TTAG Daily Digest: Ayatollahs for Gun Control, the Gun Divide and Amy’s Birthday Wish

Expect to see his endorsement on the Moms Demand Action and Brady Campaign websites by Monday . . .

Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has released a statement calling on the United Nations to “seriously” pursue seven “human rights” cases in the United States. One of these is what Khamenei perceives as the need for gun control.

“Another case which the UN should definitely pursue is the freedom of selling guns in the US with which so many crimes are being committed,” Khamenei said in a statement published today.

High-profile teen gun control activist David Hogg hints at Memphis protest versus FedEx

FedEx had the effrontery to maintain its NRA member discount program after Parkland . . .

Well-known teen gun control activist David Hogg posted social media statements Wednesday that suggested he plans a Memphis protest against FedEx.

“See you this summer,” he wrote to his 813,000 Twitter followers, adding a smiley face. “1000 Ridgeway Loop Memphis, Tennessee.”

“That’s FedEx,” he wrote in a subsequent post. (FedEx is listed as one of the tenants in this East Memphis office building, but the main FedEx headquarters is at 3680 Hacks Cross Road.)

People immediately began asking for more details, but Hogg didn’t add much, writing, “More info to come.”

The surprising way gun violence is dividing America

This is only surprising if you haven’t been paying attention at all over the past 50 years . . .

To better understand how the geography of gun violence may affect how Americans think about the issue, The Washington Post analyzed data on gun deaths from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for every county from 2007 and 2016 and the nonpartisan Gun Violence Archive from 2016 to present. (Our full methodology is explained at the bottom of this post.)

A distinct pattern emerged: In Democratic regions of the country, which tend to be cities, people are more likely to be murdered with a gun than they are to shoot themselves to death. In regions of the country won by Republican, which tend to be rural areas and small towns, the opposite is true — people are more likely to shoot themselves to death than they are to be murdered with a gun.

Dick’s Shocked To Find Their Gun Sales Plummeting

I don’t think they were really all that shocked . . .

They’ve found the answer to that question. This month they were forced to announce to their shareholders that gun sales had tanked and were not expected to recover any time soon… for some mysterious reason. (Business Insider)

Other aspects of their business are still doing well enough for overall profits to rise, but they’re just not moving anywhere near as many firearms (of any type) compared to previous quarters. Shareholders probably won’t be all that put off since a positive number is always better than a negative one. But Dick’s is still leaving money on the table here. How much better would their overall profit picture be if they’d stood their ground and continued selling the full range of guns rather than choosing to take a side in an ongoing political debate? (And it was clearly the wrong side for their target audience if you’ll pardon the phrase.)

Amy Schumer is using her birthday to send a clear message about gun control.

Or you could wear any other color to show that you care more about your Second Amendment rights . . .

June 1 is Amy Schumer’s birthday.

In lieu of cards or well-wishes, however, the comedian is asking her fans for a more sobering gift: for each one of them to give a damn about America’s gun violence crisis.

In an Instagram post shared with her nearly 7 million followers, Schumer encouraged everyone to wear orange on June 1.

“Hi! Tomorrow is my bday,” the star, who turns 37 this year, began her caption. “If you want to say happy birthday to me please do it by joining me for #wearorangeday tomorrow as a sign to end gun violence. Everytown.org can help!”

  1. avatar Ranger Rick says:

Is suicide by firearm actually considered a form of “violence” ?

    1. avatar Lonesomecrow says:

      Anything to inflate those numbers

    2. avatar piper says:

About as much as smoking 4 packs of cigs a day.

    3. avatar John in AK says:

It sure isn’t a form of ‘peacefulness.’
Ever seen the aftermath of a gunshot suicide? Ever clean up after one?
Driving a high-speed metal projectile through a living human body tends to be, um, ‘violent.’ Especially heads.
Yeah, I’m thinking that suicide by firearm is ‘violence,’ sure enough.

      1. avatar Timothy says:

The problem with labelling suicide by gun as “gun violence” is the purpose of the label. It’s purpose is to lump suicides in with assault and homicide to artificially inflate the numbers. And it is an enormous double standard that is not used for other types of suicide.

Hanging yourself isn’t peaceful, but no one will ever call it rope violence. Slitting your wrists isn’t peaceful, but no one will ever call it knife violence. Pack your family into a car and drive it off a cliff and no one will ever call it automobile violence.

Tell me that a car at the bottom of a cliff filled with dead bodies is somehow less messy or violent than a suicide by gun. You can’t. That’s what makes you such a hypocrite who looks at all suicides and decides that only suicide by gun needs a special label. All to push a political agenda designed to limit my rights and the rights of every American.

