College Professor Who Shot Himself Also Says He Wants to Ban AR-15s

Professor Mark Bird Shot Himself Trump Protest

courtesy fox5vegas.com

Last week, a deranged sociology professor at the College of Central Nevada shot himself in the arm in a campus bathroom because, he said, he wanted to protest the existence of the Trump administration. He was charged with a variety of felonies and has since been banned from the campus.

But according to an apology letter he wrote that was obtained by Blue Lives Matter, 69-year-old Mark Bird was motivated by more than just the deplorable 45th president. Bird was also upset by a variety of societal ills including, naturally, civilian ownership of AR-15 rifles.

I sincerely apologize for my behavior today. I was motivated by multiple reasons. A major reason is, derivative of the following October 20, 2017 CBS news story, the Earth had roughly 100 million malnutrition and pollution deaths in the past decade — and the Earth is on a course for at least another 100 million such deaths in the next decade. One hundred million deaths are more than all the military and civilian deaths of [World War II].

A less significant motivation relates to the October 1, 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting from the Mandalay Hotel that killed 58 people. Since this incident, there has been no national legislation banning bump stocks, banning civilian ownership of AR-15 type assault weapons, and the passage of universal gun background checks legislation. Apparently it is about as easy to buy an AR-15 as a 2-shot derringer.

I have sent a longer essay on my motivations to Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson and others.

Bird mentioned the Derringer in his apology because that’s the gun he used to blow the hole in his arm.

He told police that he had brought the gun to the college to shoot himself because he was unsure of how much blood he would lose, and he knew he would get medical assistance in the campus building. He said the College of Southern Nevada police “would not allow him to die.”

Bird told Officer Summerlin that he had purchased the gun to shoot himself about two months earlier, and that he only bought two rounds of ammunition because he only needed to fire the gun once.

There’s no word as to whether the professor will have to undergo a court-mandated psychiatric evaluation, but that might be a really good idea.

How do you buy 2 rounds of ammo?

“How do you buy 2 rounds of ammo?”

      Really.

Be careful, though – I bet the Leftists would *love* to require an 8-dollar background check on every round of ammo sold…

      1. avatar Bearpaw says:

Folks at gun shows routinely sell as many rounds as you like, whether one, two or 223.

But likely just a lexiconical ambiguity.

        1. avatar LarryinTX says:

Gun shows I’ve been to (maybe it’s Texas) don’t allow ammunition in the building.

        2. avatar Hannibal says:

This guy did not go to a gun show.

    2. avatar Frank M. says:

I was wondering that as well. I’ve seen gun stores selling bags of reloaded ammo but never loosies.

      1. avatar Kc in NorCal says:

That was my first thought as well. Maybe he bought it used but either way if a guy asked to buy a gun and 2 rds of ammo I wouldn’t think many people wouldn’t have alarm balls go off.

        1. avatar *splortch!* says:

Gotta be careful when those alarm balls go off… Makes a helluva mess. 😀

      2. avatar rosignol says:

I’ve seen it once, back in the 90s. They had gotten a load of surplus .50 BMG and were selling it for $1 a round, no minimum.

I bought one as a curiosity. Should probably take the powder and primer out, it’s not exactly safe to use as a paperweight, and I’m not likely to get anything chambered for it anytime soon.

Should have stocked up, 400-500% appreciation over ~20 years isn’t a bad return.

        1. avatar Roger J says:

The S&P index is up about 300%. But there would have been 80 quarters of dividends. And that is a lot of money.

    3. avatar strych9 says:

There is an LGS here that sells loose ammo by weight for popular rifle and pistol rounds.

Kinda like how some stores sell nuts or candy; grab a bag and use the provided scoop to fill the bag(s) as you like, price is based on the final weight.

I’m not sure how they would price two bullets. If you got them st the same time as the gun they might just give you the two bullets rather than bother figuring out a price.

      1. avatar jwm says:

In my youth a lot of the country stores would sell loose rounds. Us kids bought a lot of rounds for our .22s and .410s 3-5 at a time.

Then the .gov got involved and made everything so much better. Do I really need the sarcasm thingy here?

      2. avatar rosignol says:

Around here, I’m pretty sure that someone who wanted to buy a firearm and only two rounds would be refused and kicked out of the shop.

Someone who only wants two bullets has something very specific in mind.

    4. avatar American Patriot says:

Hell I would have given him the two rounds if he’d promised to use both of them!

    5. avatar Hannibal says:

The simplest explanation is that he’s a liar.

    6. avatar CarlosT says:

And what was he planning on doing with the other one?

An environmentalist nut-job. This is my surprised face…

    1. avatar J says:

The environment is just following Socialisms example.

    2. avatar million says:

      “100 million malnutrition deaths”

100 million is a rounding error to Venezuela and all the dictatorships in Africa and the Middle East.

