His statement underscores the obvious – to date they have NOT been holding them accountable. The operative word here being “holding”.
Holding is the key. The County Board President and Sheriff Dart are trying to keep the jail empty to the point of tearing down three divisions of county jail. They want to make sure that they will never have to hold inmates again under the theory that it costs too much to house them. Until the residents of the County wake up and realize that the County leaders value money over lives it will keep happening.

Even Garry “street light” McCarthy has been trotted out in the last few daze…I have a solution too. 10year minimum for any gun crime, no juvenile carveouts,chaingangs and mostly arming GOOD people. When you look. At the arrests for gun crimes/ procession you find very few convictions. Many cases are simply dropped as judges set a high bar for evidence and lawyers are good at finding fault. Those that do get convicted receive light sentences. Add in time off for good behavior and early release due to overcrowding, they are quickly back on the streets.
What doesn’t get mentioned is that there are 65,000 gang members organized in some 500 gangs. As each gang can sell $10K in drugs each day, the “gang problem” is a potent voting block.
Can we stop calling it “gun crime” please. It’s just crime. Pure and simple. Adding a modifier to something doesn’t make it more or less criminal. Something that is already illegal doesn’t become more illegal because of adverbs and adjectives. Neither can something that isn’t already illegal suddenly become a crime due to a grammatical error.
It’s just plain crime, committed by plain old criminals.
I agree. I am also concerned that terms like “gun crime” focus *more* on the gun than any crime. If we are not certain we actually have a crime in the first place, we could end up with a 10-year prison sentence for a prohibited person sleeping in a house where there is a gun. Robbing a bank with a gun, fine. But simple possession of an inanimate object, no. Just no.
How can the police be doing their job when 80% of the suspects are not arrested? Homicides are now up to 742 according to http://heyjackass.com/ for the year.

When nobody DARES to talk. Every time a witness comes forward the homicide count goes up by one.
If that is actually the case, then it will never get better until the people (victims) of the neighborhood gun up and flat kill the bangers until normal law and order can be successful again. Personally, I would lean toward eliminating the parents and siblings as well. If we enforce silence in the face of such mindless violence, we have a growing cancer which must be excised before anything will improve.
Because of the gang-bangers ties to the local politicians and judges via bribes and campaign contributions, I think the only way to get Chicago under control is through Federal Government intervention.
Make gang banging a Federal crime, change the venue (to another major city) of all gang-banger trials, and send in a company like Blackwater to assist Eddie Johnson.

Seriously, do you really think making something MOAR ILLEGALER will solve the problem? End drug prohibition if you want to solve the problem. Drug territory and easy money for those with the will to protect it is at the very root of the Chicago violence problem. That and the city administration continually robbing the average citizens of their right to self-defense. The police have known this for some time. Saying it and being quoted is laudable.
The Strategic Subject list contains about 1400 people. Chicago, as a whole, is about 2.7 million, depending upon how boundaries are drawn. People on the SSL make up about 70 to 80 percent of the murderers and murderees.
So, let’s work to disarm the other 2.698+ million.
