At roughly 7:20 AM local time, an explosion rocked the subway tunnel passage underneath 42nd Street and 8th Ave. According to police, a 27-year-old male named Akayed Ullah exploded an improvised device attached to his chest which injured himself and three others but did not cause any deaths. The incident has been declared an attempted terrorist attack and is being investigated by the New York City Police Department.

While this is “The Truth About Guns” and not “The Truth About Terrorists” (coming soon), some will argue that this incident clearly indicates a need for the national concealed carry reciprocity legislation, a bill for which is currently making its way through Congress.

Karate and other martial arts might be useful for defending against common attackers, but there’s no way to stop a terrorist with a suicide bomb without a firearm without putting yourself within the blast radius of their explosive. Projecting force over distance is what guns do well. It’s possible that a good guy with a gun might make the difference in preventing or reducing the carnage in some future attack whether it’s a knife, car or possibly even a bomb, depending on circumstances.

    • Might have simply been a piss poor one. A while back some suicidal nut job decided to try to kill himself with an improvised car bomb, strapping 3 pipe bombs underneath his seat and detonating them. He survived the explosion and his car burnt up. It was on an episode of cops I believe.

      • Pipe bombs are notorious for taking out their creator whether intentional or not. Usually it’s a sloppy build where black powder or other combustible is left on the threads. Since this bomb was in play and did not go off in the terrorists lab, then it was likely a faulty detonator or more likely the switch.

Too much tv and everyone wants a deadman switch. Of course They require constant attention and one lapse prior, during or after activating the switch, or in its design (my guess and oddly the same error as a Remington 700) it goes off unintentionally.

    • who exactly is president now? for the last year?

who was it who was president in 9/11/01?

how is it people blame Obama for a depression that was already a couple months old when he took office, for a little terrorist incident a year after he left, Clinton for 9/11 almost a year after he was gone?

not that this incident is President Trump’s fault either. it’s a degradation of our culture to reflexively blame the other side no matter the facts

      • ISIS is a direct result of poor policy choices and premature troop withdrawl from Iraq. Maybe instead of using the federal government as a cudgle against his political opponents and persuing aggressive redistributionism, ol’ beebopping Barry could have spent that time and money keeping Islamic extremists on the run. Just a thought.

      • Here is where the blame lies. Today’s failed bomber is from Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in the world. In April of this year it was reported in numerous media outlets that the Saudi’s are spending $1 billion to build 560 Madrassa schools, none of which will produce doctors, engineers or computer programmers.

The purpose of Madrassa schools is to spread the Saudi’s hate filled version of Wahabbi Sunni Islam which views people that don’t adhere to their theology as heretics and apostates. As with Afghanistan and Pakistan, Bangladesh will soon be producing a generation of Jihadist terrorists who will murder Shiites, Christians and other religious groups that they feel are an abomination to Allah.

        • The definition of a LOSER. Can’t even make it as a suicide bomber.

And you have to remember the Wahabbi’s hate list:

          1. Sunnis, because they aren’t Sunni enough.
          2. Shias, because they’ve always hated the Shias.
          3. Everyone else.

      • II, apologist much? I bet you can find a million things during the past hundred years which were legitimately not the fault of the community organizer and failed lawyer in chief. OTOH, there is weaponizing the IRS and intel agencies against political opponents, Benghazi, loads of “Russian collusion”, consistently pressing policies keeping the economy in the pits for no rational reason, and more which you forgot to address.

  1. Hope he has a long slow painful recovery and spends the rest of his miserable life in supermax. Fit him with a remote control shock collar that goes around his balls and put the button in a public place like times square with a camera in his cell. Charge a buck to push it to defray the cost of housing his miserable ass and to buy new batteries as needed. He’s lost all constitutional protection by being an enemy combatant in my book.

    • The first couple iterations tend to be stupid, but after that they get really smart. In Iraq during the first couple years we saw many that thought if they shot at an Abrams with an AK47 that their gun would destroy the tank because allah was with them, they thought that they could win a stand up fire fight against US troops, and they thought that our air power wouldn’t find them. After they learned they were wrong they switched to IEDS, VBIEDS, and suicide bombs of various types.

      • Yup, within the first 30 minutes of leaving the wire when I got to Afghanistan we got hit with an IED. It was in the middle of a high traffic area, and none of the other vehicles detonated it. They rigged an IR receiver switch from a garage door safety to arm the bomb. Our IR headlights armed it when the beams hit the receiver and then it triggered when the first vehicle hit the device. We had watched multiple civilian vehicles cross over that point up until then without effect. Brilliant. I was surprised at the simplicity and intelligence.
My NCOIC, on his 5th rotation said “yeah, we’ve already killed all the stupid ones.”
        True that.

        • ” They rigged an IR receiver switch from a garage door safety to arm the bomb.”

          That’s pretty slick improvised engineering.

          Immune to broadband RF jamming.

