“‘What we have here is a workplace violence issue,’ (Chicago Police Superintendent Gary) McCarthy told reporters. ‘Apparently there’s a technological company on the 17th floor. They’ve been undergoing a downsizing. They’ve demoted a number of people.'” Initial reports are, as always, sketchy, but the un-named shooter McCarthy was talking about apparently wasn’t a raving Muslim lunatic like Nidal Hasan who committed his own “workplace violence” at Fort Hood. Instead, according to nbcchicago.com, the would-be killer in this case, who had recently been demoted by a company called ArrowStream, shot CEO Steven LaVoie twice during a meeting in the company’s offices before killing himself. LaVoie is reported to be in critical condition with wounds to his stomach and head. Supt. McCarthy told reporters that “there was plenty of security in the building,” but didn’t elaborate on how the incident might affect his stance on Chicagoans exercising their right to armed self defense. Imagine that.

  1. No Muslim ties. . .yet, but with the shrinking ice-caps causing a rise in false reporting on the acceptance of gay marriage… there’s bound to be a Muslim ascot or scarf in there somewhere.

  2. This is a made up story as you all know no one except 2 people have guns in Chicago.

Plenty of security huh? How many were armed??

    • I think what he *meant* to say, was “there was plenty of security theater”… There… Fixed that for him….

  3. Yeah this was on all morning in i. Chicago. It interrupted Emily Miller on the View so I don’t know what happened. Amazing how ordinary it all was too. They get excited when the financial district is threatened. Almost a ho-hum murder-suicide.

  4. I apparently walked right past this building shortly after the shooting occurred. I learned about the shooting when I got back to the office. I’ll circle back after work to see if the building has the magical no guns permitted inside sign.

    • That’s it!!! They should havbe more “No guns permitted” signs there.
And some more hurdles for legal owners.
and more taxes to pay for the police force
and Bloomie and Sharon shold have viisted this poor, depressed peson to offer moral support

      /sarcasm

McCarthy just did the CCW’ers a big favor; he’s admitted that his “security” plan doesn’t work and he’s pursuing a known not-working policy and infringing on Chicagoans’ rights for no good reason.

  6. McCarthy called this incident “workplace violence” and said it was caused by downsizing. When it’s a couple of gang-bangers, then he calls it “gun violence” and says it’s caused by guns.

    Which is it, Garry?

  7. Well, if I lived in Chicago, I’d shoot myself. But I wouldn’t shoot my ex-boss. That would be excessive.

  8. When I hear of things like this, when some workplace peasant wreaks violent revenge on the Superior Being (CEO, in this case) that either fired him, or laid him off, or ‘downsized’ him, or demoted and thus shamed him, my little lizard brain quietly and with great glee celebrates the small victory. Of course, I am immediately ashamed. No, really. Maybe this guy really DESERVED to be demoted while the CEO kept his cushy job and perks. Absolutely.

Perhaps the NEXT time some ‘superior being’ tramples on a little guy, and robs him of his livelihood, his future, and his dignity, he’ll think twice after hearing this. But it’s not likely; ‘Superior Beings’ like supervisors and managers and CEOs and HR people who are secure in their OWN jobs, or so they believe, have no qualms about stomping on underlings when it’s ‘just business.’ They think that it’s OK to dismiss someone, sometimes without good cause, and take away a part of their life, all the while expecting no repercussions. Well, SURPRISE! Every once in awhile, there’s one they tread upon that doesn’t sit back and take it like a good little ant.

OK, I’m really sorry I think like that. No, really.

    • Actually my train of thought was running in that direction too.

While I don’t identify with the Occupy crowd very much, I have even less empathy for the vast majority of MBA-toting buzzword-spouting corporate homonculi that largely exist to collect an exorbitant salary, suck up to the shareholders they are often actively fleecing and treat anyone under them like dirt.

      • Does it make any difference to you to know that the CEO was also the company founder who gave this guy a job in the first place? And that a lot of people were being laid off, and not just demoted to save money?

        • Some. The first person to go should always be the CEO if the company’s in trouble, not the workers. If he’d done his job, things would’ve been better for all. However, he didn’t, or doesn’t, deserve to die for it. No matter if he treated his shooter evilly or no, what happened to him was morally wrong.

As I said, though, it’s my evil little lizard brain that thinks those other thoughts, not my noble full-sized and morally upright human one. That would explain the guilt; My lizard brain has none.

  9. Well, it was only a “workplace violence” incident, so it doesn’t count. Sort of like “__ days since the last workplace accident.” So nothing to see here – move along.

  10. Update: Chicago is establishing a Task Force to investigate how to restrict shootings to the neighborhoods where they typically happen and keep them from bleeding into the area’s where the affluent and young educated professionals work and live. Although no details were given the source said to expect more laws restricting firearms. The source is quoted as saying “We expect and unofficially sanction recreational murder in some specific areas. The focus would be on safeguarding citizens that provide value to Chicago.”

  11. Saw this as a “breaking news alert” before I left the house this morning.

First thing I thought: “didnt 80-something people get shot recently, in ‘Chiraq’?”

Only makes the news when its white people?
