Would-Be Reagan Assassin John Hinckley Asks for Unconditional Release

John Hinckley Reagan Assassination Brady Murder Insane Release

courtesy usatoday.com and AP

Two years ago, John Hinckley, the Jodie Foster-infatuated gunman who shot President Ronald Reagan, Press Secretary James Brady a Secret Service agent and a D.C. policeman, was released from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. He’d been in treatment there since being found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 1981 shooting. Since he got out, he’s technically been on “convalescent leave” and has continued to receive treatment and monitoring (though that regimen seems less than rigorous).

James Brady was critically injured in the shooting that day and was permanently disabled. When he died in 2014, the cause of death was ruled a homicide, a result of the bullet Hinckley put in his brain. Yet federal prosecutors refused to charge Hinckley with Brady’s murder.

Prosecutors pointed out that any jury in a murder trial would be directed to consider that he was already found to be legally insane at the time of the incident and “the government would be precluded now from arguing that Hinckley was sane at the time he shot Mr. Brady.”

Now, Hinckley’s asked for an unconditional release.

The court records reviewed by News4 show Hinckley made a motion for “unconditional release” from his commitment in an April 30 hearing before a D.C. judge. The filing from prosecutors said Hinckley cited a code in D.C. law allowing people to seek release or changes in the conditions of their custody. …

In their filings to the judge in Hinckley’s case, federal prosecutors acknowledge they hired an examiner to review Hinckley’s “present mental condition and whether or not he would pose a danger to himself or others if released under the conditions proposed by officials with the Department of Behavioral Health.”

Insane at the time of the shooting or not, Hinckley killed one man and wounded three more. He very nearly assassinated the President of the United States. The fact that he’s walking free these days is grating enough. It doesn’t seem too much to ask that, at the very least, he be required to continue treatment and monitoring for the rest of his life.

Let him go. Hinckley is 63, Reagan is dead, Brady is dead and Jody Foster is gay. I don’t think we have anything to fear from John anymore, and housing him is a bit too expensive.

    1. avatar Klaus Von Schmitto says:

I don’t think anyone who knows me would say I was soft on criminals but I have to agree.

If you don’t think he was crazy when he did it we might as well not have an insanity defense.

If he’s not crazy or a danger now, let him go.

      1. avatar Eric in Oregon says:

“If he’s not crazy or a danger now, let him go.”

        Ditto, 100% agree.

      2. avatar LarryinTX says:

Release him with the caveat that if he is somehow killed, there will not even be an investigation.

        1. Don’t wast any more taxpayer money on him.

    2. avatar jwm says:

Maybe he has the idea to ‘convert’ Foster. If I was her I would have an attorney speaking up to keep him under lock and key.

      1. avatar Indiana Tom says:

She is part of Hollyweird anyway. Who cares?

    3. avatar New Continental Army says:

You do realize the plan is to let him go, so he can try to assassinate Trump right? I garuntee you that’s what’s going to happen.

      1. avatar Gov. William J Le Petomane says:

That would explain those late nights at Squeeky Fromme’s apartment…

    4. avatar Cliff H says:

I would only like to mention in passing how often we see stories of shooters, mass murderers and otherwise violent miscreants here who were in fact STILL under the “care” of the so-called “mental health professionals.” How many of the recent school and other mass killers had diagnosed, supposedly treated, mental issues at the time of their crimes?

And here again we have a man who is/was certifiably insane and we are supposed to trust these psychs that he is somehow safe to be let back on the streets?

Here’s an idea: Get a recognized and licensed psychiatrist to sign off on the release on the proviso that if Hinckley kills again the psychiatrist must share his sentence and jail cell.

      1. avatar New Continental Army says:

Right. I Have zero confidence in some egg head who got into that particular field because they have severe issues to workout themselves. Not to mention nearly all have a political agenda.

    5. avatar RMS1911 says:

No this bush flunky needs to die.

      1. avatar Joe R. says:

        He’s solid POS (D). He’s a symptom.

    6. avatar Jeff says:

Why not just get an insane guy to throw the switch?

    7. avatar D B says:

The sad truth is that had he chosen some less prominent victims he would have been released a decade or two ago.

    8. avatar No Bs.. says:

Well, that’s a big relief that ” you ” don’t think he’s a threat anymore. Even the mental health so called experts get it wrong. Of course, maybe you’re more knowledgeable than they are and can guarantee he won’t commit
another horrendous crime. What’s that ? You can’t guarantee it ? Imagine that…. How about this, I can guarantee he won’t commit another crime.. Solution ? Keep him behind bars, not out on the streets.

  2. avatar Ironhead says:

Release him? Sure. Right into an assisted living complex where he cannot walk free.

  3. avatar former water walker says:

Why is this even on TTAG? Slow news day?!?

    1. You don’t see the connection to guns in this story?

      1. avatar former water walker says:

The fact is Ronald Reagun used this mope who shot him with a 22 as the face for gun control is the story. THIS idiot should have been fried long ago. Brady had a living death. How was this fool punished?!? Spawned the Brady bunch from our “friend’s” the republitard’s & the NRA. I guess you have to run something…

        Hey, Dan –

“Shannon Watts has a bodyguard who travels with her. He doesn’t carry a gun—his job is to scope out the local hospitals and know which one to rush her to if she gets shot.”

    BULLSHIT.

