Quote of the Day: Fort Lee’s Fed-Up Edition

Fort Lee Mayor and MAIG man Mark Sokolich, right (courtesy fortlespatch.com)

“You always have that issue about imposing on people’s rights, but the rash of violence, including the Sandy Hook episode, just so outweighs those rights.” Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich quoted in North Jersey town councils, school boards back tougher gun laws [via northjersey.com]

  1. avatar Totenglocke says:

Yes, that “rash of violence” resulting in historically low murder rates…

  2. avatar Hobbez says:

Founding fathers are rolling over in their graves…..

    1. avatar Anonymous says:

“You always have that issue about imposing on people’s rights, but the rash of violence, including the Sandy Hook episode, just so outweighs those rights.”

The founding father’s founded this nation with the intention of the people having power – not the government. The Bill of rights were rights guaranteed to the people that the government could not infringe upon. Nothing outweighs those rights. Countless people have fought and died for them (in more than just this country – and not succeeded). Here we already have them and we want to throw them away?? A rash of violence has nothing to do with the second amendment. The solution is addressing violence not the second amendment. Taking the guns away is not going to take the violence away.

  3. avatar DaveL says:

From the 1798 Sedition Act to the War on Drugs to the Patriot Act, you’d think some generation or other would finally learn to turn a jaundiced eye on any claim that the abrogation of our rights is justified by this or that sensational event out of the news headlines.

There have always been sensational happenings and there always will be, because it’s part of our psychological makeup. If Sandy Hook massacres happened every day we wouldn’t consider them justification for anything. If murders virtually never happened, the killing of one gang-banger by another would make national news. Unless all events somehow had exactly the same emotional impact, some of them will stand out in our primitive brains and capture our imagination. We must consider our rights as withstanding the existence of such events or else they aren’t rights at all.

  4. avatar Chip says:

Yes, bad people use violence against others, so we should make it harder for good people to defend themselves. That makes perfect sense.

  5. avatar Rambeast says:

One time in our history, guys like this would be dragged out into the street, tarred, feathered, and ridiculed. Where have we let this country go?

    1. avatar Chip says:

We can’t tar and feather them any longer. Which I guess is OK because do you happen to have tar, or feathers, in your garage or tool shed?

That leaves us scorn and ridicule. Of which we must heap great piles of ridicule and scorn onto these people. We must point out at every opportunity the Nanny’s and Ninny’s and Idiot’s that think they know better than the rest of us. We must point and openly laugh at these people when they say “its for your own good.”

Openly laughing at this idiots is not as effective as a good tarring but if enough people point and laugh maybe they will take the hint.

      1. avatar Gtfoxy says:

Through the Idealistic “Tom Sawyer”, the rashness of the act of humiliation wash too much shown as “Un civilized” and shamefully cruel punishment. That is a transgression of intended thought processes.

The whole idea was not the sole purpose of humiliation, by the act of “Tar & Feathering”, but due to the close-knit nature of community at that time it was more a final means of casting out those found reprehensible to their Good nature.

It was reserved for those that were being judiciously expedited from living among them.

  6. avatar JoshtheViking says:

I have a friend who is a chemistry professor. This sounds like something he would say. On facebook, he responded to the fact that certain schools are getting bullet resistant white boards by saying, “It is better than turning our schools into armed camps.” I came within an inch of saying, “How is having a shield to hide behind while you wait for your turn to be blown to pieces better than being able to fight back?” Unfortunately, there is no arguing with idiots.

    1. avatar Chuck Pelto says:

      TO: JoshtheViking, et al.
      RE: Bullet Resistant White Boards

I wonder how many teachers and students can hide behind one of those.

Will their legs and hands be visible?

      RE: Armed Camp Campuses

An armed society is a polite society. — Robert A. Heinlein

P.S. I’ll bet that if a gunman came into that profs class, he’d use the bullet-resistant white board to cover his own lousy ass. And the students be damned…..

      1. avatar JoshtheViking says:

I agree entirely. The only effective defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

        1. avatar Jason says:

I would recommend two or three good guys (or more). That way they can provide cover, set up a crossfire, etc. to improve their chances of successfully neutralizing the bad guy, without suffering any casualties among the good guys or innocents.

      2. avatar Anonymous says:

“P.S. I’ll bet that if a gunman came into that profs class, he’d use the bullet-resistant white board to cover his own lousy ass. And the students be damned…..”

