Obama commutes gun convictions

President Barack Obama, the “we have to get tough on gun crimes” president, today commuted the sentences of scores of firearm offenders among 231 pardons and commutations. It marks the most acts of clemency in a single day by any president in American history, according to the Washington Examiner.

One of the appointed hacks in the waning Obama administration described it this way: “Over the last eight years, President Obama has given a second chance to over 1,100 inmates who have paid their debt to society.” So says Deputy AG Sally Yates.

Let’s face it, President Obama has never been tough on crime. He’s been tough on the police, but not so much on violent criminals.

One crack dealer released as part of an Obama plan to empty federal lockups of those with crack cocaine convictions killed two kids, ages 7 and 10, to prevent them from testifying against him in the murder of their mother. Judicial Watch has that story:

A convicted crack dealer who left prison early as part of the Obama administration’s mass release of federal inmates has been indicted by a grand jury for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend and her two kids in Columbus, Ohio. The gory crime drew national attention because the children, ages 7 and 10, were murdered to eliminate them as witnesses in the brutal massacre of their 32-year-old mother.

Then there are the “undocumented immigrants” that the president refuses to deport. Just today, Breitbart reported on nearly one million illegal aliens who are convicted criminals that Obama has allowed to stay in the country.

A new report estimates that there are up to 820,000 illegal aliens in the U.S. who have escaped deportation under Obama’s regime despite that many of them have been convicted of serious crimes including murder, rape, drug offenses, and other crimes.

While some estimates say there are up to 2 million criminal illegal aliens in the U.S., a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies finds there are at least 820,000 which, as the Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard notes, is still larger than the populations of four states: Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont, or Wyoming.

Yet that’s not enough. Some “criminal justice reform” advocates wish to empty our prisons entirely and are pushing Obama to give clemency to “as many as possible” before January 20th.

The Washington Examiner has more:

President Obama on Monday granted 153 commutations and 78 pardons.

According to the White House, it is the most individual acts of clemency — 231 total — granted in one day by a U.S. president.

The president has now commuted the sentences of 1,176 individuals, including 395 life sentences.

White House counsel Neil Eggleston said the move signifies Obama’s “continued commitment to exercising his clemency authority through the remainder of his time in office.”

Obama has just 32 days left in office and has faced pressure from criminal justice reform advocates to shorten as many sentences as possible before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

  1. These are Obama’s natural allies and friends….as opposed to the law-abiding, hard-working, productive, tax-paying citizens of country, who he set out to crush from day one of his reign.

    • But David Olofson stays a felon why again?

Fuck this failure of a President, History will not be kind to you Obama, but then again no one was, is, should be, or will be…

      • He isn’t one of Obama’s children, that’s why. Ugly truth, but there it is. Obama’s convinced that if he breaks stereotypical crack-addicted black men out of their stereotypical prison fate, they will burst forth with vitality from their stereotypical chains (placed upon them by white oppression) and become tomorrow’s leaders. An insane ideology borne from the inability to discern between cause, effect, reality, and emotion, but there it is.

  2. Obama should be held personally responsible for every single one of these felons who re-offend during the time they would have been in prison, and with over a thousand to work with, there should be plenty.

  3. There is no such thing as a gun crime, TTAG.

    “tough on the police”

That must be why Byrne grants skyrocketed in the last eight years.

  4. Those 820,000 convicted felon illegals are the first ones to be actively located and deported.

I’ll be surprised if the deportations go beyond that. I have no problem with someone who is here to work and contribute…

    • Have you seen the cost of illegals?

Its cheaper to deport them, and if/when we do we never have to worry about them voting against us ever…

      • They won’t be able to vote, Henry.

(And, boy, is that ever gonna piss the left off!!!!)

When we (finally) get our conservative Supreme Court, we will have voter ID laws ruled constitutional.

Our logic is impeccable. After all, you have to have legal ID to buy a gun or board an airliner, and no one (except a few of us on the gun part) has claimed getting on an airplane is a civil rights issue… 🙂

        • Except that the polling places are run by local officials. Do you really think they will make an effort to exclude anyone, or will they do anything they can to let “their people” vote?

