BREAKING: Mandalay Bay Attack in Las Vegas; Full Auto Fire on Crowd at Country Music Concert

UPDATED:  Media reports indicate 20 or more killed and hundreds injured in an attack on a country music festival outside the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas.  Police report at least one suspect shot and killed and the manhunt continues for others.  The audio track from a Facebook Live video contains what sounds like long strings of full-auto gunfire.  People describe the gunfire as coming from the upper floors of the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

From the AP, via The Oregonian:

LAS VEGAS — At least two people were killed and dozens wounded during a shooting at an outdoor music festival on the Las Vegas Strip late Sunday.

Dozens of patrol vehicles descended on the Strip after authorities received reports of an active shooter near the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Las Vegas police later said one suspect was “down” but did not give any other details.

Concert-goers reported seeing muzzle flashes from the upper floors of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across Las Vegas Boulevard from the country music festival and the sound of what they described as automatic gun fire.

Twenty-six people were admitted to the hospital, University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen said. Of those, at least two died, 12 were in critical condition and the rest were being evaluated, she said.

We will update as more as information develops…

UPDATE:  UK Daily Mail reporting 20+ dead, hundreds injured

At least 20 are killed and more than 100 injured after lone wolf gunman fires hundreds of rounds on country music festival from 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay resort before being killed by SWAT

At least 20 people have been killed, including at least two police officers, and more than 100 injured after at least one gunman unloaded hundreds of rounds of ammo on a Las Vegas country music festival on Sunday night. There were 30,000 people in attendance at the event.

The Strip has been completely shut down after the sniper opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest country music festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay resort and casino, located across a junction from the event.

Police confirmed that one suspect had been killed, and said at 12:38am that they believed there were no more shooters. Reports of shootings at other locations were unfounded, police said.

The shooter was killed after cops breached a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay with explosives.

Police are now looking for a woman named Marilou Danley, whom they believe may have information that could help their investigation.

    • Either belt fed or possible an AK with a big drum magazine. That’s way more than 30 rounds per burst. And most of the really high capacity after market AR magazines generally aren’t very reliable.

Grin way to look at it, but given what we know and what we can hear in the audio it does sound like something full auto with a very high capacity.

      • 30 rounds per burst? High Cap AR Mags not reliable? Not sure where you get your facts, but they are extremely inaccurate.

        • Beta C and clone 100 round mags are junk. 40 and 60 round Surefires are so-so. The 90 round drums are eh. So it is correct that most AR Hi caps are not reliable.

And those were long, sustained bursts.

    • 60 year old plus leftists decides to ruin things for others…

This sub human should not exist, nor should his actions limit our lives.

Get ready for us to protect our rights like NEVER before.

      • White, 64 years old, owns machine guns, and knows how to use them.

SORRY, BUT THIS DOESNT SOUND LIKE A LEFTIST, IT SOUNDS MUCH MORE LIKE A RIGHT WING NUT, TRYING TO BLAME ” LEFTIST” IS THE KIND OF IGNORANCE THAT LED THIS OBVIOUS GUN LOVING RIGHT WING ZEALOT TO DO THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS GUY HAD FREAKING FULL AUTOS, AND DO YOU KNOW WHY ? BECAUSE IN AMERICA ANYONE WITH A CLEAN RECORD AND THE MONEY CAN BUY A FULL AUTO. ITS ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN THAT THIS KIND OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU LIVE IN A PLACE THAT SELLS THE WEAPONS THQT MAKE THIS POSSIBLE.

      • Legal full auto guns cost $20,000+. Illegally buying one in Mexico and taking it across the border costs about ~$1000. Illegally making one from scratch in your garage ~$100. But your capital letters are quite convincing. Thank you for sharing that useful information (sarc).

  1. Got the news on another tab. Medical. That’s what you got at this point if you get caught in such a place/situation..

Not that most of those OFWG’s care. They got their gun and that’s all they need. And no, don’t bitch, we’ve seen EXACTLY those “I don’t need medical I gots my gat” comments here before. We’ve seen ’em by the truck ton.

