“I have said for some time that this city has a gun problem and that guns are far too readily available for far too many people. This is an international problem and this is a domestic problem. There are far too many people carrying around guns in our city and our region who should not have them.

“You’ve heard me ask the question of why anybody would need to buy 10 or 20 guns, which they can lawfully do under the present laws. And that leads to another question we need to discuss: Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?” – Toronto Mayor John Tory in Toronto mayor calls for gun control in wake of deadly shooting [via thehill.com]

  1. Well, clearly they need guns because the government can’t keep whackjobs like that nut off the street.

  2. ‘There are far too many people carrying around guns in our city and our region who should not have them.’

‘Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?’

People should really stop and think about what they’re saying before they open their mouths. They’ll look a lot smarter.

    • Who else is going to give lucrative government contracts to politically connected companies and ensure that unions maintain dominance? Without government, those people would all be forced to work for a living. What are you, a monster?

  3. So it was a “crazy Muslim” as opposed to the crazy Muslim who iinvaded the Canadian legislature with a lever gun a couple of years ago, and killed a guard????

  4. A man lays waste to a neighborhood, attacking innocent, defenseless people at random for several minutes before police can stop him, and you want to know why anybody in the city needs a gun?

  5. “You’ve heard me ask the question of why anybody would need to buy 10 or 20 guns … . And that leads to another question we need to discuss: Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?” – Toronto Mayor John Tory

Pardon me while I thoroughly fisk the Mayor’s comment.

Why anybody would buy 10 or 20 guns is none of Mayor Tory’s business — any more so than why anybody would buy 10 or 20 umbrellas or cocktail dresses.

Furthermore, it is patently obscene and grossly demeaning for the Mayor to demand that a person explain a “need” in order to purchase, own, or possess something.

Finally, Toronto’s violent crime rate is greater than ZERO and the victims of such crimes were/are often unable to defend themselves with their bare hands and feet: THAT is why someone would “need” to carry a firearm on their person.

    • You’re thinking like an American and a free man. Canadians are subjects and their “freedoms” are benevolently handed down to them from their masters. Their masters demand satisfaction to their inquiries: why does one need a gun? The thing is the inquiry is rhetorical, and satisfaction will only come with confiscation, when self delusional “free men” are put back in their place and reminded that they are subjects of the crown.

  6. What’s the difference between crazy Moose-lims and jihadist Moose-lims? Do they both get virgin’s?!? Asking for a friend…

  7. Take away the guns and the “Crazy Muslims” will start killing with knives. Then they will advocate knife control like England.

  8. Seems to me that more lives are ruined by politicians and their decisions that effect the citizens. I say it’s time for Politician Control.

  9. This past April a deranged person murdered 10 people by motor vehicle. Toronto has great public transportation plus Uber/Lyft. No one needs to own an automobile.

    • Both Uber and Lyft are trying to push laws to ban private car ownership. They want everybody to use self driving ride share pools in the near future.

      • Yes they are but a fleet of self driving cars is farther away then the technologists realize. Autonomous vehicles operate on a strict rules based system. The reason that driving is just about as safe as it can be is because human drivers know when safety requires you to break rules. An overlooked factor in the safe operation of the few number of autonomous vehicles is that when human drivers see the driverless vehicle doing something unsafe they make adjustments. If there are only atonomous vehicles on the road driving by rule there will be an unacceptable level of accidents. Remember the Uber vehicle that killed the pedestrian in Phoenix? The first reports were its sensors failed to detect her. Later Uber admitted that she was detected. The vehicle had no rule to prevent the accident. Autonomous driving does not scale. It works best when there are mostly human drivers to compensate for the inflexible program.

Oh, and there that entire hacking thing.

        • I think you’ve got that backwards. In a completely computer controlled environment there will be no activities or occurrences that are unaccounted for by the rules. No garbage inputs, no garbage outputs.

If this wasn’t the case fully autonomous warehouses with dozens of driverless heavy vehicles wouldn’t be a possibility. Yet they function as flawlessly as physically possible. Closed system.

        • Those are simple, controlled environments. On the road there is weather, pedestrians, bicycles, cats and dogs. The weather will degrade sensors, people will ignore the rules and complex interactions will lead to situations not covered by the rules.

Beyond the hacking issue, malicious individuals and spoof sensors causing localized chaos on the roads.

  10. The Mayor – like many others who know nothing about firearms – seems to think that one gun will do everything. That simply isn’t the case as gun savvy people know. Guns are designed for specific purposes – different game, different circumstances, etc. No different than any other tool, car, etc. They each have their specific capabilities and uses.

    • I can see these same kinds of idiots screaming about hammers if somebody used a few of them in a brutal mass killing. “Why does anybody need 5 hammers?”

Framing hammer, finish hammer, claw hammer, backup claw hammer, small, nimble claw hammer….

(I must be a hammer-obsessed psycho, I own all of the above and even use them all for work. The horror!)

I wonder if there’s a correlation between idiots not understanding that different iterations of broadly similar tools can be needed for different purposes, and a lack of self sufficiency in general?

  11. What does a limit on the number of guns someone may buy at once or own overall have anything to do with this crime committed by a guy with just one gun?

Oh, I see, he goes on to say that one is too many, as well. Got it. The government of Canada failed its people, as governments eveywhere do repeatedly, so now they want to punish said people by further restricting their rights.

I haven’t been following this story closely, but I’ll go out on a limb that this shooter is, as mostbof the craziest of there are (let’s say it altogether now!): KNOWN TO THE POLICE!

