Dashcam Video: Shooting in Oaklandistan

I could make the usual points about the non-link between gun control and reducing violent crime. Or I could wonder, as TTAG reader Pascal did, why the kid with the backpack seems non-plussed. But I’d like to know why the driver thought it a good idea to drive straight through the line of fire. On the other hand, watch the video to the end and you’ll see an armed American doing it right: shoot as you run away. Move and shoot. Of course, this technique (taught by gun guru Rob Pincus) should only be used as a last resort. Firing indiscriminately is a gang banger’s modus operandi. Not that the black guy in the white T-shirt escaping aeration was a criminal. Perish the thought! He was just defending himself, as are Oakland residents who can afford to hire private security [more info after the jump]. See how that works? Gun control is the great unequalizer . . .

  1. avatar Layne says:

“You need to take these guns out of their hands, and the only way you’re going to do it is right before you zip up their body bag”

Fixed that for you there pal. Stop and frisk doesn’t work.

  2. avatar CA.Ben says:

Another point of inquiry: the shooter fires 13 shots. In a state where the magazine size limit is 10 rounds.

Yeah, those gun control laws are definitely affecting criminals…

    1. avatar Jason says:

It’s probably a grandfathered magazine. And I’m sure those two gentlemen have CA concealed carry licenses and registered handguns.

      1. avatar Jarhead1982 says:

And spoons made Rosie O’Donnel fat!

        1. avatar freeport56 says:

        2. avatar Russ Bixby says:

They were a contributing factor — especially the silver ones.

      2. avatar neiowa says:

And “hoodies” with hood erect, in mid August afternoon in Californistan. Sorry racially profiling there. Not a very diverse group of citizens there was it?

        1. avatar Jus Bill says:

It was just a couple of Obama’s sons out for a day at the shooting range.

      3. avatar DonS says:

        “It’s probably a grandfathered magazine.”

Sure, if the shooter owned / possessed it before 1 January 2000. Somehow, I doubt that he did.

  3. avatar Andrew says:

I love it – the news story caption is “living among the lawless” – but anti-gun people push.. wait for it.. MORE LAWS.

    *insert head asploder here*

  4. avatar Jason says:

But I’d like to know why the driver thought it a good idea to drive straight through the line of fire.

The video said the fine, upstanding, hoodie-wearing gentlemen were shooting at the red car, which was passing the dash-cam car in the opposite direction.
If that is the case, the pillars of the community were probably sweeping their line of fire across the dash-cam car from front to rear, so moving forward might have been out of the line of fire.

    1. avatar Tom in Oregon says:

The driver of the car apparently only speaks Spanish? Maybe he’s from the cartel areas of Mexico, now living in a ‘sanctuary city’ and to him, it was just another day. Only they weren’t using long guns provided by fast and furious…

      1. avatar neiowa says:

Immediate action drill is to drive thru the ambush.

Likely anyone that lives thru Mexico leads young. Or doesn’t live. A civilian Dashcam? what is this Moscow?

      2. avatar Fred says:

Sounded like an Asian language, perhaps Korean. He’s probably a business owner and installed a dash cam to protect his company vehicle in case of an accident, that way he’d have evidence on camera. There was another report from California from another Asian man that captured a case of road rage on a dash cam that was installed for the same reason.

        1. avatar jwm says:

That’s what I thought. Asian. In spite of urban myth Oakland has a very diverse population.

        2. avatar Tom in Oregon says:

My bad. I have seriously cruddy speakers on my work PC.

        3. avatar Jus Bill says:

If he doesn’t speak English or Spanish, how did he get a CA driver’s license?

        4. avatar Jan says:

Reply meant for Jus Bil… when you can have a translator present in your immigration interview, anything is possible.

  5. avatar g says:

Aaaaaaaand sadly, that’s why most of my family in the Bay Area doesn’t live in Oakland anymore. I feel sorry for them that Cali’s ridiculous gun laws don’t make it easier to defend themselves, and their only recourse is to just move away to another Bay Area city.

  6. avatar RKBA says:

Nothing to do with TTAG, but I don’t watch videos with forced 30 second advertisements…. They do monitor how many users stop watching, and if enough of you refuse to watch the advertisement, they will remove them.

Or we can all be good little sheeple.

    1. avatar Julian says:

I watched both videos, no advertisements came up. Must be random.

      1. avatar William Burke says:

No ad for me, either. Thanks for that.

      2. avatar John Fritz says:

        No ad for me Sir.

        1. avatar Avid Reader says:

          Me neither!

  7. avatar mediocrates says:

This is Kalifornia… There should be some kind of labelling system so I can weed these stories out of my newsreader without having to waste my time for things I don’t care about.

