Biden Uses Lies to Smear Anyone Who Opposes His Anti-Gun Agenda as Complicit in the Deaths of Children

[Biden] does not want to talk about the details of [the 1994 assault weapons ban], which would reveal that the category of firearms it targets is defined by functionally unimportant features such as folding stocks, pistol grips, and barrel shrouds. He does not want to address the basic problem with such laws: They leave untouched guns that fire the same ammunition at the same rate with the same muzzle velocity as the prohibited models.

Biden instead insists that everyone knows the 1994 “assault weapon” law, which expired in 2004 and included a ban on the sale of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, reduced mass shootings. “In the 10 years it was law,” he says, “mass shootings went down. But after Republicans let the law expire in 2004 and those weapons were allowed to be sold again, mass shootings tripled. Those are the facts.”

There is little evidence to support the implication that the ban reduced mass shootings. Nor does it seem that the law had an important impact on gun violence generally.

“It is premature to make definitive assessments of the ban’s impact on gun crime,” University of Pennsylvania criminologist Christopher Koper warned in a 2004 report commissioned by the Justice Department. Koper and his co-authors noted that the use of “assault weapons” in gun crimes (primarily pistols rather than rifles) had declined in the six cities they examined, although that change “was offset throughout at least the late 1990s by steady or rising use of other guns” equipped with “large capacity magazines” (LCMs).

“The failure to reduce LCM use has likely been due to the immense stock of exempted pre-ban magazines,” Koper et al. said. “Because the ban has not yet reduced the use of LCMs in crime, we cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation’s recent drop in gun violence.” If the law were renewed, they said, “the ban’s effects on gun violence are likely to be small at best and perhaps too small for reliable measurement.”

That report focused on the impact of restricting LCMs, which it suggested “could have nontrivial effects on gunshot victimizations” if it actually succeeded in reducing the supply available to criminals. Notably, the report did not treat the distinction between “assault weapons” and other semiautomatic firearms as important (emphasis added): “The few available studies suggest that attacks with semiautomatics—including [assault weapons] and other semiautomatics equipped with LCMs—result in more shots fired, more persons hit, and more wounds inflicted per victim than do attacks with other firearms.”

Koper et al. noted that the “assault weapon” ban “targets a relatively small number of weapons based on features that have little to do with the weapons’ operation, and removing those features is sufficient to make the weapons legal.” Biden himself has conceded that the 1994 ban did not affect the lethality of legally available firearms, noting that it allowed the sale of guns that were “just as deadly.” That is also true of the new, supposedly improved version that Biden is pushing.

“Evidence for the effect of assault weapon bans on mass shootings is inconclusive,” the RAND Corporation said in a 2020 review of research on state bans. It called the impact of such laws “uncertain.” Last week, RAND researcher Andrew Morral likewise noted that studies of “assault weapon” bans “don’t yet provide enough scientific evidence to indicate what their effects might be.”

What about the claim that Biden made in his speech? “By some definitions,” Morral writes, “mass shootings declined in the United States during the period of the federal ban, but because mass shootings remain, at least in a statistical sense, relatively rare, and because rates of mass shootings are highly variable from year to year, there are methodological challenges to reliably detecting even fairly strong effects for these laws.”

Biden not only ignores these subtleties; he refuses to acknowledge that there is any controversy at all about the impact of the 1994 ban. “These are the facts,” he says, implying that anyone who thinks otherwise is either woefully misinformed or maliciously dedicated to promoting the murder of schoolchildren.

  4. Not only does Biden compulsively LIE to advance his deceitful and unconstitutional anti-gun agenda but some folks don’t seem to know there’s another demonic level to his dishonorable deeds. Biden has not only recently denied the requested mandates for arming teachers and providing hardened security officers and building security enhancements for schools, but he also denies federal funds for school lunches to school districts that refuse to teach woke concepts and provide LGBTQ programs to elementary students. I don’t know of any other American political party that will starve people, including children, in to cooperation with corrupted politics. This lowest tactic is common however amongst dictators and the Communist Party.

  6. There are too many people on the pro-gun, pro-2A, pro-American side of this that will happily agree that the AR15 is an assault rifle. Too many people that are convinced that these things use ‘clips’ and is capable of taking down aircraft from 2000 feet. People that agree since they don’t use them for hunting when they hunt that they have no other use. We have on our side an element that also sees it as a useless contraption that should be banned.

