As one might expect, the city, county, and state of New York aren’t very friendly to firearms. So when the Ares SCR was unleashed, the initial response was a resounding “nope.” Some people tried to register the firearm within the city of New York (which requires registration of all firearms) only to be told that the gun was actually an “evil assault weapon” because it can accept M16 magazines. Nevermind that nowhere in the law does it state anything whatsoever about that being a defining feature of an “assault rifle,” the cops were happy to make it up as they went along. That is, until a couple days ago when it appears that a legal dope-smack was applied and the cops started approving the applications . . .

Reports are coming in from AR15.com that things are now going smoothly for those who want a modern semi-auto firearm yet also want to live in New York City. From the OP:

Just got official word that the Ares SCR is now legal in NYC…as it should have been from the start.

I was asked not to plaster it all over the internet…but it’s not like it should be a secret.

Now we’ll see how long it takes them to ban it arbitrarily by name based on no set legal standard…in which case I’d like to get the NYSRPA, NRA, SAF and SCOPE involved.

But here we are.

Funny thing is, I don’t even plan on buying one anyway…can’t really afford it right now…but I am glad I got it approved for the rest of my NYC gun owners.

Good news all around, then.

  1. If the entry price were lower, I’d buy one and I live in a state with no such laws or regulations! They look fun.

  2. NY residents should be spending their money on relocation from that god forsaken region rather than buying that. Seriously that whole region is worthless, 6 figure corporate jobs that offer nothing to the actual industry of America. if you cut off the upper east coast we would be affected ZERO. They offer no agriculture, they’ve forced all industry to move, they’re just a bunch of paper pushers.

Move, buy a real AR, and enjoy some freedom!

    • I actually kind of like the idea of an AR type rifle in that form. If they had better triggers or just good replacement options I’d consider one, or a lower/bolt package.

      • Agreed, I love the look. I feel the same way about the sporter configuration Saiga rifles, there’s just something about the traditional stock layout that catches my eye.

        • AND the sporter layout does not catch the eyes of people who are are anti AR15 just because, well, then can recognize the silhouette.

    • I live in Western NY, and as a resident of the State, NOT the city, I hate NYC. I would love nothing more than to see the area that I live in secede from the rest of the state. However, I am also not blind to the fact that there would be a downside.

The remainder of the state does financially support the city with state taxes… I would love to keep that money local, but I firmly believe if that money was cut off from the city the effects would hit the entire country. People wouldn’t be able to afford to live there anymore for one, as taxes there would have to skyrocket to offset the loss. The problem there is that people would leave, and it would have drastic long term effects on the stock exchange, which is obviously a huge player in the domestic economy. I believe if that were the case you’d be feeling the effects nationwide, and suddenly the dollar would be worth about 1:1 in Yen.

Granted, I’m obviously no economist, I don’t follow the stock market at all, and this is all just uneducated speculation… but at the very least, that’s my $.02, while it’s still worth $.02.

      • ” People wouldn’t be able to afford to live there anymore for one, as taxes there would have to skyrocket to offset the loss.”

Or perhaps money could stop being thrown away if it were to be in shorter supply.

      • Another Western NYer here…
Respectfully, I think you’re generally mistaken.

        A) NY City’s financial hub generates a great deal of revenue for NY State government. This is redistributed to Western NY. Most areas of Western NY get MORE back from NY State than they send in tax revenue.

        B) HOWEVER, NY State laws and mandates make its local governments hyper expen$$$ive. So, severing Western NY from Albany would cut both revenue AND costs for localities.

        C) A NY State minus the NY City area would be more friendly to manufacturing and FRACKING for oil and gas. It’s private economy may grow instead of languishing like America’s Province of East Germany…

That all said, I think I’ll be relocating to the free state of New Hampshire within a year.

    • Guess you never heard of NJ being the garden state, or the vineyards of NY’s Finger Lake region. Maybe you want to get out more, your view of the north east seems to be limited to what appears on The Soprano’s, Real Housewives of NJ, etc

    • Ahem….

ME, NH and VT (and quite a bit of Up-State NY) would like to have a word with you. ‘Word’ meaning ‘nail-studded clue-by-four’.

