After some encouraging recent examples of cops who get it, along comes Martin Golden. That’s what we get for reading the New York papers. He’s an ex-NYPDer and current New York state senator (R-Brooklyn). As dailynews.com reports, he told a local radio station, “The gun control is an interesting aspect, but what we have to really look at is putting regulation on the people who use illegal guns here in the city and state of New York” . . .
His bold, innovative stance is certainly understandable – and long overdue – given that guns and gun crime have been wholly unregulated in the Empire State for so long now. It’s really been a glaring oversight on the part of city and state lawmakers. Visitors from other parts of the country are routinely shocked by the way virtually anyone can stroll into a hardware store, corner bodega or newsstand in the Big Apple today and walk out with a sawed off shotgun or full-auto pistol.
But a few more gun laws, as the Senator is proposing, are surely just what the doctor ordered to finally break the backs of New York’s street gangs and drug traffickers.
He cited a ranking from a leading gun control advocacy group showing that New York already has the fourth-toughest gun control laws in the country.
“Can we do more? Obviously,” he said.
Unfortunately, about all that’s left in terms of untried additional gun control measures in NYC is summary execution on sight. But the Senator apparently didn’t elaborate as to what “more” gun control measures he has in mind. New Yorkers will surely find out soon enough.
I am sure Bloomy will extend stop and frisk to anyone who remotely looks Black or Hispanic, including those of E. Asian descent as well as anyone from NJ with a tan.
next step is completely banning guns. stop and frisk for all and locking down apartment blocks and searching room by room. welcome to the grabbers paradise.
Don’t give Bloomberg any more ideas. He is a man who read 1984 as a How-To manual and not a warning. I am 90% sure if he could put metal detectors on street corners he would.

Perhaps he meant the following as in a crime deterrent form of gun control:
“The senator called on the Assembly to pass legislation to increase prison time for those who use illegal guns to commit crimes or in homes where there is a child 14 or younger. He also wants to toughen penalties on gang members who share “community” guns used in crimes.”
Kind of like fruit flies, I suppose, as long as there’s a corridor connecting the free states of New England to the rest of the United States.

It’s only a matter of time before that which is hyperbole today is a fact tomorrow. All oppressive tyrannies eventually get to that stage, why would this one be any exception?
After reading about it in History class all those years a go, it is kind of interesting to actually watch it unfold. To see large groups of people willingly give up their true freedoms for some false sense of security and community.
In a sad, depressing sort of way I watch.
Nothing like making something more “illegaler”. That always works. Since criminals obey so many existing laws why not pass another they’ll ignore then pat yourself on the back and deny all reality that you actually made a difference.
As a resident NYer not clouded by the fog of irrationality that pervades the air here, I still stand by my theory that (one of) the best thing(s) that can be done to bring NYers around to their senses is to release 500 feral hogs into Central Park. Mess with their precious open space and they’ll call for roving gangs of AR-15-wielding citizens patrols
As for human life, I am not so sanguine. They’ll tolerate horrific crimes til the cows come home before they let some gal like the one who got gang raped in Central Park carry a piece.

I live in NYC and this is one of the most entertaining if insane ideas I have heard for kicking some sense into this place. That’d be something to see, just one coyote was bad enough. I received my own kick in the pants as far as situational awareness walking across the Columbia campus early one morning before work, just tooling along texting then BAM I am staring down a frikkin coyote. Back away slowly…. normal day in NY.
Just a bit more regulation, and NY could have streets as peaceful and placid as Chicago! Good times, good times.
Why am I so sure that NY’s solution to gun violence requires that I give up my guns 2,200 miles away? There’s a REASON I live so far from NYC, and it has nothing to do with the NW’s weird tax laws.

Even the best gun-control states could do more. That part is obvious. You just don’t like it.
About cops’ opinions on gun control, you guys love to keep telling each other that the rank and file are on your side, but I don’t believe it. You say the top brass is for gun control because they’re more politicians than cops, but that’s not true either. Many of them came up through the ranks.
Most cops, just like most civilians recognize that you gun-rights fanatics are just that, fanatics. Guns do more harm than good and no one knows this better than cops.

Enforcing the existing laws might or might not do something to combat crime. But to do that, the police would have to confront armed gangbangers. And they know that doing so is a losing proposition; the best outcome that could be hoped for is that a lot of cops end up dead.
The same is true of warm, fuzzy Italy: explain to us why the various “honorable societies” (Cosa Nostra, ‘Ndrangheta, Camorra, etc.) haven’t been forceably disarmed and disbanded yet.
Explain to us exactly how making something even MORE illegal does anything to curtail its use, Mike.

Here’s the skinny mate, science just isn’t with you. “Assault rifles” kill fewer people every year than bare hands in America. The vast majority of handgun homicides are not with the 11th round in the magazine (that’s “mah-gah-zeen”, learn it, love it). New York already has one of the strictest gun control regimes in the nation, it’s almost impossible to get a CCW there, so there aren’t any “cowboys” shooting up the subway like antis predicted would happen and never did in other states. Yet you call for more. I ask you, sir, what exactly do you propose? How will it work? Will it effect primarily criminals or just legal gun owners? What is the total possible effect? What is the total likely effect? Have you thought about unintended consequences? Bill S1427 PURPOSE: This proposed constitutional amendment would provide within the New York State Constitution for a right of the people to keep and bear arms for traditionally recognized purposes
Bill S1863 PURPOSE: This legislation would remove a gun licensing officer’s ability to deny or restrict the issuance of licenses to law abiding citizens who have successfully undergone the state’s strict application process and appropriate New York State and Federal Bureau of Investigations fingerprint background check required under law. In addition, this bill will conform New York State law to current ATF requirements regarding background checks for firearms transfers.
