Today, we have a Charlottesville Chef sending his everyday carry ensemble.  Julian Williams calls it his “The chef keeps it simple” submission.  Courtesy of Everyday Carry.

Look!  Another Smith & Wesson M&P Shield.  The only difference?  Julian likes his Shield a little spicy with the .40 S&W.

He’s got a folding blade knife (a S&W “Extreme Ops“).  At first I didn’t see the light, then I noticed he’s got a little Olight keychain light.  130 lumens…  nothing to sneeze at for general purpose use.

And the phone…  a BlackBerry.  I didn’t even know they still sold phones!

Happy cooking Julian!  And kudos for carrying a gun.  Because sometimes a harsh word doesn’t get the job done.

  1. That little Olight model I1R EOS is the same one I keep in my pocket for my EDC light. It’s amazingly powerful, and does the trick. One of my security buddies tripped out over it because on its highest lumen setting it’s almost as bright as his larger (non-Olight) flashlight that uses two CR123A batteries.

I have another Olight for my yard light, and another for my weapons mount. I’ve been a Surefire guy for upwards of two decades, but I’m really impressed by these and the charging system.

    • lol no. I agree it’s a great tiny light, but brighter than a 2x cr123a light? Not possible. That little thing is 130 lumens and a wide beam soft LED to compensate for such low lumens. I have not seen a 2x cr123a light below 300 lumens, and even some of the olight single cr123a’s brag about being 1,000 watts… keep in mind, those versions are only that way because they have about a 500mAh high drain and they only run for 1 1/2 minutes that way lol. Batteries matter. But this 130 lumen one only takes an 80mAh 3.7v that is also high drain, so it should be enough to light the floorboard of your car or a doorway, but the throw would dissipate much differently than a higher lumen big brother for even some pretty old models. I’d actually like to see what version of light this thing was brighter than.

I have tired Olight, and personally, don’t like them. The side mounted buttons and forced to face upwards in your pocket style clips just turned me off. Numerous times I had the button get hit and saw a flash of light from my pocket to the ceiling. It was awkward. Everyone pointed and laughed like something out of an 80’s movie during school or a visit to the mall. Also been a surefire guy for years due to freebies from the Army. Now days I strive for medium results and average scores so I find Streamlights to be perfect. No high drain junk, just decent lumens and decent battery life. Oddly enough, the 100’s of extra cr123a’s I have are surefires, but the rechargeable EDC batteries are all streamlights.

      • It’s Olight for me nowadays. I actually prefer the buttons and magnetic recharging.

Lumen discussions aside, I’m telling you that this little thing visually looked almost as bright (that’s why I used the word “almost” in my previous comment) as his own newer 2xCR123A. He thought so too. No, it isn’t as robust or *technically* as bright, if you’re looking at specs and comparing lumens by the math. But visually, as we shone both of them into the palms of our hands, looked very bright and up there in the range of his.

Can you just let a guy have his fun talking about how impressed he is with his toy? Don’t be that guy that walks up to little kids to break the news that Santa doesn’t exist.

        • “Don’t be that guy that walks up to little kids to break the news that Santa doesn’t exist.”

Huh? Doesn’t exist? What are you talking about?

Every X-mas eve, other kids leave out lame-ass milk and cookies, we leave out a six-pack of beer and a bag of fried pork rinds. And X-mas morning, it’s all gone!

Weird thing is, dad always gets some nasty farts every X-mas morning… 😉

        • Actually, a big one-piece pink bunny rabbit pajama sleeper.

I put up with it because I knew there was a Red Ryder BB gun wrapped up and waiting for me behind the couch.

  2. A flashlight with a purpose, inserting keys. Now that’s a light worth carrying. Kudos on the 40 Shield also. A man that realizes that all that high tech invested in the modern day super duper 9mm is lost on sub carry guns, carries a .40, if he can handle it. I also prefer my cheese burger medium all the way with mustard if you please.

      • You take it back! You don’t use that kind of language in this place of worship. Mustard on a burger is American. Hell, mustard is just plain American. What do you use? Ketchup? What are you, some kind of fascist? 😉

(I use both – but nothing beats a good mustard)

        • *Spicy* brown mustard belongs on ground beef grilled over a lump charcoal flame… 😉

        • No mustard for me on burgers. It’s for pig!

I also do not put Ketchup in a burger either.

I do occassiinally make a remoulade out of all the spreads that might go on a burger with grilled onions and mushrooms.

But for regular old ground round hamburgers – mayo lettuce tomato , and some rings of vidalia onion.

          Mmmmmmm…mmmm

But seriously, a good burger is good with many dressings….even miracle whip.

      • Awesome. Gonna try it myself. Worth a shot. I do a little “binging with babish” occasionally 😉

But how long does it last?

  3. I mean, those thermometers are absolute crap. Tiny buttons, crap display, less than stellar build quality. They do fit in the stupid arm pocket of your whites though. Also, that probe cover is a germ farm waiting to happen. Thermapens are huge, but dead simple, indestructible and easy to clean.

    • stuck a glass therm into some mac and cheese. it popped and covered the food in mercury. i took it to the park, figured maybe the squirrels would care.

  4. The Shield is like the budget-conscious or promade-in-America P365. I like them both but the price and quality of the Shield is hard to argue with

    • Along with what you mention and it’s track record for reliabilty, I have 2 in 9mm just in the very rare case I lose one from a very rare DGU.
So that’s 3 Shield EDC’s in a row, time for a EDC with a wheel gun, metal frame, or without a gun like that one a week or 2 ago.

    • Never shot a p365, but I’d take the round count and slightly smaller size all day. I suspect S&W as well as Glock and other subcompact makers will eventually catch on, but the p365 is by far superior to its predecessors on the market right now. I own 2 Glocks and a S&W, and the S&W is my current EDC and sometimes my G43, but when I get my hands on a p365, it will be the one and only for a long time.

    • Is there a documented case of a non-leo conceal carrier who was going about his or her day (not defending against a home invasion which is a whole different animal) and upon finding a bad situation, had to empty his or her firearm, reload and, continue shooting? Or clear a malfunction with a spare mag, for that matter, and continue shooting?

I only ask because unless there’s quite a few of those cases it’s absurd the way people act like not carrying a spare mag is somehow a big deal. You’d do better to wear a helmet to protect from inadvertent head injuries or accidents- the number of those is well documented.

      • I was with you at one time Hannibal, then I had a little incident at a gas station that made me start carrying a spare magazine.
I never had to draw my weapon but I was outnumbered horribly and if it would have got worse, 1 magazine wouldn’t have done it.
Now I carry a spare at the least.

      • Or… body armor? But wait… can we do that?

The whole point is just like for carrying a flashlight, and when it comes to ammo, you can never have enough. A spare mag is small enough that if you have three or so attackers and had to empty a single mag you can reload quickly for anything still posing a threat. It mainly started for smaller guns like subcompacts.

And yes, there are plenty of stories where someone gets into a firefight and could’ve used more ammo. I have seen more than I can count even. Seen one where a guy was a gas station and got rolled up on by two thugs, he caught them slipping and even though the one he did not shoot first was able to return fire, there was an exchange going on for some time between the two of them. That said, wouldn’t you like to know you have enough ammo for such a situation?