  3. “I was asked not to plaster it all over the internet…but it’s not like it should be a secret.”

Steven Quincy Urkel – “Did I dooo thaaat?”

  4. If they brilliantly ban it by name, we should have a running test. Can the manufacturer change the name faster, or can the state ban new names quicker? I bet after the state has banned the same rifle by 5-600 different names, they might start to think it was getting silly! The manufacturer, OTOH, could send them a list of the next 3000 names they will have to ban, and announce that another 3000 will arrive in next weeks mail.

    • Nope. My bet is, they’ll add detachable magazines as a “feature,” ban it, done.

In fact I’m not sure why they didn’t just do this in the first place. It would have been a lot simpler.

      • It already is. Not sure why the article didn’t mention that. However, you are allowed to have the detachable magazines if your gun is non-evil in every other way. Hence the fugly replacement for an AR we have here.

    • We need to ban this gun, because guns are icky and black rifles are ickier… or something, something for the children, common sense something.

        • Then it would be “something, something misogyny, something, patriarchy.” Only wood stocks on single-shot rifles and shotguns are acceptable… mostly… sometimes… for now; kinda. =)

  5. I have a few friends who are gun owners and who live in NYC I think that they have some sort of masochistic affinity for dealing with the government. I mean, NY state (and CT for that matter) are bad, but NYC is a whole ‘nother level of awful.

  6. What does history tell us concerning how many politicians need to be shot to make a drastic policy change?

I wonder if Hitler would of been shot/killed before he got to powerful, what would of been.

  7. Don’t forget whatever the cost of the Ares, you have to tack on 250 dollars for filing and fingerprint fee to get the long gun license. NYC is just sooo gun friendly….

  8. I left NYC in 1989 when you had to register rifles and shotguns.
I moved into Ulster County. Had no issues there at all. Still had to register all guns though and wait 30 days to add a new gun to my permit. I could live with that.
    Left altogether in 2000.
I don’t miss anything about NY except for the Catskills.
    Love living in the mountains.
NY screwed itself. It got what it deserves.
The rest of the state doesn’t deserve to live under NYC thumb. They should NYers kick out NYC.
Unfortunately the rest of the state doesn’t have the votes NYC has……………………..OOOOOh well.

    • I loved the Catskills. I used to go up and ski at Hunter and Windham when I was young. Summer vacations on the rivers and lakes up there. Upstate NY is a beautiful place that most people wouldn’t associate with NY. It’s too bad the people up there have to live under the rule of NYC and Albany.

  9. New York state, every county north of Rockland and Westchester should secede and ask to be annexed by Vermont. The new New York state could then make its new capital be White Plains. The Vermont government could then sweep in and clean out the corruption in Albany. It would be a fitting final victory for the Green Mountain Boys. I’d think the overall character of both states would then be better defined.

  10. Why on earth would anyone buy that. I live in ca and I would love to own an AK and an AR. I have the money, time, and ability to buy neutered ca versions of those rifles but I will never buy them. If it aint the real deal, don’t wast time or money pretending to enjoy freedom. Buy three SKS’s instead of these jokes of a rifle.

  11. No agriculture in NY ? lol it’s a five billion dollar a year industry here. Number two,in apples in the country , corn , soy beans , whole counties of wineries and on and on.

NYC is a tiny dot in a remote corner of the state ……

  12. The whole “assault weapon” ban is stupid anyway. How does a collapsible stock and a flash suppressor make a gun any more effective as a weapon? but those are some of the standards that were applied by the Liberals and the fools who voted for them.

  13. I spent the first 35 years of life in the Hudson valley of NY. I left 15 years ago because it was just to expensive to live there and get ahead. I will say though, it is a very pretty place once you get away from the city. Most people who’ve never visited upstate would be shocked by it’s beauty. Shame the city and all the liberals ruin the state. Living in NC, it worries me that all the crazy liberals coming here from the north will have a negative impact on the state. It’s like a disease.

  14. You know it’s bad when you live in the USA with the second amendment and yet we in Canada still have an easier time despite no government recognition of the right to bear arms. I have several short barreled shotguns (like 12.5 inxh barrels) and a tactical m1a (among others) all unregistered and legal.
