I’ve Supported the Second Amendment My Whole Life. It’s Time for Reasonable Gun Control – Oh look, TIME finds an MSNBC analyst who’s for gun control. There’s a real black swan event . . .

I grew up around rifles, shotguns and handguns. My family lived on the outskirts of a small Mississippi town near a hospital. Once in a while, an inmate receiving medical treatment there would escape, causing some excitement among those listening to the police scanner until the inmate was caught. As a child, an escapee knocked on our door one night, asking to use the telephone. My aunt declined to show hospitality. The inmate bolted, probably into the woods. Soon enough, the police knocked on our door, too, as they tracked the escapee. (They caught him.) Though my aunt never touched a gun that evening, she certainly had ready access to plenty of options, and the incident impressed upon me why it could be helpful to have one in the house.

But the Parkland shooting in Florida, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, was the culmination of several troubling years of legal guns winding up in the wrong hands, and I am now convinced that those of us who have previously been Second Amendment absolutists — myself included — should support common-sense gun control. The American government is so broken it is literally killing people, as well-funded bureaucracies fail to keep guns out of the hands of men and women who are not fit for the awesome responsibility.

In High School, I Fervently Supported Gun Control. Now, I’m An NRA Member. Here’s What Changed – He grew up . . .

A few years into conservative thinking, reading, and arguing, I recognized my opposition to guns came from social snobbery more than reason. I genuinely believed all we needed was a government declaration that guns were no longer legal. None of those ideas were challenged in a way that changed my mind. To this day I am uncomfortable around guns and do not have an interest in owning one. What changed was my view of my rights.

My grandfathers and dad held a deep understanding of their right to own and carry firearms. It was so normal to them it seemed absurd to suggest otherwise. My dad chose not to have a gun around, although he never let go of a childhood rifle he kept locked away “just in case.” His desire to protect me from harm motivated his restriction on my gun education as a child, but he never forbade me from pursing it as an adult. It was always my choice.

These Are the 5 Most Deadly (and Portable) Guns on the Planet – They illustrate the Ruger 10/22 Takedown with a photo of the Ruger Charger. And three of their five “most deadly” are .22’s. Maybe the National Interest should stick to, you know, national security and stuff . . .

Firearms have a well-deserved reputation for appearing large and bulky. Long, thick barrels, heavy-duty receivers and banana-shaped external magazines often make firearms look burdensome to carry on a long trip, particularly by foot. Some firearms are designed for portability, or to combine two different functions within the same compact platform. The result are firearms that offer security and the ability to hunt or do a little plinking in the backcountry.

Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Suggests Repealing the Second Amendment – Thank goodness no one really wants to take away our guns . . .

The chairwoman of the Louisiana Democratic Party is the most high-profile Democratic official in the country to date to call for a repeal of the Second Amendment.

Karen Carter Peterson on Tuesday shared a New York Times op-ed by former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, who arguedthat the Second Amendment should be repealed because the initial reasons for its creation are “now a relic of the 18th century.”

The Washington Free Beacon reached out to Peterson and the Louisiana Democratic Party for comment and clarification, but no response was offered.

Peterson also serves as a Louisiana state senator and as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee.

BOCES teacher’s aide Gillian Jeffords charged with carrying loaded gun into Jesse Kaplan School: police – As a licensed concealed carrier, she should have known that’s a no-no . . .

Police Officer Peter Walker said Jeffords was licensed to carry a concealed firearm in New York and Pennsylvania. She was issued the New York permit by an Orange County judge.

“At no point was this weapon displayed or used in a threatening manner by the teacher’s aide,” Walker said.

Detective Lt. Glenn Dietrich said he would not speculate on why Jeffords took the gun to school but, even if it was by mistake, the law is clear that possession of a gun on school grounds is a felony.

“As a gun owner with a permit, you should know what you can and cannot do,” Dietrich said.

    • And the left gets all upset when we try to explain to them why they’re so terribly wrong. Ignorance on full display in that article.

Reading it makes it seem like the author doesn’t understand guns at all. The explanation of a simple blowback action (in regards to the 10/22) was long winded and the article even tries to compare it to the M1 carbine so as to get that “military style weapon” bit in there. Unfortunately most lefties won’t even know what an M1 is, except it used to be a military gun.

      • Ok and now we OFFICIALLY NEED gun education in school! the M1 carbine was a short stroke gas piston affair IIRC and NOT a straight blowback. The 10/22 uses the energy from the cartridge being fired to operate the action where the M1 carbine taps gas from the fired round in order to operate the action. If anything it’s more closely related to the M2 50 caliber. oooo still scary? Too bad because the 10/22 is NOWHERE even remotely near being a military weapon even though it uses an operating method similar to military guns from long ago.

Guys we really need to get out and start taking stories like this to task in our communities because I guarantee someone you know now thinks your little 10/22 is a freaking assault rifle and that the US military used the 10/22 in WW2.

        • I guarantee someone you know now thinks your little 10/22 is a freaking assault rifle and that the US military used the 10/22 in WW2.
General Patton said the Ruger 10/22 was the best battle implement for war ever invented by man.

        • ” because I guarantee someone you know now thinks your little 10/22 is a freaking assault rifle and that the US military used the 10/22 in WW2.”