That’s happening right now, BTW. With all this talk about Russia, I’d like to see an investigation of numerous Mexican nationals voting in our elections. Yes, illegal aliens are Mexican nationals. Does anyone doubt this happens?

        • Illegal aliens aren’t just Mexican, they come from Central and South America, too. As well as from several other places, using Mexico and Canada as the through portals.

        • “Except that the polling places are run by local officials. Do you really think they will make an effort to exclude anyone, or will they do anything they can to let “their people” vote?”

          Poll watchers documenting…

  5. More and more the US resembles a 3rd world country. It’s typical for 3rd. world despots to use blanket pardons to empty prisons only to promptly begin filling them up again.

  6. Oh , HELL ! He’s just opening up space to house all the political crooks Trump is going to jail when he drains the swamp . His new leaders will round up these newly released felons in short order after 1/20/17 .

    • Given his cabinet picks, he isn’t planning to drain the swamp but rather pump toxic waste into it. Violators of national security, lobbyists, bankers who helped crash the economy, people with no expertise for their positions… there are not picks signifying a draining of the swamp, but making it worse.

  7. After Comrade Sanders attains the Red House following the communist Revolution, you GOP TH UGS and RETHUGLITURD GUN NAZIS will all be exterminated.

  8. Well, I guess the 2nd amendment coalition will be just in time to re-enforce our 2nd amendment rights…And force states like NY, NJ, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, etc…To honor the 2nd amendment clause of “the free citizenry.” Since, now our street are run rampant with hardened criminal ilk thanks to Prez. Obama…..

    • “Well, I guess the 2nd amendment coalition will be just in time to re-enforce our 2nd amendment rights…And force states like NY, NJ, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, etc…To honor the 2nd amendment clause of “the free citizenry.” Since, now our street are run rampant with hardened criminal ilk thanks to Prez. Obama…..”

Excuse me, Aaron, I will try to be gently pedantic here:

      1. There is no such thing as “2nd (or Second) Amendment rights.” There is only a Second Amendment guarantee that our natural right to keep and bear arms “…shall not be infringed.”
      2. “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” I fail to see any clause in that sentence even resembling “the free citizenry.” It does say. “…the right of the people…” and gives no other qualifiers.

      • Cliff, even though everywhere else in the Constitution, the phrase “the people” refers to the entire citizenry, in the second amendment it only refers to those the people in charge think are worthy of gun possession.

        I read that somewhere.
        What?
        …Oh
        Never mind.

  9. Perhaps we could put all these recently released prisoners on rafts and point them towards Cuba. You know, return the favor Castro did us.

  10. Given the fact that criminals keep committing crimes, These 1,100 criminals Obama has pardoned are likely going to be arrested and convicted in the new future.

    • strych9, The law Kasich signed getting rid of gun free zones of colleges etc has no teeth. It allows the administrations of those colleges and other places to “vote whether to allow concealed carry on their campuses”. You KNOW darn well these libturds administrations will never allow concealed carry… Wyoming had such a law about gun free zones in schools etc, and the libturd administrations of these places promptly stated publicly that they wouldn’t allow concealed carry. Toothless laws are a waste of time and money for state legislatures to even consider. I’m 73 years old and I don’t have time to teach a jackass legislature to sing soprano….

      • School administrators have no effect on me. I will carry on their campus whenever I’m there, just like always, but now even if I am caught, there is no problem. If a student is caught, he may have to find a new school but he won’t be a criminal or a prohibited person. Don’t make light of genuine advances, it makes you look like a fool.

        • If you get caught and the administrators have declared their campus gun free, you will be arrested. They have the choice to be gun free or not. Don’t look like a fool yourself.

  11. Don’t forget the GITMO crowd. That’s not stupid that’s pure evil islamism, and I’m going to tell my great grandkids about the fing POS that tried to give us more of the one world caliphate that Ohole is brewing.