  2. Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. I just hope the government doesn’t use yet another tragedy to call for more gun control. All of the last s in the book now hasn’t stopped any of these from happening. I’m glad to hear that law enforcement was able to take the perpetrator out. This is a crying shame.

    • THIS YET AGAIN UNDERLINES THE REALITY THAT OUR LIFE IS SUBJECT TO CEASING IN AN INSTANT AND THE ETERNAL DOMICILE OF OUR SOUL IN EITHER HEAVEN OR HELL SOLELY DEPENDS ON OUR PREVIOUSLY ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR CREATOR, OUR TRIUNE GOD; ONLY OUR FREE WILL INDIVIDUAL RELATIONSHIP THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE SOLELY DETERMINING FACTOR. IN AN INSTANT OUR LIFE CAN BE SNUFFED OUT AND THE STATUS OF OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS FROZEN FOREVER.

    • HRC already did it. as if a silencer would have changed a thing.. he’s got access to full auto, he can get a CAN..

Also, elevated position, everyone hit the deck. He already the best possible situation to achieve his goals. 🙁

      • If he was using a suppressor, then he would have melted his can at the rate of fire he was exercising. If you look at the videos, people only started to react after about ~150 rounds were fired. Suppressor would have malfunctioned by then and would have been a non-factor.

      • No, just to see how deep will the gun owners be f**cked again… Unfortunately, the less sh!tty scenario will not materialize, the guy reported as Stephen Paddock. So the gun grabbers are now jumping with joy and dancing rave I guess.

I would not agree with the shooter in any case.

I would not agree with the shooter in any case.

      • The identity and the motives will show how much will the law abiging gun owners disparaged again. Alas, this is one Stephen Paddock, so I guess gun grabbers are now jumping with joy.

I would not agree with the shooter in any case. Let him be hanged, drawn and quartered, even though he is dead.

        • Seems like my posts went through but did not appear. Sorry for the repetition and slight changes 🙂 I was trying to get something through,

  3. Are there any words suitable to describe this sort of degeneracy? How broken is a culture that spawns psychopaths like this? It’s just god damned appalling.

  4. Hearts and prayers to the people who are suffering from this act of terrorism.

Let the bloody shirt waving begin.

I’m sure the concert was a gun free zone, not like it would have mattered. I can’t think of too many people who would have brought a scoped rifle to a country music concert in downtown Las Vegas. I can think of a few people here who would have (myself included), but don’t go to music concerts (again myself included) specifically because they can’t bring a rifle. Although I’m sure there were plenty of cops working overtime who didn’t think to bring their rifles to an overtime gig.

The badguy fired at least five uninterrupted full-cyclic strings of fire from what sounded like 50-100 round drum mags from what (I’m guessing) sounded like a (rate reduced) AKM (again…. just guessing here). How much return fire did the cops (or anyone for that matter) deliver? 32nd story not withstanding, that volume of fire would have been pretty easy to pinpoint, but (like the Florida night club thing, Columbine, London, Dallas, Mumbai, etc) everybody had to wait for the SWAT team to take this guy out…… gonna be interesting to see what shakes out, politically and from the police response, in the next few days.

  5. What are the words sufficient for this sort of degeneracy? How broken is a culture that spawns psychopaths such as this? It’s just god damned appalling.

    • Seems your moral compass is broken at the moment. Perhaps you could explain the difference between clips and magazines to the victims.

      • And perhaps you can explain to millions of innocent americans why a news commentator is slandering their character again on national TV demonizing lawful firearm ownership because of the actions on a single insane person who decided to murder people.

      • My moral compass remains is firmly fixed upon the existence of good and evil and the U.S. Constitution in the only country in the world that gives us the freedom to fight evil.

Pray for the living, mourn for the dead.

        Fear for your freedom.

