Aurora, Colorado Police Chief Dan Oates has confirmed reports that investigators in the Batman Massacre found a 100-round drum-style rifle magazine at the scene of the crime. Even before the discovery, Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s (D-N.J.) office announced plans to reintroduce legislation restricting rifle magazine capacity. “If reports are correct and a high-capacity gun magazine was used to commit these awful murders, Senator Lautenberg will absolutely renew his effort to limit the availability of this dangerous firearm attachment,” Lautenberg’s PR guy told The Huffington Post. “Lautenberg, one of the most vocal gun control advocates in the Senate, introduced a bill to limit high-capacity magazines following the shooting of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords . . . The bill went nowhere.” With a bit of luck, this one will follow it. Still, watch this space.

  1. I predicted this on my local forum right after the 7:00 PM presser, along with online purchases of ammo and magazines.

  2. Here we go again. Skip reality:

NO weapon, or its attachment, is dangerous, until a dangerous person uses it thusly!

    Nous Defions

  3. They’ll have to ban magazine pouches next, because the bad guys are just gonna stock up on low cap mags and use those

  4. Interesting, considering photos of the AR in question clearly show a 30-round mag in it.

Presumably “at the scene” means “in his car” or some such. I wonder if he had any high capacity cigarette lighters as well. I mean, they can literally light hundreds of cigarettes.

  5. i live in ca. every time i mention the lousy gun laws here someone pipes up and tells me to move. if this nj dems has his way with magazines and lord only knows what else, where you gonna move to, canada. i’ve said it before, we are all americans regardless of where we live and we need to stick together. in november if you vote independet, democrat or simply don’t vote you’re helping people like this that will not stop until they get your guns.

    • Considering that Gary Johnson, an independent, has taken a better stance on gun rights than Mitt Romney and Obama, I politely disagree with your opinion.

      • Exactly. We’re supposed to believe in Romney’s conversion to the Second Amendment faith? How far along in his urge to be president did that happen?

        • I would rather take my chances with Romney. Dangerous as he seems to many here, compared to Obama, he seems like an utter lamb to me. Think this one through carefully … whatever you do, should any of you EVEN CONSIDER to vote for Obama thinking it will ‘gift’ you a Paul in 2016, your are my enemy, and a complete fool, and you should be ashamed of yourself for having that perverse thought. Those that are surpirsed to here that some are even thinking of this, take a look around …

        • your are my enemy, and a complete fool, and you should be ashamed of yourself for having that perverse thought.

So if someone disagrees with your view, you coerce them into voting the same? Damn, you sure convinced me to vote for Romney.

        • TO coerce is to push someone to do something by threat or by force, so which of those have I done to you? Get a brain! The only thing I did was state my opinion, and offer food for thought particularily for those who do not realize how dangerously close we are to having four more years of this current fraud in office, and all that comes with it. What I said stands, anyone who votes Dem this election as a ploy to try to get what they REALLY want on the 16 ballot is an idiot and my enemy. Vote for whoever the heck you want! Just take a good look in the mirror if you vote dem, to see what a braindead dolt looks like.

        • I believe that if we keep a watchful eye on a GOP Congress, then Romney won’t have any bad bills (re guns anyway) to sign. While I think he is a squish, he’s much less likely than Obama to use Executive measures against the 2nd Amd, especially since he can’t have the NRA against him when he runs for reelection.

        • Again, your tirade is not going to win you any points. Labeling other voters your enemy is just plain bad persuasion. I am not going to vote for Romney just because some dumbass says I’m “his enemy.” What garbage and vitriol.

(The irony of the mirror comment is lost on you.)

      • your lone independent has how much influence in dc. say what you want about the gop they’re much less damaging to our gun rights than the dems. notice which party our man from nj is with. boxer ,pelosi, feinstein, schumer. i will say it til it hurts, the only way to stop this crap is to spank the dems so hard their great grandkids will carry the bruises.