      2. avatar Sheepdog6 says:

John, I provide a blunt answer to your questions…

        Yes. Yes.

You know damn well that that violence upon another human being is very different than violence upon oneself.

This is an apple, this is a banana, and this is my middle finger.

      3. avatar CZ Peasy says:

Anything that causes a physical injury is violence – vehicle crashes, a doctor amputating the wrong limb, getting your hand caught in a meat grinder, falling off a ladder, tripping over your cat, stepping on a LEGO block, bleeding gums from overly harsh flossing, etc. The possibilities are endless!

        1. avatar Big Bill says:

          “… a doctor amputating a limb…”

          FIFY

      4. avatar Gordon in MO says:

Yes I have. A young Marine, just out of bootcamp, first time away from home, arrived in the Far East and was assigned to my company. He apparently decided he could not take it, stuck the muzzle of his rifle in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

Yes, it was messy. We were all pissed off at him because we had to clean up the mess.

Yes, it was a tragedy and I wish it hadn’t happened but don’t blame me and don’t blame the rifle, he pulled the trigger, it didn’t go off by itself.

      5. avatar Erik Weisz says:

Therefore suicide by hanging must be “rope violence”, by pills is “pharma-violence”, and jumping off bridges is “gravity violence”. Got it.

  2. avatar Shire-man says:

Suicide to the left is a tragedy but jumping through bureaucratic hoops to be euthanized is great and noble. #mybodymychoice

    1. avatar Defens says:

Which makes no sense. Since the highest levels of suicides (by their accounting) is in rural areas, shouldn’t urban limbs be rejoicing that us hillbilly are killing ourselves off?

  3. avatar neiowa says:

Dear Ayatollah Towelonhead – Every blade of grass.

    1. avatar Joe R. says:

      444 days.

  4. avatar Ralph says:

amyschumer Hi!. Tomorrow is my bday. If you want to say happy birthday to me. Please do it by joining me by wearing a fat suit tomorrow. As a sign to end obesity. Weight Watchers can help!

    1. avatar Gov. William J Le Petomane says:

It never ceases to amaze me what the folks at Sea World can train whales to do.

      1. avatar Laserbeam says:

Thar be whales!! I’m surprise she wasn’t harpooned.

    2. avatar Bloving says:

@Amyschumer – does a blaze orange vest while scouting public land to hunt on this fall count?
I swear, there’s never a hungry alligator around when you need one…
      🤠

      1. avatar Gov. William J Le Petomane says:

Alligators prefer a low fat diet.

    3. avatar Ragnar says:

Amy Schumer, as a criminal, supporting sedition and inciting insurrection against our Civil Rights, perhaps she should be wearing an orange jump suit.

    4. avatar ColoradoKid says:

Hope she doesn’t resort to wearing her birthday suit! Then again, that might help to drive off supporters.

  5. avatar Gov. William J Le Petomane says:

Dick’s same store sales were down overall, but they opened enough new stores to raise profits.

  6. avatar New Continental Army says:

Amy Schumer is in that picture? All I saw was a black and white picture of a whale at a distance.

  7. avatar AlanInFL says:

Hey, Iran. How about stop sending cannon fodders into minefields. Or how about opening up to free elections.

To Hogg, please like down on the runway and tarmac to see who wins. Heavy equipment or your losing ego.

    1. avatar Geoff PR says:

“Hey, Iran. How about stop sending cannon fodders into minefields.”

      Pffffpt.

Allah will protect them and guide the bullets they shoot.

And if they get slaughtered, it was the will of Allah.

      What a wonderful ‘religion’!

    2. avatar AD says:

If hogs want to have a “die-in” on the landing strip in Memphis… I’ll show up and give my support. Remember kids: The middle of the runway is the safest place for you. When the last plane passes you only have about 3 minutes to go lay down for the “die-in” so remember why you’re there and GET MOTIVATED.

  8. avatar SouthernShooter says:

Tomorrow is NOT my birthday. But you can shut your F*T face up!

  9. avatar Gun Free School Zones are a crime against humanity says:

Who supports gun control? soros, bloomberg, iran, north korea……… and if the UN wants to see real gun violence, let them land blue helmeted targets in the US.

  10. avatar RA-15 says:

Dick’s are just that !! The ayatollahs kiss my American ass and go back to under the rock which he slithered out from. Mind his own affairs. Same with the David Hogg’s looking for attention. Y’all go Fuck yourselves. I’m sick of being told what I can own. As a free American who’s never harmed a soul , learn or get schooled imbicile.

