The Associated Press is not a friend of ours. John “More Guns, Less Crime” Lott exposed their anti-gun animus in his 2003 opus The Bias Against Guns. The news service has dialed it back in the last decade or so — as numerous firearms-related factual errors have been exposed. But here’s another one . . .

In a story about Constitutional or “permitless” carry moving through the New Hampshire legislative process — headlined Gov. Sununu Likely to Sign Concealed Carry Bill at nbcboston.com— the AP wrote that “The National Rifle Association says concealed carry is legal in 11 states, including Maine and Vermont.”

The problem: the AP left out an important qualifier. That is “permitless.” Permitless concealed carry is legal in 11 states, including Maine and Vermont.

To be clear, concealed carry is allowed in all 50 states. Thirty-one states are “shall issue”; concealed carry permits must be issued if an applicant isn’t a felon or otherwise prohibited. Eleven states are “permitless” or Constitutional carry; no permit is required to carry a firearm openly or concealed.

Eight states are “may issue.” A governmental authority has the power to issue or not issue permits, according to the authority’s definition of the applicant’s “need” to carry. Several states have such a high bar that they are virtual no-issue states, such as Hawaii, New Jersey and Maryland.

The Associated Press was once considered a reliable news source. Yet when it comes to guns, they often get simple facts wrong. Facts about guns they could easily Google. It will be interesting to see if they correct this one.

  1. Technically Wyoming and Idaho are only constitutional carry for residents of those states. A shame really as the rights of fellow countrymen visiting these states are thoroughly denied. Unless they possess a recognized carry permit or carry openly, such folk are out of luck.

      • Sentiments are recognized and empathized with, however, there are many honorable 2A proponents isolated within the inane confines of such states.

United we stand, divided we fall, brothers and sisters.

        • Yep, anyone who would WANT to carry a gun in those states is probably not in line with the rest of California or New York. Actually from what I understand, anyone who isn’t from New York City isn’t in line with New York’s government.

      • Right, because the people living in the “red” areas of those states (inland in California and the entire state of NY outside of NYC) aren’t part of America. [/sarc]

Sad to see there are people of the gun that are just as silly and ignorant as the liberals they condemn.

      • I spent 21+ years defending the rights of ALL American citizens, including yours. For what? To listen to your insults against me and all the good people who live in California and who continue to fight against the tyranny of the progressives.

You have also insulted a great many veterans who served this nation and the Constitution through many wars who happen to be citizens of the states you identify. Those who have died and those who continue to live here. Many of our families have been here for generations. My 91 year old father still lives on the last of an original land grant which existed before the California Gold Rush. He served in WW2 and Korea, as his father served in WW1, and I served in Vietnam. Each of us who have served took an oath to “protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic”, and for us there is no expiration date on that oath. We still do by our votes.

Perhaps the next time you think about insulting people you do not know, you might consider that we fight on, and, if nothing else, by doing so, we slow the advance of this tyranny just a little bit to give others time to fight on. You might consider that we are all supposed to be in this fight together and that insulting those who support the cause does not help. You might also consider all the money we donate to the cause.

So, how about keeping your insults to yourself and use your words for something constructive. I don’t know anyone here who goes around insulting people from states like NY, CT, MA, etc. We know that there are good people in every state and if they did not exist, far more states might have fallen to the progressives.

      • That’s not fair I’m a pro gun New Yorker. I had to move to Florida to actually buy anything, but New York was where all the gun manufacturers used to be, CT as well. It’s a shame that the Democrats have taken over. Things are starting to change though.

      • I doubt you’ll find one, as law-abiding folks usually don’t push the envelope.

And even if a person is relatively sure they’ll win, there’s probably still a bit of apprehension (Ha!) about the initial contact/arrest/confinement. As the saying goes, “You may beat the rap, but you can’t beat the ride.” What law-abiding citizen wants to spend ANY amount of time in jail, perhaps locked-up with a selection of vicious scumbags?

