“There needs to be some kind of accountability,” Moore said. “A lot of people breed them the wrong way. You have very harsh incidents of these dogs maiming children, maiming older folks and sometimes even turning on their owner.”
The criminal background check would be run by the county sheriff and sent to the Department of Insurance, which would be instructed under the proposal to deny a permit to anyone whose background check “is not suitable for the ownership of a dog belonging to an aggressive dog breed.”
“If you have a person who has acted irresponsibly in the past, and they have this type of animal, they – it’s a pattern that they would probably replicate,” Moore explained. “Then, the dog could be harmed or put someone else in a dangerous situation.”
The “aggressive dog permit” could cost as much as $25. The Department of Insurance could also add rules requiring additional risk insurance for the dogs.
The restrictions would take effect in January. Beginning in 2015, violators would be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor.

Yup 100% true. I have a German Shepard and a Rot. Both are extremely good around children, and generally submissive. The trick is to not beat them, harass them and get them exposure to people and other dogs when they are young, just generally treat them how you would want to be treated and they make great pets.
Yeah, what about Dobermans? In the 70’s and 80’s they were the high-profile dogs along with German Shepherds. Now, zilch.
But then why are Mastiffs on there? They were bred to knock people down, and stand/sit on them. Not maul them.. Can’t believe everything you see in the movies/TV shows.. contrary to popular belief, they are protectors, not attackers..

I have an English Mastiff. It is the gentlest thing on earth. It is the freaking nanny dog from Peter Pan. Every kid in the neighborhood loves him. These legislators must just be looking at the size of a mastiff and paying no attention to their demeanor.
I was surprised too. Mastiff meaning “English Mastiff”? Overwhelmingly calm dogs. Maybe they wanted to cover Neapolitan Mastiffs, Tibetan Mastiffs…maybe even bullmastiffs.
I call it “legimania”, and it bites harder than any Pit Bull. I don’t know all that much about Mastiffs, but I know Tibetan Mastiffs guard monasteries and the gold iconic statues – of which there are many, and gold paintings. They’re more than capable at for the job.
Oh, they’re all great guard dogs and without any training. But they don’t attack. They knock you down and stand or lay on you until the owner arrives. Happened to our nanny once when she popped by to feed the dog while we were on vacation. He was still a pup and didn’t know her yet. She handled it surprisingly well. Now her 12 year old girl feeds the dog when we’re away.

I had to give up my blue nose, Sweet Pea, in my split with the other half two years ago and there isn’t a day go by I don’t wish I could have brought that lovable potato-head with me. She was 72 pounds of nothing but love and sloppy kisses for everyone. God I miss her so much….

I own a Pitbull/Golden retriever mix I adopted a couple years ago. Not that he was aggressive to start with, but my family and I have made sure to train him well, to be comfortable around children and strangers. He’s my dad’s tow yard guard dog and only barks at people acting suspicious. When we take him back home and go out to walk him the neighbor’s kids run up to hug him. As with anything, responsibility falls on you alone.

I love my Presa Canario. She is the perfect balance between calm self-assured pet and destroy-the-threat protector. I take her to the nursing home to see my granddad, the kids in the neighborhood can approach her and she never so much as gets a hair out of place. But let her detect an unfamiliar sound in the night or a perceptible apprehension from me or the little woman and this dog goes from mild-mannered lovable oaf to Hound of the Baskerville’s in less than 1 second. 130 pounds of teeth and muscle will make even the toughest bad guy get in touch with his sense of self-preservation.

While it surely is true that with a “good” owner a Pit can make a good dog, I don’t believe it is a good thing to have a potential killer as a pet if the owner happens to be less than a “good” owner. Thing is, unlike a gun that only kills if made to by a human, pit bulls have killed hundreds of children and adults without any human involvement. They just escaped their yards. Just in the last week in my area an old man and his very small dog were attacked by four roaming pits and four adults were sent to the hospital by a single pit that terrorized a city block. I don’t agree with the story, I think that breeding this breed should be illegal. Yeah yeah, they make loving pets…..what breed can’t? But how many breeds actually kill?
Pit bulls can be more problematic than other breeds. Special care should be applied to raising them….and they probably should not be left with small children. It should be a free choice, however.

Have a German shepherd mix right now, my wife’s best friend has had two of the gentlest dogs I’ve ever met (Rottweilers), and yet both of my sister’s chihuahuas have been overly aggressive. Unfortunately “tuff guy’s” want “tuff dogs” and so they pick pitbulls and encourage them to be aggressive… it has nothing to do with their natural disposition.