  6. Yay let’s play “irresponsible speculation!”
    The “asian” woman, marylou whatever, is of phillipino or malaysian decent. The only clues to the motivations are;

1targeted country music concert, 2companion from or has ties to country with islamic insurgency
3shooter had a fully automatic weapon, illegal for average citizens

I suppose there is a chance it was a mormon with an nfa license and a pre ban model but I’m leaning more toward the Amish again… you know, triggered by those hardcore Jason Aldeon lyrics…

BTW, isn’t it interesting that Michael Bennet’s ridiculous “police brutality” hoax just fell apart and then this happens in the same city?

    • Fully automatic weapons are not “illegal for average citizens,” they are just expensive and difficult to obtain. Hell, although heavily regulated, there even legal full auto firearms in California.

  7. What are the words sufficient for this sort of degeneracy? How broken is a culture that spawns psychopaths such as this? It’s just god damned appalling.

    • Ok give me one culture that hasn’t. It’s human nature. There are ALWAYS going to be people like this, there always has in the past.

  8. Reports of “full auto” fire. Cant wait to see how long that “fact” holds up. The speculation from the media is just so predictable.

  9. News reports of “full auto” fire. Cant wait to see how lomg that one holds up. The specylation from thr media is so predictable at this point.

    • Watch/listen to the videos coming out of the event. It was full-auto (for once). I’m not suggesting the MSM would know the difference, but broken clocks and all.

    • The rate of fire seems too slow for full-automatic. I am also thinking slide-fire stock.

How long before the ATF decides to finally ban them?

    • BINGO…we have a winner. I really think that’s what it will turn out to be (that’s what I thought the first time I heard the video)…the cadence of the shots seems eratic….like a “Bump Fire” or a Binary Trigger!!

  10. The attack has to be premeditated in some fashion because one does not simply find a rifle ammo up on the 32nd floor of a Vegas hotel nor would they simply be on hand if the shooter got angry about a loud concert. However, eyeballing the distance from the shooter to the concert site, that looks like 300+ yards away. The shots sound too fast for aimed fire and the distance was too great to pick out individual targets without a scope and time to aim, so it would appear that the attacker simply fired into the crowd. Unaimed fire at 300 yards means the shooter didn’t care about any particular target, they were relying on the fact that the crowd was packed together.

The question is thus: why would the attacker make such a plan? Country music isn’t particularly controversial, at least in the US.

The entire situation sounds completely unhinged. It is, of course, but there is usually some element connecting the parts together which so far remains absent.

Also, that doesn’t sound like actual full auto fire. Maybe a bump stock or one of those wind-up gizmos.

  11. Death toll now at least 50 with 200+injured. Unconfirmed reports that it was a single shooter, older white male, who was killed by police.

  12. 50 dead. Damn it. Sick, sick person. Children in the crowd. RIP to the victims. Unfortunately, now we’ll have to fight to keep our God given, unalienable, Constitutional rights……..yet again.

  13. Listen to the audio.
-It sounds like a “Gatling” style crank trigger. The tempo of fire is fast, but not constant in speed – the ROF seems to vary.
-Continuous string of fire of over 40 rounds from what I could tell. That means belt fed, or more likely drum mags.

Sounds like this individual knows their way around modifying firearms… what a POS.

    • BINGO…we have a winner. I really think that’s what it will turn out to be (that’s what I thought the first time I heard the video)…the cadence of the shots seems eratic….like a “Bump Fire” or a Binary Trigger!!

  14. The ignorance is running wild across the Media this morning. Only thing we know for sure is the perp had a full-auto weapon. Standby for calls to confiscate our AR’s.

  15. Something really weird about the sound of that shot string. The cyclic seems unsteady, like it ramps up and ramps down. Are we talking about an improvised full-auto? Could this thing be hand-cranked?

    • As noted by a few others, the cyclic rate in the videos is not consistent which leads me to believe this is either a bump/slide-stock or more likely, an Echo trigger. The longest burst I was able to catch with GoldWave was 74 rounds so it was probably coming from drum mags.

  16. SHARE Act and Reciprocity just died. “Imagine how much worse it would have been with suppressors”. We get blamed for it even though we didn’t do it. That’s the problem with a hard core anti gun GOP. If it takes many years to get pro gun legislation through there will always be a tragedy to exploit to justify not pushing it through. Steve Scalise shooting derailed it for months. This will take years. By that time the worthless GOP majority will be replaced by Dems.