        • spank the dems so hard their great grandkids will carry the bruises.
Lol man, what did their grandkids ever do to you? This vitriol ain’t gona win you any converts, bro.

    • God, I live in California too. I am so sick of this liberal state and I wish it was just as easy as moving. The people who tell you that should be told to move as well because they are most likely part of our problem!

  6. Another tragedy, another wannabe tyrant from a laughingstock of a state eager to boost his career with it. May he burn in hell.

  7. I want someone to confirm that he actually used it. He left a Glock in the car.

It seems like it took 9 minutes for the first 911 call. How long does it take to change 30 round mags?

    • How long does it take to hit the deck, pull your phone out, and dial 911? Seriously, 9 minutes before someone in there got some common sense?

      God damn, America….

    • The reports say that he fired strings of six shots at a time and paused to pretend that he stopped shooting, so that victims would get up into the line of fire. I think many of the victims were kept pretty busy trying to, oh I don’t know, not die.

  8. I think I heard somewhere that his high cap AR mag jammed. The trusty ol’ 30 rounders are what I’d use anyway.

That doesn’t mean we should ban the mags.

Do hi cap mag bans apply to belt feds?

  9. To the control freak, any magazine is high capacity. Of course, that’s only until magazines are all banned. Then it’ll be those dangerous operable firearms that we have to ban. Fortunately, this has no chance of passing, and barring a massive shift to the left in every election, it’s going nowhere even after November.

  10. I’m sure something is going to come out of this. It might be city and state bans, or it could be the 92′ awb all over again. We should all be nervous. Your elected officials are going to start telling you whats “best” for you, and your not going to like it.

  11. I don’t know. What is the reason an ordinary guy without a FFL needs to own a 100-round clip? Were all those people threatening his life?

    • Isn’t it easier to just load one giant magazine filled with bullets than to have to swap out magazines every 30 rounds? But besides the logistics of it, who cares what I do with my own hard earned money? Is anyone forcing you to buy it? No? then let the people that want to buy it, buy it. And if your not interested, don’t. If there’s enough people like you then it’ll self regulate itself and the company will go out of business. Also, if you think 100 is too much, then someone else will think 30 is too much, then 10, then no need for magazines, one bullet at a time. Are you also siding with Mayor Bloomberg that we shouldn’t be able to buy large sodas? Where’s all that thirst that needs to be quenched? I say to hell with the protectionist. Give me my 100 round magazine and a Big Gulp and let me die in peace of a gun malfunction or diabetes.

      • Its days like these when politicians and the media take a tragedy and push their agendas and beliefs onto us. This is what they live for. It is days like this when we need to remember that the guns we own protect us from these same entity’s.
Oil up your guns – they are coming

      • The difference is that the big gulp only puts you in danger. The 100-round magazine puts all your neighbors in danger.

        • @mike:
“Come on Smith, guns don’t kill people — but they sure help!” –Paul Giamatti

        • I think the point is that if someone breaks into my house and steals my 3-liter soft drink, he can’t use it to go on a killing spree.

    • Dave, you obviously do not understand or believe that the purpose of the Second Amendment is so that you can stand against your own government should it become tyrannical. The Second Amendment is not about sport shooting, hunting or self-defense against criminals; although it protects the right to keep and bear arms for those purposes as well.

      • Low IQ Dave is just another MikeB (or MikeB under a different name). Just ignore him and he’ll go away.

        • When people like you resort to name-calling, that means they know they lost the argument.

        • Don’t mind Totenglocke, he happens to insult every poster he disagrees with. That is the GOP way of constructing arguments, you know.

      • Actually, the 2nd Amendment is one of the few that explained the reason and the purpose. “A well regulated militia.”

If it had said “unregulated militia”, that would have been a different matter.

        • The second amendment as RATIFIED by the state’s.

