    • Just cuz some shrink somewhere says something dumb is no reason to get TTAG’s collective panties in a bunch. Are you just looking for things to make us mad? Where’s the Truth in that?

      • As a side note, no two psychiatrists in the world see things the same way.
So please carry on, word from a single one means precisely squat shit.

    • Want to stop more mass shootings?
Well, that is obvious, since the mass of mass shooters have been leftists or muslims; designate that liberal/progressive beliefs create mental disease, self-hatred and impotent homicidal rage, leading some of the more mentally unstable to mass murder. So we stop teaching our kids such a destructive and civilizational destroying belief system.

Oh, wait a minute, it is because of liberal/progressives that have controlled our schools for the last 50 plus years and have brain washed our kids that we are facing this crisis.

Hmmm, we are in a pickle, that we are.

      • “Or the government, itโ€™s addiction to oppressing those under it?”

Or the government, itโ€™s addiction to KILLING those under it? There, FTFY.

  1. Some good comments under the letter. Unfortunately they’re powered by Facebook so you have to have an account to leave a comment.

  2. All that from a man that works in a field that has cured ZERO patients to date. The next time you hear a psychiatrist trying to give you moral advice just remember not one of them can claim to have cured a patient.

      • Behavior analysis intervention is the only known treatment for behavior disorders… Chemical intervention/restraint (aka drugging people) is akin to removing the motor out of a vehicle to fix a valve issue; no engine, no problem.

        • I agree that science seems to indicate that behavior analysis, CBT, whatever we call it is most effective.

I would offer that meds are an important component for some folks. If the doc knows how to drill down on the proper cocktail for the patient, it can be quite helpful. But yeah, pumping them full of Xanax and Lithium till they are the walking dead is not the answer.

      • Interesting.

I was just commenting yesterday to my children that “Cognitive Psychology” is the only sub-branch of the field that has any real basis in “observation,” and thus qualifies as science.

That is, those guys seem to spend a lot more time with “what humans do” than with “what it means in some grand sense.”

They are the anti-evo-psych and anti-dream-interpreters.

    • Hey they are still “practicing”. Can’t demand results from an amature. But you have the right idea. pshrinks are the most useless things around. A total scam/fleece the taxpayer and sucker.

    • A psychologist is a person whom the government allows to disperse mind-altering drugs to anyone who pays for them. Nothing more.

    • Psychiatry is the ONLY medical specialty where the doctor is not required to show an ability to cure any patient before being certified to practice the specialty.

      Just sayin’.

The administration of psychotropic drugs does not cure the patient, it only masks the patient’s symptoms. Psychiatrists still have zero clue as to why those individuals are deficient in the chemicals that apparently keep the rest of us (reasonably) sane.

  3. I think blow would be cheaper in the long run.

I can quit any time I like however. Then again, why would I want to? You’re only talking one of the most versatile firearms platforms with the widest selection of calibers with the best aftermarket on the planet.

  4. Dunlop should invite a few death row inmates or Chicago gangbangers home for a week. There’s no guns in his house, so I bet he’ll feel _so_ much safer.

  5. As a Psychiatrist have you ever sat down with an AR15 and asked it to explain its feelings to you? Obviously the guns are doing the killing and not the people behind them.

  6. I’m not addicted, I just like to have ’em around. Knowing they’re close by and I could smoke one if I wanted to is very comforting.

  7. Dr. Dunlop stated the writers of the second amendment would be appalled at a snipers ability to shoot at the rate an AR can deliver rounds.

If George Washington had AR’s, our rebellion against King George would conclude six months after it started.

    • Up gainst Brown Bess? Certainly.

Of course if Washington had had ARs, King George would have had something comparable. Or maybe, even better, like FALs.

    • And, OK, let’s talk about carnage, starting with .50 and larger bullets that the muskets of the time used, and the damage they did when they connected.

Oh, but that must be acceptable carnage because it only involved muskets, right?

      • No military musket maker would have considered using such a small ball as the .50 caliber at the time. The 50 was considered acceptable for hunting light animals through a rifled bore, but not military use. The Brown Bess the colonials would have been facing, and often used themselves, were closer to .75 caliber, but smoothbores of course, for faster reloading and the use of buck and ball.

  8. As a human, I know that aside from a history of violence or addiction, predicting violence is nearly impossible. That’s why I will choose for myself what tools are best to defend myself and my family, thankyouverymuch.

    • “Thatโ€™s why I will choose for myself …”

There’s your problem … as far as Dr. Stephen R. Dunlop is concerned. Don’t you realize that elitists have a moral obligation to dictate what is best for you?

  9. Not an AR-15 addict, by any means. I had exactly one (1) AR-15 before I had the horrific bad luck to have the only boating accident in Colorado history (we don’t leave water lying around on the ground, here–leastwise, not *liquid* water). I had a bunch of non-AR-15 rifles though.

  10. Speaking of additions — how is that drug war going?

How is that drunk teen driving going? Despite all of MADD efforts, the rate is still 20% — same as the day they started. Some years it goes up a little, some years it goes down a little and they make a big press conference but since they began — still 20% on average

Guns are just the excuse of the day — the reality is they are unable to control behavior and they have no idea how to change culture — if they knew how, Chicago would not be the death capital of the USA.