A dog can and does act on it’s own..A gun cannot. A gun requires an owner or it’s completely harmless and worthless A gun is no better or worse than the person using it.
I can tell you from experience that a pit bull can no more help having a temper and being aggressive than a border collie can help it’s urge to herd other animals or a hound dog ignoring the sent of a raccoon.
Selective breeding does work. Pit bulls were bred for one reason and that reason and completely out of greed and cruelty and should no longer exist and there for this dog should be bred down/bred out of existence no one should have the need for a fighting dog.

Pit Bulls are mostly banned in Australia and the authorities introduces clever laws like ‘you can’t breed them if you own them and they must be neutered’…. End of breed really. Gun laws changed here years ago and has done nothing to reduce gun crime as the crime rates have skyrocketed since tough laws brought in. I have both a German Shepherd and what I think is a Shepherd/Lab mix. The GSD is the sweetest dog you’ll ever meet but I’ve met folks who are afraid of her because she’s a “cop dog” and “looks mean”. I also have neighbors w/Rotties & Pitts and in my experience are the most stable dogs I’ve ever met. True, a certain part of that will be down to good upbringing by their owners but what I’ve found is that working dogs in general tend to not be so unpredicatable. A while back I took my mom to a meet/greet w/some neighbors and she met a Rott, a Pitt, 2 Great Danes, a Rhodesian Ridgeback and slew of little yappy dogs and her comment when it was over… “the big “scary” dogs where the nicest of the bunch”

I have zero problems with “dog”control for the simple reason that predator animals are autonomous weapons that can go down the street and assault, maim, or kill your neighbor of its own volition–something a firearm cannot do.

Another common faulty logic statement as to why we should support and protect all gun laws but make it ok to ban certain types of dogs.
If you have an animal of ANY type (I have horses, dogs, cats, etc) you, the owner are 100% responsible for preventing them infringing on the rights of your neighbors and the community at large in any way.
If you cannot do that, then you should not have animals.
With dogs, specifically this means: you are in control of your dog physically, mentally and emotionally at ALL times. Just as with weapons where you are responsible for their handling at ALL times, dogs are precisely the same. They need to remain on your property, leashed or contained if necessary to prevent their escape, leashed and trained to walk in public and behave in a respectful manner to other pets and humans, and to tolerate children and strangers or be locked up and restrained if not.
There is ZERO difference between being a responsible gun owner and a responsible dog owner. Zero.

And it’s not the same thing as banning “assault” weapons but I liken it to recalling a weapon that has a defect that causes them to explode in your face on occasion. Maybe exploding in the neighbors kids face to be more accurate.
Big B, maybe the bad owners only pick these breeds because of the street cred or whatever standard they use. If these bad owners went for dogs with less of a rep maybe we would be seeing maulings from labs and poodles?

What I meant was a bad owner can make a bad dog, regardless of breed. The kind of guys that are training and handling the dogs in the maulings would get the same results regardless of breed.

Do you REALLY think after all of lying and obfuscation you see in the media about guns that the same media is reporting dog attacks 100% truthfully and covering those stories completely factually, with no bias and no subjectivity? Covering ALL stories including the ones where “scary breeds” of dogs are not involved? Accurately depicting what type of dog was involved?
That is a great example of very selective thinking to reinforce your already preconceived notions. Congratuations you have landed on the same plane as a gun grabber.
Funny how some people who tell us not to use a gun for protection, tell us to get a “guard dog” instead. Now, they’re trying to outlaw the ownership of certain breeds.
This is a perfect example of “mala prohibida”, that which is illegal, because the state says it is illegal.
As opposed to “mala in rem”, that which is inherently a crime. Rape, arson, murder (not justifiable homicide), and theft, are a few examples.
IMO there are three types of people in this world:
The “good people” who are for freedom and the right of citizens to live their lives without Government intervention. they believe in the good intentions and judgement and responsibility level of their fellow citizens and support their rights without question.
Then there are the “bad people” who want Government to be Mommy and take care of everything for them, including instituting prior restraint laws and limitations in a vain effort to make the world safe for everyone equally. Generally I find them both ignorant on the topics they involve themselves and stupid as compared to the average intelligence person. So you can almost forgive them – they are just too dumb to understand how they are wrong.
Then there are the “worst people” – the folks who want “freedom and liberty for me when it’s something I understand, care about and support” and “restrictions and regulations for you when it’s something I don’t”. Hypocrites. Intentionally and wantonly ignorant which makes them stupid to the 9th degree.

First, They try to take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens Now they are trying to tell individuals what breed of dog they can own or not own . I am a Animal Behaviorist -Professional dog trainer, and ignorance in our country is running ramped.Dogs aggression for the most part is a by product of the ignorance of the owner, not necessarily is Breed specific! Soon the so called powers to be will be dictating what FOODS we eat,What cars we can drive, and try to totally control the American people. We the American People need to ask ourselves What is wrong with this Picture!
