CTD can kiss the whitest part of my Irish ass. Removing all ARs quickly followed by all firearms from their website after Newtown, in a knee jerk reaction like that, then during the gun and ammo frenzy, jacking up their prices the way they did ?!?!? While yes I understand that it’s their business and they have every right to do so, but that still dose not make it right. there are plenty of other places online that I can order my favorite ammo from. I will never give CTD my money again.

  35. 31 grain 0.9 mm projectiles have a wonderful sectional density (3.527) vs a 22lr (0.088) or even a 150 grain 30-06 (0.226)

  37. CTD wanted to kiss ass of all the anti’s and turn their backs on gun owners. So we as the gun owning public turn our backs to CTD. Plain and Simple.

  38. CTD price “gouged” yes “gouged” mags and ammo after Sandy Hook. Ex. Colt 30rd. AR Mags, $99.00, It all came down to contradicting just what the name of the company is! They moved at light speed to stick it to the customer worse than most. I’m done with them.

  39. CTD lost me as a customer when, after Newtown and the AR/magazine shortage that followed, they were trying to sell 30 round AR mags for $125 each!

  40. Their first mistake was not being “Cheaper Than The Competition” and their second mistake was shipping orders from multiple warehouses and charging separate shipping for each one… Everything following New town was just pooh icing on their turd cake.

    Basically they prey on uneducated firearms consumers.

  44. Do you read any of the NRA publications? Watch NRA TV shows like American Rifleman? Do you watch Shooting Gallery and a few other TV shows? Guess who sponsors them? CTD, among others.

    Shouldn’t we be pressuring these venues to shun CTD?

  45. Their prices are not so cheap as they suggest. It can take a lot of time and effort (repeated phone calls) to get CTD to remove you from their mailing list once you are on it.

  48. I priced an ankle holster on CTD and another online retailer. The price for the holster was close to the same on each. The difference was CTD would have charged me about $16 to ship an under $30 holster to me while the other retailer charged $4 for shipping. I went with the other retailer. CTD is a shipping and handling gouger.

  49. CTD can go to hell for artificially inflating their prices and selling things for outrageous amounts.

    I even spoke with an ex-CTD worker a few months back. He said he quit because of how shameful the company is.

  50. Used to buy quite a bit from Cheap Thieving D-Bags, but not a penny since their antics. Its a free market (well, sort of) and they are free to do what they will with their prices and practices, but so am I with my money. I’ve been spending a bit more at other places sometimes now, but I’ll patronize those that did not try to gold rush their customers. It may be ivory tower thinking but it is my money and CTD can die on the vine.

  51. I just left this message on their contact page online

    “Hey, Heard you were selling 9mm ammo now. Thats great… well good luck with that cuz I’ll never do business with you again. Remember how you screwed everyone so bad during the gun-ban craze last year? Well we all sure remember!”
