Carolyn McCarthy has been one of the most outspoken advocates for gun control in the United States. Elected after her husband was shot and killed on the Long Island Railroad, she championed the original Assault Weapons Ban along with Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and just about every measure that would restrict the ability for Americans to exercise their right to keep and bear arms. News comes today that she will not be seeking re-election, instead retiring at the end of this term. I for one am sad, since we’ll have to find a new poster child for politicians attempting to regulate something which they have literally no idea how it works or what it does. But I’m sure one will be forthcoming. From the AP report:

Senior Democratic aides say two House Democrats — Carolyn McCarthy of New York and Mike McIntyre of North Carolina — plan to retire.

McCarthy, who has served nine terms, was elected shortly after her husband was killed in a shooting on the Long Island Railroad. She has been a forceful advocate for gun control.

McIntrye is one of the few remaining Southern Democrats in the House and also has served for nine terms. He survived the Republican sweep in 2010 and redrawn congressional lines in 2012. His retirement gives the Republicans a strong chance of winning the seat.

The aides spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss the decisions ahead of formal announcements.

So, good news for Republicans all around then.

    • The current scuttlebutt going around is that she IS leaving. The current CA AG is expected to replace her in 2018. I read that in a liberal publication several days ago too; can’t remember which one though but i wanna say it was the Daily Beast and the article was about something completely irrelevant too. I think it was about Governor Moonbeam or something. Unfortunately that current AG is trying to get the courts to uphold gun control on the absolutely ridiculous argument that since the 2A was, in her world, ratified due to racism, the courts have to uphold gun control. Yes really.

    • That creature is this generations Strom Thurmond. She’s is literally the old person in congress. 59 years in office with 21 of them being in the Senate.

I can’t think of any better example why we desperately need term limits.

      • U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton, 514 U.S. 779 (1995) — states cannot require term limits for federal offices. it would require a Constitutional amendment.

    • Indeed. I for one will not miss their bony fingers twitching in anticipation to sign bills that will infringe upon my freedom.

    • Not quite. “A” grade from NRA. Pro gun. Also one of the three Democrats that voted against Obamacare. Those old Conservative Democrats in the South were more conservative than northern Republicans.

  1. In January 2012, McCarthy along with Senator Dianne Feinstein from California proposed a bill which would “ban the sale, transfer, manufacturing of importation of 150 specific firearms including semiautomatic rifles or pistols that can be used with a detachable or fixed ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and have specific military-style features, including pistol grips, grenade launchers or rocket launchers.” McCarthy spoke on the bill saying, “The American people are on our side this time, and we do outnumber some of the people who are fighting against us this time”

Dianne Feinstein will be 81 in June hopefully we don’t have to wait much longer and this madness can finally end..

  2. With the omens being all bad the die hard civil rights violators are all leaving the sinking ships. They behaved as rats to the very end.

  3. I sympathize with her.Her husband was murdered by someone with a gun.

What is equally sad is that in all the terms she served she did nothing that could prevent another person with a gun from being able to shoot someone elses loved one.

Lets face it there is only one way to prevent one person from shooting another-remove all guns. That ofcourse will stop gun murders. Murders by other means will continue.

I don’t want to have to face an attacker without a gun.

    • “Her husband was murdered by someone with a gun.”
What’s the gun have to do with it? Her blaming her husband’s death on the gun is idiotic. Frankly, she’d be better off blaming herself and him for not carrying one. At least that way he might have stood a chance.

    • Remove all guns? How, exactly? Even if by some miracle all guns vanished overnight I can build a gun in 30 minutes out of some plumbing supplies for about $20 from local Home Depot. Including shopping time. Not very pretty or very safe but functional.

  4. So we won’t have Carolyn to kick around and make fun of anymore. I can live with that.

I heard another sitting Dem has decided not to return. Total Dems retiring: 3. BUT, there are four Repubs also retiring and several of their seats could be won by Dems. Looks mostly like a flat swap, so far.

