On the day that Chicago Mayor Richard Daley decried the Supreme Court ruling guaranteeing Americans’ constitutional tight to bear arms, Detroit reports that the city’s gun crime has dipped dramatically. “There were 140 homicides from the start of the year to Wednesday, a 27 percent reduction from the same period in 2009,” the Detroit News reveals. “Nonfatal shootings were down 22 percent during that period.” Is gun control working in Motor City where it’s failing in the Windy City? Nope. More like police control . . .
When [Warren] Evans became chief on July 6, he announced a plan to use statistics to determine in which neighborhoods to deploy officers. He set up a mobile strike force, which is given assignments daily based on crime ‘hot spots.’
“When the chief took office, he talked about using a data-driven approach, and we saw dividends from that almost immediately,” said Assistant Police Chief Ralph Godbee.
While there are demographic factors and chronic crime misreporting, it’s clear that there are better ways to fight gun crime than making it hard to law-abiding citizens to purchase a handgun. Just sayin’. Again. Still.

With police budgets being cut nationwide and the number of police out there being reduced, it is nice to see a city like Detroit make the most out of their money and come up with workable solutions to fighting crime. Maybe the village idiot in Chicago will sit up and take notice.