  17. Think the latest total is 50 dead, 200 injured per Fox. Sad, sad, thing.

I think we all know what happens next. It will undoubtedly be an AR pattern rifle. Yet again a series of “experts” will come out of the woodwork, stand on the graves of the innocent, and push even harder for gun control. Wouldn’t be surprised if the president himself pushed for gun control in an effort to boost approval.

We’re about to see the true colors of the government officials many POTG thought were on their side.

  18. Same here, I cannot get through a reply to DangerDave October 2, 2017 at 06:08 so let’s try outside the thread: No, just to see how deep will the gun owners be f**ked again… Unfortunately, the less sh!tty scenario will not materialize, the guy reported as Stephen Paddock. So the gun grabbers are now jumping with joy and dancing rave I guess. I would not agree with the shooter in any case.

  19. There’s something weird about the sound of that shot string, like it’s speeding up and slowing down. It doesn’t sound like a conventional full-auto weapon. It sounds almost like it’s hand-cranked.

  20. Listen to the audio.

The rate of fire is high, but not consistent. It sounds like its varying. IMO it sounds like a “gatling crank” trigger.

Also I counted at least 35+ consecutive rounds in the initial volley.. likely closer to 50. That means belt or (more likely) drum mags.

That means this sick POS has some knowledge of firearms, and has been tailoring a rifle (or rifles) for this specific use.

  21. Fifty-plus dead, more expected, 200 plus injured. I have no words to express the sorrow felt for those people and their families.

Audio I’ve heard sounded like AK fire, but don’t quote me on that. Full auto, so the press did get that one ‘right’ for a change. Mag changes were poo-pooed by ABC’s Feebie collaborator, claiming only weapon changes could be that fast.

ABC anchors already announcing ‘changes in gun control laws will pass rapidly now.’

Cue the remainder of the gun control advocates…

Shades of Enemies Foreign and Domestic.

    • I wonder if it was an actual Gatling gun. We know that the attacker shot at least 250 rounds and likely double that with misses. I cannot imagine a run-of-the-mill rifle spewing out 500 rounds over the course of two minutes without the barrel melting down at some point. An actual Gatling gun would eliminate the problem of a single overheated barrel. And if it was in a large caliber (.35 or greater), that would explain the mortality rate. (I openly admit that I am not a Gatling gun expert and I have no idea what calibers were common.)

      • An actual Gatling Gun is unlikely due to its massive size and weight, and the fact that you would’ve seen a lot more fatalities due to the fact they were chambered in 45-70 Government.
The 45-70, even though it dates back to 1873 is a very potent round, suitable for ELEPHANT hunting, that can penetrate barriers even from long range. Even though it’s not flat shooting, it’s accurate to 1,000 yards and can kill at 3,500 yards! The Buffalo Arms company sells a replica 1877 Gatling Gun (currently “out of stock”, but it used to sell for $50,000) at this link: https://www.buffaloarms.com/colt-classic-remake-1877-gatling-gun-10-barrel-45-70-model-colt1877hscm.
Here’s a description of how powerful the 45-70 round can be, from Army testing in 1879: “While the effective range of the .45-70 on individual targets was limited to about 1,000 yards (915 m) with either load, the heavier bullet would produce lethal injuries at 3,500 yards (3,200 m). At those ranges, the bullets struck point-first at a roughly 30 degree angle, penetrating three 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick oak boards, and then traveling to a depth of 8 inches (20 cm) into the sand of the Sandy Hook beach.”
That’s why I say that if the weapon used in Las Vegas were a Gatling gun, you’d have seen even more fatalities and fewer wounded.
It did sound like a machine gun to me, fully-automatic. Since actual machine guns (like the M240 or M60) are so difficult for a civilian to get, more likely it was an AR or AK converted to fully-automatic, or an AR or AK with a bump-fire stock. There are drum magazines and also box magazines holding 50 rounds or more. Our LGS used to sell a 30-caliber belt-fed machine gun, converted to semiautomatic, so that’s also a possibility, a legally-purchased belt-fed semi-automatic weapon converted BACK to fully-automatic.

