The Democrats’ Gun Control Message Hasn’t Changed in Half a Century – Quote of the Day

courtesy pbs.org

“The voices that blocked these safeguards were not the voices of an aroused nation. They were the voices of a powerful lobby, a gun lobby, that has prevailed for the moment in an election year. But the key to effective crime control remains, in my judgment, effective gun control. And those of us who are really concerned about crime just must–somehow, someday–make our voices felt.

“We must continue to work for the day when Americans can get the full protection that every American citizen is entitled to and deserves—the kind of protection that most civilized nations have long ago adopted. We have been through a great deal of anguish these last few months and these last few years—too much anguish to forget so quickly. So now we must complete the task which this long needed legislation begins. We have come a long way. We have made much progress–but not nearly enough.” – President Lyndon Baines Johnson in What LBJ Warned Allies in the Gun Control Debate After Robert Kennedy Was Assassinated [via historynewsnetwork.org]

  1. avatar Ironhead says:

Well seeing as how states and other countries with very strict gun control laws still have crimes committed with firearms, history has proven you wrong.

    1. avatar Lost Down South says:

Also…if JKF’s assassination is the nexus for all gun control…how about releasing ALL the documents and evidence, not just some, to support your case.

The “other” docs might support disarming a government. Or two.

      1. avatar Dan says:

For modern gun control efforts, yes. The real evil began with the Gun Control Act of 1934.

    2. avatar 41mag says:

LBJ’s “War on Poverty” has been a woeful failure…just like all Gun Control laws

  2. avatar Chip Bennett says:

RFK was killed using an 8-shot revolver. Today, a revolver is all we’d be lucky to have, if the #NeverAgain fascist youth get their way.

The gun-control statists not only haven’t wavered in their message, but that message still suffers from the same, fatal flaw: nothing that they propose in response to some shooting would have had any impact whatsoever in preventing that shooting.

    1. avatar Gov. William J Le Petomane says:

They’ll be coming for the revolvers too.

    2. avatar 300BlackoutFan says:

Just keep reminding everyone that a (double action) revolver is a semi-automatic firearm. Replace ‘magazine’ with ‘cylinder’.

      1. Don’t even say that as a joke because, the gun is not semi-automatic. It does no actions for you. Your physical energy is required for every action of the gun. Say that and some moron politician will believe it. Like the idiot who thinks high capacity magazines turn a semi-automatic into an automatic.

    3. avatar Grump says:

The goal is a gun free society, period. Anything less is a stepping stone to the goal, anyone who claims it not is a liar.

      1. No, the goal is a society controlled by a govt whose agents are the only ones with guns.

        1. avatar Green Mtn. Boy says:

The dancing FBI agent as a example perhaps.

      2. avatar Chip Bennett says:

The goal is a gun free society, period.

Perhaps a gun-free citizenry. But both the State and criminals will always have guns – and with a disarmed citizenry, the former quickly becomes the latter.

        1. avatar TrappedInCommiefornia says:

The former have been the latter for longer than most of us have been alive, they just have to pretend they’re not until they can disarm the peas…. I mean, until they can pass gun reform to protect their constituents.

      3. avatar Green Mtn. Boy says:

The gun-control statists, mainly through the Commiecrat party has always been about the total prohibition of firearms right down to soda straws and spit wads, always have always will.

    4. avatar Cliff H says:

It has been fairly well documented, although not much covered by the MSM, that RFK was killed by TWO 8-shot .22 LR pistols, one from in front (Sirhan) and one from behind (hotel security guard, now “missing”)

But it is hard to see how any SCOTUS could decide that 8-shot .22 revolvers are suitable for militia use. If the Libs want to keep claiming the militia clause dominates they will have to deal with that conundrum.

      1. avatar Indiana Tom says:

The militia is the National Guard in their little minds. So no guns for mere civilians.

      2. avatar Toni says:

Militia and Military are two totally different and separate entities.

Military is govt controlled and funded be it at state or federal level. This means that National guard which is state level is Military.

Militia however is the people themselves joining together to train. They cannot do this without the right to keep and bear arms of all types including everything the military has access to.

