Schadenfreude Alert: Caryn McBride Gets the Pink Slip

You don’t remember Caryn? She is was the editor of the Rockland County Journal Register who decided, in the wake of Newtown, that outing legal gun owners was the responsible thing to do. The paper then published the names and addresses of every registered gun owner in Rockland and Westchester counties in New York via an interactive map. Sure, you remember now. Gun owners weren’t pleased because they became targets for thieves looking for firearms. Non-gun owners weren’t pleased because burglars knew the houses to knock over where they’d be less likely to meet serious resistance. At least one burglary was tied to the printed list. Figuring turnabout is fair play, competitor printed Journal Register employees’ addresses and contact info. Threats against the paper caused its publisher to hire armed guards. Under withering criticism, the paper finally pulled the map . . .

Two months ago, the White Plains-based newspaper admitted that the information it published was badly outdated. The paper acknowledged many people had a dot on their house, indicating there was a gun permit at that address, even though they didn’t own a gun.

Now is reporting that McBride was among a group of Journal Register employees tossed by publisher Janet Hasson in yet another dead tree publication bloodletting. No one’s saying whether or not the address kerfuffle – which made the Journal Register a target of ridicule from coast to coast – played into the decision to can her. But it couldn’t have helped.

In these difficult times when job can be scarce, particularly in print media, maybe the Armed Intelligentsia will want to take up a collection to help Ms. McBride through this difficult time. Or not.

This is why it is important not to register your guns – Because you become a target on a map. A target to criminals looking to take your weapons and a target to liberal progressives looking to take your weapons.
