Cinco de Mayo parade shooting crime scene, Detroit (courtesy wxyz.com)

“A shooting at the Cinco de Mayo parade in southwest Detroit has police immediately canceling the parade,’ wxyz.com reports. “7 Action News has learned one person has died in the shooting. The victim is believed to be between the ages of 16 and 19 years old.” A child! “The shooting happened right in the middle of the intersection at Vernor Highway and Ferdinand. Police have one person in custody and are on scene investigating the shooting. They believe there is a gang connection in the shooting.” Which once again proves that Detroit has a gun problem. Sorry, channeled my inner Shannon there. I mean, gang problem. Not that the victim’s aunt -who saw the shooting – sees it that way, exactly . . .

“That’s why I try to tell these kids to stop this. It’s getting out of control … these kids are dying and my nephew wasn’t even in a gang. All this stuff is over gangs and he just hangs out with gang members.”

Belda Garza, a co-president of the Mexican Patriotic Committee that planned the event, expressed condolences to all concerned to mlive.com. “We are devastated about it and the committee our condolences go out to the family of the young man who we believe has died, even the shooter. When something like this happens it’s a tragedy for both people involved and for our community.”

Even the shooter? Where’s the sense of properly focused anger and outrage when you need it? [h/t DrVino]

    • When I was over in Detroit last summer they were “celebrating” 48 hours without a shooting.

  1. “my nephew wasn’t even in a gang. All this stuff is over gangs and he just hangs out with gang members”

    Wait, wut?

  2. Why not a law against dope dealing murderous gang members possessing firearms? Or hell, a law against murder?

    • Well, she hasn’t been in the hot zones in Chicago, and I think that might be a hair closer to her neck of the woods than Motown.

    • I doubt MikeBbillionaire pays well enough to justify trips to the south side. Say, that reminds me….

  3. Perhaps Auntie does not understand that “hanging out with gang members is the same as being in the gang”.

  4. Yes, even the shooter; it’s probable than had he not been “raised” by sh¡ts, in a sh¡thole, that things would be different.

Yeah, he’s the useless turd of a shooter, but he’s only mostly (ir)responsible rather than totally.

That said, hanging with gangsters shoud qualify one for a Darwin when lo que debe suceder sucederá.

  5. Does the aunt know his age or is just 16-19? Give condolences to the shooter he didn’t know either.
This has to be one of the rare times that the police arrested the suspect.

  6. I’m not a drug dealer, I just hang out with them. I’m not in the mob, I just hang out with them. I’m not an active member of the Klan, I just hang out with them. I’m not a jihadist, I just hang out with them. Derp.

  7. “Condolences to … even the shooter.” Yeah, poor little innocent shooter was victimized by the big bad scary gun that sucked his hand around its grip, pointed itself, and pulled its own trigger.

‘scuse me. I just threw up in my mouth a little.

    • And that is EXACTLY how the local media will present it. “We look back on the tragic shooting of an innocent bystander at yesterday’s cancelled cinco de Mayo parade. The young man perished as a gun that was innocently held by a rival club member mysteriously discharged sending a bullet of armor piercer ripping through the youth. The young man holding the evil spitfire was arrested as police investigate We at WBS TV would like to take this moment to remind all of our viewers that once again we can see the Evil perpetrated on this local community by the monsters that make and distribute these machines of mayhem…..closing from the scene this is BS Gabber for WBS TV.”

      note*-above=sarc.

      • Shouldn’t that be more like “the guilty firearm and the child it came with were arrested”?

    • I ALWAYS hate when my guns do that. Really, though, old and shaky these days, but I can use that as an excuse if I miss by too far.

      • Truthfully, there probably wasn’t a Cinco de Mayo parade in Guadalajara. It’s not nearly as big a deal in Mexico as it is among the “diversity community” here in the US and their token Hispanics. September 16 is a bigger holiday, being more appropriately regarded as Mexico’s version of Independence Day. Where I live, C de M is basically a fundraising activity where the local businesses can show how culturally sensitive they are by throwing money at “the community”.

    • There have been….it was about a decade back, though it was actually in late June, for the International Freedom Festival celebration.

    • …and I’m just going to say that T-shirts with the Stars-and-Stripes are forbidden during the parade because the Quatro de Julio has a special meaning to the community. Antagonism them would be inappropriate trouble-making.

  8. Ralph, you have to wait for the 14th of July to get some shooting action in Mexico.

Wait, that was 2 Mules for Sister Sara…

  9. Wow, sanctimonious much? I hung out with gang members growing up in the 80’s and 90’s when my friends joined a gang, doesn’t mean I was part of it, and they had been my friends for years before that… I ended up not being a criminal and going to med school. Don’t blame the victim without more info… It’s possible he could have just been a victim… And since we don’t allow kids to own guns, even if they are more responsible than some adults we know, he may have been a victim in more ways than one.

  10. Robert: You better stop that channeling of that inner Shannon. She might like it in there and stay for awhile! Remember….Sybil?

Idiot aunt?! He just hangs out with gang members, but he is not a member of a gang! Big deal, the other gangs just don’t understand that technicality, not would they care, would they?

  11. Before everyone lets their conclusions get out of control, according to the Detroit news….

1.. police do NOT suspect gang involvement.

    2…the weapon WAS licensed.

    • The Liberal press reports that the gun is licensed and that the shooting wasn’t gang related. That was really fast police work.

Hmmm: so now they can add this shooting to the list of those maniac licensed concealed carry killers. Isn’t that convenient.

  12. The most difficult thing about being poor, or being middle class but in a dysfunctional (ill or addicted) family in an iffy neighborhood, isn’t the ‘poor’ part, it’s the getting dragged down by people with nothing better to do, no goals, or lacking the ability to pursue goals. It’s the cross-fire. It’s the being harassed by often surprising “guilt by association” with someone who’s ill deeds you weren’t even aware of. It’s the frustration level that comes with the territory. People who break through that and succeed always always have some adult, a teacher, a grandmother, a neighbor, someone who helped that happen. Always.

  13. “That’s why I try to tell these kids to stop this. It’s getting out of control … these kids are dying and my nephew wasn’t even in a gang. All this stuff is over gangs and he just hangs out with gang members.”
Avoid doing stupid things in stupid places with stupid people.

Even if the kid was not a gang banger, he violated the rule above.

  14. Keep Your Negative Comments To Yourselfs!. This Is Not A Joke. A Mother Lost A Son And A Son Lost A Father,No This Is Not Have Anything To Do With Gangs. Asap Is Not A Gang, It’s A Movement. Always Strive And Prosper. Rest In Paradise Noodles You Will Be Missed !! I Love You Big Cuzz
