“A country where it is considered aberrant to possess near-military grade weapons and where guns were again banned in many public places would likely have very different politics around guns than the country that pro-gun and anti-gun advocates live in today.” – Henry Farrell [not shown], This is how guns became normalized in American life [via nytimes.com]

  1. Politics would be supplanted by wholesale (and at times, selfishly freelance violence) and the ‘gun argument’ would be settled, in relatively short order for the undecided and wrongly-decided at the NYT.

      • That is a bit hyperbolic. The Russians didn’t end up speaking German and the Japanese didn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of winning, more or less arms in civilians hands wouldn’t have made a difference.

        • Mr. Nighthorse learn your history. Admiral Yamamoto is known to expressed his concerns about invading America because of the armed civilian population where there were thought to be guns behind every blade of grass!

        • S/He’s a bit history challenged. Since the loser’s lost, they would have always lost, even if not opposed. I’m guessing s/he also believes in destiny w/o freedom of choice and thinks logic is some useless subject that only nerds used to take in college courses. 🙂

  2. “A country where it is considered aberrant to possess near-military grade weapons and where guns were again banned in many public places would likely have very different politics around guns than the country that pro-gun and anti-gun advocates live in today.”
Yes, it would be the enlightened politics of North Korea.

  3. Our way of life isn’t sustainable. The martial aspect of the right to bear arms has an expiration date. Florida begins the death roll with the GOP gun control package next week.

    • Look for it to contain a bumpfire stock ban and an over 21 age requirement. The later of course, begs the question: Our young adults can’t buy any semi-auto firearm until they are age 21. But they can Join the Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines at 17.5 yo and train and handle firearms with full auto selector switch?

      What’s wrong with this picture

        • Okay, 21 for all semi-autos. Then make it 18 (16 with parental waiver!) for ANY non-semi-autos!

I have never understood (I know the concealment factor) why 18 year olds were okayed to get LONG guns, which are far more effective in terminal ballistics than handguns are…

  4. My the “Times” have changed it seems. “At Newspaper Row, across from City Hall, Henry Raymond, owner and editor of The New York Times, averted the rioters with Gatling guns, one of which he manned. ”

New York City Draft riots July 1863. Gatling guns seem like the ultimate military grade weapon of mass destruction at the time. Yet a private citizen owned them and used them to protect his property.

Do as I say not as we do to protect our property and lives.

  5. Since that quote made absolutely no sense at all, I went ahead and read the ‘opinion’ piece and have to say the author must be high on jenkem. He posits that since they banned smoking in bars (in Ireland) people have stopped smoking in bars. This didn’t happen because the smokers were afraid of getting a small fine but because non smokers were emboldened to complain. Therefore, even if a ban on semi-automatic weapons wouldn’t take the the millions already in private ownership out of circulation, it would change the culture.

The problem with this hypothesis is that I don’t think that if the students in Parkland, Florida had felt emboldened to complain about being shot, it would have made much difference. The problem isn’t the people who politely take their cigarettes outside to smoke them, it’s with the people who will blow smoke in your face if you complain. Attempting to shame responsible law abiding gu n owners isn’t going to change the behavior of criminals. In fact it could embolden them due to the perceived lack of potential armed resistance.

  6. “Attempting to shame responsible law abiding gun owners isn’t going to change the behavior of criminals. In fact it could embolden them due to the perceived lack of potential armed resistance”. ~Gov. William J Le Petomane ~

It does, look at Mexico and Brazil; Armed robberies in broad day light.
Go to the Active Self Protection Channel on you tube. 90% of the videos are of strong arm robberies. seems gun control is working pretty D@^^N well there.

  7. From the link:
“They have also seen a concerted effort to widen the number of places in which people are allowed to have firearms. This can be understood as a massive effort in norm engineering. If many people carry guns around with them as part of their everyday activity, and if there are ever fewer places where people cannot carry guns, then guns will seem to be an ordinary and normal part of everyday life.”

I agree. Seeing him say this supports the argument for open carry.

    • “This can be understood as a massive effort in norm engineering. “

Or it could be a massive effort to prevent people from having to leave guns in cars where they are relatively easy targets for theft.

It’s almost like these guys have no idea what they’re talking about.

  8. That place has existed in many fucked up places around the world throughout history. None survived to be copied.

One of them was England, and US civilians donated and loaned their firearms to them.

No one’s going to be permitted to turn the US into a donee / borrower state.

  9. The mask slips…

The open / closed carry, brandishing, packaging, and similar laws are about denormalizing guns. More bigly it’s about denormalizing taking care of yourself. Why do you have that water, knife, lighter, gun, power strip, raincoat, whatever?

I don’t understand driving around in winter without a tow rope, maybe a shovel, and of course a blanket. If you don’t have a couple flares in your car, you’re just silly. Why? Stuff happens.

They’re normalizing helplessness and dependence. That’s bizarre, and ought to stop.

  10. Maybe when they ban all semi-autos and try to confiscate them, they’ll order the Broward County Sheriff’s Department to execute the confiscation.

They’ll be a quick end to that with those cowards running the other way at the first sight of an AR-15.

    • I am now reading that there were 3 other sheriff’s deputies who showed up and disn’t Go in either. Just hunkered down behind their cars waiting for SWAT and Coral Springs cops are pissed about it!!

  11. N.Y. Times? LOL!

I wonder how all the 21st Century Walter Durantys are doing and what anti-gun propaganda they have planned for us this week.
