I’m not sure if the smart gun in this Blade Runner 2049 trailer prevents children — born as adults, apparently — from messing with someone else’s pistol. But I doubt that the fact that the Blade Runner’s gat is lit up like a Christmas tree simply for atmospherics. Then again, yeah, it probably is.
It’s the same gun from the original Blade Runner movie. It has been an iconic prop since. It was not a “smart gun” then and I doubt it will be an issue now. Rachel was able to pick it up in the original to shoot Leon who was in the process of attacking Deckerd. Quit looking for something that isn’t there.

Not necessarily correct. Dekard had ample time to program in Rachel’s biometrics. He did just scan her after all. The only possible non smart gun would be Leon’s old school COP .357 four shot derringer. After all, this takes place in a dystopic future shit hole city where cops and blade runners have all the power. Not the “little people”.A smart gun would fit right into that society. That is my analysis and I am sticking g with it.

In the original movie, the ground buses and taxis have warning signs stating the drivers are armed and only accept credit cards, no cash. It seems the little people are armed in the world of BR, but it probably supposed to be a bad thing.
I want so *very much* to love this upcoming movie. BR was one of the defining movies in my ‘yoot’.

I dunno. It’s from the same guy who directed Arrival, and that was a pretty good movie. At first I hated the fact that Gosling is in this movie, but he can act well if he wants to (he was horrible in Drive, but surprisingly funny in The Nice Guys). So who knows… However, I’m not sure how I feel about him driving what looks like a (tactical) Aptera, since they went bankrupt a while ago. And I don’t expect this sequel to be anywhere near as good as the original. It just can’t be.
Perhaps, but remember Ridley Scott is still (somewhat) involved. so I still have some hope that it may not be the original, but it may not suck either….
It already looks much, much better than the Ghost in the Shell movie Hollywood made. Heck, if it wasn’t for the original Blade Runner, then Black Magic M66, Appleseed, and the whole Ghost in the Shell franchise wouldn’t even exist.
If you don’t have a fake python around Joanna Cassidy, Daryl Hanna doesn’t rage die and Rutger Hauer doesn’t dislocate Harrison Ford’s finger, then what have you, I say. All is lost, just do a star wars back story or earthday celebration cartoon version of Logan’s Run.

Logan’s Run remake has been floating around for about 20 years IIRC. I heard it’s meandering it’s way through the system, and i think it’s finally in pre-production.

Blade Runner is one of the all time greats of sci-fi, and noir, and you go ranting about smart guns?
Any way, in the setting in which the gun is presented, it’s an energy weapon, i.e. a blaster. Thus the LEDs, the superfluous knobs and switches and all that are meant to convey that it’s a futuristic police issue sidearm that fires globs of plasma or a particle beam of some kind.
My stepfather has one of the most extensive collections of early & classic sci-fi (and westerns!) I’ve ever seen, and one of the first real books I ever read (I think I was about 7) was “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”. I picked it out of the shelf because the title, author’s name, and cover just tickled my boy brain’s interest on several levels. It kinda blew my mind a bit; afterwards P.K.D. & Heinlein helped form my very eclectic libertarianism.
A year or two later I watched Blade Runner on our new Betamax player; that sparked a fascination with futuristic firearms, perpetually drenched dystopiasian cyberpunk, experimental euro-electronica, flying cars….. and hot/confused/deadly androids.
I’m super excited about the new one, because the Blade Runner book sequels were pretty tedious & disappointing. If it is as good as I hope, then I’ll finally be able to overwrite the memory of their mealymouthed storyline.

LAPD 2019 Blaster
Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is armed with a non-designated, unnamed blaster throughout the film. The prop was constructed from parts of a Steyr Mannlicher .222 Model SL and a Charter Arms Bulldog revolver. Side covers were added to cover the Bulldog’s cylinder, and different bolt heads and screw heads were used to offer an illusion of knobs and controls. The gun was also equipped with at least 6 LED lights, though not all of them worked throughout the production. Several other characters are seen handling Deckard’s gun at times, notably Rachael (Sean Young). Blade Runner Holden (Morgan Paull) is seen very briefly drawing a similar blaster at the beginning of the film. LAPD officers have black resin casts of the hero prop in their holsters, but they are just barely seen.
I recall reading somewhere that the original movie prop blaster was sold at auction for ~$250k. I really hope I’m wrong about that…
blade runner was pretty boring the first time around. i saw it again 25yrs later without the overdubbed narration and immediately placed it on my short list of great films. if your options include the last, most recent “director’s cut” view that one.
if the new one is a sequel it might be good. tough act to follow, though. as stated above, i don’t have my hopes up.

For the record, the fact that the blaster only worked for the designated user, is a BIG part of one scene in the book, which was called “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep”.
It looks to me like this movie is going to be a lot closer to the original book (though, in the book, he also had a wife).
