From the AP:

Gunfire at a backyard party killed two people and wounded 14 others early Saturday in Rochester, New York, a city that has been roiled in recent weeks by outrage over the suffocation death of Daniel Prude.

As many as 100 people were at the gathering when the shooting started just before 12:30 a.m., Acting Police Chief Mark Simmons told reporters.

Police were still trying to piece together who opened fire and why. Simmons said it was too early to say whether more than one person was shooting or whom the intended targets may have been.

A man and woman, estimated to be in their late teens or early 20s, were killed, Simmons said. Their names weren’t immediately released. The 14 wounded by gunfire were not believed to have life-threatening injuries.

The acting chief said no suspects were in custody.

“This is truly a tragedy of epic proportions,” Simmons said in a news conference held near the home. “I mean 16 victims is unheard of, and for our community, who’s right now going through so much, to have to be dealt with this tragedy, needlessly, for people who decide to act in a violent manner is unfortunate and shameful.”

The shooting comes as the city in Western New York has been rocked by protests over Prude’s death, caused when Rochester police officers put a hood over his head to stop him from spitting, then pushed his face into the pavement and held him down until he stopped breathing. The details of Prude’s death only emerged this month, leading to allegations of a coverup and calls for the arrests of the officers involved.

On Monday, the city’s mayor fired Police Chief La’Ron Singletary, who she said initially misled her about the circumstances of the March death. Other senior police officials announced they would retire or leave top command positions.

The acting police chief, Simmons, expressed frustration that someone had held a large, late-night party amid that tumult, apparently in defiance of a state ban on large gatherings because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is yet another tragedy where individuals are having these illegal, unsanctioned house parties taking place in these properties, which — number one — is not safe because of COVID, because of the conditions,” Simmons said. “And then you add in alcohol and violence and it just becomes a recipe for disaster.”

Officers responding to calls of shots fired found “approximately 100 people” running from the scene, Simmons said. Before the call, police were not aware of the party and had received no complaints about noise, he said.

Pastor Marlowe Washington told WROC-TV: “Whoever was the host of this party needs to be held accountable for this.”

The wounded were being treated at local hospitals. Two more people were hurt while fleeing, the Major Crimes Unit said in a tweet. Despite the lack of arrests, Simmons said there was no reason to believe the neighborhood was unsafe.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren issued a statement asking for “prayers and support for all involved.”

“I’m begging everyone to remain calm and exercise deep restraint as RPD investigates what happened here and seeks those responsible,” she said.

        • Trump stop it ?? Just how? Rush to the rescue on a White Horse brandishing a flaming sword. How can a nation that year on year has 20,000, and counting victims, of GUN CRIME per year represent to be the MORAL leaders of the Civilised world. I cannot speak for the rest of the world but I can research some of it and so can you. Just ONE example because Trump as quoted the UK as being a very ‘dangerous place. In the UK in 2019 there were under 800 UNLAWFUL deaths including manslaughter [UK definition for manslaughter broadly speaking is unlawful cause without intent as distinct from MURDER which indicates intent] In the USA on a similar basis there were over 60, 000 Then there is the shame of PUBLIC executions which anybody can apply to witness There is a waiting list to witnes death by Lethal Injection Hanging, The Electric Chair and the Gas Chamber and the USA has the audacity to condemn the public execution by the sword. That is moral hypocracy of the highest order and we continue to wonder why the USA is held in such low regard aand whilst I do not have the temerity to condemn Capital Punishment per, sec. I do think that it should have moral considerations and PUBLIC WITNESS is NOT one of them.

      • What did you read in the article that makes you think they are lefties? Unless you read something elsewhere it would seem as though you are projecting your own thoughts onto these people. That said, even if they are lefties, to wish them dead is pathetic. I am about as conservative at it comes, and I am a 2nd amendment absolutist, but I with noone to be murdered. It is people like you that make it easy for the left to vilify the right.

      • How the hell do you know what the political persuasions of anybody at this party were. Typical bloodyn ignoramus who just assumes political indentity based on personal and ignorant prejudice Still what can you expect from a nation that elects an ignorant. mysogonist, narssisistic illiterat failed businessman as president. I will make America Great again? Yeh right! What he has done is to turn America into a bloody laughing stock

        • Wow! Give into your hate…it is so much easier than facing the facts.

How many businesses have you successfully started…or failed at?

My 401(k) and IRA were / are doing GREAT under Trump…even after China nuked the world with their virus the markets have recovered very well.