God, but I hate cheering for Republicans, with whom I agree on very little when it comes to social policy issues, but I’ve become a single issue voter, much to my amazement. I’m voting in 2014 for anyone who protects or advances gun rights, and I will have to deal with their votes on other issues.

  5. Thanks for minor miracles.
I have hardly talked to my sister in law since she had a fund raiser.
Held at my brothers house on LI for that biatch during her 1st campaign.
Unfortunately for me, her retirement wont change any thing there.
    Oooh well.

  6. heard this on the news tonight. saw her face and immediately went “CAROLY MCCARTHY OF NEW YORK SHOULDER THING THAT GOES UP”

everyone was like “who?” i showed them the video..many lulz.

  7. She doesn’t want to regulate guns, she wants to restrict them.

As for her decision, may the retirement village of her choice enjoy its new idiot. Also, good riddance to bad rubbish. Although I’m sure the Democratic Party already has a successor to her ignoble crown waiting in the wings…

  8. It would have been far better, on the Schadenfreude Scale(tm) to have her defeated in an election. But I’ll take what I can get, and revel in the fact that she was almost utterly ineffective in her job.

  9. I’m sure none of us are sad to see her go, but whoever replaces her won’t be any better. Her district went to Obama in the last two elections and to Kerry, Gore and Clinton (twice) before that.

  10. I suggest Colorado Rep Diana Degette replace her. She seems to think once you shoot the bullets out of a high capacity magazine, that magazine is no longer usefull:

    • This comes from watching too much tv…

Think about it, every action movie or cop show, the good guy drops the empty mag on the ground, pulls a fresh one out of thin air, then inserts it and moves on.

You never see them goong around after the fight gathering up empty mags, or jamming mags before the fight.

In movies, video games, and cops shows mags are disposable, plentiful, and solidify out of thin air.

And, don’t get me started on the “click, click” noise every time someone points a gun with intent… Where the hell is that noise coming from?!?!

      • When the Czechs or Hungerians tried to rebel against their commie masters I remember a story told by a survivor of the fighting that escaped to the west. This was the 50s or 60s. He was a civilian that joined the freedom fighters. Most were just average folk that tried to gain freedom.

Having no arms his bunch raided a police armory. He aquired a semi auto pistol as a result. He had no experience of guns and no training. Movies were his only reference. In the movies he’d seen at that time every time someone was going to fire a semi they racked the slide. So that’s what he did. Every shot he took before he fired again he manually racked the slide.

OJT during a rebellion is a tough thing. Fortunately he lived thru it and escaped to freedom.

        • This is why a well regulated (well trained) militia is necessary, but just an armed one will do…

        • It was most likely Hungarians. There was some real fighting there. In ’68 in Czechoslovakia – not really. Oh, there was a lot of protesting and petitioning and flags waving but no armed resistance. Good part of Warsaw pact flew in overnight and took all important positions with tanks to crush the contra-revolution before poeple got up in the morning. I heard they waited for some help from the West, but who would burn his fingers over some 15 million guys left behind a line on a map drawn in Yalta, right?

  11. We as ‘free, liberty minded’ Americans , could use about 60 more senators to retire…NOW…..and take the commies out of the house when you leave….Semper Fi

  12. that shoulder thing is called an arm and at the end of it is a hand and in the middle of the hand is a finger…which you truly deserve……..may you rot in your retirement…imho

  13. To anyone who hasn’t figured this out yet, these people know about as much about everything else (like economics, health care, the environment, etc.) as they do about firearms. Somehow we became a country where the stupidest people make all the most important decisions, and then we implore them to “do more”.

  14. Meanwhile, according to wikipedia, McCarthy is “suing more than 70 companies of potentially causing the Long Island congresswoman to develop lung cancer from asbestos. In her lawsuit, she failed to mention that she is an avid smoker for 40 years.”

You can’t make this sh1t up.

  15. We need to get all of these gun-control advocates that don’t understand one lick about guns give on conference on how and why these guns are dangerous. It would be the mother of all drinking games every time they mislabel a part of a gun or fail to understand what it does. Finish the bottle every time they say ‘clip’ instead of ‘magazine’.
