According to Jeremy S. The Hateful Eight was a one-hour movie condensed into three hours. Describing the movie’s plot, imdb.com is equally succinct: “In the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.” Rock Island Auction is auctioning off a Colt Single Action Army revolver given to H8ful Eight actor Bruce Dern. Here’s the 411 on a gun seeking $5,500 – $8,500 . . .

Offered here is a rare piece of modern Western movie memorabilia. It is one of ten factory documented engraved SAAs commissioned by famed actor Samuel L. Jackson for members of Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 Western film “The Hateful Eight,” which, besides Jackson, starred Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern.

The accompanying factory letter confirms the caliber, barrel length, finishes, grips and class “C” scroll engraving with the addition of “THE H8FUL EIGHT” on the right side of the barrel. The engraver’s name is “not listed.” It was shipped to Martin B. Retting, Inc., one of the largest firearm stores in California, of Culver City on April 8, 2015, as part of a 10 gun shipment commissioned by Samuel L. Jackson.

This revolver was given to Jackson’s “Hateful Eight” co-star and veteran actor Bruce Dern. In an included August 27, 2016, dated and Bruce Dern signed letter of provenance, it is confirmed that Dern received this revolver on the set of “The Hateful Eight” and “the other leading actors on the set received similar gifts.”

Presented on the letter is a photocopy of a photograph of Dern holding this revolver. In “The Hateful Eight,” Dern played General Sanford “Sandy” Smithers (a.k.a. “The Confederate”).

FYI the grips are plastic and the movie was produced by Harvey Weinstein, who pledged not to make any movies glorifying “gun violence” back in the olden days of 2014. Just so you know.

  1. They can keep it! I wouldn’t buy anything that has been touched by that racist, anti American, son of a bitch, Samuel L. Jackson.

    • Bingo! It also sounds suspiciously like a straw purchase – “Yeah man, these are all for me”!

Then you have S**thole L. Jackson, Bruce Dern, Harvey Weinstein? What a snake pit of subhuman depravity! Until now, l would never have believed that there existed a gun l would refuse to own. Whoop, there it is!!!

  2. An anti-gun guy in a movie with an anti-gun director and producer orders real guns (like they’re just another product) for (mostly) anti-gun actors. Wow. What chutzpah. FOAD and keep your instruments of death.

    • Genuinely curious, when did Sam Jackson switch sides? His response to questions about “gun violence” in the wake of Newtown (in an interview about another Tarantino movie, even): “I don’t think movies or video games have anything to do with it. I don’t think [stopping gun violence] is about more gun control. I grew up in the South with guns everywhere, and we never shot anyone. This [shooting] is about people who aren’t taught the value of life.”

        • I did some research and Samuel L. Jackson is PRO second amendment. He publicly announced he carries a concealed weapon and defended American’s right to bear arms when Obama made his sad speech pleading to pass more gun control following one of the shootings during his time as POTUS. Samuel L Jackson is on record saying this country does NOT need more gun laws and defending Americans rights to own and carry firearms all the way up to current dates. Doesn’t seem like an anti to me. In fact, no doubt he takes a lot of flack for his views from the actual “anti’s” in Hollywood.

Looks to me that he’s saying what more people ought to be saying and that is to stop blaming everyone and everything but yourself for being a thug…put the gun down, man up, start taking responsibility for your own life and get a job instead of being a criminal.

It’s refreshing to see black role models stand up and say “Stop blaming everybody and everything but yourself for being a criminal. Nobody but you put that gun in your hand, put it down and take responsibility for your own choices.”

  3. Nice engraving. Never saw the movie. Love westerns in general, though.

Think I’ll go watch High Plains Drifter now. Or maybe The Wild Bunch. Or maybe The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Or maybe…

    • Also try watching “Unforgiven” (by Clint Eastwood) – possibly the best and most authentic western made. Or “Appaloosa” by Ed Harris – also very authentic. Or “Tombstone” with Kurt Russell – plays a little fast-and-loose with some of the facts regarding the Earp-Cowboy feud, but probably the best depiction of the O.K. Corrall gunfight I’ve seen.

      • Really? Even with Doc Holiday firing a double barrel coach gun three times? Irs an entertaing movie, but accurate? I don’t think so.

        • It’s the Earp movie that most closely follows the legend as told by Earp, himself. Take that for what it’s worth.

I think Johnny Ringo committed suicide, though. I don’t think Doc could have done it, he was in Leadville 2 days prior and 2 days after.

    • He’s in his 80s, maybe he’s had a health scare and doesn’t have family to leave it to he feels would appreciate it? Maybe he just doesn’t want a gun for personal or political reasons? Maybe he had a falling out with Jackson, or they never really got along to begin with? Maybe he’s been irresponsible with his money, and just needs to cash in what he’s got?

I’d say, if you’ve got the money (I don’t), you’re a fan of Tarantino, Jackson, or Dern, or especially the movie involved, just bid on it. Motive for selling it be damned, it’s one of those things that, if you’ve got the means, why not try to own it? Unless, you hate the movie, director, or either actor involved.

      • Why not try to own it? Because I wouldn’t pay thousands of dollars for a gun with plastic grip panels… Seriously, I had cap guns as a kid with nicer grips. Who the fuck lets a high-dollar engraved custom gun leave the shop like that?

It would be like buying a boutique high-end 1911 for several thousand dollars, then hiring a world-class engraver to do a custom engraving job on it, but the keeping the trigger with trashy “star” cutouts on there. It just wouldn’t make any sense, and would open you up to a lot of well-deserved ridicule.