The reason I’m trying to stay technical is that staying technical keeps my mind of the sorrow of this horrific, ghastly event. I will say that whatever the motivation, shooting at a crowd of 20,000 concert-goers is an act of terrorism. It doesn’t matter what the shooter’s race, religion, age, ethnicity, or politics were, it’s still an act of terrorism. This wasn’t some guy who got fed up by the noise of the concert and suddenly snapped, it was pre-planned, pre-meditated, and carefully prepared!

        • Derringer Dave,

One news source said that the distance from the attacker’s window to the crowd was 400 yards. At that range both 5.56 x45 mm and 7.62 x 39 mm have handgun energies — which probably corresponds pretty well with the 11% mortality rate (about 50 killed among 450 total injured/killed), especially given the fact that all the bullets were on a severe downward trajectory (due to the attacker’s elevation) and would have probably caused a lot of head shots.

When I first heard that only 200 were wounded and did not realize that the attacker was over 300 feet above the victims, I figured a 20% mortality rate was more in line with a large caliber. Now I am thinking that you are right: probably an AR or AK with a bump stock.

      • An actual Gatling gun (hand crank) would be far too large to get into a hotel room without someone noticing. And ROF is far too slow for a modern Gatling, which would also be extremely hard to get into a hotel room.
An actual full-auto weapon would be extremely expensive.
My money is on a bump-fire AR or AK, with drum mags.
In any event, we will know soon, probably before the end of today.

        • Not an actual gatling gun – one of those little Gatling crank “full auto” conversions you see at gun shows for AR’s and AKs.

      • I doubt it was an actual Gatling gun, even though they are legal to purchase, because it would be too large and heavy to transport to a hotel room, plus they’re in caliber 45-70 Government which would have caused a lot more fatalities, close to 100% fatalities rather than 10% as it appears.
The Buffalo Arms Company sells a replica 1877 Gatling Gun here (currently “out of stock”, but they used to sell them for $50,000). The 45-70 Government round is so powerful that it was used for ELEPHANT hunting, is accurate to 1,000 yards, and lethal to 3,500 yards, as described in its Wikipedia entry below:
“While the effective range of the .45-70 on individual targets was limited to about 1,000 yards (915 m) with either load, the heavier bullet would produce lethal injuries at 3,500 yards (3,200 m). 24. If the killer did this in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, etc., the U.S. “government” would be pinning a medal on him. This is a case of “what goes around, comes around” karma. The U.S. “government” needs to stop doing to people all over the world what this deranged manic did here and instead start leading the world by good example.

  25. Conspiracy theory: What if the alleged shooter was “disappeared” either at ot before the hotel, and this shooting was done by “the shadow gvmnt”. How do we know the Sandy Hook shooter Lanza actually did the shooting. Same reasoning.
How does one get 10 guns into a hotel. Wouldn’t one or two have sufficed?

      • I see smart ass. You heard the lying TV box and so you KNOW. Of course, they always tell the truth, and there’s no motivation for the communist government to take your gun. Which you’re probably scared of anyway.
Show me the proof that everything you heard and now KNOW is TRUE.
        Until then, don’t ASS-ume snowflake.

        • I hear you, Bob, and it certainly is our right to speculate. We have been lied to so much. So THANK YOU for questioning the (controlled) narrative on t.v.

  26. There simply is no reason why anyone should be allowed to own a full auto weapon.
I have been a pro gun rights guy my whole life, I know, like you, that a AR or AK is no worse than a any other rifle, and only looks scary. But a machine gun is a whole different animal. The danger of having them available to people with the money is just far to high. Nobody’s gun rights have more importance or weight than preventing this kind of tragedy. We should not be able to own a Full Auto period.