That’s absolutely true – I didn’t think about that. After the gunman has murdered all the students and teachers he can take down a whiteboard and position them in critical areas where he can shoot at incoming security guards or police before killing hiimself.

    2. avatar Chip says:

The bulletproof whiteboards themselves aren’t a bad thing, but those *instead of* having an armed presence at the schools makes no sense. Those *in addition to* an armed presence at the schools would be great. They could potentially give a teacher additional time to draw their firearm.

FYI, if anyone is interested, a company that makes those is actually in Maryland, of all places. The demo on YouTube shows one of their clipboards stopping not only high-powered handgun rounds but also a 12-gauge slug from a shotgun.

  7. avatar mediocrates says:

no kidding. these kinds of yokels should be stripped of their citizenship.

    RE: Heh

You’re a liar, a monster and an ‘enemy domestic’ of the Constitution of the United States.

[Here’s looking at YOU, kid….. — Humphrey Bogart]

  9. avatar MothaLova says:

It’s a relief to see so many pro-gun comments following the article.

There are some other local voices speaking up to challenge the silliness of mayors like the one in Fort Lee, such as the Golani Rifle & Pistol Club, quoted toward the end of the article:

Josh Levy, a member of the Golani Rifle and Pistol Club in Teaneck, said towns and cities were urging the adoption of bills without studying them or knowing what they’re about. Local officials also didn’t do enough to solicit citizen input before passing the resolutions, Levy said.

“What they’re doing is not only contrary to our right of self-defense and to the Constitution, but also to the spirit of self-government in which measures are proposed with time for debate and open discussion,” he said.

    1. avatar Roscoe says:

If a politician already knows what’s best for his constituents, and knows it’s a ‘common sense’ solution, why would he ask them for their input?

      1. avatar Jason says:

So he can maintain the charade that representative democracy is freedom?

        1. avatar MothaLova says:

Yes, exactly. It’s important to point out that gungrabbers are opposed to self-government as much as they are opposed to gun ownership.

  10. avatar Anmut says:

    “Dear morons;

The ends always justify the means to keep you safe. Now go sit back down and watch TV. And don’t forget to pay your taxes! (we mean it.)

  11. avatar Taylor Tx says:

The Constitution shall not be outweighed. Precisely the type of domestic enemy to watch out for.

    1. avatar Old Ben turning in grave says:

Absolutely, and at least he’s done America the courtesy of clearly identifying himself.

  12. avatar James says:

Does this mean he supports racial profiling Muslims or others of arab descent or black young men showing signs of gang affiliation? If it stops a rash of violence…….? Sadly, this is SOP for a liberal. Waive the bloody shirt and accuse those that do not agree of wanting children to die.

    1. avatar MothaLova says:

Great point. Lefties never like thinking about the logical implications of what they say.

  13. avatar Ross says:

If he took an oath of office he just violated it, Rights are Rights, not maybe’s or possibilities but Rights.

    1. avatar Chuck Pelto says:

These blackguards are ALWAYS violating their oaths.

Chuck, you deviated from your traditional formatting. How could you do that? How could you?

[Here’s looking at YOU, kid….. — Humphrey Bogart]

        1. avatar Chuck Pelto says:

As if I’m required by Law to keep formating?

Who made you the ‘Format Nazi’? Seinfeld?

        2. avatar DisThunder says:

Try to bring it. I’ve got better…..

[.45 cal…..because it’s just silly to shoot someone twice.]

  14. avatar Chris says:

A couple dozen personal tragedies does not supplant my rights. Sorry.

  15. avatar Russ Bixby says:

Something which occurred in another state, and with which I was in no way involved outweighs my rights.

    Interesting legal principle, that.

  16. avatar Soccerchainsaw says:

These anti gunners just don’t get that they have helped to create the environment that gives power to the criminal and criminally insane by serving up a victim rich society.

    1. avatar Old Ben turning in grave says:

Oh, I rather think many of them know perfectly well what they are doing. Keeping themselves in power, and their snouts in your pantry, by means that have worked pretty well throughout history.

      1. avatar William Burke says:

        I agree.

  18. avatar Mamba says:

So, according to Mayor Mark we only have rights until someone arbitrarily perceives them to be wrongs. Got it.
BTW, no big surprise to find that this guy is a MAIG member.

  19. avatar AF says:

You always have that issue about imposing on people’s privacy, but the rash of terrorism, including the Benghazi episode, just so outweighs those rights

Surely he supports the rubber glove treatment too, right?