The MSM and govt try to confuse the 2 so that people think it means the govt controlled military when it does not and the FF would roll over in their graves to hear it used such

  3. avatar Toni says:

yep so very wrong on so many levels. should have been hung for treason. there are many more of them that need to be as well.

  4. avatar TrueBornSonofLiberty says:

“It is no longer enough to be willing to fight and die to preserve our rights, one must be willing to kill for them, too”. IST

  5. avatar Gov. William J Le Petomane says:

Maybe a bit of a nuance, but they no longer pretend to care about ‘crime’ anymore, only ‘gun violence’. And to pad their numbers they use ‘gun deaths’ and ‘gun violence’ interchangeably so as to count suicides which account for 2/3 of ‘gun deaths’ as ‘gun violence’, i.e. violent crime. LBJ’s opinion could be construed as well intentioned but naive, as g un control has nothing to do with crime rates or violent crime rates. The message today is just plain dishonest, agenda driven propaganda.

    1. avatar Ed Schrade says:

And instead of “protectors of the second amendment” it’s ” gun lobby”. Maybe we should re-label their gun safety protests and call them Communists Against Americans Rights Movement. Maybe even the Socialists Against Civil Rights Movement.

      1. avatar Green Mtn. Boy says:

That’s what they are, I’m a believer in truth in advertising.

    2. avatar James A. "Jim" Farmer says:

My friend, LBJ’s intentions were anything but well meaning! Read my posted Tuesday,
September 27th, 2016 Klamath Falls Herald and News on this American (or should I
      say) un-American Lenin!

      1. avatar Gov. William J Le Petomane says:

I am aware that LBJ was not a well intentioned president, however his words, at least in this quote could be taken as an honest belief that g un control leads to lower crime to someone who wasn’t familiar with him. When the anti-2A crowd today throws out deliberately misleading statistics there can be no doubt about their dishonesty.

      2. avatar Indiana Tom says:

        LBJ was an evil statist.

  6. avatar The Rookie says:

You know, I *just* read that very quote on Saturday.

  7. avatar 300BlackoutFan says:

“We must continue to work for the day when Americans can get the full protection that every American citizen is entitled to and deserves”

Maybe we should use this quote against the gun-grabbers – after all, the 2nd amendment provides that ‘full protection’ that we are ‘entitled’.

Because disarming the freed slaves worked out so well, for the Democrats.

    1. avatar Joe R. says:

That’s cause, it was Republicans that did it. It was Conservative Republicans that fostered the Civil Rights movement in the late 40’s thru the 60’s, or they wouldn’t have gotten it done. MLK was a Republican, so was an overwhelming majority of his movement. https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2013/08/martin_luther_king_was_republican.html

Nice to see the DNC trotting out their old Klan buddy LBJ… because “the parties totally switched sides”… right?

    1. avatar Joe R. says:

No, the POS (D) has always endorsed slavery, and killing blacks.

  11. avatar dph says:

LBJ was one of the biggest D-bags presidents in history of the USA, and that’s saying something compared to some of the other assholes who have inhabited the White House.

    2. avatar Herb Allen says:

Look up the full text of `Landslide Lyndon’s’ remarks as he signed GCA ’68 into law. He was spitting mad that it didn’t include Federal registration of all firearms and licensing of owners and he let it show. LBJ had already renounced interest in getting renominated that year, and this was his parting shot.

It was the assassination of JFK five years earlier that jumpstarted today’s confiscation movement, and Johnson spent his entire Presidency hammering for gun control, and you feel his effect every time you fill out a 4473.

He croaked in 1973, not yet 65 years old. Karma’s a bitch.

    The Pox on Democrats.

  13. avatar pg2 says:

Except the the so-called right is changing its tune….when will people wake up and realize the 2 parties are the same?

    1. avatar Green Mtn. Boy says:

Correct, two different sides of the same corrupt coin.

      1. avatar Joe R. says:

Conservatives and Conservatism hasn’t changed. Neither is the fact that the POS (D) and rinos often attempt to briefly wear the mantle in order to obtain office and power.

All POS libs need to reap what they sew.

        1. avatar Green Mtn. Boy says:

Leftism is a disease,it can be infectious as many supposed conservatives have come down with it to a degree or another, thus the term RINO.

