“..(T)he gun-manufacturing industry is a diverse and international market. The Belgians took over making most AR-pattern weapons for the Army back in the 1980’s. Our police forces overwhelmingly carry Austrian Glocks. Most handgun magazines sold in the United States are Italian. Of the five best-selling civilian handguns of 2016, only two were American-made. The remaining three were Austrian, Swiss, and Croatian.

“The idea that this diverse smorgasbord of companies is somehow determining American gun law is as far-fetched as it seems. Just try to imagine two Americans, an Austrian, a Croat, and a Swiss man agreeing on what to eat for lunch, much less ruling American gun politics.” – Matthew Larosiere in The Idea That American Gun Manufacturers Block Gun Control Is a Myth [via nationalreview.com]

  1. FN took over making M16s in the 80s? I thought that was recent. When I got out of the army 8 years ago every M4/M16 was still Colt.

    • Yeah, because of the Colt strike in the 80s their quality dipped, and the M16A2 contract went to FN. Colt owned the M4 TDP until like 2009 though, so only they could legally make them and brand them as M4 Carbines. FN recently got the Army’s latest M4 contract, but that’s been disputed and Colt and Remington got in on it too (I think).

      • There are Three Phases in the US Army’s Weapons Qualification Course! Since 2007, Colt’s Mfg. is the “Only” US Small Arms Mfg. every too pass Phase One in the Competition. No Other US Small Arms Mfg. has even gotten through too even reach the end off Phase One. And when either of FNH and/or HK wins, they usually chose Colt’s Mfg. as a Sub-Contractor to make Quality Replacement Parts…

    • You may be on to something. Perhaps we should only allow people in from countries we buy guns from and in the proportion that supply them. Austrians before anyone from the Middle East, but it does break down shortly, since Britain, Australia, and New Zeland don’t make anything to speak of.

      • I don’t think we need anybody from Britain, Australia, or NZ. They tend to be commies these days. One former Commonwealth nation we should take people from is South Africa. Especially since the farmers are being murdered and their land taken.

        • And exactly what are you comparing that with! Forty-Seven Farmers killed between 2017 and 2018 compared to 19,016 killed in the City in the Same Year. And only 34.1% of those 47 Farmer were “White”…

  2. Sure. Gun makers simply aren’t big business, compared to say GE, Siemens, Boeing, or any of the other large international manufacturers; they don’t have the footprint and, thus, not the influence.

  3. I’m not that old but didn’t Bill Ruger kowtow to guncontrolers in the 80’s and 90’s with restricted capacity magazines only offering Standard capacity to Law enforcement among other things, also requiring you to send your rifle in for any parts that needed replaced.
Springfield Armory negotiating special carve outs with progressive sleazeballs for their company in Chit-Cargo.
Then there was something with S&W int he 90’s? (IDR)
Seems like some companies did screw the pooch on Our gun rights.

    • It’s still difficult to get Ruger to sell replacement parts for anything since they’re so frightened of liability suits. Bill Ruger sent a letter to Congress when Congress was debating the AWB and said “I don’t know any reason why an honest man would need more than 15 shots” but they had already decided on 10.

      • Back then, Ruger wouldn’t sell it’s 30 round Mini-14 mags to the public, so it may have been his honest Fudd attitude. The rumors I heard at the time was it was an attempt to gain market share against Glock. The P85 held 15 rounds, and the Glock 17 held 17, so if he could get a 15 round limit, he could remove one of the many advantages Glock had. The grabbers took it down to 10 and screwed everyone. The gun makers then reacted, since all guns hold 10 rounds or less, we can get pocket pistols with the same capacity as service pistols, and the easily concealable pistol market exploded. I guess the last laugh was on the grabbers.

      • I call “BS” on not getting replacement parts!! Recently purchased a used SR9c on GunBroker and realized that the upper pin that held the metal frame to the polymer stock was missing. Called Ruger and had a new pin free of charge in less than a week!!

    • “Then there was something with S&W int he 90’s? (IDR)”

      Hillary Hole

“Seems like some companies did screw the pooch on Our gun rights.”

      Like the NRA?