  11. avatar WhiteDevil says:

Reading some of the comments at the hill, it is apparent what other members of our society think of us gun owners and NRA members. One individual, who has apparently taken too much of their adderal, is posting on every pro-gun post. They’re calling us scum and that the NRA is a terrorist organization and that nobody is going to believe our “BS downward trend in violence statistics lies,” even though you clearly link to the FBI crime statistics. Does anyone else get beyond pissed when you read what these clowns post or have you become so used to it that it isn’t worth the time to respond to them? I used to get enraged when I would read these comments, and I still do sometimes, but, I’m trying harder, to do my best, to realize that these peoples opinions are just that, opinions. Opinions not based on facts or truths, but, blinding hatred because of the 30,000 deaths due to guns each year and the fact THAT GUNS ONLY PURPOSE IS TO KILL. Funny, despite them stating that their only purpose is to kill, they sure don’t reach the numbers of deaths caused by auto accidents. Cars are ONLY DESIGNED FOR TRANSPORTATION, but, they sure got the jump on guns with regards to death.

    1. avatar Just Sayin says:

      ^ this
“Funny, despite them stating that their only purpose is to kill, they sure don’t reach the numbers of deaths caused by auto accidents. ”
I’ll see that and raise you Death by Medical Errors.
Funny thing with that is… If you net search the “top ten causes of death in the US”, death by medical errors are rolled into “accidents” (as #3 on the list).
Kind of like all the “accidental” shootings. God forbid you call ’em what they are, Negligent Discharge.

  12. avatar Felix says:

Every time I see David Hogg, all that stands is out his tiny pursed mouth reminding me of every nanny-state scold I have ever met. Then you throw in that clenched fist salute as if he is trying to mimic Mussolini, and everything fits. A fascist by any other name is still a fascist.

  13. avatar JasonM says:

    Wear orange tomorrow!

    1. avatar Joe R. says:

      Lipstick

  14. avatar Paul McMichael says:

Did she mean florescent hunting orange? Just want to make sure I’m wearing the correct shade.

  15. avatar former water walker says:

The Ayatollah is an Azzawhola…gee my kids birthday is tomorrow. He’ll be thrilled he shares it with slutty the whoer…Hoggboy must think he has a future. We’ll see…Dick’s sux.

  16. avatar FedUp says:

And since Dick’s has indeed decided not to sell assault-style weapons, at least for the foreseeable future, it may be hard to go back to gun distributors in the future.

“We don’t have the best relationship with the firearms manufacturers right now,” Belitsky added.

Mossberg & Sons is a gun manufacturer that sold firearms to Dicks, and Belitsky isn’t too sure where the manufacturer might stand on giving Dick’s business. “Mossberg did indicate that they weren’t going to sell us on a direct basis,” Belitsky said.

  17. avatar Adamanter says:

We have our own overabundant Ayatollahs who insist that those who do not bow and salute mindlessly and subserviently to them should be struck down, who want to smite any who dare think or act different from them. Their names include Ayatollah Bloomberg, Ayatolla Schumer, Ayatollah Pelosi, Ayatollah Emanuel, Ayatollah Clinton, Ayatollah Hogg, and unfortunately the list goes on and on.

  18. avatar Ed says:

I think that David “communist” Hogg should go spend some time with his like minded pal Khamenei…they deserve eachother.

    1. avatar strych9 says:

The Iranian government is extremely anti-communist and has been since 1979. It was one of the reasons they gave the Shah the boot after the invasion of Afghanistan, because they feared Soviet invasion which would have meant communist rule and secularism at the barrel of an AK74.

Hogg would still love the authoritarian nature of the Iranian regime though.

      1. avatar Ed says:

        We’re playing Semantics now?

  19. avatar Omer says:

Never thought about suicide, until I saw that pic of Schumer on the lake. Nas-ty>p

  20. avatar No one of consequence says:

So … FedEx. Perhaps because they ship firearms and ammo?

    1. avatar strych9 says:

I was wondering about this as well. What’s Hogg’s beef with FedEx?

      1. avatar Karl says:

They refused to drop the NRA program. If it anything like the district my wife works in FedEx isn’t afraid to tell people to go pound sand.

        1. avatar Geoff PR says:

“They refused to drop the NRA program.”

          I really hope they don’t fold…

        2. avatar John in AK says:

          Aaaand. . .. There ISN’T a ‘FedEx NRA Program.’

FedEx’s ‘Advantage Program’ is offered to ALL small businesses and consumers that are members of that association. There IS no ‘special NRA discount’, according to FedEx, and never HAS been. In addition, according to them, the NRA ships things from their online store via UPS, NOT FedEx.