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Maybe you can explain how for the entire history of English language, that the independent clause, a complete sentence capable of conveying a clear meaning, and must first exist for a dependent clause to have meaning, has always set the meaning of the complex sentence. (“the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”)

Yet some now infer the dependent clause, an incomplete sentence, incapable of conveying a clear meaning (A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State) is now the determinator of the complex sentence meaning and history and English scholars have all been wrong throughout the history of written English. Have at it, but warn us when Hades will be freezing over for you actually having data to support your claim.

Lets see, have you removed the 30 plus references from the congressional writings 1774-1789 & the federalist papers showing well regulated as to meaning well trained in the arts of war? Much less all those dictionaries that say the same thing? No, you haven’t. Reference Karpeles Museum, CA.

          http://www.rain.org/%7Ekarpeles/

Maybe you removed that original draft of what became the second amendment. You know, the one that was clearly written as a collective right, but then was changed to what exists today. Why did our founding fathers change the amendment draft if it was what they wanted? Oh that’s right, actions do speak louder than words. Ref Karpeles Museum, CA again.

          original proposed draft
of
the right to keep and bear arms
of the
BILL of RIGHTS
(17 TH of 20 amendments)
on display at the Karpeles Manuscript Library
Santa Ana, California
“That the people have a right to keep and bear arms; that a well regulated Militia composed of the body of the people trained to arms is the proper, natural and safe defense of a free State. That standing armies in time of peace are dangerous to liberty, and therefore ought to be avoided as far as the circumstances and protection of the community will admit; and that in all cases the military should be under strict subordination to and governed by the civil power.”

          http://www.wemett.net/2nd_amendment_(original_draft).html

Then of course, here is the logic failure the anti’s always have. They always fail to prove, that the miltia existed before the armed individual.

Funny how all that was before the 2008 rulings eh?

Funny how in the 2008 Heller ruling all 9 justices agreed that bearing arms was an individual right. That 5-4 vote was on the constitutionality of the Washington D.C. gun ban, read it, you will see!

    • why does an ordinary guy need access to the internet? after all, the web is full of dangerous ideas and instruction manuals. are we ordinary guys less empowered or important than other than ordinary guys?

      • That is actually a good analogy. I usually ignore most of the responses on this site, because they are just knee-jerk reactions and political speeches about Obama.

The difference is that the internet contains violent ideas, but 100-round magazines actually enable that violence. The U.S. Constitution is full of such “minor” differences.

You are allowed to talk about killing someone. You are not allowed to promote it. You are allowed to talk about how a 100-round magazine would make mass murder easier, but you should not be allowed to go buy one unless you have a valid reason.

Do you own a 100-acre compound, that you want to defend from a tyrannical government? Ha, Ha. Just kidding. If the government comes to get you, they are going to shoot at you from the next county.

        • 100 round magazines jam repeatably, but anti gun extremists refuse to acknowledge such facts as their mental capacity is so limited as to be unable to process real adata and facts to control their emotional and delusional outbursts.

    • Low Brainuse Dave:
I don’t have to justify my exercising my Freedom to ANYONE. 10 round, 30 round, 100 round; doesn’t matter. What does is that We, the People, are supposed to be calling the shots (no pun intended), not dessicated dinosaurs with a hate for Freedon such as Lautenberg.

Unless and until the VERY SAME RULES apply to “government”, the laws are illegitimate, immoral, unethical, unconstitutional, illegal, and certainly not to be obeyed.

If there is a reason to be angry here, it’s that no one could possess the proper tool(s), firearms, to defend themselves because of the asinine policies of the theater owners.

This violates the 1st rule of self defense: BRING A GUN. I will not voluntarily go anywhere that I cannot possess the means to defend myself.

      • The same rules should apply to government and citizens? That is silly.

SWAT teams are trained for thousands of hours in how to use fully automatic weapons, and how to respond to shootings. The average gun owner is not.

The laws passed by an elected body and upheld by the Supreme Court are illegitimate? Actually, by definition, they aren’t.

