thesun.co.uk reports that actor Brad Pitt has bought his wife Angelina Jolie a gun range with “people-shaped targets” (the horror!) for the couple’s Miraval estate in southern France.”The actor has splurged £250,000 ($400k) on a shooting range and armoury as a wedding present for her.” And if that’s enough unconfirmed conjecture for you “A source said: ‘Brad had a lot to live up with his wedding gift considering Angelina exchanged vials of blood with her ex-husband Billy-Bob Thornton. But Ange clearly finds shooting an aphrodisiac. When she and Brad were around weapons on the set of 2005’s Mr & Mrs Smith they ended up together. And by letting Angelina de-stress at the range, he’s less likely to get earache indoors. There’s a lot to be said for that when you have six kids.’” I wonder if Branjelina have satisfied all the French firearms licensing laws . . .

  1. does anybody know how the bueatiful pair stand on gun control. if they’re 2a supporters more power to them, if not they’re being hypocritical to say the least.

    • Well they don’t live in the US, that should give you some inclination.
sure France might have strict laws unless you have money and an attorney who speeds the process.
Southern France is home to some of the biggest stars, mainly because of the paparazzi laws in place there. I think you can shoot them on site no questions asked lol 😉

  2. I’m sure that firearms licensing laws in France are just for the little people, and Brangelina won’t have any problems.

    • I was one of the “little people” in France from 75 through 85. Had plenty of firearms in the house, including a 22 semiauto with a silencer that required *NO* license, no tax beyond normal sales tax, no trust or LLC, no fingerprints, background check, no 6 to 8 months waiting, no sign off by the local police, etc.

It is its own system, with categories for certain combinations of firearms, capacity and caliber. Categories include items other than firearms.

1st cat: semi auto pistols cal larger than 30 cal; all military semi autos; all full autos. requires permit to purchase except full autos (restricted)
2nd cat: military aircrafts, tanks, and heavy equipment.
      3rd cat: protective gas/chem equipment
4th cat: all revolvers, certain pistols (see cat 1) , many rifles depending on length, caliber, capacity; pump shotguns; rimfire handguns. Permit required.
5th cat: other long firearms, mostly SxS and O/U shotguns (hunting license for purchase)
6th cat: knives, pepper sprays, other such self defense type weapons
7th cat: rimfires except hanguns; pellet rifle/pistols
8th cat: inert weapons (demilled, etc)

Now, who issues the permit to purchase? The French Shooting Federation (FFT), a non-governmental body that runs 1650 clubs. You have to become a member, and within 6 months can apply for permit weapons (1st and 4th cat, so until then, it’s rimfires). Provides insurance, coaches, organizes competitions. Bit of an NRA (except the NRA only runs one range, to my knowledge, and last I checked no insurance…) Fees depend on the actual club/range you join.

After the FFT gives its blessing, there is a police background check (shall issue type thinking). Permit is issued, you have 3 months to purchase a firearm, or extend the permit up to 5 years.

Now the “bad”: you may only own 12 firearms, and only up to 7 1st cat firearms (guess I won’t be moving to France anytime soon with my arsenal…) Married couple could then own 24/14 respectively. Possession of these categories requires owning a safe, which must be proven at the time of purchase. Firearms then must be registered with the county (equivalent). Each shooter must(!) do three shooting sessions per year, at least 2 months apart; this is not really a profficiency test, since it’s unscored, perhaps more of a familiarity test?

  3. I would totally build a gun range at my house if I could. Currently, my 750 sq ft one bedroom is just a wee bit small for it.

    Someday…

    • Here’s a possible idea for you: a pellet gun range. For the upcoming winter I’m putting a small range in the basement and using an S&W M&P airsoft type gun that handles alot like the real thing and is very accurate. All-in cost, around $150, including a couple of arcade style targets.

Now if Angelina will just respond to my invitation…

      • I think the one bedroom is still a bit small, but I have actually given thought to that. There are actually pretty accurate airsoft replicas of the XDm, which is what I favor, although they’re the full size, not the compact.

But if I do like the idea of a basement shooting gallery. And I hope you hear from Angelina soon.

        • use the longest distance you have in your unit with a decent pellet gun. get carpet squares, i remember they were billed as samples for backstops and a cardboard box to put them in. on the outside of the box tape cards from a poker deck as targets. as the box becomes chewed up rotate or change as needed.

        • for some reason my reply isn’t going through. i’ve found a great indoor range can be made using carpet squares as filler in a cardboard box. tape targets to outside of box and use pellet gun of choice.

  4. @jwm,

The carpet squares are a great idea, thanks. I was planning to use my neighbor lady’s cats as filler. (Sorry, Ralph, but it was my dog’s idea!)

    • dammit i’m glad i don’t drink at the keyboard or it would be a mess now. that was belly laugh good. i used the carpet squares and box in wva during the winters. we didn’t have any indoor ranges and the weather could be snowy and cold. i used a deck of playing cards for targets.

  5. My air rifle does 1250 fps in my improvised backyard range. I have a saw horse with a table top at a 45 degree angle as the stop. 5-25 yards. They have pellets now that break the sound barrier. They’re so loud I rarely use them for fear the neighbors might freak out. Another reason not to use them is they cost more then a .22 bullet!

  6. I saw an inside the actors studio where pitt said his childhood in the midwest was filled with lots and lots of guns and shooting so I think is is probably pro 2a but in his line of work that might be committing career suicide.

  7. They have LOTS of money, and if they want to have a private shooting range, why not? With their fame, it must be close to impossible to go out in public anywhere. Can you imagine Brad Pitt showing up at any public range? He would be pestered for autographs and photos and never get to shoot, same for Angie. I’d love to have a private range, the best I can do is a pellet trap in my basement. I bought a trap rated for .22LR but shoot .177 because of the noise and because of the powder/lead residue left behind when shooting .22LR indoors. I wish I had their kind of money, and good for them that they are enjoying their wealth, and not locking themselves up in a hotel room somewhere, never leaving for decades to avoid the outside world.