THEY ARE ALL HIS RED SHIRTS AND BLACK SHIRTS

He’s “sticking around” D.C., post inauguration, to generate new [POS] dems

    • Hopefully Gitmo gets the expansion it deserves soon. Then we can start shipping democrats there so they can have all the alone time they want with BLM and Daeshbags.

      • It definitely looks like he’s “putting a crew together” over a thousand pardons/commuted sentences so, yeah, “GITMO II: Ohole comes home” might soon be in theaters. Wonder if the releases are how he’s (over) funding his retirement [did he get any $$$ for it???].

Also wonder what the muslim / Christian count was. If any of that’s offensive then SO ARE YOU.

  12. Good. Just more prison space for Trump to refill, and he will. I don’t care what Obama does. I only care what Trump does after he becomes president.

    • Obama, his wife, and the Clintons are ALL completely irrelevant, it would be nice if they were not mentioned for 4 years.

  13. And Obama is probably saving Hillary and company’s pardons for last.
Heck, he probably has one prepared for himself.
After all, we already know from historical precedent you don’t even need to be charged to be pardoned by the president. Nor has there been a self-pardon test, so that’s possible.

Of course, presidential pardons only cover federal crimes…state crimes would still be in play, as we see in New York’s investigation of the Clinton Foundation.

As to his pardoning illegals…that’s just wrong.

Apparently to Obama, Laws (he doesn’t agree with) are just Made to Be Broken.

  14. Man, I wish I could be on a Hawaiian golf course right now. It was -5F here yesterday.

Say what you want, but being unemployed has its perks.

  15. Obama did not just release any killers. Here is a full list from Washington Post https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/12/19/obama-just-granted-commutation-to-more-than-150-people-here-are-their-names/?utm_term=.b4af6a4d9265

Wendell Callahan was released in 2010 and gave Obama credit for it. But Obama did not pardon, commute, or order his early release. On top of that, Wendell Callahan killed those 3 people after he was released. Not before.

    http://www.snopes.com/wendell-callahan-meme/

    • That’s the point; that the release of these hardened criminals will result in the commission of crimes that would not have otherwise happened were the criminals still being punished in accordance with the law.

  16. Am I the only one who doesn’t appreciate the clickbaity title here? The Washington Examiner said he mostly pardoned non violent drug offenders and only 42 had some firearm trafficking. That was strangely omitted in TTAG article, leaving only “scores” as the number.

As for the guy who murdered the kids, that happened after Obama pardoned him, so no way the president could have known.

Now, I don’t think the president should be pardoning anyone, and I don’t know what those people with life sentences did, but the president shouldn’t have the power to just override the laws for anyone he likes.

    • Unless this article has been updated, it was clear that the cracks dealer murdered the mother and children after early release.
Why are people using this to dispute the article or defend the early release program? Use a parolees that stays out of trouble as a defense. Not a triple murderer.

      • Because I want TTAG to be as honest as possible. I’m not defending Obama, I just said he shouldn’t be pardoning anyone. I like the site, and therefore when it does something I disapprove of, like use a clickbait title and omit important information, I complain, even if the complaints are minor.

Overall, I don’t have a huge issue with the article, just the way it was presented.

Obama shouldn’t have pardoned anyone, the people he pardoned will probably end right back up in the slammer, but this article just made it look like Obama released tons of violent armed robbers and murderers…. Which he very well may have (Just because they’re convicted for drug distribution doesn’t mean they didn’t do other things that they were not caught for) but the article makes it seem more deliberate.

      • I am making the distinction because I see a clear difference between “An early drug release kills three people” and “Obama pardons a triple murderer”. One is an honest description of the dangers of drug use which could lead to an honest discussion about whether our current drug sentencing is too much or too little. The other is an outright lie. Obama didn’t even pardon this guy.

        • The article already made that distinction.
I’m pretty sure TTAG is biased against Obama but I didn’t see any false reporting on their part here. Point it out if you could.

