Gun Review: Walther CCP

I love the Heckler & Koch P7, as it offers so many engineering features to geek out over. Some of those features appeared on a handgun for the first time with the P7, only to become ubiquitous thereafter (3-dot sights, for example*). A few of those great features have never been reproduced on another pistol. One of them is the gas-piston delayed blowback system, which hasn’t seen use again until the Walther CCP here** and its resurrection is a big reason why I was so excited to get my hands on this new Walther Concealed Carry Pistol. Does it deliver on Walther’s promises of soft recoil and easy slide manipulation? . . .

Gun Review: Heckler & Koch VP9

HK is no stranger to striker-fired pistols, but it’s been a while since they’ve designed a new one — close to four decades. With the VP9 hot off the presses, the wait is over and Heckler & Koch has reentered the striker-fired handgun market. This bad boy is sort of like a cross between HK’s own P30 and Walther’s PPQ, with a trick or two of its own thrown in for good measure . . .

Budget EDC For CCW: Benchmade HK ‘Soldat’, ‘Plan D’

It’s okay to be dubious about gun-branded knives, especially when they’re a backup to your gun-branded gun. Plenty of smart gunnies carry Smith & Wesson handguns, but the S&W knives you see at gun shows are just garbage. Heckler & Koch makes particularly nice handguns if you have the means, but they’re no stranger to the term ‘badge engineering,’ either. Luckily, the boys from Oberndorf are pretty finicky when it comes to their manufacturing partners . . .

Gun Review: HK USP Tactical .45

You don’t have to be a Navy SEAL to know that the H&K MK23 is one bad ass pistol. But it helps. It also helps when it comes to owning one. Navy SEALs pay for theirs in blood, sweat and tears. Uncle Sam gets a deal. Civilians need to shell-out some $2,300 or thereabouts for the privilege. Truth be told, I’m no more likely to buy a H&K MK23 than Kerry McGregor is to go swimming in an old gunny sack. So, the H&K USP Tactical then, a more affordable offshoot of the MK23 development program . . .

Book Review: The Last Patriot by Brad Thor

[HTML 1]

Let’s get right to the point. The Last Patriot, a thriller by Brad Thor, is the most ridiculous book I’ve read in my adult life with the possible exception of Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi, which I read to my children when they were toilet training. The book was so impossibly bad that I could not put it down. It was like watching a clown car accident – every time the paramedics would pull a dead clown from the wreckage they would find another, and another, and another… Anyway, for all its faults, The Last Patriot managed to both top the New York Times Bestseller list and be banned in Saudi Arabia. As a result of death threats Thor received after this book was published, WorldNetDaily dubbed the author “the new Salmon Rushdie.” Now that’s offensive.