Vermonts governor,Benedict Scott,RINO, for example has a bad case of it and is going to face a primary challenger to rid Vermonters of his condition.

He was crude, lewd and unfit to hold the office of President….his big claim to fame was the escalation of the war in Vietnam…Although I respect the OFFICE of President, I had no respect for him then and I sure as hell don’t have any respect for him now! For a Texan he sure had stupid ideas about gun control!! Liberal hypocrisy at its finest!!

  17. avatar CalGunsMD says:

“…not the voices of an aroused nation. They were the voices of a powerful lobby, a gun lobby” That, right there is pure denialism. NRA Derangement Syndrome.

“the full protection that every American citizen is entitled to and deserves” – we have that protection to which “every American citizen is entitled to and deserves”. It’s called the US Armed Forces.

    1. avatar Joe R. says:

“the full protection that every American citizen is entitled to and deserves” – we have that it’s called the 2nd Amendment.

And if the (codified) 2nd Amendment should ever go away, there’s always two great heaping handfuls of “FU STUPID”.

FU STUPID is way over due for dishing out right now.

  18. avatar William Ashbless says:

LBJ was well known for speaking with staff and even reporters while taking a shit. Seriously, look it up.

    1. avatar TrappedInCommiefornia says:

I was reading about that recently. One account said he was on his ranch with a staffer or journalist and while walking about together LBJ stopped, whipped out his business and took a leak right where he stood. He was also known for harassing female staff and making racist comments. He makes Trump look classy by comparison.

      1. avatar Joe R. says:

Trump makes D.C. (and most State houses) in the U.S., look like they’ve been playing with their syphilitic selves, and eating it.

Trump (and Melania) have more class than could be swept into a pile of the last 200 years in D.C.

    Letters To The Editor

Trump description would fit LBJ well

In her Sept. 20th letter Sandy Couch describes Donald Trump as “narcissistic and egotistical.” That is an accurate description of Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) , perhaps the worst president in American history.

Unfortunately, an issue doesn’t disappear simply because it’s been ignored, censored, covered up and concealed for decades.

Also, the legacy of deceit, abuse of power, and political corruption that continues to curse America today! Case in point: “American Experience, “LBJ: Beautiful Texas/My Fellow Americans. A profile of Lyndon B. Johnson.” This recently aired on KSYS Channel 8.1 Aug. 15 and 16, respectively.

Consider the following the itemized links below:

Barr McClellan’s 2003 book: “Blood, Money, and Power: How LBJ Killed JFK”. Also posted at YouTube.

    J. Evett Haley’s 1964 book: “A Texan Looks At Lyndon: A Study In Illegitimate Power.” “How Persecution of American Christians Really Began in The US!” via the Constitution Party of Oregon (www.constitutionpartyoregon.net) posted under “Liberty In The News.”

Trump to Pastors: ‘Christians Have Been Silenced Like a Child” via Pat Robertson’s 700 club confronts the 1954 Johnson Amendment which remains blatant censorship.

“Lyndon Johnson Murdered John F. Kennedy” at YouTube. The oppressive 1968 Gun Control Act LBJ signed into federal legislation and its Nazi/ racist roots long since exposed by JPFO, Inc. at http://www.jpfo.org.

Finally, the Vietnam War (1961-1975). How LBJ and then Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara greatly escalated this “no win war” in Southeast Asia. And at a cost of 58,000 American lives. Lyndon B. Johnson likewise paved the way for Carter, Clinton, and Obama. And while Richard M. Nixon was no saint, he wasn’t even in the ballpark with Lyndon when it came to the above political atrocities, abuses, and crimes against the American people.

    James A. Farmer, Ashland
Now a resident of Merrill, Oregon (Klamath County)

Lest we forget the legacy of deceit, high crimes, and political atrocities perpetrated
against the American public by Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ), including too both the
Earl Warren and Warren Supreme Courts, not to mention Ted Kennedy, Thomas Dodd
    (D) of Connecticut: then LBJ’s treasonous lieutenant in the U.S. Senate and fabricator
of the damnable 1968 Federal Gun Control Act, the corrupt Daley Democratic Machine
in Chicago, Illinois (Cook County) etc! Lest we forget!