  8. avatar jwm says:

Oakland does not have a single gun store. The walmarts in alameda county, which is were oakland is, do not sell guns or ammo. Alameda county is next to impossible to get a carry permit in unless you’re connected. I’m not connected. But Oakland really is the wild west, as pictured by Hollywood.

The man in the white shirt was shooting back so he wasn’t arrested? It’s almost a sure bet that he had no permit. He was firing and got a pass. I was not firing but I also got a pass for not having a permit. In Alemeda county, which covers a lot of territory, this is not an unheard of thing. But it would be nice to have the permit and there’s no valid reason not to issue to people with clean records.

    1. avatar CA.Ben says:

And in spite of everything you pointed out, legislator Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) is pushing for a new law that would undermine California’s gun licensing and registration pre-emption, allowing the City of Oakland to institute more restrictive firearms laws than those of the state.

  9. avatar mike says:

I think they need to differentiate between the real west and the west that they showed in the movies. Big shootout with people on the roofs and the whole town being killed did not happen often if at all. I have a feeling it was way more peaceful then what we have now.

    1. avatar Chris Mallory says:

Northfield MN and Coffeyville Kansas were two towns where the whole citizenry came out to defend the town from outlaws.

      1. avatar jwm says:

And because thse type of events were so rare outside of Saturday Matinee’s they are still talked about over 120 years later.

    2. avatar Russ Bixby says:

So was Boston MA, once or twice upon a time.

  10. avatar Ralph says:

“Right now, you’re thinking what I’m thinking. Why oh why didn’t I take the blue car.”

  11. avatar Mick says:

The lady in one video has spent $10,000 on security, she’d be better off to spend less then a $1000 on a good gun and add to her own personal sense of security and well being by home carrying in spite of the Calif. laws. Better off to shoot back then just being a complacent target…

  12. avatar c4v3man says:

Ban gang shootings and watch the homicide rate fall. Oh wait…

Maybe instead of getting guns off the streets, you should get “hired” guns off the streets?

  13. avatar Anmut says:

That amount of scary rhetoric in that news report is incredible. Self defense is bad? The only way to eliminate crime is to stop, frisk and confiscate firearms?

I just came in from outside and I was pretty sure the flag in my yard wasn’t red with a hammer and sickle.

  14. avatar Mike B says:

and… no one would have cared to air this a yr ago. this is pretty much every ghetto in the country.

  15. avatar Loaded Diaper says:

The Raiders were missing a couple of players from training camp last week. I think they found them!

  16. avatar Tom RKBA says:

The right side of the video is covered by the righthand column. It is too wide and makes the article text too narrow. UGH!

    1. avatar Russ Bixby says:

Yup. You. And me. And many.

Sucks, and in no peasant way.

  17. avatar Chris Mallory says:

“Firing indiscriminately is a gang banger’s modus operandi.”
Especially if you consider cops to be nothing more than overpaid gang bangers.

    1. avatar Russ Bixby says:

Underpaid. Them gold grills ain’t cheap.

  18. avatar NCG says:

Interesting that the Oakland cops seem to recognize the right to armed self defense, even if the state of Cali doesn’t. That, and I’m sure they’d rather not have to arrest armed kids who fully expect to die at any moment. Much more fun to beat up on unarmed hippie Occupy protestors (which they did quite enthusiastically) than to actually protect citizens from dangerous criminals.

I think this is the future – the cops are being militarized by DHS to deal with civil unrest, not crime, so crime will flourish, and those who can afford to will hire private security. I’m sure mercenaries private security contractors with contracts to protect the wealthy from everybody else will always be allowed to have nice guns (like Blackwater with select-fire M4s in N.O. after Katrina).

One thing about all these young, mostly black nihilists with guns – imagine if these guys actually got politicized and even half-assed organized? There’s a lot of historical overlap between gangsters and revolutionary organizations – IRA, PLO, choose your three letter initials.

  19. avatar Russ Bixby says:

“Wild wild west mentally Oakland.” not mentality; mentally.

    First, she’s an idiot.

Second, most of the problems in Калифорния are directly attributable to mind set.

  20. avatar Russ Bixby says:

“He’s going to go to that intersection and see if he can find those two individuals…”

Yeah, they’ll stick around for that. Sure.

I can’t blame the OPD for leaving the gangs alone, though; armed gangsters are dangerous.

It’s much easier and safer to backshoot unarmed non-gangsters who they’ve got face down on the pavement.

Next up, the Oakland PD will have a helicopter citizenry hunt, what with turnabout being fair play.
