    • The ugly truth is Chicago has a gang problem. The vast majority of these murders are committed by black and brown gang members who kill other black and brown gang members. No reason to limit the rights of law abiding citizens to defend themselves. And no cause for sorrow as these ‘victims’ chose their gangster lifestyle.

      • And to emphasize the magnitude of the gang violence problem, I recently found sources that claim that the average life expectancy of a gang member is about 23.

Can you imagine the uproar if all high school football players had an average life expectancy of 23 years?

      • The ugly truth of the matter is that the U.S. has a Chicago problem. Sadly, the problem isn’t just guns. Further sadly, shitcago claims that people outside their borders supplying their crap-ton of POS (D) with guns are the problem. If more people lived up that that false stereotype maybe shitcago could cure itself (if you sewed its vagina closed).

        • “Of the 52 people shot between Friday morning and Sunday night, police said, 40 had prior contact with police. Together, they had 672 arrests on their records.”

          52 ‘people’ shot
40 of the above 52 had prior records
          40 ‘people’ HAD 672 ARRESTS (16.8 per ‘person’) ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Holy sh_t, we are being taxed people.

      • The even uglier truth is that members of the Chicago City Council and the Chicago Police Department are in bed with those gangs. The gangs are allowed to flourish because they help keep aldermen in office and line dirty cops’ pockets.

As the saying goes, “Forget it Jake, it’s Chiraq.”

    • Doesn’t play to the narrative.

The money shot is “white, Christian, conservative”. Preferably with an AR-pattern rifle, and a ‘arsenal’ at home to be discovered. (Note: In this context ‘arsenal’ can be 2 pistols and a partially-full 50rd box of ammo)

  1. Of the 52 people arrested for weapons violations, 40 of them had concealed carry permits.

Could you imagine the reaction out of Shannon, the White House, and the police chief of Milwaukee if that happened?

    • I actually wish they would publish the rate of the shooters that had FOID/CCW cards. I suspect it would be insanely low. I would also be curious how many of these people invalidated themselves via jail time from owning a gun, and how many of these people were on some form of supervised release at the time they committed their crimes.

      • The Texas Department of Public Safety does that here. They post on their website side by side for each criminal offense category, by calendar year, how many convictions there were in total and how many were of a licenced concealed carrier.

You have to do a little math yourself, using total licensee counts and adults population, to get the rates, but that’s available, too.

The data is consistent with other states’ experience in that licensed carriers are the most law abiding major demographic group out there. Now, in fairness, the license and training don’t create law abiding people. There’s self-selection at work here, whereby only people already proven to be law abiding even get licenses.

Still, it’s solid data to refute the lying liberal hysteria that carrying a firearm, even while licensed, somehow turns people into raving lunatics and “Wild Wild West” gunslingers.

        • Not just “licensed” carriers either, Jonathan…. I’m sure you just overlooked that part of the demographics.

Safe, responsible and honest carriers self select to be non criminals whether there is any license or vetting involved at all. Actual criminals, those who harm others intentionally, also self select regardless of licenses, background checks or anything else.

Isn’t that the point POTG have been trying to get across for a very long time?

        • You’re right, ML. I was just focusing on licensed carriers because that’s what the DPS reports address: licensed carriere and the population at large.

By self selection I just meant self selection for inclusion in that part of the report: law abiding owners with carry licenses. Of course there are millions of law abiding owners without licenses, but that’s a larger and different population from that which the OP had referenced. So I didn’t address them.

      • Correct me if I’m wrong Andrew but I can’t ever recall a CC holder involved in any crime. Maybe one FOID holder. They vet the hell out of you. Of course CC is pretty new. The young buck who killed Hydaya Pendleton (who danced for Obama®)pointed a LOADED gun at the po-leece and got probation. Such is life in the city…

      • Insanely low? I would be beyond shocked if one of those shootings was carried out with a legally owned gun. Assuming of course they aren’t lumping in self defense shootings with the attempted murders.

  2. See, and if they hung them for murder, and whipped them in public for attempted murder, we wouldn’t have to put up with this. Eventually we’d run out of criminals. 😉

  3. Man… It’s almost like “gun violence” is an insular big city problem associated with a small specific subset of city residents.

    Huh.

  4. Prior contact is quite the misnomer there. 672 arrests over 40 equals 16.8 16.8 arrests per before the most recent ones. I knew the system wad soft but wow! Even 8 arrests would seem like a lot. Guess it’s just my “white privilege” that I was taught morals and ethics.

    • Well, to be fair, arrest != conviction, and that could be for a number of reasons.

MAYBE the arrestee was innocent and wrongly arrested. That happens occasionally.

The frustrating thing is, though, and I think we can all agree, the “revolving door.” The problems include:

      (1) Ridiculous plea deals to improve performance states for the prosecutor or to cover up prosecutorial or LE incompetence

      (2) Low sentencing for hard core violent crimes

      (3) Clogging up the system (courts and prisons) with non-violent offenders of ‘victimless crimes’

      (4) Various early release/parole for violent offenders

      etc.

I think I read a year or so ago some weird stat that the average VIOLENT offender spends less than 3 years locked up. That could be wrong…I might be remembering incorrectly, but the point was that I found the stat disturbing at the time.

