Gallup released a story last week noting that 23% of Americans viewed illegal immigration as the nation’s biggest problem. Meanwhile, barely 1% of Americans mentioned “gun violence” or gun control as among our biggest national problems.

Here’s Gallup’s news release going into the weekend, released on Friday where it got minimal publicity.

New High in U.S. Say Immigration Most Important Problem

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Americans’ concern with immigration continues to be heightened, as 23% name it the most important problem facing the country. This is by one percentage point the highest Gallup has ever measured for the issue since it first began recording mentions of immigration in 1993.

Buried in the story under the breakdown of Gallup’s polling results: Gun control registered among barely 1% of respondents in June, just as it has each and every month thus far in 2019. One percent – and they round up .5% as 1%!

Clearly, these people who think gun control is the most important problem facing our country today must be somewhere out on the fringes of our society. In fact, six times as many folks pointed to crime and the criminal justice system failures – not guns – as our biggest problem.

Just how fringe is that 1% who are demanding gun control? Well, 6% of Americans think the Pentagon was damaged by a military cruise missile on September 11, 2001, not a jumbo jet. And 5-6% of Americans believe the moon landing was faked.

So, should it surprise anyone that a rally by a fringe presidential candidate in front of NRA headquarters calling for vast expansions in our gun control laws could only muster 18 supporters? Not really.

Not only is Swalwell polling at zero percent in Iowa, but somehow the media still treats his campaign as viable. Go figure.

Ditto for the campaigns of other gun control one(ish)-trick ponies including Kirsten Gillibrand and Bill DeBlasio, along with Cory Booker, John Hickenlooper, Julian Castro, and Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke.

In fact, if you add up the support for all of the above, they still don’t equal the 6% of Democrats who opted for “none of the above” to the twenty-three — count ’em — Dems currently running for the party’s nomination.

  1. Isn’t this also bad news for us gun nuts?

    Personally, I don’t pretend guns/gun control is the most important issue before us, but I am quite convinced it is the most informative issue to gage our leadership by. A strong, undiluted belief in gun rights speaks to a visceral respect for individual liberty as well as faith in our fellow man. America simply cannot function without these crucial foundations.

    • Maybe, maybe not. While guns may be a minor issue for gun owners and anti-gun owners alike, it’s highly possible that the scales could tilt in favor of pro-2A through the annoyance factor. Even though it’s not top priority, all this anti-gun push still registers like a burr under the saddle and gives us just one more reason to reject the Democrats in general, even if it is not specifically for anti-gun crap. The benefit is not reversible– the anti-gunners will vote D no matter what, so all the bullshit does nothing to enhance the D position. It only erodes it.

  2. The biggest threat to the 2ndA, and the rest is the so-called education system. The education of our nations youth has been in the hands of commies since the 1960’s.
    If you are a parent, and believe in the Constitution and bill of rights, you should demand civics be mandatory in K-12. The constitution can not live on unless it is TAUGHT. Do it at home if necessary. A copy of the constitution and bill of rights, along with a copy of the Federalist papers, is all that is needed. Pretty cheap to keep America free.

      Hillsdale College is a great option for a REAL college. They have a bunch of free online courses (this is their outreach mission). Hillsdale is a great institution. ONLY college in the US that doesn’t take $ from the fed govt. My kids all headed for STEM (real) degrees so not the place for them but if you kid is looking for a classical “liberal” arts degree (vs a new age liberal BS degree) Hillsdale would a great destination,

      • When I went to high school (mid-1970’s), we considered anything put forth by the educational system as suspected propaganda.

        The Federal Government was the huge military industrial complex and (as George Carlin used to say) the two middle letters in the word industry are US.

        If I were to choose a college today, it would be Hillsdale.

        • I graduated in 1969 and already knew we were being fed crap. Even in a very rural town in northern Minn. My senior class was 15 people. Our social studies and American history classes were taught by a Jordanian, from the Israeli conquered West Bank.
          The man was very pro USA (I know, hard to believe) and gave us a view of the world not seen in most schools. He also was Oxford educated, not US.

          It took me several years out in the real world to figure out everything they taught me in college was crap.

          Now I just raise my own food and try not to think about all that wasted time.