  4. I believe that it’s Ameria’s diverse smorgasbord of gun owners who determine gun law. Except in CA, NY, NJ, MA, etc. of course.

    • I was scratching my head at this too… Big Swiss gun companies… Sphinx, nah, b&t, no… Wait are they talking about Sig? Hahahaha!

  5. And s&w had the hillary hole if I recall correctly. Locks on revolvers.
There were all sorts of compromises and changes made to make weapons that could be sold during that silly “ban” on “assault” weapons.

    • Be careful what you wish for.

Bill Ruger (RIP) was in favor of banning anything he didn’t make.

AR15s? We don’t make those. Ban them and make everybody buy Mini 14s instead.

      • “Be careful what you wish for. ”

He’s got a point on that one. Imagine what Glock, who has mastered the making *millions* of decent (if plastic) guns for a cost of about 100 bucks each in volume could do to Ruger who needs to spend some money doing metal work to make a beefy hand-fitted .454 ?

Hands-off the companies (unless a free state wants to offer “refugee-status” via a sweet tax break to relocate a gun company “behind Progressive enemy lines” to their friendly shores…

    • …….Better to be burdened lest we become complacent.
POTG lean on the nra too much as it is, They compromise away too much ground on our Rights. (Like playing the roulette table with someone else’s money, when they lose they throw their hands up and say hey we tried; Too bad, so sad)

  6. Don’t forget Turkey,Brazil,Slovenia,Slovakia,China,the Philippines and other’s. The monolithic American manufacturer is a myth…

  7. That’s strange, when I commented a couple weeks ago on Cops using ” German” ( Austrian) pistols I was told I was wrong because” the majority of cops guns are not made in Austria” . ???? It’s like arguing with my x wife. Its not black or white, it’s a very dark grey and a lite shade of pale.

  8. NRA has 5.7 million paid members, making it the largest actual grass roots civil rights/liberties adovacy organization and a top five paid membership organization of all types in the US. No gun control group has more than 400 paid members, not one.

NRA also 58% approvals among all Americans in the most recent Gallup. sure that may bump down a bit due to the direct and withering attack from the gun control lobby spending a few hundred million dollars to attack it, but as we have seen the number goes back up to over 50% even after such a strong attack.

Standing up for second amendment rights has never been about gun makers — it has been driven by citizens who are members of NRA and other groups — and the majority of citizens who support the NRA

    • But if you want to take a broad definition of “gun control group”,

      American Association of Retired Persons
      American Academy of Pediatrics
      American Federation of Teachers
      American Medical Association

all have more than 400 paid members, and that’s just the letter As I can think of off the top of my head.

      • There’s also “The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility” of NYC, “Sister’s of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary” of Maryhurst, OR., and “BlackRock Financial Planning and Investment Management” of Singapore. Which just by themselves, have Controlling Stock Portfolio’s to change the Operations Policies of Remington Firearms…

      • THIS old guy joined AMAC-Association for Mature American Citizens. Extremely pro 2A, pro American and conservative. Their mag looks like American Rifleman
        …AARP sux.

        • AARP S**ks…… this is true! They are true believers in the progressive agenda.

          AMAC is much better.

  9. The last time that ANY US Small Arms Manufacturer won a Contract to supply Rifles for the US Army Weapons Qualification Course was in 2007 (i.e. Colt’s Mfg’s LE6920). Since 2008, virtually ALL Small Arms manufactured within the United States went from Mil-STD. to Mil-SPEC. Because Mil-SPEC have Looser Tolerances and are Cheaper to Produce. The Two Mil-STD. Suppliers are FNH and HK…

  10. Don’t the stimulat-y economists say that demand creates supply. We need to dump fake money into the banking system, spend on government works, break some windows because that will make *demand* which will pull everything forward. Jobs for fake money replacing stuff somebody broke on purpose is progress.

If gun manufactures make guns, there must be demand. It’s science.

  11. I thought they were all made in America due to some wacky law from the 60s?

I see Smyrna, Georgia and Exeter, New Hampshire on the slides, not Switzerland or Austria.

  12. Well plenty of gun companies supported import bans or outright said nothing when those happened….

    Don’t forget 922r either.