        • Then how did they respond properly to all these incidents, oldest dated May 20th 2012, on Keep & Bear Arms, which if one reviews all the websotes collating police and media incident reports avg 80 per month and thats just the ones reported, eh einstein?

    • Maybe because they want to.

IF I were to wish to perpetrate a similar crime(which I don’t), then I’d stick with the known reliability of standard capacity magazines, because I can change magazines a LOT faster than I can diagnose & clear a stoppage.

    • I have actually been saying the same thing for a while. It is just that after a horrible nightmare, people are more likely to listen.

Don’t blame me just because your philosophy is not supported by current events.

  12. Is it me or do these mass shootings always seem to happen just before some unpleasant legislation (UN GUN BAN) is about to be signed into law?

  13. Some former NYPD dick on Hannity last night stated that having a 100 round ‘clip’ is a federal offense lol

  14. Politicians who like to bathe in the blood of victims to further their personal agenda are lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut. Bottom feeding sumbags that just need to STFU…but they won’t. Rahm was right.

  15. I’m willing to be reasonable here. I’ll concede 100 rounds is way too much, let’s set the limit at 99 and we’ll all be happy.

    • You kidding dawg? We need a half round limit, dawg. That ought to be enough to defend yoself, right? 😉

  16. We must resist any attempts to limit citizens’ rights to purchase the weapons and accessories that are legal to purchase today. As others have said, the gun control lobby will never stop demanding further controls. Also, as Virtualjohn pointed out, the 2nd Amendment was to protect us against a tyrannical government. Most people think this is absurd in the the modern USA, but Obama and his allies are true Hugo Chavez wannabes, and if they can maintain power long enough, they are capable of attempting government actions we never would have believed possible.

For all those Ron Paul supporters out there, you need to recognize that your man cannot win election this year and that anything other than a vote for Romney increases the chance that Obama will win reelection. If that happens, this wonderful, special country so brilliantly conceived by our Founders, will almost certainly never recover because not only will Obama be even more disdainful of the rule of law than he is now, but he will name 2 or 3 more Supreme Court justices who will legalize his actions and they will remain on the bench for decades. It will be exactly what Hugo Chavez has done in Venezuela. A vote for anyone other than Romney or an abstention is the same as 1/2 half vote for Obama, and you will be partly responsible if Obama wins.

      • vote your conscience. if it aids obama and his supporters in any way you’re voting to put chains on your grandkids.

        • The false left-right dichotomy that keeps the democrats AND republicans in business is already putting them on both of us.

Voting for either of these a$$holes just further perpetuates it.

        • Yep. People forget that if they dont like any candidate, they have a obligation to abstain. 40% did so in the last presidential election, and another 10% were disqualified. If enough people don’t vote, then the government will lose even more legitimacy, and the shooting can finally begin.

        • Obama is not going to institute white slavery in the United States. Anyone who thinks that is a valid reson for voting is fooling themselves.

Here is a random fact: The average two-income family makes 15% less in real terms than a one-income family made 30 years ago.

The U.S. Economy has been hijacked by the ultra-rich, and the middle class has been bled dry. The top 1% in our economy have so much money that they have bought both political parties.

But because Democrats are still willing to increase taxes on the top 1%, those people have spent billions taking out ads that “Obama is going to take away your guns”.

After all, if they were to advertise their real reason for hating him (that he will tax their luxury yacht), no one would care.

        • ^This. The super rich have always been adept at fooling poor Republicans throughout time. Romney is not going to sympathize with the every day average joe. He is going to take away your rights more so than Obama ever will.

  17. James Holmes is an anti-gun person. This was staged at this time so that the Gun registration law (Gun tax & confiscation) that Hilary Clinton is signing will go through. James is getting exactly what he wants – scared people, gun confiscation, and his name in infamy. Boy the politicians LOVE him. And do not forget the media. It is sickening how they scramble to get the most gruesome and outrageous stories. These people are still in shock and they have microphones in their face.

