We haven’t heard hide nor hair of .9mm handguns in quite some time. In fact, we’d thought the trend had gone the way of the mood ring. TTAG reader TH set us straight, sending a screen cap of Academy Sports + Outdoors page for the .9mm Smith & Wesson M&P9c. Given that the price of the micro-pistol is the same as a full-size 9mm version, I’m thinking there must still be astrong demand for .9mm’s – although I can’t for the life of me figure out why. Little help?

    • I recall visiting the real springfield armory in springfield MA in the mid 60s with my dad who was active duty just before he retired from the army

they were experimenting with flechett rounds for shotgun and grenade launcher as well as a saboted single finned tungsten dart for both the nato 7.62 and 5.56 the dart itself was about 1mm the fins may have stuck out to 3 or 4mm. they needed a smooth bore to work and were getting 5000+fps with acceptable accuracy
but the big problem was throat erosion forward or the chamber and over heating with even short bursts the research provided Remington with data they later used for their 30-06 sabot .22 which they sold at retail for a while it did about 4000fps as i recall
the shotgun flechett rounds got to combat testing i think but not the rest of the stuff

      • Larry,
Cool story, but you’ve really got to work on punctuation.
Or, is this some kind of meta joke, you leaving periods out to make up for the extra one in Academy’s ad?

  1. Weapon aside, Academy is as good as any cabbage patch for your next purchase. They have to limit ammo sales because of whore-ders 😉 but they keep the limited types up by the check-out.

    • My wife went to a local Academy (on her own volition!) to look at 9mms (or was it .9mms?). She was disappointed with the selection, but reported ammo was fairly decent (bar the .22). If it wasn’t for local private sellers with ammo, they’d be my new go-to for retail ammo. They had way more in stock than Walmart. All other places, such as LGS’s are over-priced.

  2. Do people seriously not think 9mm is enough bullet? Do y’all have defensive gun uses against gorillas? Haha. Seriously though, I think 9mm is plenty of gun. It is the most popular military and police handgun caliber, isn’t it? I could be wrong about that.

  3. I’m holding out for a .9mm Glock with an external hammer that fires cartridges whole, and makes random clicking noises whenever it’s drawn or pointed.

  4. I have 0.5mm graphite in in my mechanical pencils. Maybe S&W is making mechanical pencils now. I’ve seen pens made out of .50 BMG cases.

  5. It’s obviously a typo. This article I didn’t find humorous if that’s what it were intended to be as if TTAG doesn’t make mistakes.

  6. Ugh, Academy… Its hit or miss with these guys in the store and also at corporate it seems. I had a run in a while ago with them about ammo limits. The specifics matter in this case, and in mine, so bear with me.

Walked in one day looking for .22 LR. Their policy, which is printed out and posted in several places both in the ammo section and at Customer “Service” (which is where they keep .22 LR at my local Academy BTW) says ” Limit two per customer, or one Bulk* pack per customer (Bulk is defined as 250 rounds or more).”

So I ask for two 100 round boxes of CCI Mini-Mag and the guy at the register says “I can only sell you one of those.” Perplexed I probe for more information. “That’s a bulk package,” he explains. I interject with “Your policy, posted in your ammunition department, says that ‘bulk’ is 250 or more.” He shoots back with “Sorry man, thats the way it is.”

I called their corporate office (seriously, I was so pissed I called a phone number) and explained what happened. They girl on the phone who had no friggin clue about the actual product I was referring to told me I was being lied to and that she would pass it on to the regional manager of the store if I wanted. Told her I didn’t care, just wanted clarification. She agreed with me.

LONG STORY SHORT, Academy Sports has decent prices on pretty much everything when they know what they’re f——- talking about. But then they put someone in charge who has no f——– clue about what they’re making decisions on. In my case it was some dipsh— sales rep and what constitutes “bulk packaging.” In this case it was what the actual diameter of a bullet fired from a gun in reference to a highly sought after CCW pistol.

Can’t help those who can’t help themselves, right? RIGHT!?!

  7. Recently read a news article about a shooter who used a “Remington .870 like law enforcement officers use.”

    .870? That’ll leave a big hole!

  8. I just checked and it’s still up! I’m going to order now, I can’t wait to get my own. I hope it has a decent rollmark with the .9mm on it.

  9. I fell asleep and woke up to a sit-com just in time for the actress to say she shot a 22mm parabelum. Guess the writers just pick a few words from a list of gun terms and throw them together when they write a script.

  10. That seems a little steep Base exchange had the Shield9 (which I bought) 375 no tax, MP40c 465 no tax and MP45c 495 the 5 was the background check fee even though I had a CC license. and a box of 50 9mm was 10.20

  11. At my age, I’m afraid I might not see well enough to be able to find any .9mm ammo I drop onto the floor. Especially if it’s carpeted. But on the positive side, the recoil might be easier to handle.

  12. I have been considering getting a .9mm handgun but I cannot find any .9mm ammo. Nothing. Zip. No FMJ, no hollowpoints, no cheap paper-punching ammo. It is as if they invented this gun and did not have the forethought to ask if any company produces .9mm ammo.

  13. Wow! .9mm = 1/32nd of an inch, or .035 433 caliber.

Just imagine how many “bullets” one could carry in a “clip”.
