UPDATE: As is usually the case, the story in Cincinnati has changed since initial reports. CNN is now reporting three dead in addition to the shooter with two more people wounded.

At least three people were killed Thursday in a shooting at the Fifth Third Center in Cincinnati’s Fountain Square, Police Chief Eliot Isaac said.

The suspect is also dead, Isaac said. Two others were injured, he said.

The shooting began just after 9 a.m. ET. The gunman entered a loading dock and opened fire before entering the lobby of the building, where three or four police officers engaged him, Isaac said.

Police are dealing with the aftermath of a reported active shooter situation in downtown Cincinnati:

“Active shooter incident being investigated at Fifth Third Bank at 511 Walnut Street in lobby and loading dock,” a police spokeswoman said. “More details to follow.”

The first call came in around 9:15 a.m.  Shots were fired in the lobby and loading dock.

Police are still working to clear the Fifth Third building and the 500 block of Walnut Street. The FBI is also on scene.

A suspect is reportedly in custody. It isn’t yet clear if this was intended as a shooting or was part of a robbery gone wrong.

As always, early “facts” in these situations are confused, misreported and frequently incorrect. More as it becomes available.

  1. Baby, if you’ve ever wondered,
    Wondered, whatever became of me,
I’m shootin’ up a bank in Cincinnati,
Cincinnati, call the police on me…

  2. J. Kasich:
You said “gun violence”. So the gun used was violent or someone used a gun to commit violence? They are very different. You might know something we all need to know, so please enlighten us.

  3. The progressive Marxists (yes, Kasich is one; he just doesn’t know it) really love yakking about their “senseless gun violence.”

I, for one, am glad there there was some sensible gun violence today — violence that prevented a murderous nutbag from taking more lives. That’s the kind of gun violence I can get behind.

  4. BREAKING: 20 dead, 400 wounded in Cincinnati auto accidents this afternoon! Why is it that if a gun is involved it makes the headlines?

    • Editor: “Okay Tom, what do you have for me?”
Tom: “Well, turns out that the self driving feature and self parking abilities of all new cars are subject to hacking! There are reports flooding in about cars driving themselves into lakes, crashing into buildings, locking owners in and suffocating them while taunting them about pod bay doors, and-”
Editor: “Yeah, yeah, that’s nice. I’ll see if I can find an opening for the article in today’s line up. Bob, what do you have?”
Bob: “Well, there was a shooting today involving two gang members. Just some punks with .22lr pistols, but-”
Editor: “PERFECT! A gun violence story always gets attention! Put that on the front page, all caps, oh and don’t mention the caliber of the guns. Make it sound super dangerous. If the gang members are under 18, refer to them as youths or children.”

  5. Just curious, but who tries to rob a bank anymore? I thought bank robberies died out with the invention of cameras, bullet proof glass partitions, silent alarms, and the armed security guard. Sure, someone might attempt it, but I can’t think of any recent bank robberies, let alone successful ones. You’d have better luck with the armored truck.

    • That’s why they hit the dock. Pallets of cash move through there, most banks have a pretty secure setup. Even if you were able steal the whole truck you wouldn’t get it out of the dock.

    • Bank robberies have historically always been rare but even so more happen now by quantity (hard to say by percentage) than ever before. Easier and far safer to rob Billy-Bob-Sue-Sam who runs the store though.

This wasnt a robbery. This was terrorism or a vendetta, maybe both.

    • With the advent of debit cards and the like, you know, banks/credit unions don’t typically KEEP large amounts of cash – not even in the cities. I live in a mid-sized city and use a credit union and when I got a settlement check (this is years ago, mind you!) and just wanted to feel ‘well off’ for once in my life, I requested a cash withdrawl of 10,000 dollars only to be told “I’m sorry sir, but that would exhaust the credit unions cash supply so we’re unable to comply”! They’d only give me 2500 bucks and that’s in a city of 450,000 people. SO bank robberies, at least in my uninformed opinion, are a thing of the past and I very rarely even hear about one these days. Just my two-cents-worth. Peace, friend(s) – keep yer powder dry.

    • WHIO and the channels it owns still show commercials about the little report they did on the Wright-Patt shooting that DIDN’T happen this summer.

  6. Hey TAG,
    How about some real NUZE?
I read this page for real information about firearms and society.
I am not getting it here
Why didn’t some armed citizen end this event earlier?
    CCW ban in Ohio banks?

  7. That’s why I rarely leave my Four States Area. My home is Texas, but I travel around Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. In these four states our rights are protected to carry firearms. Things like you see in the Anti-Constitution states rarely happen. This cretin in the Cincinnati bank might be lucky if he got off one shot and then a couple of armed good guys would end his shooting spree. Here more criminal activity is ended by an armed citizen than by law officers. You in Ohio need to get rid of Kasich and get a Governor that abides by the Constitution.
