“A 12-year-old girl took matters into her own hands during a home invasion in southeast Oklahoma. It happened on Wednesday when the girl was home alone. She told police a stranger rang the doorbell, then went around to the back door and kicked it in.” Kendra St. Clair called her mother when 32-year-old Stacey Jones started pounding on the door. Her mom have her three directives in the right order: get the family gun, hide in the closet and call 911 . . .

We’ve all heard time and again that when seconds count the cops are only minutes away. The during those minutes, the intruder made his way through the house. Kendra told deputies the man came into the room where she was hiding and began to open the closet door. That was when the 12-year-old had to make a life-saving decision.

“And what we understand right now, he was turning the doorknob when she fired through the door,” said the Bryan County Undersheriff Ken Golden.

The bullet hit the intruder, who deputies identified as 32-year-old Stacey Jones. He took off but did not get far before officers took him down.

Jones was taken to Bryan County Jail after being released from the hospital and is being charged with first-degree burglary. Kendra was unhurt. Though probably horrifying gun grabbers nationwide, this 12-year-old girl knew how to handle a gun and it may have saved her life. How great is that?

  1. I don’t recommend firing through a door. Pretty hard to verify that your target is a so-called “bad guy” and not a loved one…. or a cop. unless of course there is more to the story that we are being told.

    • I posted the link to the story. She was on the phone with 911 the whole time. So, there was no doubt who was trying to get in.

Article quote: “Police say St. Clair did exactly what she should have done.”

    • Kicking down the front door is plenty of justification for a reasonable fear of danger, especially for a 12 year old girl.

    • Her firing through the closet door stood out to me as well. Ideally, you’d want to identify the target before shooting. But that’s just me Monday morning quarterbacking. The bottom line is, bad guy got an extra hole and is in-custody, and little girl is safe and sound.

      • So after reading an ariticle about a 12 year old girl successfully and justly defending herself AFTER trying to retreat and being persued, you are saying she should not have been allowed access to the a gun? Seriously? Sometimes I think you say these things just to piss people off.

      • So in your delusional world, you would feel better if the girl didn’t have access to the firearm and was now in the morgue after being raped. What kind of sick monster are you?

        • Mike has a point. What kind of negligent parent leaves their gun as a babysitter. Not to mention, most of those kids you see shooting up schools and movie theaters had access to their parents guns… ignorant hillbilly gun owners. 1. The kid shouldn’t have been left alone. 2. This is just another story to wet the panties of right-wing nut-job gun owners as a clutch for legalized gun possession. A 16+ year old.. ok, but a 12 year old? How many stories of young teenagers injuring themselves or others are you ignorant rednecks ignoring?

    • Family rarely kick in the back door. Cops do on occassion, but they are supposed to yell, police, police. A family member kicking in the back door would reasonably begin shouting for their daughter.
A door kicked in, silence, sounds of a search. Yeah……terrified girl in the closet should shoot through the door.
She done good….hell, she done great.

      • It’s the title of a song, by Lerner and Loewe, sung by Maurice Chevalier, in the 1958 film Gigi.

        Thank heaven for little girls
for little girls get bigger every day!

        Thank heaven for little girls
they grow up in the most delightful way!

Those little eyes so helpless and appealing
one day will flash and send you crashin’ thru the ceilin’

        Thank heaven for little girls
        thank heaven for them all,
no matter where no matter who
for without them, what would little boys do?

        Thank heaven… thank heaven…
        Thank heaven for little girls!

  2. Braver little girl than some of the men I’ve known. The dude she shot had already been arressted once before for messing with another girl. Sure glad this family ignored Mikeyb’s sage advice about guns.

  3. A 12 year old girl? What was she doing alone in a house with a gun that was obviously not unloaded and lock up separately from the ammo? And she didn’t kill herself or one of her little friends? Obviously not a true story. I know because the Brady Campaign tells me that children should never have access to guns, they always kill themselves or their friends.

    • It looks to me as thought the parents have thoroughly covered gun safety. Kudos to the 12 year old and kudos to her parents who taught her well.

I was a latch-key kid myself from about the age of eleven. I knew where the guns were, I knew how to load them and I knew how to shoot them.

Perhaps some pity for her as she now has to live with having shot another human being. While she did the right thing, it’s still a traumatic event.

  4. There is no doubt that if someone who meant her no harm would have called out to her immediately upon entering the house. Firing through the door was probably for the best. She might have had nightmares/a complex if she was looking at the face of the man she shot, or worse, hesitated.

  5. There was a boy,10-12 yo, that killed two intruders with his .22 rifle. Somewhere in the south I believe. Love it when these stories have a happy ending. The children were not victoms.

  6. I am glad this story has a happy ending. It is terrible that a scumbag put that girl in a position that she had to shoot him. I hope she recovers quickly from this ordeal.

  7. Read the story, the girl called her mother. Her mother told her what to do. I’m proud of her parents teaching her gun safety and how to use a gun. It may have ended differently if they didn’t do the right thing.

  8. A gun in all likelihood just saved a little girl from a very horrible experience. Where is Mikey#’s with his outrage on this story? Surely he can gin up some feelings of disgust at a 12 year old girl shooting a 32 year old man intruding in her house?

This is a story illustrating that having a gun and teaching everyone in your household how to use it is very important.

  9. Girls should always be taught to handle firearms safely. As should boys. This story’s outcome could have read differently had there been no firearm to her avail. Take heed parents. Incidentally, that’s my 12 year old in the pic.

  10. This is the sort of story that will only be an aberration to the greater truth that guns kill little girls – as reflected in the gun-grabbers mantra

  11. After reading this, I’m reconsidering whether to give my firearms-qualified offspring the combination to the long-gun safe. Perhaps in a sealed envelope after letting them practice opening it a few times, since they’re unlikely to remember it the next day.

Also: You know what you call an unloaded shotgun with no ready ammo? A club.

  12. After watching the interview footage I was really impressed with the hole placement on the door – just above and inside of the doorknob – Good Job!

  13. Control freaks constantly tell us that they’re concerned about safety. Fine. Where are the calls for keeping a violent and predatory thug like this piece of work off the streets? He was already arrested for kidnapping a mentally disabled teenage girl. Perhaps he’s awaiting trial, but when the evidence is good, that’s a case for holding the accused without bail. This being his second time at least, he shouldn’t have been flown in a helicopter for medical care. Toss him in the back of a pickup truck and drive down some country roads to the local large animal vet.
