If this had happened yesterday, we’d have thought it a tasteless April fools joke. From kcentv.com: “We have reports that there are several injuries from this shooting. There is at least one patient being transported to the hospital. We are also getting reports of victims in the Battle Simulation Center on 65th and Warehouse. The suspect is still at large. The shooter was said to be in building 33026 which is the Medical Brigade Building. Fort Hood has been put on lockdown.” You may remember from the Hassan massacre that Ft. Hood, like most military bases is a gun-free zone. Live reports at the above link. Watch this space. [h/t PhoenixNFA]

  1. and where active duty military are kept defenseless by stupid liberal feel-good policies . . . . . . .

    • Uhh, fact-check much?

Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 5210.56, signed into effect in February 1992 by Donald J. Atwood, deputy secretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush.

  2. We are DA** soldiers huddling in place like sheep waiting for the alphabet soup civvies to come save the day. Disgraceful.

  3. Maybe its me, but I think there is something seriously wrong with a lockdown order on a military base. It’s like, so the opposite of what I expect to be happening if there was a real attack. Seriously, if the military can’t have guns and repel a lone shooter, good luck with something more serious like an actual attack. We’ve gone WAY beyond civilian disarmament here.

    • Well if it was the guy mentioned it’s going to be a bit
harder to spin the “workplace violence” meme.
Maybe the brass will have to make him an honorary
      member first.

  4. One death confirmed. “Shelter in place.”

I wonder how this is gonna be spun.

A military base is the LAST place a shooter should think to try his luck. But, unfortunately…

    • How true. At lease the security force on the USS Mahan was able to eliminate the threat quickly last week at Naval Station Norfolk.

  5. I was stationed at Ft. Hood in the late 90s. It’s difficult to describe how big the post it, but it’s huge. Arms are kept under lock and key in the arms room, and take a while to access. Ammunition is stored separately, and is issued separately, and accounted for.

I’m not saying it’s right, just that it’s how things are run. Trusting thousands of Private Snuffys with live ammo in a garrison environment is going to lead to some Very Bad Things. That said, issuing every E6 and higher a sidearm would probably go over pretty danged well.

      • Then your understanding of a basic Google search is twisted. Seven seconds on Google gives the truth: ” Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 5210.56, signed into effect in February 1992 by Donald J. Atwood, deputy secretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush.”

    • That being said, during my stint in the reserves, our unit was in and out of Ft. Hood 2-3 times a year with every gun we could carry, plus remaining ammo, with no checks whatsoever.

      • What difference does rank make in determining who should and should not carry a firearm? And E7 might be a horrible shot and an E5 be the opposite.

        • It’s not so much a matter of paygrade or marksmanship as it is a matter of trust.

If you can’t trust a second-tour mid-level NCO with a weapon in the U.S., how can you trust them with troops in a combat zone?

    • That was kind of the rule when my dad was in the Army. He was an E-5 in airborne cadre at Fort Benning during WWII. He carried a loaded sidearm when on duty. They also had a big POW compound on the base housing German and Italian POWs. Good reason to have armed officers and NCOs about.

    • Although I don’t dispute the privilege of military command to curtail the issue of government weaponry to those under that command… Trusting thousands of Private Snuffys with live ammo in a garrison environment is going to lead to some Very Bad Things, sounds just like the antis (and some pseudo-2A folks) spouting off about allowing every citizen to be armed will turn everywhere into the wild, wild west. On US bases in the US, I can see all military personnel being able to carry their personal sidearm when not performing their assigned duties.

  6. So the Government has failed TWICE in the same place to keep people safe in a gun free zone? And I’m supposed to believe that gun control does anything?

  7. Or maybe allow people to carry their dang personal firearms. This should be the final dang straw to show the insanity of disarming our law abiding citizens.

  8. More “work place violence” in a safe, gun free zone. What bullshit that even our military must remain victims of political correctness. The saddest part is TPTB KNEW this was coming. How the **** did anyone get on base without proper clearance? I smell a rat.

    • There is no info that this is a known suspect like the guy the FBI is looking for. If you remember, Major Hasshat was active duty Army and had access to the base.

  9. So, let’s keep an eye out for these things:

    AR15 used?
    Children dead?
    High-cap magazines?

If none of these are present, then this will fade from the media in 2 days, tops.

    • You mean “AR15AssaultWeaponTheSameWeaponUsedInTheSandyHookKillings”.

Which is of course now it’s official name.

  10. I was initially skeptical that it was a terrorist; I’d think one would strike during the middle of the day when there would be more people around and there would be greater impact on the news cycle. Of course, I wouldn’t rule it out.

I’ve always thought that the concept of a military installation being a “gun-free” zone is even more asinine than trying to make most places “gun-free”. I spent most of 16 September 2013 wishing I could have legally had my handgun at the Navy Yard. Several of my co-workers spent the day learning that a “gun-free” zone is really just a “one gun” zone as soon as it matters.

Whatever his/her/their motivations, I hope they get taken down in short order.

    • Motivations…. You know I used to look for ‘motivations’, too. To try to decipher this and figure out what the hell was going on in their head.

When I heard that the Navy Yard shooter heard voices in his head and thought the government was beaming stuff into his brain through the walls, that’s when I said forget it.

And the crazy, wild-eyed buggers like Lanza and Holmes.

These aren’t even people who just ended up taking some Prozac because work’s been crappy. These are people with completely scrambled headmeats.

  11. After the first shooting, the .mil learned its lesson and armed its soldiers. Right????????????

The .gov is incompetent from the Post office to the CIA – .mil included.

  12. Army- Recruit says he wants to kill soldiers like in Fort Hood. Let’s just cut him loose.

FBI- YESTERDAY! We’re looking for that guy that wants to pull another Fort Hood massacre.

Army- TODAY. Some guy is at Fort Hood, killing people.

    So much WTF!

  13. This is example number one why gun free zones are the dumbest idea out there. War fighters are disarmed at a freaking military base has to be about as stupid an idea that I’ve ever heard. Let’s send them into combat on foreign soil but make them targets at home.

    • This is example number one why gun free zones are the dumbest idea out there.

      Except for gun-free army bases.

  14. Is there any other local, state or federal agency/department that is disarmed at the station, office or base other than the US military?
Fish and Game are armed and I have no problem with that

  15. Now everyone pay attention. This is going to be used as the exact reason the NSA domestic spying is not only needed but needs to be expanded.

  16. We all know, don’t we, that lightning cannot strike twice in the same place?

All military are disarmed (except for MPs) and cannot defend themselves on base due to this disarmament, so Muslim jihadist can use them as target practice. How horrible for the ineptness at the military high command, all idiots, capitulating to the Muslim in Chief.
