Is MAIG Using New York City Taxpayers’ Funds?

MAIG spokesman and city employee John J McCarthy (courtesy

You want to schmooze with the press guy for The Mayors Against Illegal Guns? Contact camera shy John J. McCarthy via Mayor Bloomberg’s office. The gun grabber’s gun grabber is a Bloomberg staffer (who recently received a 20 percent salary hike). Speaking of sucking on the taxpayer tit to promote civilian disarmament, TTAG reader AR points out that “If you perform a search from the MAIG website, you’ll see the url is changed to This is the same search appliance used for I would assume NYC funding is supporting the search and indexing of the MAIG website. Administration of the Google Search Appliance is most likely being performed by NYC personnel or contractors too.” True story? Again, we’ve contacted MAIG for comment. Again, keep breathing . . .

  1. avatar Ike says:

All of us need to be asking (again and again) each and every MAIG member how much official time and taxpayer funds are being used for MAIG purposes – and then watch them closely. We also need to be asking the city council members to make each mayor be accountable for every second they spend on MAIG business!

We didn’t elect these jerks to lobby against us!

I saw the same thing, and it is in the same subnet, only the last octet is different and not by that much. I am willing to bet it is in the same rack as well. My question is how illegal is this?

    2. avatar Daniel Silverman says:

On a follow up MAIG is considered at least in part as a 501c3 tax exempt organization. That would certainly make it wrong to host on government servers.

  3. avatar Pulatso says:

A politician inapropriately using the resources of their office to further partisan causes? No way! NOT IN OBAMA’S AMERICA!

  4. avatar Ralph says:

You guys just don’t understand. Bloomberg owns NYC, so he can do whatever he wants. NYC has been bought and paid for, just like Colorado.

  5. avatar EagleScout87 says:

So when he says he’s going to spend HIS money, he means NYC’s money… good to know.

  6. avatar dwb says:

isnt this illegal? paging all lawyers.

  7. avatar Pascal says:

They are no fan of Bloomberg and have pounded his office for waste numerous times over the years and keep a NYS debt clock which stands at $6.6 billion

  8. avatar Alex says:

I think “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” is offensive.

Shouldn’t it be “Mayors Against UNDOCUMENTED Guns”???

What part of SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED don’t they understand???

    1. avatar JSIII says:

      +1 lol

  9. avatar Tim says:

Better question is how many NYC residents would even object to their tax dollars being used to fund a political cause against guns.

  10. NY has a false claims act (modeled after the federal act) that allows just about anyone to whistleblow on over billing the state, and share in the bounty:

Depending on the factual circumstances here, there might be claim.

  11. avatar BlinkyPete says:

Ya’ll should send this to media contacts, most notably Fox. They’d be most likely to investigate, and anything that distracts them from their daily neocon yapping is ok by me.

    1. avatar Daniel Silverman says:

I don’t have a direct email for Fox, but I did send this out. Also I have a friend heading to DC to speak with pro 2A legislators on Capital hill. I can tell you she will inform them of this!!!!
Mikey aint got now where to run now… We have also reached out to Landmark legal foundation, Larry Pratt, and others. If it is not legal he is gonna have issues.

      1. avatar AR says:

Have you heard anything on this?

  12. avatar Bruce says:

Wonder if MAIG is a tax free organization? Perhaps the IRS should be investigating them. Most tax free’s are not allowed to be political.

  13. avatar CrankyBuddha says:

NSLOOKUP on resolves to the IP address and the hostname which would mean this site is hosted on a server for the city of NY.

  14. avatar mark_anthony_78 says:

    Well, of course!

You didn’t expect Bloomberg to get rich by giving all of his money to Go Daddy for his own domain space, did you?

  15. avatar CrankyBuddha says:

The HTML code on the main page references agency templates:
// Left Navigation Script for Agency Templates

    ” — START of–>”

    1. avatar Daniel Silverman says:

      Nice work Cranky!
I hope no one minds I am pulling all this information together. My DC person is on the phone as we speak.

      1. avatar CrankyBuddha says:

I’m not sure what you mean by that but if it works against the little New York Nazi I’m for it.

    2. avatar DeagleRevolver says:

The block is registered to The City of New York.

      1. avatar Daniel Silverman says:

There is no question this is being run on the same servers.

  17. avatar SAS 2008 says:

Is MAIG Using New York City Taxpayers’ Funds?

    Obviously yes.

    1. avatar My Name Is Bob says:

Yeah, obviously they are. A better question would be HOW MUCH of NYC taxpayer money is being used? (Obviously, too much!!!)

  18. avatar CrankyBuddha says:

Don’t forget that some MAIG mayors were using city dollars to fund lobbyists for the group. Here’s a link to a blog on the subject:
Other sites reported this as well.

  19. avatar TeutonicTenifer says:

I love seeing everyone get together in the comments to hoist Bloomberg.

Gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

  20. avatar AFriend says:

MAIG has it’s own EIN number and is registered with the IRS as a 501C4 non-profit. So, isn’t having the website hosted on city property illegal?

What’s even more interesting is that MAIG’s Form 990 ( ) shows it paid 81,240 for the website and it also is depreciating the cost of the website over 3 years.

  21. avatar Pat says:

Was if Jefferson who said that using a mans money to fund something he abhors is the ultimate form of tyranny?

  22. avatar Joseph B Campbell says:

I guess Bloomberg got tired of spending his own money so he took a page out of Obamasamas book and taking it from “US”.

  23. avatar Daniel Silverman says:

Yes we are starting to see the media report on this after two flippin months. And did they even mention us? NO!
Things that make you go hmmm:
The Truth About Guns and myself ran to ground the story on the MAIG using NYC servers on May 15th. After trying to get the word it took two months and now it seems to be breaking into the more main stream media. Amazing!

  24. avatar Gregg says:

Sounds like embezzlement of NYC funds to me. IMHO