I would also accept KNOWN TO CANADIAN INTELLIGENCE SERVICES.

These whackjobs usually are known, yet nothing is ever done about them. The government always just shrugs its shoulders, trots out the tiree excuse that they can’t follow up on every possible lead, then moves to snatch more rights from the people.

    • Actually neither. He was not a jihadi, and was not on anyone’s radar, and had no prior arrests.I haven’t heard anyone come out and say it exactly, but it appears he obtained his pistol legally, which is no easy matter. I am not sure, but I think he was born in Canada as well.

    • They’re Canadians… They don’t have rights the way Americans have rights. Our rights were fought for by men with guns and are sustained under the right of armed revolt if the government goes too far. Canadians have rights bestowed upon them by benevolent overlords…. (in theory) our rights get stripped at the risk of great hazard to government officials; Canadian rights get repealed, because the government can bestow or take away at will, and the people have no right to revolt….. as a matter of fact, our border was defined by people who chose to live under the crown and men who chose liberty. They chose not to be American and we chose not to be Canadian for some very substantive reasons.

  12. In the end, he’s bothered by people able to do things for themselves. Protect themselves. Work and succeed. Arrange their own health care, n live their lives.

  13. Aren’t Canadians prohibited from owning more than 2 “restricted” firearms, with all handguns being “restricted” firearms?

  14. “Let’s force lawful, successful people to give up their self-protection.” Seems like a poor plan, until you realize why Mayor McPoutine there got into politics in the first place. Nobody was going to do what he said, unless he had armed enforcers to make them. Now, if he were convincing, or his ideas good for people, he wouldn’t have such a problem getting them to go along, would he?

Government — Policies so good you have to force people to do them at gunpoint.

“Gun Control” — We don’t want people able to push back when they’re threatened; especially when the threat might come from us.

Government “Gun Control” — We’ll take the guns by force, once, so imposing the rest by force isn’t such a big deal.

  15. “Enforcement” threats work on peaceful, successful people … because they’ve got something to lose.

It’s almost as if putting productive people at risk, twice, is the whole point of “gun control.”

  16. Effective Immediately by Mayoral Decree:
“Whereas no person should be allowed to possess any weapon that could potentially be used to assault any other person;-
“All persons must immediately surrender both hands and at least one foot to the local Magistrate.”

  17. I guess no one bothered to tell the neo-liberal pieces of crap that run Canada about how often completely homemade SMGs are showing up on their streets. I know the Raw Carrors Mashed Potato squad busted one shop making TEC-9s about a year or two ago. But I’ve still seen reports of MAC-10 copies showing up in crimes and gang raids.

    • And their solution to that would be to ban the instructions for such things. That’s leftist thought process in a nutshell though, never EVER admit to a fundamental failing of your ideas. Just double down, triple down, quadruple down, etc after each failure.

    • open bolt smg’s are among the easiest firearms to manufacture…there have even been cases where they were made in prison workshops…

  18. Lead by example, mayor: make sure everyone you employ and associate with does not carry or own a gun. Fire them if they do.

  19. All muslim shooters are declared to have mental health issues, he is muslim, he is a shooter, therefore he has mental health issues. Not to be profiling or anything but being muslim seems to bring out mental health that people may have, or maybe being muslim is what develops mental health issues in anyone?

  20. How did this guy shoot so many people when Canada has restrictions on magazine capacity? The law is supposed to stop mass shootings by allowing police to make it to the shooting before many people are shot.

  21. Dear Honorable Sir,
My condolences on the loss of life in your city, however, your call for more “Gun Control” is based on a very common misconception, and that is that laws prevent things from happening. “Laws Prevent Nothing.” That is not a theory, but a well established fact. Laws, are simply the means by which a society attempts to control behaviours/actions and/or contraband, through financial penalties and/or imprisonment of the transgressor(s). If laws prevented crime, then we’d have no drug problems, no theft, no burglary, no assaults, no murders and so on. The fact that we still have these problems proves the point. Adding more laws to an over bloated penal code will achieve nothing, other than the very brief “feel good” moment that we’ve done something about a problem. Then the next time the problem reoccurs, we wring our hands and demand even more legislation. In the end, we’ve done nothing to prevent such an occurrence from happening again. All we’ve done is take more freedom and liberties away from our citizenry. What would have stopped the massacre in your city or at least lessened it, would be armed citizens. They would have put the madman down long before the constabulary ever could have. The only thing that stops a bad guy is a good guy!

  22. “You’ve heard me ask the question of why anybody would need to buy 10 or 20 guns, which they can lawfully do under the present laws. And that leads to another question we need to discuss: Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?”

I am so glad we have a Constitution and are not like Canadians who have seen even basic English common law on liberties erode.. This asshat mayor doesn’t realize his “and that leads to another question” is exactly the slippery slope

ALL GUN CONTROL “leads” to that question: why does anyone need to have a gun! That is the problem

  23. More gun control? How is that supposed to work? If existing laws don’t work, how will new laws be any better? Big question is, how to get the drug lords, drug dealers, gangs, rapist, murderers, corrupted police, and mayors to obey the law? They all disrespect any and all law!

  24. this govonor is a TOTAL ASS HOLE… They need MORE PEOPLE with guns…. Police CAN’T BE EVERYWHERE…. If some of the people at those restaurants had been properly ARMED THEY could have stopped the gunman LONG BEFORE he killed/ injured all of those people… POLICE were way to late to be effective….
