[Hit refresh for updates.] According to Tehema County California Undersheriff Phil Johnston, a shooter has killed at least five people and wounding two students. “The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting happened at an elementary school in Rancho Tehama around 8:00 am. local time,”” wcvb.com reports. A reporter Tweeted an interview with local police revealing . . .
that they terminated the shooter with extreme prejudice. Some 100 law enforcement officers from various agencies are investigating seven crime scenes. The AP [via krctv.com] offers this description of one of the crime scenes.
Coy Ferreira, whose daughter is a kindergarten student, was dropping his daughter off for class just before 8 a.m. when he heard what sounded like a firecracker. A school secretary ran out and yelled for the kids to get in the classrooms because someone was shooting at the school.
Ferreira said he ran into a classroom with 14 students. He said the series of shots came through the classroom windows, hitting one student. Ferreria said a young boy was shot in the foot and the chest. When he spoke to us, he said the child was alert and talking. He said another student in an adjacent classroom was shot under the arm. That child was also conscious.
Ferreira said there were two gunmen. [ED: unconfirmed and unlikely] He saw one of them, a man in his 30’s-40’s dressed in green camo running away from the school after the shooting . . .
A witness named Tiffany, who operates Coffee Addiction Coffee Shop near the school, told KRCR News Channel 7 she heard 90-100 shots fired.
…after hearing 10 or more gun shots, would someone really know they heard 90 to 100 actual shots?

Good thing California is A-rated on guns by Bloomberg and Everytown.
And don’t forget, all schools are gun free zones.
Though several students were shot, it doesn’t look like anyone was killed at the school.

It’s hard to keep track of CA gun laws, but I recall Sacramento recently passing a Statewide measure prohibiting teachers from having firearms on school grounds.
There has always been a CA loophole where if you somehow got a carry permit you could carry in public schools but Moonbeam took care of that one for teachers to never be armed.
As soon as I read the headline, that was the first thing to come to mind. Whether the school was the intended target or just part of a larger spree, these kids were just left to be sitting ducks.
Yes, but it doesn’t go into effect until January 1, but even under current law, carrying requires permission of the school district superintendent.
I’ve been meaning to look into this but perhaps you could save me the trouble; does the new law apply to private schools as well?
If only CA had universal background checks and a 10 round magazine limit this never would of happened.

Rancho Tehama is a very strange community to begin with. It is a rural area west of Red Bluff by a good number of miles, and therefore far from typical police resources. Homes are mostly single and double wide mobiles on “ranchettes”, and there have been any number of drug related crimes, pot growing, meth, loose pit bulls attacking kids, and a lot of people who don’t want anyone in their “business.” Sounds like one of them went off his rocker.

I hate this situation as once again innocent people have had their rights violated by the hands of some gun-rights psycho who’s right to kill is greater than the constitution right to not live in fear or be killed.
This does not happen in Europe, Australia, Canada or Japan on a daily basis.

The laws in California work, It’s guns from neighbor states with lax laws that get into this states. California has the 7th best economy in the US. While alaska, a pro-gun state has the worst economy, higher percentage of murders, highest amount of serial killers and violent crime.