    But then few seem to realize that Biden is NOT playing with a full deck and is not fit for office. When he says things like this, he is believed. Regardless of any degree of manipulation to take these public/policy stances. Too many people are just taking whatever he says as gospel simply because he says it. This article presents a few facts and a bit of history but those that think government knows better will refuse to accept such things.

    We saw this with Covid19 too. So many people in the general population were motivated by the fear mongering.

    Mental health, and ‘criminally insane’, issues that lead to and are the driving cause of homicides or violence or harm (including self harm) of any genre category of murders, suicides, harms, where a plethora of methods are used, are very common. In fact, these mental health and ‘criminally insane’ issues are so common that everyone reading these words now will today (and any day), if you go out in public for at least 3 hours minimum daily, ‘encounter’ in some manner (e.g. passing by them in a store or while driving on the streets, etc…) a minimum (on average) of 83 people who are strangers to you that have the mental health or ‘criminally insane’ issues that lead to and cause such homicides or violence or harm.

    Over 100,000 people nationwide, between June 1st 2001 and June 1st 2022, used the drug overdose method for suicide (including attempts), despite over 90% of them having access to a firearm. 32% of those were attempts that were not successful the first time, but within 2 months of the failed attempt, despite mental health intervention and other methods, over 80% of that 32% were successful by use of drug overdose. As you read these words, you have already encountered, in some fashion, if you spent at least 8 hours each day in public for the past two days, at least 32 people in the past two days who are contemplating possible suicide by drug overdose.

    If you spend at least 8 hours in public daily, you have encountered in the last three days in some manner, at least 37 people who have committed some form of a violent harmful act against another within the last 48 hours before you encountered them. You will also be targeted as a potential victim of a violent crime at least three times for every 8 hours you spend in public.

    You have, on average, for every four hours you spend in public, a .000021% chance of encountering anyone who will become a ‘mass shooter’ or is considering committing a ‘mass shooting’ (no matter the definition used by government or gun-control advocates). On average, for every four hours you spend in public, you have an over 70% chance of encountering a person who will (possibly if given the chance) commit a violent act against you or another or their self (not including mass shooting) either with or without a firearm.

    We live in a crazy, hostile, dangerous, world. ‘mass shootings’ are the very least of the issues and the cause or reason has nothing to do with firearms.

  13. Here’s a possible answer to the problem. Each state can use some of their own State National Guard. They could send them to the F.A.S.T.E.R. program. And rotate the guards out so that every member of the state’s national guard, has a chance as a guardian in the schools.

    I’m sure there would be people who would say this is just a recruiting tool.

  14. Wow!!! This is the first time I have seen anything good come out of East Germany. So this was good enough for the Socialists/communists. But not good enough for the little boys in the West. Now it makes perfect sense, why the American socialists were so against the Boy Scouts in America. They did not want Young American boys learning about tanks and other weaponry.

    Or because I refuse to bow to the current narrative, or anyone or anything else, I must be somehow to blame for what others choose to do.
    My father went over the beach a few days after the D-Day invasion. Followed Patton all the way across France and Germany, lived in foxholes and road ditches for most of the time he was there. He lost friends and saw many good men die so some demented old fool could demand we give up rights he and his fellow soldiers fought and bled to establish and keep.
    Sorry Joe, I will not submit, nor comply with any demands for the reduction of our rights and liberties. My Father, and myself have shed our blood and lost friends and family to help secure those rights and liberties you wish to deny us.
    Gun control has nothing to do with safety of our children, public safety in general, nor anything to do with some fantasy of reducing violent crime. And everything to do with control of the citizenry by the politicians and bureaucrats.
    Those demanding disarmament want nothing less than the power to rule rather than govern by the consent of the governed.

  16. Selective Fire and Full Automatic Weapons are NOT, referencing federal law, prohibited, forbidden for “civilians” to own. There is a rather tiresome procedure to go through, and the payment of a $200 tax. Assuming the individual clears the federal background check and gets local approval, the next problem is the current price of the things, which has escalated sharply since passage of the Hughes Amendment. Others can discuss that fiasco should they wish.

    The next problem might lie with state law. Several of the 50 states flatly prohibit the ownership of automatic weapons, aka machine guns and or selective fire capable arms by the private citizen. Check your state of residence. Pennsylvania is not a “prohibitor”, though getting the OK from your county sheriff could be a problem or not.

    Re gun laws, have you contacted your elected reps. lately?