A 10/22 in a adjustable stock with pistol grip and BX-25 mag in it is an AR-47 to some.

      • There actually is a .22 based on designs by David Marshall Williams of M1 Carbine fame – The Remington 550. Also, my first rifle – many years ago.

      • Where’s the original Taurus Raging Bull? that shit is freaking scary! (seriously though, a 28 gauge revolver would be fun as hell to shoot)

      • My Savage 502 is just like that pistol except it’s a bolt action . take 10 round mags so it’s capable of unbelievable carnage for a ,22

Ban .22LR for the children, such as David Hogg!
      On second thought….

  2. “The American government is so broken, it is literally killing people.”
…so naturally, I should give the government even more power than the excessive amount they already have, and allow it to take away more of my rights ?!
Perhaps, first we should discuss an American government run by “men and women who are not fit for the awesome responsibility”!

    DrDKW

    • If we did that we wouldn’t have much of a government left now would we?

Not saying I would complain about that though…

  3. Duh’oh¡!
The ONLY reason I own a Glock is BECAUSE it’s supposed to be on the most dangerous lists.

  5. “As a gun owner with a permit, you should know what you can and cannot do,” Dietrich said…”

Maybe, but anyone without a law degree looking at the NY penal code would probably find it easy to get the completely wrong takeaway. It makes ANYTHING to do with guns illegal, and then sets out an exception section which includes those with a license to carry. If you stopped reading there you would think you’re good to go, but actually there is an exception to that exception buried in the text which renders it no longer an exception when it comes to several particular sections, one of which is schools.

What I just wrote was probably more easy to understand than the actual law.

    • I didn’t realize it was that bad but I’m not surprised. The slave states love nothing more than to punish honest gun owners for the sin of *gasp* owning a gun, and only because the courts won’t let them ban forearms entirely

    • The reality is a carry permit in places like NY is pretty useless. They even dictate what guns you can have in the house and you need to register all of them or it’s no dice.
Basically you can carry concealed in your back yard, unless it’s next to a prohibited location.

  6. “I’ve Supported the Second Amendment My Whole Life. It’s Time for Reasonable Gun Control” read like it could have been written by some who comment here at TTAG; thieves, appeasers, or cowards.

  7. I didn’t notice in the article exactly how Gillian Jeffords’ handgun was discovered. Was the SRO rooting around in her purse? Did he think there might be a doughnut in there?

  8. Louisiana democratic party chair is one of the first against the wall when the left starts the 2nd Civil War.

  9. Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Suggests Repealing the Second Amendment – Thank goodness no one really wants to take away our guns . . .

    TOO LATE!!

You already showed us your ass, Dems. Can’t run from it now. So, you’re running ON it.

  10. “The American government is so broken it is literally killing people, as well-funded bureaucracies fail to keep guns out of the hands of men and women who are not fit for the awesome responsibility.”
That’s funny. It’s funny because it was those well funded bureaucracies that were so interested in making themselves look good that allowed that kid to legally get a gun in the first place.
We don’t need “sensible” gun control, we need more people in government to do their jay oh bee.

John in Ohio says: “I didn’t notice in the article exactly how Gillian Jeffords’ handgun was discovered. Was the SRO rooting around in her purse? Did he think there might be a doughnut in there?”
I was wondering the exact same thing. Why was someone rooting around in a closet?
If the g un was never displayed (meaning no one ever saw it before it was “discovered,”. one has to wonder just what led to its discovery.

While I’m on a complaint jag: why is the comment section still broken?
Why isn’t there any comment from the people who are supposed to be in charge of this, telling us what steps they are taking to fix it? Do they figure this is the way it’s supposed to be?
It really can’t be that hard, since lots of other blogs have it all figured out.

  11. But the Parkland shooting was the culmination of years of legal guns winding up in the wrong hands, and I am now convinced that those of us who have previously been Second Amendment absolutists — myself included — should support common-sense gun control.
Actually I support the Second Amendment, BUT I am now for a common sense total gun ban.

  12. I can see calling the most common .22lr one of the most ‘deadly’ guns if you consider how much small game it has taken.

The rest are stupid as hell, though.

  13. “Long, thick barrels, heavy-duty receivers and banana-shaped external magazines ”

Freud would have a field day with this guy….

  14. “The American government is so broken it is literally killing people, as well-funded bureaucracies fail to keep guns out of the hands of men and women who are not fit for the awesome responsibility.”

Here she conflates gun-ownership with the failure of American bureaucracies, government, schools, and police, to keep guns out of the hands of obvious crazies for the simple reason they ignore existing laws which, if competently applied, would have prevented these recent shootings from occurring. The material problem is the inherent incompetence of bureaucracy. More “commonsense gun-control laws” may make people feel better about themselves but they will not magically make incompetent bureaucracies less so.

  15. At least now the bullshit can stop and the democrats can just be open and honest about disarming us. I like it better that way and they might even lose a few votes from people who believed their bullshit about not wanting to disarm us, for years.

Lets see them round up 300 million guns when the Aussies didn’t even get half a million. And they paid for the guns, these people just want them collected.

  16. It’s amazing, the number of people who are as confused about the meaning of “common-sense” and “reasonable” as Merriam-Webster is confused as to the definition of an “assault weapon”.