  3. Yes there are bigger problems then gunm control. However gunm control is a big problem. Efficient muzzle brakes help, but nothing beats a good trigger. Here lately the triggers on these new rifles ain’t been so whoopee. And that’s what happens when lawyers win lawsuits.. No more hot coffee from Mickey D’s, no more break like glass triggers from Winchester.

    • In 1980 measles killed 2.6 million people. Thanks to the vaccine that’s been reduced to 73,000 as of 2014, but now they’re on the way back up. While I agree that nobody should be compelled by the government to put anything in their body that they don’t want, you should really study up on the diseases the vaccines prevent. Measles is still a huge killer, and the one study that linked the vaccine to autism has been thoroughly debunked.

          Would you similarly oppose quarantine laws, like we used to have before vaccines, but hardly ever see anymore? We simply don’t see those because we are so much cleaner now, right? Wal-Mart grocery carts are the proof, after all, lol.

        • Quarantine works, and works well. It is historically documented quarantine stopped smallpox, the smallpox vaccine killed more people than than the disease itself. Antibiotics are a non-sequitur in this discussion.

They live in unclean disease ridden environments and the constant liquid bowel movements dehydrates them and robs their body of nourishment it needs to build an immune system. So yes, vaccines and modern technology with even something as simple as washing their hands and ways to eat clean instead of using the same pond they dump shit water in could stop those 3rd world countries you are referring to from dying of diarrhea.         • gov., looked at your links, the first is a mystery, maybe you can explain its relevance to this conversation? The next 2 links state the science has not been done to determine vaccine safety. Maybe you didn’t read the papers and the authors conclusions? Funny stuff when someone posts something that actually supports the opposing argument. I’ll check back for last 2, cant wait to see what they say.

        • ‘Quarantine works…’ – Absolutely. As I said above, I don’t believe anybody should be compelled by the state to put something they don’t want in their veins. However, the flip side is that the government is charged with public safety, so if you or your kid gets exposed to the measles then the government can and should force you into quarantine, which is essentially temporary incarceration. If you’re willing to comply you should have every right to decline a vaccine for yourself and your children.

          ‘…even middle schools and high schools don’t accept wikipedia as references…’ – Maybe I missed something here but I can’t find a single source you’ve produced to back your claims, so I’d say a fully source cited article in Wikipedia is a lot more reliable than the rantings of some guy in the comment section of a blog site.

        • The thing I don’t get Pg, is you seem less interested in proselytizing than just convincing everyone you’re a cook. You have to accept that your opinion is a fringe one and that people will at least initially be skeptical. And I can sympathize personally because a lot of people disagree with my pro anthropogenic global warming stance. But when people express their opposing points of view, instead of explaining why they are mistaken you berate them. All the while never producing a shred of evidence that you’re right and everyone else is wrong.

          And BTW, I’m probably about the closest thing you have to an ally around here on this one, because I at least agree on individual liberty terms that you shouldn’t be compelled by the government to be vaccinated or to have your children vaccinated. Even if you are a cook.

      Ever traveled to a foreign country? Or even to somewhere off the continent?

      Getting vaccinated before you travel is a very good idea that could save thousands of dollars in medical bills.

      One of my employers sent me to Indonesia for a task at a mine site. Not only was I required to have a special region specific set of vaccinations but the company also paid for them.

      An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.

    • The only reason vaccine laws are here is because there’s thousands of diseased people coming across the border. A bunch of un-vaccinated people was never a problem until a bunch of un-vaccinated people with measles, lice, fleas, TB, scabies came to town. Yuma sector of of the Border Patrol spent $700,000 on medical care for 1,700 migrants who were sent to hospitals. Children have diseases not seen in modern American society.   8. Governor we’ve had 1000 reported cases this year alone…how many deaths? Even before the vaccine program the measles death rate was somewhere between 1/10,000 and 1/500,000. How many MMR vaccine deaths reported to VAERS in the last 10 years?

  10. The problem is that we live in the media age, which allows that 1% to solely focus on those stories and articles pertaining to their beliefs, and that is why they do what they do. It’s like the women’s march when trump got elected. Sure, thousands of feminists showed up to block traffic and annoy people who live there, but hundreds of millions continued their daily life and did not support them. The media prints a story, and the simple minded then see that 1% as a majority.

I was to young to know much, but I remember it being the biggest thing in the news EVER, (as seen from a young kids eyes) Years later, I asked someone who was there, who said: “I don’t know, I was in class or at the library like most of us”.