          From their website:
“FedEx is a common carrier under Federal law and therefore does not and will not deny service or discriminate against any legal entity regardless of their policy positions or political views. The NRA is one of hundreds of organizations in our alliances/association Marketing program whose members receive discounted rates for FedEx shipping. FedEx has never set or changed rates for any of our millions of customers around the world in response to their politics, beliefs or positions on issues.”

Now, to be fair, this is FedEx’ opinion on the matter at hand:
February 26, 2018 – “FedEx Corporation’s positions on the issues of gun policy and safety differ from those of the National Rifle Association (NRA). FedEx opposes assault rifles being in the hands of civilians. While we strongly support the constitutional right of U.S. citizens to own firearms subject to appropriate background checks, FedEx views assault rifles and large capacity magazines as an inherent potential danger to schools, workplaces, and communities when such weapons are misused. We therefore support restricting them to the military. Most important, FedEx believes urgent action is required at the local, state, and Federal level to protect schools and students from incidents such as the horrific tragedy in Florida on February 14th.”

All it takes to find out the actual story is one Google search. Sooooo difficult. . .

        3. avatar No one of consequence says:

John: none of which explains why M. Hogg might want to target FedEx for his next extortion demand.

    2. avatar Pawl from Florida says:

I don’t think that Hogg has anything against the NRA , Publix , or Fed Ex . I believe that the anti’s like Bloomberg found themselves an idiot that got bullied a lot and will do anything he is told to do to feel important . The liberals are funding his foolishness . He is a nobody that all of a sudden got national recognition . That requires funding and media connections.
It is their hope that some harm will come to Hogg just to prove their agenda. We have already seen proof that he is being compensated . If my kid was killed in that tragedy he would be in big trouble.

I may not be correct , but that is my opinion.

Hunting mooslims is like turkey hunting. The bigger the beard the better.

    1. avatar Gralnok says:

      So true.

  22. avatar Gralnok says:

So orange is now antigun? And here I thought it was just a color to attract attention. Like traffic cones, warning flags, deer hunting hats, and prison outfits.

  23. avatar Kyle says:

Always good to know that the Totalitarian’s in Iran have more things in common with the Totalitarians in the Democrat party, than not.

    1. avatar FedUp says:

That’s why a backwards, oppressive, sexist religion is highly favored by the very progressives that it hates, while less oppressive religions like Christianity get nothing but scorn from the same progs?

  24. avatar Mark N. says:

Khamenei is a hypocrite. He and the other ayatollahs have been supplying arms–and not just small arms– to Hamas and the Syrian Regime for decades, They supply the Yemen rebels. He supplied arms to the Iraqi militia. And he does all this for no other reason than that those he supports are Shi’ia and hate Israel. In short, he foments terrorism. And he thinks the US should, just like the Iranian regime, prevent its citizens from owning guns? Cute. Or not.

  25. avatar AD says:

Media is like the weather, only it’s man-made.

  26. avatar Leighton Cavendish says:

I would buy a few more guns, but the ones I want are not available yet…IWI TS-12…Avidity PD-10…Schmeisser SLP-9.
    Hmmm…where did 11 go? LOL

  27. avatar Casey says:

The thing that fouls my bore is that June 2nd is MY birthday. At least by the transitive properties of EVERYTHING IS ABOUT ME, I can claim to be victimized by anyone wearing an orange shirt on my special day, right?

  28. avatar No one of consequence says:

Yeah, wear orange! That’s The Donald’s color, right?

I can’t wait to thank someone wearing orange for supporting the president…

  29. avatar rt66paul says:

Amy, I also hate gun violence, so I will keep my guns safe and close by just in case some idiot is hurting others with their gun or is hurting poor defenseless guns. These guns can not defend themselves, so they need protectors.

  30. avatar Ironhead says:

The attention hogg is starting to get desperate. IIRC, the fedex facility in memphis in on airport property… that will look good, a bunch of punks getting arrested on airport property.
Is that picture of amy shumer paddling around on a nuclear submarine?
And to the ayatollah… go eat some bacon.

  31. avatar Soccerchainsaw says:

How about we wear orange and open carry our pistols? After all, the only way to end “gun violence” is to stop it in its tracks as in “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun…”

  32. avatar Ing says:

“Another case which the UN should definitely pursue is the freedom of selling guns in the US…”

Even the Ayatollah can recognize freedom when he sees it. (Of course he doesn’t like it…)

  33. avatar Chris T from KY says:

Liberal gun store owners don’t understand basic economics. If they were operating a pot shop they would be just fine in that business endeavor. I’m sure they are Sanders and Hillary supporters.
Dicks will be out of business with in a year. And what do the share holders thInk???