    F THEM AND HINKLEY.

HE CAN BE RELEASED INTO THE HIGH WALLED PRISON THAT WE PUT THE REST OF THEM INTO.

    1. avatar JasonM says:

Are you trying to amass evidence to support your own insanity defense one day?

      If so, it’s working.

      1. avatar Joe R. says:

        Again and still,

At least you didn’t call me wrong.

      2. avatar Klaus Von Schmitto says:

        Perfect. Too funny.

  5. avatar RA-15 says:

Release him back in to his cage , let him rot there till he dies !!!

  6. avatar Finger-Snappin' Hippie says:

Are we doing minimalist poetry now? Cool.

      Well done!
      I throw down with haiku…
      Assassin Hinckley
      Crazy as an effing loon
      Used a tiny Röhm

  7. avatar George from Alaska says:

Bullshit on release. His genetic makeup is flawed but he appears to be cognizant enough to file court paperwork. The fact that Brady died is murder whether they officially charged him or not. If he is clever enough to file paperwork no then he should have his sanity reevaluated and put on trial for murder and attempted assination of a President, which I believe carries a death penalty?
Fuck him, these creeps never change and the fact that Jodi is gay probably only turns him on more.

  8. avatar m. says:

Hell no, the murdered victim can never come back – why should this AH be free to roam for even a day? Criminal has more importance/value than the victim?

  9. avatar BD says:

They are betting in a game of poker risking my blood. I bet the judges and the courtroom psychiatrists would be a bit more circumspect if they had their skin in the game regarding their professional pronouncements. For example, what if the law stated that, if he suddenly goes “insane” again, there will be an eye for an eye shared between him and the judges and the psychiatrists that let him free??

  10. avatar Texican says:

Ron White said it best: In Texas, if you kill someone, we will kill you back! Psychiatry is not an exact science. Not even close. I wouldn’t let him out. And I’m with BD. If he does something again everyone involved in his release should pay. Have a blessed day!

    1. avatar BLAMMO says:

Every dog I’ve ever owned was more predictable than most of the people I’ve known. He may be less of a danger to himself or anyone else than most people who’ve never been psychologically evaluated.

But, would you give him a pistol license?

  11. avatar Jross says:

Jodie Foster could totally mess with the dude now and nobody would believe him.

    1. avatar m. says:

if the dude got taxpayer funded trans-surgery, he could get in line to compete for Jody

  12. avatar Dog of War says:

Well I’ve never truly believed in permanent punishment outside of the most extreme circumstances. And while I don’t believe this should necessarily be unconditional release I don’t have a problem with him being given a loose parole.

All that said, I can already guarantee we’ll be some leftist a-holes on social media making cracks about assassinating President Trump. You might even see the Steven Coberts of the world making that joke.

    1. avatar Fudds Mckenzie says:

      +1

  13. avatar New Continental Army says:

Fuck this new age hippie Shit. He’s a murderer and would be assassin. He will try to kill again. Hang his ass as the founding fathers would have.

  14. avatar GS650G says:

The secret service should have felled him when they had the chance.

    1. avatar Geoff "Mess with the Bull, get the Horns" PR says:

Man, they were reaching in their coats for those micro Uzis they had then, from what I recall of the video…

  15. avatar Fudds Mckenzie says:

Seems like a BS insanity defense to me. On of a few from that era, mostly wealthy people. But oh well, it worked. If he’s not insane or guilty what are you going to do.

I don’t blame him for the AWB. Gun grabbers will always find an excuse, a casus belli. If it might save just one life, right?

  16. avatar Joe R. says:

Is it Big Internet or TTAG censoring out comments about Hinley’s relationship to the POS (D)?

  17. avatar MIO says:

He needs to die. Nothing else

  18. avatar Chris Delboy says:

I doubt people would have been as eager to release the assassin of MLK or RFK had they been adjudicated insane at the time of their crimes. He should remain incarcerated. Period.

  19. avatar Chris T from KY says:

And people wonder why we have a mental illness problem in the public space. Why we have so many people peeing and taking a crap in public. It doesn’t surprise me that so many people above are willing to allow a mentally ill murderer to walk free Among Us.

Libertarians and liberals and the Left say the mentally ill need treatment. And then be let free to perhaps murder and rape again????

  20. avatar Jan says:

This murderer should Never Ever walk Free. No one knew he was insane when he attempted to murder our President and shot four people that day. How would we ever know that he would not become insane and do it again. Can crazy people be cured?…or, are they just crazy enough to dupe the system. Bad idea…Very, Very bad idea.

  21. avatar Shwiggie says:

I don’t care about any timelines regarding his mental state. This murderer should have been executed decades ago.

  22. avatar Lowell says:

Do a youtube search for “Derren Brown Assassin” and then “directional sound library” and then realize that The Manchurian Candidate was not fiction so much as bragging.

Even White-Washipedia has to acknowledge that the program exists:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_MKUltra

  23. avatar james says:

How will he support himself, perhaps a job at CNN or MSNBC?

  24. avatar Brian says:

So he’s now sane? So, now try him for murder and attempted murder. He may relapse, so the least that needs to be done is to keep up treatments and monitor him at all times. People kill or attempt to kill at all ages, so age should not be used as a reason to let him go.

  25. avatar John Barrett says:

I say let him go after you tell him Foster is bi and having an affair with Pelosi
