“A desk officer was shot at four times Monday night after a man opened fire in the lobby of the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Traffic Division in Mid-City,” losangeles.cbslocal.com reports. “The suspect walked in the lobby of the building, located in the 4800 block of Venice Boulevard, around 8 p.m. and started shooting, Sky9′s Kevin Takumi reported. An officer returned fire and the man was struck. The desk officer, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with minor injuries, reportedly to his shoulder. The suspect was described to be in critical condition.”

  2. Godspeed to the recovering officer. The cynical part of me wonders if the suspect will recover and shoot up at “gun free zone” next time.

      • I agree Kris, you did make an “odd and stupid comment”. This site is called The Truth About Guns for a reason; His “cynical observation” is a valid one.

        The fact that this attempted mass murderer didn’t choose a GFZ is what is amazing; which is also why there were no severe injuries except to the attempted mass murderer.

        • I think if he was an intended mass murderer he would have gone for a gun free zone vice walking into a police station. Could have been a suicide by cop attempt…

  3. Dang. I’m out here in LA for work. I thought carry permits were tough to get here in LA county…oh wait, another criminal using a firearm to commit a crime without any regard for the law.

    Shooting on a military base: Over in 15 minutes, many injured, too many unnecessary deaths.

      • I believe the politicians and military brass have figured this out completely, what they haven’t figured out is how to spin it in a way that does not give people more of their Constitutionally protected freedoms and diminish the elites’ monopoly on power.

    Now the cynic in me has to point out we just lost one of our arguments…… Shootings occurring in gun-free zones and not police stations or gun ranges.

    We didn’t completely loose this one, but every low-information mouth-breather out there is going gasp and clutch their pearls and oversimplify by pointing out that there was a shooting at a police station.

    • Shootings can happen anywhere. A criminal will generally have the element of surprise on their side.

      MASS shootings rarely/never happen in non gun-free zones.

      • Except for the coward that shot Giffords and the other people in Arizona and this attempted one; all other mass shootings have been in a GFZ.

    • You are missing the point- there WAS a lunatic, with a weapon.
      Remember, attempting to regulate weapons has no effect on lunatics.

      What is different here, vs theaters, schools, and other gun-free zones,
      where citizens are not allowed to be armed, to defend themselves,

      is there was someone ARMED in this gun-free-zone to defend themselves.

      or put it this way-

      GUN FREE ZONE PROTECTED MEANS BAD PEOPLE DIE.
      (well, stopped anyway- kudos and RESPECT to the cop, for taking seven shots, reputedly and still stopping the bad guy)

      GUN FREE ZONE UNPROTECTED MEANS GOOD PEOPLE DIE.

      Lets go just a bit further…IN CALIFORNIA THAT MEANS EVERYWHERE,
      pretty much, whether thats a school, a park, a mall, the beach, on your street outside your home,

      GOOD PEOPLE ARE UN-PROTECTED because the average citizen can not get a CCW, and open carry banned by CA STATE LEGISLATURE including THE SECOND MOST INFLUENTIAL DEMOCRAT recently indicted for GUN SMUGGLING.

      AND, since you simply cant post a cop on every street corner, it means
      BAD GUYS ARE ARMED, but
      GOOD PEOPLE ARE DISARMED AND GET KILLED.

  24. I hope the officer recovers quickly. Now just think if officers couldn’t carry at the office, like other gun free zones, how many victims would we be looking at in this situation. It’s very plausible that a good guy with a gun stopped what could have developed I to a much greater tragedy.

  26. I’m not so sure this was a suicide by cop attempt. I don’t have any empirical evidence to back this up, but generally most of the ones I’ve seen or heard of in the area I live, the subject usually creates a situation where he draws a large amount of police attention to himself, maybe fires off a round or two in no particular direction , or points his firearm at the dozen or so cops with their weapons already drawn and gets shot.

    This seemed like more of an attempt to bring harm to others than himself, but like I said it’s just a gut feeling

  27. I’m surprised a LA office would be so vulnerable. Even here in podunk towns of a thousand people or less the cops sit behind layers of bullet-proof glass in little isolation cubes you have to be buzzed through three doors to get at and even then you’ve just gotten close enough that the layers of bullet-proof glass have a tiny speaker hole and a little slot to slide any paperwork. And that’s the public desk. Even through a pistol permit here is cheap and a given it’s still like double keying and retinal scanning into NORAD command to go pick it up.

      Very much so, for the exact reasons illustrated in your question. They know there’s only one or two of them at the station as a general rule, they don’t have literally hundreds of cops, lawyers, admins coming and going every hour, and they likely aren’t quite as psychotic as LAPD.

      In any big Muni, throw on a uniform that will appear familiar and you can stroll in an out of most areas of the house without any questions.

  30. Not that uncommon..happened at the 9th precinct in Detroit years ago…guy walked in with a basketball in his hand, and an AK concealed under a jacket…he dropped the ball and opened fire. Officers circled out the back of the station and engaged and dropped the shooter.

    The officer made a great move by tossing the trash can as a distraction. Fortunately all the good guys lived.

According to the LA Times website “Though initial reports indicated the injured officer was wearing a ballistic vest when he was hit, LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh said Tuesday that was not the case. Beck later said a mushroomed bullet led police to believe a vest had stopped one of the rounds.

    Instead, Beck said, the bullet hit a backup pistol in the officer’s left pocket.

    It was “truly a miracle,” the chief said. “Having that backup gun saved his life.” ”
    (Just not in any way he likely ever imagined.)