These guys are all about statistics. Let us plot on a map all the shooting deaths over the last 10 years. See a trend? There, that is where you can go to fix the problem leave the rest of us alone.

The best thing about those on the Left, they are great at telling other people what they should do but do not do anything themselves but instead leave others to get their hands dirty and often claim credit for the work of others.

  11. ‘…concern for officersโ€™ safety led to the use of a robot bomb to neutralize the threat.

There goes the notion that a few untrained citizens with guns in public places will make us safer from mass shootings.’

Well then, we need to get rid of our ARs and trade them in for robot bombs. For the children.

  12. I am not addicted to the AR rifle platform.

What I really like is ANY platform that supports a large array of customization, whether that is a firearm platform, computer platform, software platform, tool platform, or any other platform.

  13. ‘…semiautomatic weapons with large magazines are required for a successful mass shooting.’

Obviously he’s never heard of Charles Whitman.

    • Or Aaron Alexis.

      Or Nidal Hasan.

I’m getting the sense that Mr. Dunlop doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

      • No he doesn’t know what the heck he’s talking about, none of these guys do. He was referring to both rifl es and handguns with ‘high capacity magazines’ though, so Nidal Hasan’s FN five-seven with it’s 20 round magazine surely qualifies as ‘high capacity’ in his book.

He also parsed his words to only include mass ‘shootings’, not mass killings. Otherwise you’d have to include Timothy McVeigh. The guys that don’t use guns at all usually rack up bigger body counts than those who do.

        • “He was referring to both rifl es and handguns with โ€˜high capacity magazinesโ€™ though, “

That might be giving him too much credit.

I don’t know that he was specifically referring to rifle AND handgun. I’m not even sure if he knows the difference.

        • ‘Getting rid of civilian assault weapons, including those disguised as sporting guns, and high-capacity semiautomatic handguns is the best answer to limiting mass shootings…’

          Credit where credit’s due.

        • Eh hem. I was responding to the quote you specifically quoted:

“โ€ฆsemiautomatic weapons with large magazines are required for a successful mass shooting.”

Yes, it says ‘semiautomatic weapons’ there, not specifically rifles, but that’s what I was referring to. When anti’s mention ‘semiautomatic,’ they are seem to be usually talking about AR’s or AK’s.

Either way, if Hasan is the only non-example example we’ve given here, the point still stands: there are numerous cases of ‘mass shootings’ that did not involve semi-automatic weapons with high capacity magazines.

  14. Typical psych major… Blanket claims and assertions with no actual science to back it up.

You’re an addict because I say you’re an addict, and if you deny it, that proves you’re an addict.

  15. Holy logic fail Batman!

On one hand, we can’t predict violent behavior. Then on the other hand, he knows that if we gave up our semi automatic rifles, violent behavior would drop.

    Quack, quack, quack.

  16. I think addiction is a dangerous word when placed near anything gun. Can’t we throw in some words in between? Maybe go with “aficionado” then we can be a psychotic aficionado of all things AR.

    • “Addiction” is one of the most misused words in the English language.

The word refers to actual, chemical changes that occur in a person’s body after using a certain drug, that create an actual, chemical need to continue using that drug.

You can be addicted to nicotine, cocaine, opioids, alchohol and other drugs.

You can’t be addicted to sex, food, social media or pornography, and you sure as hell can’t be addicted to AR-15s any more than your wife can be addicted to overpriced shoes.

  17. Let me run that through the translator…

โ€œAs a psychiatrist I admit that I lack the basic understanding of human nature. I also lack the fundamental understanding that since the beginning of mankind’s history, there has been violence. I can not comprehend the fact that some humans will always be violent.I should resign my doctorate as well as my position as a psychiatrist due to these things.โ€ โ€“ Dr. Stephen R. Dunlop

  18. “U.S. should ban guns of mass destruction”

Does he mean guns of mass destruction like this? I don’t think he understands what mass destruction means.

  19. The AR was not even really on my list until the democrats started ranting about them. Didn’t know much about them. I figured I would get one someday after I had the other guns I wanted. I was just getting into C&R milsurp rifles and bullseye pistol when the ban talk started. I didn’t panic buy but I put off buying mil-surps and pistols and started acquiring parts for a build. It was strictly an “in your face Obama” political statement. Now I understand why they are so popular. I have a fun, cheap to shoot, customizable rifle and I’m thinking about building another in a larger caliber and it’s all thanks to the authoritarian democrats. A fan? Yes. Addicted? No.

    • Yeah I’m with you Wiregrass. I’ve only been at this maybe 6 years. My main thing is I have nowhere to shoot one(and $). But that’s changing and it’s off to the races…

      • I am lucky enough to belong to a private club with 25, 50, 100 and 200 yard ranges 3 miles from my house. It’s gets bad when I have yard work to do and I can hear people over there shooting. Good luck to you finding a place. The way I built my AR over several months it wasn’t all that hard on the pocket book.

