One man was killed and three police officers injured after a woman was taken hostage by an apparently pro-ISIS attacker at an apartment complex in the beachside community of Brighton, South Australia last night. The suspect was subsequently put down by police who ended the incident.
The attack began around 4:00pm local time and the woman was held hostage for approximately two hours after police arrived on the scene. During that time the attacker — who was apparently known to counter-terrorism authorities, BNO News reports — called in to the news room of 7News Melbourne saying, “This is for IS, this is for al-Qaeda,” as the hostage could be heard screaming in the background. Police began an operation to save the victim around 6:00pm, when gunfire was heard in the building.
“A man has been shot dead by police in the Bay Street apartment complex,” Victoria Police said in a brief, emailed statement. “Police have safely rescued a woman who was being held against her will in the apartment block,” according to BNO News.
The police also found an unidentified man dead of a gunshot wound when they entered the apartment complex.
Authorities are currently “investigating whether the incident is terror-related and counter-terror investigators were on the scene last night,” reports the Sydney Morning Herald. They are also investigating the relationship between the attacker and the as yet-unidentified female hostage, “who is aged between 20 and 30.”
Yet another attack on Westerners inspired by militant Islam? A lover’s quarrel that turned violent? Some combination of the two? In any event, the attacker does indeed appear to be a loser in every sense of the word.
Coincidentally, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis was in Australia yesterday and made these comments concerning the Islam-inspired attacks in London this weekend, but which may have added relevance for Australians today:

Well, we don’t scare. And so we’re here to work together in a manner that protects the freedom and the values that we share together and we’re committed to passing those freedoms onto the next generation intact.
Fyi, Victoria and South Australia are two different states. I suspect this was actually in Victoria given that the Victoria police commented,and I know Brighton is a suburb in Victoria. It is a southern state in Australia though.
Brighton is also a suburb in South Australia but it was the Victorian one in this incident.

It just goes to show, no matter how many laws you pass, or agencies you create, scum will still slip through the system because a human will be unwilling to or plain fail to do their job and people will die. “…was known to authorities…” but due to political correctness it would cause caterwauling mayhem in the streets if an “innocent” is arrested. A jihadi is not a jihadi until after an act of jihad is committed.
One cannot have “caterwauling mayhem” why, imagine the crying circles that would spring up at our US liberal Universities.
A person isn’t a thief until he steals something, nor an assailant until he assaults somebody. Is that also “political correctness”?
It’s weird how people seem to find evidentiary standards for search and seizure to be so alien.
My thoughts run this direction, too.
To those who say, “…was known to authorities…” is enough to take said person out of circulation, I ask, “On what charge, exactly?”
If thinking something bad is a crime, surely we would all be in jail.
The justice systems of the Western World works on actions, not thoughts. If those thoughts even take the form of words, there are laws that criminalize spoken threats. The person making those threats can be arrested and charged.
But simply belonging to a mosque is still not a crime; even expressing sympathy for a terrorist group is allowed, because it does not, by itself, threaten anyone. This is where the “…was known to authorities…” comes from; they know of the person’s thoughts, bu they are still legal.
God help us all if the day comes when thoughts are made illegal.
That’s pretty much my point. We don’t have a Department of Pre-Crime that can figure out who is a Jihadi before committing Jihad. Because of this, Jihadis are free to use our liberty against us. I’m concerned that one day it may get bad enough that it comes down to using law of war rather than criminal law. Or, we become a much more oppressive surveillance state than England already is now.
If we were having a discussion and planning on overthrowing the govt, we would be committing SEDITION.

Time has come to suspend rights of known jihadists. Sort it out later.
There is a simple solution. If they are known to the police, deport them. Immediately. And all their family. It doesn’t matter if the family is innocent; in fact it is better if they are. People who want to live in peace in a new land and who fear deportation if a family member engages in terrorist activities will not hesitate to cull the rotten fruit themselves. No more Mr. Nice Guy.
Deportation is certainly more palatable than the alternative.

Lots of Australians, myself included own and use firearms. This sounds more like the ex boyfriend not being able to handle being the ex than terrorism. But I’m not local to Adelaide and am going on friends opinions.

They are lying…all one has to do is look up Australia major crimes on wikipedia…and you see all the gun crimes and shootings that would have been mass shootings…if the gunman had shot and killed more people. Can the anti-gunners tell us which Australian gun control law kept this guy, on the radar of anti-terror police and a criminal on parole, from committing a mass public shooting…since he already had an illegal gun…..?