  20. avatar DisThunder says:

He must’ve watched some History Channel this week, this is policy by Reichstag fire 101!
Seriously, we do need some better laws in this country. Like, for example, if you’re an elected official, and you say something this inflammatory or stupid, it shouldn’t be considered a form of assault if one of your constituents punches you in the face.

    1. avatar Jason says:

In ancient Rome, tyrannicide was a justifiable form of homicide.

      1. avatar MothaLova says:

I assume you’re talking about the early years of the Republic. Is Livy your source for that statement?

    2. avatar Chuck Pelto says:

      TO: Sis Bumper
      RE: As If?

I don’t watch Cops nor the History Channel.

But I CAN recoconize an leftist tool when I see it. And, if necessary ‘deal with it’—as in ‘out— when I encounter it.

      You know fools like you.

      [The Truth will out…..]

  21. avatar flyboy says:

The problem with his statement is that U.S. Constitution says that “the rash of violence” DOES NOT “just so outweigh” my rights.

  22. avatar Jake says:

You are just like so incorrect mister jersey mayor man

  23. avatar SdubM45 says:

Hey,Mr.North Jersey mayor guy, since when did inalienable rights take a back seat to sensational news stories. Oh sorry I forgot we now live in The Peoples Republic of Barackastan. All hail the glorious leader!

  24. avatar DerryM says:

@Mark Sokolich, My Right to defend myself, my Family, my fellow Americans and my Country outweighs your right to insist that your School Children be left undefended Jihadist Terrorist and “looney fodder”. End of discussion. But if you’d like to FOADIAF I’ve got a gallon of gasoline and some strike anywhere matches I’ll send you to help you along.

@TTAG Commenters, Does this straddle the balance of scornfully pointing-out his idiocy and tossing some mean-spirited venom his way? Just working on “sharpening the saw”….

  25. avatar Jeh says:

Clearly this guy isn’t mentally fit to hold office, or do just about anything. How is it always these kind of people that get elected? Do we even elect anymore? If only Washington could rise from the dead and beat some sense into him.

    1. avatar CyborgCowboy says:

I vote for thorough background checks on anyone running for political office, including mental health records!

  26. avatar Chas says:

I don’t even have the words to express how TIRED I am of STUPID POLITICIANS who don’t have a CLUE about the Constitution and just don’t seem to care.

    It’s revolting.

  27. avatar RockThisTown says:

In this guy’s mind(?), the rash outweighs the rights only because he’s got his thumb on the scales.

Mayor Sokolich, just what did you take an oath to uphold & defend if not the U.S. Constitution?

  28. avatar Jason says:

Why are so many people surprised by this sort of statement? Or by the fact that he applies this only to guns, not racial profiling, cars, etc? The power elites and their republicrat stooges have an agenda. They’ve had the same agenda for about a century now. It is to strengthen the central state and make everyone a vassal to DC, while they pick the carcass. One of the core requirements of this plan is civilian disarmament. They will push it at any opportunity. If they make even one baby step, it’s a victory.

    1. avatar MothaLova says:

If anyone is surprised, it’s because almost no one in the two major parties talks plainly about the Left’s goals. Many folks just aren’t used to hearing the unvarnished truth.

      1. avatar Old Ben turning in grave says:

Of course. If you question anything your ruling class does, you are an anti-government extremist/racist/homophobe/sexist (add your own pejoratives to the list). Best response is to laugh out loud in their faces when they do this instead of acting cowed. Amazing how leftists just don’t know how to handle that.

  29. avatar Gtfoxy says:

“You always have that issue about imposing on people’s rights, but the rash of violence, including the Sandy Hook episode, just so outweighs those rights.”

Is it acceptable if the right wasn’t the 2nd Amendment being discussed, but yet, say, the Right to vote?

  30. avatar Roadrunner says:

On the bright side, he’s admitting he has no qualms about violating the Constitution, violating fundamental rights, and breaking his oath of office. Maybe he’ll one day be honest enough to admit that the evil and the insane are sorry reasons to violate the rights of everyone else. In fact, the evil and the insane are the reason for the right to bear arms.

  31. avatar Pat says:

Dumb commie libtard (democrat) lunatics. Lets all just skip and dance to the showers…in the name of the children, because our superior ‘Big Gov’ overlords told us to. It really is for the best. They are so much smarter and more efficient than us. They would never lie, right? Who needs God when you have Big Brother and its statist supporters taking care of you.