Technology that keeps American housepets from being crushed is used to kill Americans…

        • Yup, but the smartest thing I saw was how they used a rock to overcome a mine roller on an MRAP. The mine rollers on the front of the vehicle are made of a hard rubber that pushes on the ground firmly to detonate mines in front of the vehicle. The vehicle tires are softer rubber.
In Ghazni they started placing the trigger directly behind a large round rock, half buried in the dirt. The small diameter, hard rubber wheels of the mine roller would hit the rock and bounce right over the trigger or the mine. It didn’t matter how many rollers you had, each would simply bounce right over the device.
Then the larger diameter, soft rubber tire would hit the rock and wrap around it, detonating the mine or arming the device on the other side. Boom.
A million dollar piece of machinery, engineered in the US, built and flown over at incredible expense. The best defense we could come up with.
          Defeated with a rock.
And so now I limp. But hey, had to respect them for that one.

        • It’s amazed me for years how arrogant a lot of people are when it comes to this kind of thing. Engineers always think they know everything but it’s the people who actually use the equipment who find the flaws and redesign the gear to work better or tell the engineers something that they never considered.

To me, when it comes to terrorists I’m impressed by their tenacity and intelligence but not terribly surprised by it. They’re simply doing what war fighters have done for millennia.

What does surprise me, especially given the technological prowess ISIS displayed in dissemination of propaganda, is how poorly they communicate worldwide about what works. For example, back in the 1990’s the Palestinians came up with some pretty innovative ways to increase the body counts of their operations. While some of those tactics showed up in Iraq and Afghanistan, it took a while. The insurgency effectively reinvented the wheel and then improved on it but took serious hits to get that job done. Now, if some enterprising go-getter terrorists applied that knowledge here in the US, we’d take time to adapt because we haven’t had personal experience (as a nation) with those types of attacks.

This has bothered me for a while. I figure that 1) they’re reinventing the wheel again or 2) much more ominously, they’re studying up and coming up with ways to improve those tactics. The Baticlan attack would suggest the latter while the Manchester bombing suggests the former. However, this isn’t an organized group put together by a legit intelligence service so I suspect the “growth and advancement” is extremely uneven and varies from cell to cell. Hopefully we nail the smarter and better organized guys due to their communications needs but that’s not a fight I think we’ll win forever.

When the smart dudes come out to play we’re going to have some trouble.

  2. Ahh seeing him on the floor writhing in pain and bleeding warms the cockles of my cold black heart. Now hopefully he gets to die a long slow death from a series of surgical mistakes and infections while recovering in the hospital.

  3. I don’t see how this could possibly be a terror attack according to the Democrats and the mainstream media. The perpetrator of this was not white, Republican, an NRA member, and he did not commit the crime with a scary-looking evil assault style military grade gun with an attached rocket launcher or chainsaw bayonet with a bump stock.

It looks like the person in question was a member of the religion of peace and was probably a well-adjusted and assimilated immigrant from around the world here doing a job that Americans won’t do.

No doubt this is one big misunderstanding.

    /sarc

  4. Glad he was(is) an idiot. Sadly most NewYorker’s won’t connect the dots and carry…no doubt they’d be treated worse than a Moose-lim😖

  5. Now let’s not rush to judgement and paint an entire group of people over the actions of one crazy person. Wait…what? He was is a gun owner and NRA member? TERRORIST! BAN ALL GUNS! Wait, what!? Not a gun owner or used a gun?! BAN ALL GUNS, NO RESEPROCITY!

  6. Just about the behavior we have all come to expect from the “religion of peace”… stand by for the left to blame Trump for this and start a hashtag slacktivist campaign.

      • He’s not being interrogated by anyone actually intimidating. Most of Obama’s holdovers at the FBI will be more than happy to fetch him a cup of coco and commiserate about how this is all Trump’s fault. I still think that in anti-terrorism cases, the CIA should outsource their interrogation to the GRU. They’ll get him to talk. There might not be much left afterwards, but I hardly see this as a problem.

  7. Sorta confused how a concealed carry would have stopped a spontaneous suicide bombing (attempt) so I give this article a 2/7. It’s not like the guy ran down the hallway shouting and holding a detonator above his head so…no.

    • Shoot a suicide bomber, and they become much less mobile. Forget the 21 foot rule, just make good hits. Better to kill a bomber on your terms than theirs. Less lethals don’t have the standoff distance. Pepper spray peters out at about 15 feet, and our Tasers only reach 25.

  8. It’s very entertaining when I hear how atheists say we should have no national borders, and any terrorist motivated by religion should be able to come here.
And the atheists say they use “reason”????

  9. Ah ha,,,,, even the terrorist was not killed, flat out said he is ISIS. No one killed? Now an airport La Guardia? Is setting up( or just now admiring) they have camera profiling, and observation. IT’S BIG BROTHER, the “Power That Be” are using terroristic acts for massive right to privacy. Eventually, to fight terrorism the PTB will mandate cameras in homes. Sadly the populace will give this a big thumbs up, cause their a bunch of disarmed pussies, and will gladly give up freedom for saftey