    1. avatar Green Mtn. Boy says:

Ah yes, quite a proud record of Lyndon Banes Jackwagon.

      1. avatar Joe R. says:

Recited by a lib farmer from Oregon.

    2. avatar Indiana Tom says:

Trump description would fit LBJ well
Trump is a much classier guy than LBJ.

  20. avatar Ralph says:

Lyndon Johnson killed more Americans that street gangs did. He was a total POS and the worst President of my lifetime. He even made Jimmy Carter look good, and that’s almost impossible.

  21. avatar Kendahl says:

It’s longer than 50 years. FDR wanted to include handguns in the NFA of 1934.

    1. avatar Indiana Tom says:

      True.

    2. avatar DaveW says:

How many recall that just before FDR pushed for the NFA of 1934, there had just been an attempted assassination attempt against the newly elected FDR. That progressives of that era blamed organized crime on guns and alcohol. It was the progressives of the day who pushed through Prohibition. Prohibition was responsible for the rise of organized crime. The NFA only removed arms from law abiding citizens. Organized crime continued to blaze their way through Chicago and other Great Lakes cities. It took a 6 year old child being killed as collateral damage which got the public up in arms against criminals. In the end, the progressive ideology was an utter failure.

  22. avatar Green Mtn. Boy says:

It’s always been a part of the orthodoxy of the cult of Leftism, the complete removal of all firearms from the U S population.

    1. avatar joe R. says:

Can’t do communism with impunity, while you still have the power of (armed Society) FU.

  23. avatar DaveL says:

Gun control has always been about consolidating the power of the ruling class at the expense of the ruled. That hasn’t changed since the days when gun control was sword control. At some point they started using the pretext of preventing crime in general, rather than specifically assassinations and insurrections, but apart from that the message hasn’t changed in literally centuries.

  24. avatar Chris T in KY says:

LBJ was the most racist of modern US presidents. It was president Eisenhower who proposed civil rights legislation asked for by his WW2 black troops. And it was the President of the US senate Lyndon Johnson AND Senator John F Kennedy, another racist pig, that voted against civil rights in the 1950s.

“Robert Sherrill wrote, “The Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed not to control guns but to control blacks…”

    https://www.nraila.org/articles/20030115/the-racist-history-of-handgun-bans-in-a

The Second Amendment was not written for rich white men. Cheap break action shotguns put food on the table of many an american family. And protected them from invaders. People can start out with a hi point, and then work their way to something better. Unless the government wants to make guns really expensive so only the wealthy can afford one????
That is what happened in Tennessee in the 1880s, when only the most expensive hand guns were legal in the state.

  25. avatar kap says:

LBJ and Democratic party did more too tear this nation apart than any one else other than O’Bama!
LBJ Caused 58,000 KIA’s and 1000’s of WIA’s and don’t forget Kent state! All so him and his Democratic buddies could profiteer off of the war that he started by lying about the Tonkin Gulf resolution! his Gun control bill also included an ammo control provision {had too sign for .22 ammo} it was dropped as being to burdensome!
We can thank the 1930’s Chicago Democrats for Gun control along with Boss Tweed of New York, along with a Democrat Named Sullivan!
Democrats are most detrimental to the USA! Raise, taxes, dance in blood of school children, give our money to terrorist groups, give free Food , Medical , Clothing, Housing , Education too any Illegal immigrant that wants it, and NO help too USA citizens who even need it!
They are the ones who promote PC everything, Slander our Flag, disrespect our Veterans. churches, women in general and promote immoral behaviors and pass laws protecting same and relish the fact that they are
    doing so
Democrats cannot do anything except tear this country down!

  26. avatar John M. says:

LBJ initiated “gun control” as a distraction from Vietnam; and because LBJ feared armed rebellion (what we call terrorism, today). Johnson didn’t give a damn about JFK or Bobby getting shot….enough said about that issue. Back in the 60’s crime was not the issue that it is today; but armed rebellion,i.e. The Black Panthers, SDS, and other organizations that “took issue” with LBJ’s policies were front and center.