  20. Well, I admit to really enjoying building them. Is that an addiction? How many constitute an addiction? 8, 12?

    • Yes. If you have 8 to 12 ARs on your person right now, then yes, you have a problem. That’s what pistols are for.

  21. Didn’t the attack in Nice just destroy this guys entire argument? It’s not the weapon, it’s the ideology.

    • Yep. Don’t forget ax & knife dude on the train in Germany. At some point you can’t try to understand a mad dog. You just have to deal with it.

      Tom

  22. Don’t have an AR yet. I just want a full-length FN-15 to slap an ACOG and Knight’s RIS/grip onto, but sadly funds are lacking for the rifle alone. I did score a set of Knight’s rails for cheap on Ebay of all places.

  23. Doctor addicted to progressivism is going to lecture us? Beotch puleez.

Hey doc, instead of sweeping the mentally unstable under the rug, how about y’all address the issue and fix those people out there, SUCCESSFULLY, for a change? Hmm?!

    Until then, please STFU.

  24. After I pick up a couple of lowers with 2 stage triggers that I ordered from RifleGear, and maybe get an additional .50 Beowulf upper, and finish tuning my second AR-10, when my 13th or 14th builds are finished, I think I’ll be ok.

  25. I am addicted to quirky guns. My finances don’t permit me to buy them as much as I’d like though.

I’d like to get my hands on one of those Leinad side by side derringers but they are a rare find. Either that or a century arms side by side in 20 gauge or .410. Probably the 20 gauge because I could shoot it more often.

  26. I like AR-10’s a lot more than AR-15’s personally.

Since it’s less than 15 its not as deadly right? They don’t have to ban the 10s. ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. I am not addicted to “assault rifles”, because frankly, my AR-15’s function just fine without that icky, scary black plastic the progressives hate so much. ๐Ÿ™‚ Seriously, you can tell how little someone knows about guns by their use of the term “assault rifle.”

Oh, and the last time I had a weapon of mass destruction in my possession was a GLCM missile in the early 1990’s, and before that, a B61 back in the 80’s.

  28. I’m the only one here without an addiction to AR’s? Wow, the rest of you sicko’s can’t be trusted with firearms. You got addictions.

You have til Friday to bring all those weapons of mass destruction to my garage for safe keeping, you demented bastards.

  29. “If Americans want fewer mass shootings, they need to give up their addiction to assault rifles and similar weapons of mass destruction.โ€ As misguided as the good Dr. may be, I am afraid the next administration will be taking his advice and writing us a prescription we don’t want to get filled.

  30. No AR-15 addict here, but when government tells me I canโ€™t have something many others in the country can have it makes me want it.

  31. Ah. Baiting for comments again!? I’m not playing.

Post another dumb comment from Shannon and maybe I’ll make derogatory comments about her nose.

  32. Are you asking am i an AR addict or an Assault Rifle addict, because the title of the post and the douchebag author are saying two different things. Unless you just want to concede the ability to summarily redefine terms to the liberal anti gun wackos. Having said that, I doubt i’ll ever own an assault rifle, as i dont have the spare 10k laying around for an autosear, but i’m betting it would be pretty addicting…until you pay for the ammo

    • +1

I refuse to accept the ‘redefinition’ of Assault Rifle …unless they provide me a free autosear! ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. This lazy doctor should go back to treating sick people like Adam Lanza and learn why he and his profession have failed us.

  34. I’m not addicted to ARs, but I do have a serious Hoppe’s jones.

But I’m getting treatment for it. My shrink recommended Break Free CLP.

BTW, I just returned from a doctor’s appointment. He says that I have alcohol and tobacco deficiencies. I tell ya, that doc is expensive but he’s worth every penny.

  35. Psychiatrists are all quacks, went into the study because they’re nuts and wanted to understand *themselves*. They should be banned.

OTOH, yes, I am an AR addict and happy about it. If that dickhead would like to come and take mine, I hope he gives me time for an “eenie-meenie” game to decide which caliber he gets the ammo for.

  36. Someone needs to pull the medical license from this Stephen R. Dunlop, MD.
Do they have an AA or addicted AR owner’s?
“Hi. I am glenux. I am addicted to guns.”
I am surprised he didn’t throw in a phallic symbolism from Freud.

  37. First, most psychologists/psychiatrists are products of very Liberal educational programs. Trust me, with a Masters in Human Behavior I know the environment.

Second, I don’t know, does three ARs in 5.56 and one in .45ACP count as addicted? Well, gee, maybe I am or maybe I just like them just like other people like old cars, stamps or Pokemon.

A more idiotic statement than this guy’s I have never heard.

  38. Slowly starting to acquire parts for my first AR. I’m thinking I’ll make it specifically to terrify regressive, statist, and authoritarians with all the features from the 1994 AWB and some extras.

  39. sig sent me some 30rd ar magazines as a bonus to some other purchase (rifle bag?) a while back. those mags spawned two 80% lowers and a jig. i fear for where this might be headed… but i’m far too careful to ever develop any sort of addiction.