Minorities in the USA were experiencing the lowest poverty / highest employment levels for decades until the Communist Chinese unleashed their contagion and disrupted people and workplaces worldwide.

Speaking of illiterate…there is a final “e” in the word…if you’re going to throw stones, don’t surround yourself in glass.

  1. Im sure it will be an “illegal gun” that did the shooting, dont worry no need to hold an individual responsible. Everyone knows “illegal guns” hold supernatural powers when the sun goes down. “Illegal guns” start walking around on legs like a schoolhouse rock video.

  2. I’m surprised that there’s no mention about the ambush of AZ police officers by the 17 year old armed with an AK pistol from yesterday.
I know, I know—RBG passing probably captured all of the POTG attention.

  3. So now you gotta notify 5-O to throw a party in Rochester? 14 wounded? Only 2 dead? Sounds like the Chiraq school of marksmanship…

  4. You think about Rochester for a minute. Home of Kodak, Xerox, Bausch & Lomb and probably many other former heavyweight companies. This is what happens when a combination of technology changes, heavy unionization, outsourcing production to China, and Democratic Party tax and spend policies destroys a city. Mostly the poor, gangs and thugs left in the old city. Every old city and manufacturing town. Rochester on the way to becoming little Chicago.

  5. Attagreader is mostly right on that .

About half my career on the FD I worked out of a firehouse a hop, skip and jump from this shooting . In the 90’s we’d hear gunshots most nights, one year 5 people were shot to death in 3 shootings within 100 yards from the firehouse . I had hundreds of fires and shootings working there ,ah I’m getting all misty eyed now …..

Oh gatherings over 50 are not yet “ allowed” due to covid/Cuomo . Perhaps they were just trying to get the numbers down ?

    • Could be. I’m certainly no expert but went to the doc last week for a check up and asked him about “the rona” and he said he’d only seen 4 patients in 6 mos. Practice had seen 40+ but there’s 6 other doctors and this is in a metro county of 1 million + peoples. He seemed to think the reaction and response was over blown. I was shocked I tell ya, shocked.

  6. Obviously a call to defund the police.

Seriously folks, the above posts due to high tax/regulations preventing new jobs and mega outsourcing…

I’m also a vote for controlled substances, but why not mention releasing so many fellons for a bad cold. Yes, a very bad cold, but NY did this to itself.

    • We emptied a lot of prisons largely by February the most violent came around early April for the releases and crime ticked up all through the year.

  7. Just paint BLM in bright, large yellow letters in the middle of that road and everybody will come to their senses and live happily ever after.

  8. One, now we not only need a government permission slip for our second amendment rights, but for our first as well? How does one get a private house party sanctioned? This is blood boiling on all levels.
It’s a shame that people could not get together at a party and not shoot each other, but as other’s comments have pointed out, seems to be a party for liberals. When they get together, seems that the inevitable outcome is bad one way or another.

  9. “Trump, who is literally Adolf Hitler, literally pulled the trigger of an illegal assault weapon with a high-capacity clip that killed 2 and wounded 14 in Rochester, NY”

Is that the headline the MSM is looking for? I’d ask for payment, but the Lefties would just steal it and threaten to burn down my house if I took them to court because social justice.

  10. Illegal, unsanctioned?!!??

Since when do citizens need Governmental permission to have a party??

THAT STATEMENT is the most alarming thing about this story.

  11. Had there been a Government Sanctioned Sign present it would have saved lives like a Gun Free Zone Sign saves lives…right.mini mike bloomberg et al.

  12. “14 Wounded, 2 Dead at ‘Illegal, Unsanctioned House Party’ in Rochester, NY”

“Unsanctioned” by whom? The government? Is it now the job of the government to issue approval for a party?

  13. Just watched the press conference. The Capt of major crimes, said , “ if I hear one more politician say we need more gun laws , I’m going to vomit ! Do us a favor and keep your mouth closed, as you have no idea of what your talking about . Every night we arrest people with illegal handguns, and due to bail reform ,they’re back on the streets the next morning, with no consequences.”

He then went on , “ Ive been involved in hundreds of homicide investigators, know how many were with legal handguns? “ , “ none “.

When you have 30 years on you can speak freely.

It appears this was a couple of warring factions just shooting at each other in a crowed yard, and only bystanders hit .

  14. gang shit

if you wonder how everytown et all come up with the ‘mass shootings’ they do, this is it. Yet they only talk about the school shootings and Vegas shooting where it was white men using AR15s. Strange.