The contrast was the (higher) incarceration times for non-violent offenders of lesser felonies.

The system is backwards and upside down. The bad people are not going to prison (and staying there) and the relatively good people are eaten up destroyed by the system (so they have a good chance to become bad people).

Sounds like it is all going according to the Progressive plan.

      • Another problem is the toxic relationship between the PD and the local community. The Chicago PD has a long and sordid history of brutality and lawlessness that persists. There was the torture program under Burge which resulted in many convictions of innocent people. (Burge got a slap on the wrist because the prosecutors waited until the statute of limitations had passed on the most serious charges). There was the cover up of the Laquan McDonald shooting and tampering with the video tapes in a nearby fast food place. Then there is the secret detention facility where arrestees are held without access to attorneys. And the discovery that many officers deliberately break their vehicle cameras to avoid being taped.

I know many arrestees are not the most sympathetic people, but innocent people get caught up in this too. And the police need a good working relationship with the community to control crime.

        • You realize that “secret detention facility” was proven false, right? Takes an otherwise credible post and drags it down into looney territory.

        • I’ve lived in Chicago. It’s not fixable. I’m surprised there isn’t more cops getting shot. The Daley’s at least kept some kind of lid on it-unlike the Tiny Dancer©…

        • “You realize that “secret detention facility” was proven false, right?”

You realize that it is simply not possible to EVER prove a negative, right? The absence of proof that it *did* exist does not prove that it *did not* exist. Your statement, therefore, is nonsense.

    • Sometimes it seems like being taught morals by parents who are present and engaged really is a white privilege. If so, we really need to find a way to spread that privilege around — but the progressive legions focus only on removing privilege, so…

      • (perhaps you were getting to this with a bit more subtlety, but here I’ll spell it out):

        It’s not a privilege…it’s a choice.

Black parents can choose to stay together and raise their children. Nothing is stopping them. To wit: the millions of non-urban, non-progressive hell-hole black families that do just fine.

All references to “privilege” in contemporary times is a Progressive deflection and blatant bullsqueeze.

  5. You’d think this point would have been sufficiently driven home by every NRA convention. Eighty thousand gun people get together, carrying guns, looking at guns, talking about guns, eating gun sandwiches with extra gun sauce, and… nothing bad happens. Nobody gets hurt.

Chicago has 1,500 people on their Strategic Subject List, most of them forbidden from touching a gun, and they drop faster than nonagenarians in a triathlon.

  6. As has been said more then a few times recently.
Besides gangs being a problem. Democratic Liberalism is the largest problem. Most major cities have had Democratic leaders for decades. All they have done is enslave residents with Government handouts and other free BS.
The Dims have accomplished what they wanted in most large urban areas.
    People Control.
That’s the reality. Dims could care less if urban dwellers kill each other regardless of all the hand ringing.
It costs money to warehouse them. It costs a lot less to control them. If a few innocents die. That’s the price of Liberalism. The controlled don’t want to loose their free government chesse and I-phones. So on it goes.

    • “The Dims have accomplished what they wanted in most large urban areas.”

I have heard similar sentiments before. And yet it never occurred to me just how profound that fact is. Want to know the Progressive Democrat future that is in store for us? Just look at the large urban areas of our nation that have been under Progressive Democrat control for the last 50 years. Yes, that is the direction that our nation is heading if Progressive Democrats gain control of everything.

If that doesn’t disturb just about everyone, I don’t know what else will.

      • My heart goes out to any aspiring dystopian fiction authors who keep having their ideas stolen by the Democrat Party.

      • But, O my goodness, be careful not to vote for Trump! Hillarity will deliver us up much sooner and better! And you can brag about how cool you are while we’re being marched off to the ovens!

    • “Democratic Liberalism is the largest problem.”

And that is because feelings are supreme with Democratic Liberalism / Progressivism … there are no objective, timeless standards of right or wrong, good or bad, noble or malevolent.

    • Ever since I discovered TTAG I have been posting that the threat to liberty doesn’t come from law enforcement. It comes from the criminal gangs that the Democrats use for social control. The BLM movement is nothing more than an attempt to create gang safe havens from which the gangs can extend their control over more area. Do you think the cops are going to engage with gangbangers in middle class areas? Do you doubt that anybody who defends himself from a gangbanger won’t get the full Zimmerman treatment?

      • And, as I’ve been saying for longer than websites were a thing, these gangs are a deliberately organized army.

The spread into the suburbs is the first step of ‘outer invasion.’

I’ve come to believe none of this is an accident.

  7. 52 shootings in a weekend, 52 and that’s every weekend, if it was not for modern trauma care at least half would die. Talk about a ‘Failure of Leadership’ and no change in sight.

  8. This chief better dust-off his resume. He is not a team player. Not spouting the party line that guns, not criminals are the problem.

  9. “Of the 52 people shot between Friday morning and Sunday night, police said, 40 had prior contact with police. Together, they had 672 arrests on their records.” – 40 Of Weekend’s Shooting Victims Had Been Arrested 672 Times, Top Cop Says

NRA. It’s the NRA’s fault. I stubbed my toe this morning too. That also is the NRA’s fault. Anything bad that happens anywhere (especially if a firearm is used) is the NRA’s fault.