  18. “Lousenberg”as Bob Grant used to call him,is and has been an enemy of gun owners from Day One.He needs to shuffle off to Buffalo,as they say.Stinkin’ old fart.

    • Agreed, but who cares? Doesn’t mean we should acquiesce to some idiot banning them.

I’ve seen the barrel of a C7 (halfway between an M-16A1 and an A2) turn bright red and then droop from too much firing using only standard 30 rd mags. Can’t see the efficacy of those Rube Goldberg devices.

  19. 1. No way is a Republican controlled House going to pass any gun control laws, to include hi-cap mag bans. Now the PDRC (Peoples Democratic Republic of California), MA, NY, and the like might at the state level. Here in Texas, we’re pretty safe.

    2. The reason you don’t see soldiers using those 100 round mags? They don’t work for crap. The magazine is the biggest single point of failure in the M4. Bent lips, bound springs, crooked follower, etc. Every failure to feed I’ve experienced with an M16/M4 was due to the magazine. The 20 or 30 round magazine is pretty simple. Two moving parts, a spring and a follower. Those 100 round mags have all kinds of moving parts and they fail like crazy. I watched a tacti-cool wannabe on the range last weekend completely disassemble and reassemble one three times before he asked if he could borrow a couple of my P-Mags. (Nope, he couldn’t.) In the Army we don’t let Soldiers use those monstrosities, even if they buy them on their own (like we all do with P-Mags.) If they worked Special Forces types would use them. Ever see a Special Forces type with one? ’nuff said.

    3. I don’t need one, but it is my right to own one, because the Constitution of the United States of America, ratified in 1791, says it is my God given right to own one.

    • So how much of a loss is it if the Beta Drum gets banned? I personally wouldn’t give a shit, because it is such a piece of shit. As long as they don’t ban Pmags I couldn’t care less.

  20. Lautenberg actually retired at one point and came back when Torricelli got caught in a scandal. He must be 100 years old by now. Eventually he’ll die and that will be the end of his rants.

  21. Having never seen a high capacity magazine in person and only in photos so I don’t know the scale, but it looks like one could easily carry four 30 round magazines (120 shots) is a bit less space. Besides, it doesn’t take that long to change a magazine. With a full auto gun it just gets reloaded more often.
Yes, let’s ban high capacity magazines so the next spree killer has to reload, instead of doing something that would allow the people to protect themselves.
Gee, I wonder what there is that allows people to use a gun for self-defense.
Seems like a no-brainer to me, although capitalizing on any tragedy brings in ratings for news and attention to politicians, as opposed to actually doing something.

    • Rule #1 for Trolls: Generalize all liberals as absolutely evil, out-to-get-conservatives types.

Think for yourself instead of spewing blanket generalizations and labels like “left” and “liberal.”

  22. @JohnDoe, that is absolutely true. It does not make a dime’s worth of difference if Romney or Obama get elected. Ever notice that Dems criticize Reps and vice versa, NOT because of a principled disagreement on the issues, but because that is what they do (They’re a Democrat/Republican/whatever so they must be bad.)

If you doubt there is no difference, look at the rate of increase in the national debt, starting with Reagan. Those of us old enough to have voted for Reagan (but didn’t) remember him threatening to shut down the federal government if the debt ceiling were not raised.

Those of us willing to think for ourselves asked, “What if the gov’t were shut down and no one noticed?”

    • I agree. Look at the 1992 election, where Clinton and Bush got together to eliminate Ross Perot.

Though without government, we’d fall into anarchy. Works well on a deserted island, not so much in urban hubs.

  23. I live in Michigan, and although, it’s a liberal state, we are fortunate enough to have more relax gun laws that California, Illinois, and other left-wing liberal states like Massachusetts. I’m so glad that I don’t live in California or Chicago; Liberals are violating the Constitution terribly in those places, and totally infringing on the 2nd amendment right to bear arms!!!
