The Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, was gunned down by an off-duty Turkish police officer as he spoke at an art exhibition earlier today. The assassin was identified as Mevlut Mert Altintas. The US Embassy in Ankara has been placed on lockdown.

The pistol used by Altintas is clearly visible in the photo below.

The pistol appears to be a Sarsilmaz K2P 9mm Turkish police model.

The K2P has a standard capacity of 16+1 rounds. It uses the CZ 75 type internals and inside the frame rails and is imported into the U.S. by EAA.

Update: an excellent candidate for the pistol appears to be the Canik TP9,  domestically produced in Turkey and imported to the U.S.  by Century Arms.

    • I’ve seen several people on different websites talking about the shooter’s trigger discipline like it’s suspicious. Anyone who practices safe gun handling is going to develop the muscle memory to keep their finger off the trigger when they aren’t consciously deciding to shoot something. Just because this guy decided to shoot a Russian Ambassador five times doesn’t mean all his built up muscle memory is forgotten.

      • I’ve read elsewhere is was an off duty police officer, elsewhere read that he was current/former Turkish special forces. But yeah, it’s something when a terrorist has better trigger and muzzle discipline than any hollywood actor.

    • Been out of the 0311 field for a few years now… I don’t regularly practice with any weapons and yet my finger discipline is still around.

    • I was surprised also in a still shot I saw that his finger was off the trigger along the side of the weapon even though he had to be stressed. My thought was immediately he had serious training to maintain that discipline. Obviously don’t agree with what he was doing but hope I could maintain the same discipline in a defensive situation.

  1. Guys, stop. We don’t need multiple articles about this. We are raising the profile of a murderer by making every nuance of his deed a high-profile article.

    • Um, yes, it is. A second terror attack just happened in Germany, which is why it may not be on-screen at the moment. But it is a “big” story.

        • Pretty sure the point was that it already was reported by TTAG… about an hour and a half and 2 stories before this one… hence the comment about not needing multiple articles for this.

    • Remember how WWI started.
Turkey is a member of NATO, so it Russia decides to retaliate militarily, we will be required to defend Turkey.
      Think on that.

      • We may be obligated but that really isn’t a requirement. After all what is Turkey going to do (aside from expel the bases at Izmir and Incirlik) if we don’t support them?

It wouldn’t be the first time we let an ally who got on the wrong side of Russia swing in the cold cold siberian breeze.

      • They should probably be expelled from NATO because they are funding terrorism. A lot of our “allies” are funding terror in an attempt to keep the acts out of their country. But wherever you have fundamentalist Islamofascists you’ll have the occasional terrorist actor.

      • We need to come to our senses fast. Turkey is Muslim and Muslims are generally our enemy. It’s as simple as that. Time to tell Turkey we’re no longer honoring that part of the NATO treaty. Turkey is not now a secular state in any real sense. It is an Islamist hellhole much like Pakistan. Past time to reassess our relation with such a potential enemy.

  2. There is much more than a simple murder. The perpetrator clearly identified allegiance to the Syrian resistance.

The Russians are reaping blowback from their meddling in Syrian affairs.

    • I would say that this is as much as (if not more of) a result of Erdogan moving Turkey to an Islamic government. Obviously Russia’s behavior didn’t help, but we don’t have police mowing down politicians from any country stateside, despite some very strong desires to do so.

  3. Well, Turkey is a NATO member and if Russia wants. They can claim this as a reason to go to war since their Ambassador was killed by a Turkish Government Agent.

  4. Other news outlets are reporting the assassin presented police credentials to gain access to the press conference. The assassin either did his homework, or really was an officer. The previous commentator noting that the guy placed his finger straight after taking the shot suggests that the latter might be true.

  5. That gun in the screen grab is most certainly NOT a CZ variant like the K2P. The bore-axis is much too high. It’s more likely a SIG or variant thereof.

  6. Sorry dean but i don’t agree with your assessment. I can’t say what gun he is using but to me the example gun you show doesn’t match. The slide of the murder’s gun overlays the frame midway on the gun. Your example photo shows the slide inside the frame at the midpoint. My other weaker argument for it is that there is no safety showing in the perp photo.

    • Some quick research tells me that survivability rates for a gunshot are over 75%. Far higher than for knife stabs. Also that most police departments have well below a 50% hit rate. But, I guess you’re right, one incident to the contrary clearly overturns all previous and long standing data. Good job buddy

      • Eh, there’s a huge difference between those who can shoot and those who can’t. Plenty here think cops can’t ever shoot well, and you’d almost think handguns are incapable of killing people based upon the keyboard commandery that often graces TTAG.

So again, this is evidence, although evidence to the contrary certainly exists.

    • It seems to be common police practice among a certain variety of Turkish cops. Slightly more macho than it is dumb, and man, is it macho. I’m very impressed.

  7. Hey! Deano! As TTAG’s resident Sarsilmaz Critic, let me point out that the pistol is clearly an ST9 in 45, known to American low-brows as the SARGUN. The contour, the barrel, the caliber. Grim news aside, I’d love to review it…

  8. Russia will take revenge against Syrians (who apparently had nothing to do with this), while the Turks will take revenge against the Kurds (who apparently had nothing to do with this).

Because everyone knows that you should never let a good crisis go to waste.

  9. My condolences to the Russians for this cold blood Jihadist attack against one of their ambassadors! I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a put-up job by the Turkish government that appears to be in bed with ISIS/ISIL, or whatever is left if AL-QAEDA! And No, Russia has been our allies. We shouldn’t be throwing our allies under the bus because the corrupt, militant, and twisted Democratic party has aligned it’s with Middle Eastern Terrorist organizations, and the Quite Hositle Chinese government…Under the guise of Political correctness…The DNC declared it’s own war agaist Russian Federation President. Putin…While the Obama administration did everything it could to “protect” Jihadist Terrorism in the middle east…While the Obama administration, and Hillary” Benghazi” Clinton allowed our Troops, Spec ops, and ambassadors to come into harm’s way ! No! US special forces, and the Russian Federation. Spetsnaz should be working together to eradicate these brutish tribal barbarians operating on a hositle to all theocracy…These are “acts of war ” against the citizens of both our countries!

  10. Thats clearly a tp9 series by canik 55. Doesnt look at all like the one in the post…. Man the misinformation is ridiculous from this site as of late. Theres no front side serations in the picture.. Jeebus