    • Truth Teller- I respectfully disagree. The impetus for the 2A isn’t for hunting and shooting paper targets. It’s sole purpose is for killing people. People who would do harm to ourselves and our loved ones. But more importantly, the 2A is to protect our country, from enemies foreign and domestic. That means the possibility of fighting an invading force or our own tyrannical govt. both of those unlikely scenarios would necessarily require select fire weapons.

    • Ah, so you support the Second Amendment, BUT!

Can you liberal $#!+stains wait for the blood to be mopped up before you start blaming the non-participants?

BTW, when are you going to apologize for the Civil War you started, the Klan and the racism of the 50s, all managed by Dems? Or are you going to repeat that lie about “switching sides”?

And anyone with “enough money” can buy full auto…if by “enough money” you mean several to tens of thousands.

Or possibly he made an illegal conversion. Which can be done with instructions of your precious liberal internet.

  27. Is anyone on this website seriously considering turning over their AR’s? I wouldn’t do it at this point regardless of what egregious act someone committed.

  28. I’m thinking bump stock or binary trigger. I always thought those were dubious. Anyway no guns are bring turned over by me regardless of how this shakes out. Democrats and certain Republicans can kiss my ass.

  29. I listened to several videos and it sounded like it sputtered like a bumpfire stock If so the left will try for a ban.

  30. It could be that the ramping effect you hear is echo. Gunfire as most of us know, sounds differently in an urban concrete and steel atmosphere.

I would ask as our President did, for us to use this as an opportunity to come together, and turn towards God. If you are not a believer, please turn towards our shared citizenship and Constitution.

Just because someone is not a believer, doesn’t mean they are evil or do not care about society, family, friends and community. The one thing this horrible act shows us is that evil is real in the world. People say believers Judge others while exempting their own minds and souls from moral/ethical failure.

My Faith states that everyone has moral and ethical failures. And when a person with those moral and ethical failures encounters, is given, takes, vast power and influence, these moral/ethical failures are usually magnified exponentially.

The Founding Fathers, who were very flawed people, both understood this fact about the human soul, and distrusted each other because of it. This is borne out in the original Constitution.

It allowed that people who were in bondage be counted as part of a person, and not counted as a full citizen with full rights. It also did not list women, (yes, back then they believed in the obvious differences between men and women existed) should be considered as full citizens.

In this document, the Founders showed their weakness because of the want to keep wealth and power by exploiting others. But by Providence, and a unique understanding of their own flaws, they wrote the Bill of Rights, including citizens Right to Bear Arms, along with the, (although very difficult), ability to amend the document/agreement.

Their are so many checks and balances written into the Constitution that the distrust and understanding of our shared moral/ethical failure is obvious. This is a characteristic of what was called Western Values. Although some disagree, I believe this attitude evolved, way of life, came from the Jews, then Jewish Christians, Middle East, Turkish area, Greeks, Romans, and then all over the Western World. It comes from the idea that our rights come from a Creator, and are not subject to the winds of power, corruption, and public opinion.

It details a journey of justification with our Creator from groups of people, to an individual person/soul. We have been baited, and then pulled apart by forces trying to group our Citizens by race, gender and ethnic background.

We are individuals, with individual rights mandated by our Creator. I may have a certain race, ethnicity, or gender. That grouping may be interesting historically, or for maybe a predisposition to certain illnesses. I found out I have a great deal of Scandinavian genes. However, I do not identify with historical Vikings. I am an individual American Citizen, who I believe, was created in the image of my Creator, with unique DNA, and soul. My life is of value, just for that reason alone.

If we follow our Constitution, we can all agree to disagree, but in a civil way under the law. And understand that because we are all morally/ethically fallen, we need a standard above ourselves that cannot be crossed. If you put your faith in a human being, you will always be disappointed.

In my Faith, I (TRY) to do the right thing because of love for what I believe our Creator did for me, not for fear of judgement, or anger about my belief in the unfairness of life. First thing on path to God, we are all morally/ethically flawed, and our life on earth is not fair.

And for all who don’t believe in anything except might means right, you ought to be happy that the folks that hold onto our God and our Guns, put our God first on that list, and the fact that order will never change.

    May God Bless our Nation