        • “I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W’s where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after committin’ your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean ‘n’ ugly ‘n’ nasty ‘n’ horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me and said, ‘Kid, whad’ya get?’ I said, ‘I didn’t get nothing, I had to pay $50 and pick up the garbage.’ He said, ‘What were you arrested for, kid?’ And I said, ‘Litterin” – Arlo Guthre, “Alice’s Restaurant”

      • Dean, first and foremost thank you for the ubiquitous attention given to the second ammendment and citizens rights.

Former Uinta county state representative Allen Jaggi was one of the original house sponsors of the 2011 Wyoming carry bill. He once relayed to this poster that the resident only provision was a compromise to get the bill out of comittee, through the house/senate and signed by Governor Mead. This was understandable at the time, however there have been concerns that an ignorant out of stater might fall prey to overzealous law enforcement efforts while exercising what they believe to be their lawful right.

This poster is not aware of any arrests or convictions for violatations of the residents only cause, at least in Wyoming. However, the potential is still there.

It is the belief of this humble poster that such a provision need be obviated, as it is one of the few things that keeps these states from truly being paragons of 2nd Ammendment rights.

  2. When I look at news reports about firearms I often wonder if it’s intentional misreporting. But then I hear these idiots talk about guns on TV and it becomes clear that they have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about.

Some of it is anti-gun propaganda for sure but some of it is outright ignorance combined with arrogance and at least a healthy dash of stupidity.

  3. I was just thinking at the map needs to be updated for HI, NJ, and MD to a red/yellow hash. They may in law be may issue but are in effect no issue and that needs to be called out.

  4. And in missouri open carry is more restrictive and in a lot of towns limited to permit holder only

  5. “The Associated Press was once considered a reliable news source. Yet when it comes to guns, they often get simple facts wrong.”

Yes. And their reporting of the Bowling Green Massacre was pretty biased too.

Face it, you all are gonna believe what makes you feel good, and then get yer panties in a twist when something is just a tiny bit imprecise in its wording.

    • Concealed carry is legal in EVERY state, but the AP saying it’s legal in only 11 states is “just a tiny bit imprecise”? Mr. Pot, there’s a kettle over here you should meet.

    • Yep, DaveR. You said it when you said “you all”. You don’t see people that think and believe like us as one of you. When it’s a Republican, Bush was a “war monger”when he ordered military action in the mid-east, and he was attacked mercilessly in the press. When it was Obama ordering military action in the mid-east, what did we hear from that same press?…..crickets.

The same way when Obama made travel bans of the many of the same mid-eastern primarily Muslim countries that Trump now is doing, not one word from the left or the press or the courts, but now that Trump as a Republican wants to pass pretty much the same temporary travel ban, the leftists go absolutely insane!

What Trump is really showing for all of to see, is that we as a country, as a people, are at very much the same place as the difference between the north and south before our civil war. It is the difference between those that think people are chattel, slaves of the state, and those that believe that all people regardless of race, religion, gender or creed deserve all the rights that free people are born with.

And once again, as then, it is primarily conservatives in the Republican party that defends individual liberty and freedom, and it is the Democrats that wish to enslave us all.

Hopefully we will decide this without the same blood shed as our first civil war, but with so much of our society currently controlled by the tyrants of the left, and with so many RINO’s in the Republican party, it will be a toss up.

  6. In many places, carry laws are complicated by design, so I’m not too surprised that the AP can’t keep it straight.

During the presidential campaign I also read that 90+% of the press consider themselves “liberal” or “leans liberal”.

I can’t remember if it was Jeff Foxworthy or Larry the Cable Guy who said it but in either case “There’s your problem right there!”

  7. When was AP a valid news service? All these “news” outlets are owned by the same several corporations, none are gun friendly, more importantly none are individual Liberty friendly.

  8. He was not joking about “the ride”. If you get LE angry enough at you, they can just put you on late buses and give you a tour of the system in LA county. You might not even get to eat for 36 hrs or so. I know a lady whose husband was into some bad stuff, she claimed she didn’t know. She got her bail and then the judge redacted and added $500 to it. She then got “the tour”. The bail bondsman was showing up at her destination, but there “wouldn’t be enough room for her” and they would not let her into that facility. I hope that now that we got rid of that scumbag Sheriff, things will be better.