        • In the middle of an article about Obama pardoning and commuting sentences is the line “One crack dealer released as part of an Obama plan to empty federal lockups of those with crack cocaine convictions killed two kids, ages 7 and 10, to prevent them from testifying against him in the murder of their mother.” Perhaps I am unique in how that line reads amid the context of this article. Is it an outright lie? No, but neither is it really honest.

BTW, this guy was let out in 2010 and did his killing in 2010. So 6 years later in an article about pardons including this is misleading at best. Tell me how a 6 year old story about an early release is relevant to yesterday’s pardons and not just clickbait to make Obama’s already bad decisions look worse. if you can

        • Look, I like TTAG and I dislike Obama. But 1, this guy isn’t a pardon or a commuted sentence. 2, the story about this crack dealing murder is 6 years old. 3, everyone knows the majority of offenders are likely to commit other crimes whether they’re released early or not. If you can prove to me that this guy was pardoned by Obama and was let out this year and wouldn’t have killed anyone had he only served his whole sentence… then I’ll bow out and agree that TTAG got everything right. Until then, using a 6 year old story about a guy who wasn’t pardoned…. as proof that Obama’s pardons from yesterday are so bad…. is crap at best. I expect better out of this website.

      • No. That was unclear wording. All the article said was “as part of an Obama plan to empty federal lockups of those with crack cocaine convictions” and “as part of the Obama administration’s mass release of federal inmates”

Okay, now I read that, while having no knowledge of the law that shortened the sentencing for drug convictions, and the article starts off while talking about the people he pardoned or commuted sentences for then instantly switched to the guy who killed the kids. Now, given the context, I took the first quote to mean a basic Obama agenda, and the second quote to mean the people he just pardoned and commuted sentences for. This might not be deliberate misleading on the John Boch’s part, but it had the effect of just being confusing. Better wording would have been “As part of a law signed by Obama on X date” and that would have removed the confusion.

A presidential pardon is a right granted to the President of the United States by the U.S. Constitution to forgive a person for a crime, or to excuse a person convicted of a crime from punishment.

The president’s power to pardon is granted by Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution, which provides: “The President … shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.”

      [….]

Under the Constitution, the president may pardon only persons convicted or accused of federal crimes and offenses prosecuted by the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia in the name of the United States in the D.C.

    • Obama didn’t pardon him. He was released due to a law that shortened drug offender sentences which was signed into law by Obama, but Obama himself did not pardon this guy or commute his sentence. An important distinction.

      • Okay, Thanks for clearing that up. That was thrown in there with the people he pardoned and it made the article even more confusing and misleading.

        • Yes, Boch is taking quite a lot of artistic license with this one, tossing in a lot of irrelevant discussion. Kind of par for the course as a professional journalist, though.

    • As for the guy who murdered those kids and their mother, instead of being released early he should have been shot in the face several times, then innocents would still be alive. People finding some redeeming social value in using this instance to argue for the brilliance of Osama been Buried are so depraved and indifferent to actual horror that .it is unbelievable.

  17. Elections do have consequences.
If any of his kiddies pull any shit with the wrong people there won’t be any more trouble. The vast majority will reoffend since nothing changes the circumstances that landed them in jail to begin with.

  18. Let’s see:
    — accommodating people who have used guns in violent crimes
    — it’s “common sense” to restrict (and sometimes insult) people who been neither criminal nor violent
    — while saying, politically “they bring a knife, we bring a gun” and “punch back twice as hard.”

I’m getting the idea that he’s not particularly bothered by violence, or crime, but by who does it, and to whom.

  19. Lemmee guess, they all are oppressed black men, who just need sympathy from whitey :/ god why do so many people think Obama is awesome?

  20. I suspect the power to pardon was given with a well-armed citizenry in view, so that if a president made a mistake it would be taken care of in short order.

  21. I believe he is still way behind the average in terms of clemency. Yes, go look it up. Certainly until this point he had granted fewer than anyone.

  22. “nearly one million illegal aliens who are convicted criminals that Obama has allowed to stay in the country”

That’s not what the quoted text says.
