“Melbourne Mayor Kathy Meehan told Florida Today the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between a woman who worked in the Melbourne Square Mall food court and the woman’s husband,” foxnews.com reports.

She said the man had a gun and shot his wife. A co-worker of the woman then tried to get the gun away from the husband and was shot in the struggle and died. The mayor told the paper the husband then apparently shot himself. The paper said a police official briefed Meehan on the shooting.

One wonders how that might have gone down if the good samaritan had been armed. No guarantee of anything of course, but a better chance of survival.

Protection? Retribution? Suicide prevention? Something.

  1. rumor is, the assailant was wielding a military style ar15 automatic shotgun that he tucked into his pants for concealment. in the deadly .9 mm

  2. I thought it was so easy to take a gun away from someone. You mean the “gun safety” crowd wasn’t telling me the truth?

    • No no, you’re just supposed to comply with demands and not fight back…

What do you mean he wasn’t robbing her? People don’t just point guns at people just for killing.

    • Actually, I have it on good authority that it IS a simple matter to take a gun away from a killer. All you need to do is shoot him six or eight times first.

  3. Damn I live beach side near Melbourne and was just down there at the mall. I always carry There since the chances of something happening with soo many people goes up. I do not think its a gun free zone fyi. I’ve never noticed a sign.

  4. Nobody had a hot coffee to throw in the guy’s face?

I learned in Tae Kwon Do that if you’ve decided to attack an armed person when you aren’t, employ an effective distraction.

    • No, no, no. A much better strategy for the good Samaritan: he should have peed or vomited on himself or blew a whistle. Surely that would have convinced the armed attacker to break-off his attack! … No? Go figure.

      • No no. He should have peed and vomited on himself while he simultaneously blew a whistle and threw canned goods. Such a sight would have shocked the shooter into submission long enough to be disarmed. The anti’s had it all figured out. They just didn’t put it all together.

  5. Also I THINK it was a bit more than Good Samaritan. Again just an initial report but the good guy who got shot was supposedly in a relationship with the woman. Her and the hubby were supposedly separated

  6. bunch of crap…I just love the po po self pat. “We have the shooter contained”….wonder if that means yeah perp off himself but will make oh so sure and check each store…you know… just in case he cloned himself.

  7. The Melb Sq Mall is indeed a lame gun free zone. All of the “code of conducts” signs on all of the mall entrances has an entry on there that say weapons are prohibited or something to that effect, however, Florida signs do not carry the force of law. If you’re made you can be asked to leave, and if you don’t, you can be trespassed.

That sign has never stopped me because my and my family’s lives are worth more than the hurt feelings of all these idiots.

  8. The bizarre Twilight Zone aspect of this is that having a GFZ and denying the right of effective self-defense by having a gun is for “employee and customer safety”.

    Yep. Worked well.

“But it would have been worse if someone else had a gun” .

  9. I wonder if the wife being 20 years younger had anything to do with the domestic dispute. For you good Samaritans, if you are not armed and not trained in defensive armed tactics, experienced in the use of firearms or lack police training, just duck and stay out of the line of fire. This perpetrators are emotionally distraught enough that normally once they are done they kill themselves and save us and the police the effort. This guy killed himself and unfortunately, the good Samaritan is dead as well. There is no dishonor in ducking away from a firearm and a bullet, just ask the police and the military, you get to live, breath and fight another day.

    • No offense but I wouldn’t feel comfortable cowering wheter armed or not while watching a man screaming loudly at a woman, which would get my attention and then witnessing the woman be shot. I will not after witnessing such an act just wait for the evil man to take his own life or empty his magazine into others.. The unarmed person saw an act of evil committed and they knew that action was required, even at grave personal risk in order to save another person from harm. Cops are paid to only care about their own safety, and some armed citizens will do exactly what you suggest and become Conceded Carriers with no personal gain in blindly helping another.
In the military the brave soldiers who willingly sign up to be warriors for the ideals of the Constitution and bring a righteous fight to the government declared enemies believe in “Death before Dishonor”, as do many Chrisitan civilians, since the wicked shall perish and the righteous prosper. The military servicemen only duck until they find out where to fire back after being fired upon and then they use superior firepower to neutralize a threat. The police are now utilizing these rules of engagement against their fellow citizen without the hassle of the defensive fire precursor.

      • Of course, Death before Dishonor may refer to the debut album by rapper 2 Pistols or an American hardcore band from Boston. Let’s not forget the 1987 American action film directed by Terry Leonard. And then there is the song from Five Finger Death Punch’s 2007 album The Way of the Fist, preceded by the 1989 album from Dennis Brown containing a song of the same name. Then there is the fifth studio album by the Scottish punk rock band The Exploited. Don’t forget the ROH Death Before Dishonor, a professional wrestling event.