      1. avatar LarryinTX says:

World population needs to decrease 1-2 billion, at least, so I’m not real worried about this nutcake, even if he is right. And what in the world does the number of deaths in WWII have to do with anything? How many deaths can be attributed to the actual policies of leftists in the past 100 years, never even mind their violent methods? Starvation, plague, suicides, cannibalism?

        1. avatar Kendahl says:

I’d go farther than that. (My wife and I have by not having children. In 20 years at most, we’ll be gone, too.) The only good news is that, as education levels increase, people figure out for themselves that fewer children means a better life. Then, birth rates begin to drop.

    3. avatar uncommon_sense says:

A much, MUCH more relevant question: how many impoverished children was this nutty professor sponsoring? There are many charities that will provide basic food, clean water, and clothing — and even some education and healthcare — for around $30 per month per child.

Unless this nutty professor was voluntarily and sacrificially feeding several impoverished children, he has no righteous authority whatsoever to advocate that government take our money to feed such children.

    1. avatar Howard McClellan says:

He’s a liberal if he would have promised to shoot himself between the ears I would have given him the two rounds free.

  10. avatar RayS says:

This whiny bitch didn’t have the guts to kill himself for the ’cause’, a true “Snowflake” and POS.

    1. avatar Ing says:

My thoughts exactly. He could have reduced the overpopulation/pollution problem by one instantly, but instead he chose to make life worse for everyone around him. This guy is a waste of space.

      1. avatar bryan1980 says:

Yeah, it’s funny how these people want someone else to implement their loony ideas. He rails about “pollution”. Well, go live in a mud hut somewhere without electricity or water. Be the change you want to see in the world.

      2. avatar Howard McClellan says:

Because he’s a liberal if he would have shot himself between the eyes. He would have raised the IQ points of the population of this country by at least 5 points.

  13. avatar Defens says:

Note to nut job – In many states it’s actually easier to buy an AR-15 (rifle) than it is a 2-shot derringer (pistol.) How’s that sit with you?

    1. avatar GS650G says:

I can buy an ar15 across state lines but a derringer has to go through an FFL and be shipped in. Because it’s a sneaky handgun

  14. He sounds like a deranged mental case to me. No doubt he is. I have included a

would go Bolshevik ballistic if the The John Birch Society in Appleton, Wisconsin

deserve the moral high ground on the Second Amendment issue, private gun
ownership, and considerably more which remains censored via or government
controlled socialist public schools, colleges, universities, and academia. Don’t
get me wrong about the NRA. They collectively are a sound sane sensible and

gun safety and instruction, hunter safety education, and even to an extent
women’s safety and awareness. The NRA is worthy of our support. But lets not

I wonder what appendage he’ll shoot (off?) when Trump is re-elected?

  16. avatar Kenneth says:

He bought two rounds because he was only going to need one? Obviously not a math professor. Nor even able to pass first grade. Just how much stupid does it take to think that one plus one equals one?

  17. avatar DaveL says:

Ah, the return of a common theme in the gun control movement: “I’m a complete nutjob, and my policy positions should be adopted.”

  18. avatar Old Fur Trapper says:

  20. avatar Ed Schrade says:

Since he shot himself in the arm to protest the Trump administration then maybe he should shoot himself in the head to protest A R 15’s.

  21. avatar Tom Edwards says:

This idiot does not even know what a AR-15 is. He hears Automatic Rifle-15. Blow a hole as big as a elephant in a wall. No most AR-15 is about size of a .22 bullet. A 222 caliber. A bullet less than a 1/4 inch. Just too bad he did not put it between eyes or in his ear. May have done some good. One less idiot!

  22. avatar Sheep Dog says:

Hey pig Manure for brains your political ideology is what causes the 100M malnutrition/ pollution deaths, coupled with civilian disarmament and not the least Murdering political opponents.
Long live the “Khmer Rouge” eh’ comrade Bird?

  23. avatar Nanashi says:

Should have shot himself with one instead of a 22 then.

    1. avatar Hannibal says:

My thought as well. What kind of stupid way of proving a point about AR-15s is it to shoot yourself with a itty bitty mouse gun?

      go big or go home

      1. avatar ACP_armed says:

I’d say he passed on using an AR-15 because he would have to learn something about it to use it. And he can’t do that.

    1. avatar Howard A McClellan says:

“If he was a true believer he would have shot himself with an AR instead of a wimpy derringer Apparently, he was not a man of true convictions” All that would have had is more velocity for the same caliber bullet. If would have been a true believer he would have shot himself with a 1911 45 caliber pistol or an M14-A now that a true believer.

  25. avatar Alec Johnson says:

I would agree with him completely if he would have shot himself in the head..

  26. avatar Curtis in IL says:

“Apparently it is about as easy to buy an AR-15 as a 2-shot derringer.”

Ironically, in Illinois it is EASIER to buy an AR-15 than a derringer. Handguns here require a 3 day waiting period, compared to only 1 day for long guns (gun shops don’t complain that you have to walk past their inventory a second time to pick up your purchase).

Of course the forces of evil in the Illinois legislature are trying to make it 3 days for all firearms. I’m sure that will save lives.