        • You have $5K to spend on a revo lver, but can’t come up with a few hundred for ebony gr ips?

        • I had as close a look at the grips and could not say they’re “cheap plastic.” Possibly Bakelite or a similar, more up to date composite or possibly an engraved hardwood. In any event, easily replaceable.

      • From personal and direct face to face experience on the set of the TV miniseries ‘Space’ (1984?), l can authoritatively say Bruce Dern is an absolute a$sh%le and a selfish pr!€k! It’s unlikely his attitude improved in the intervening 33 years. On the other hand his costar Beau Bridges, was and probably still is an absolute, down to earth gentleman.

  4. Don’t you understand guns are evil (tongue in cheek) What a hypocrite😡

Ran into him at the old airport in Austin (literally ran into him,) had my head down and frankly not paying attention. He grabbed my forearms to stop a collision. I just said “thank you and enjoy your work” He answered thank you.

Here is the thing, if you are not anti 2nd. Amendment in Hollywood. you don’t work!

So who knows what he really thinks?
Just shut up and act. All I know is he was a calm, nice guy.

  5. My question is when will Sam Jackson be arrested for illegal transfering 10 pistols in commiefornia? Oh yeah, he’s an actor…so because he plays pretend all day at work he’s special and better than us common folk.

    • Already noted they were sent to a CA FFL, and full-sized single-action revolvers are exempt from the silly Roster.

      • Being off roster has nothing to do with the question of the transfer law. If this is a cartridge pistol (doh!) it must be transferred through an FFL, and I am pretty certain that gifts to nonfamily and California resident members require the recipient to go through the 4473 and DROS routine. The question I have is how Jackson got a hold of 10 pistols (a) in a few months, and (b) with the California “1 in 30 days” law for handguns.

    • If he went thru an ffl there’s nothing illegal about the transfers. And single action revolvers are apparently not banned by the handgun roster.

It’s a common interwebz myth that we in CA can’t own guns. I got a safe full that says otherwise.

      • Isn’t it still illegal for someone to transfer a pistol directly to another person in california?
” Dern received this revolveron the set of “The Hateful Eight” and “the other leading actors on the set received similar gifts.” ‘
That doesn’t sound like a proper california transfer took place.

        • Ahem.
          AHEM
          A! HEM!

FTFA:” The accompanying factory letter confirms the caliber, barrel length, finishes, grips and class “C” scroll engraving with the addition of “THE H8FUL EIGHT” on the right side of the barrel. The engraver’s name is “not listed.” It was shipped to Martin B. Retting, Inc., one of the largest firearm stores in California, of Culver City on April 8, 2015, as part of a 10 gun shipment commissioned by Samuel L. Jackson.”

AHEM! ” …shipped to Martin B. Retting, Inc., one of the largest firearm stores in California…”

AHEM! Martin B Retting is an FFL.

        • Nothing like opening your mouth and proving you’re a jerkoff huh? WHERE DID IT SAY THAT THE INDIVIDUAL ACTORS TOOK POSESSION AT THE FFL? NOWHERE. If he bought 10 handguns at once, he broke Ca. law….if he handed them out like candy to everyone on the set, he broke Ca. law AGAIN. If the FFL transfered him 10 pistols at one HE broke Ca. law.
You button, are one SIMPLE son of a bitch…but I know I’ve told you that before.

        • They would have had to go to an ffl. Which Jackson had an ffl involved in the process. Or that’s the way I read it. The person recieving the gun has to fill out all the proper forms and do the background check. The gun remains at the ffl for the required waiting period.

The only exception to this rule that I’m aware of is a family transfer. So long as the person recieving the gun is legally allowed to own it all that is required is a notification to doj and a 20 dollar fee. It has been a while since I did a family transfer so the rules may have changed.

Jackson has the resources to put a good attorney on this situation. And I can’t see an upright CA ffl holder not knowing how to avoid the legal pitfalls associated with bad gun transactions.

It sucks. But if you don’t want that magic “felony” tag on your records with all it entails you play by the rules here.

        • Ed, you are accusing a CA FFL of committing 10 felonies. That’s the only explanation that jibes with your farcical account. No matter WHO got the guns, WHEN, WHERE, or HOW, they still were in the possession of an FFL, and for Jackson to purchase them illegally (or for Dern, or anyone elst to) means that the FFL would be selling them illegally.

It ain’t ME thats been hit in the head too many times. Go shake your cane at a cloud.

  6. It does seem kinda shitty for him to sell if I were Sam/Quinton I would of bought an extra to bump DVD sales late in the game. Jackson might not be anti 2A but he is a honkey hatin ignant

  7. Can Samuel L Jackson transfer or even possess a firearm? He is after all a convicted felon, stemming from a hostage incident at Morehouse College in the 60’s. He was convicted of Unlawful Confinement(2nd Degree Felony) for holding MLK’s father and others in a building on Campus.

  8. A movie made to employ over the hill actors (a common practice it seems). I did watch it, but it took awhile, recorded it and took it in small doses. Have no idea why at the end. Left me feeling like I really needed to get a hobby.

    • If Salma Heyek is dancing, with a snake wrapped around her, pouring wine down her leg, while holding a firearm, I don’t care who produces the movie, I’m gonna watch.

      • Playing the Salma Hayek card is hitting below the belt… buckle. Not even fair! Besides, that movie, From Dusk Till Dawn, came out over 20 years ago.

  9. A beautifully made gun (albeit the grips) commissioned by anti-gun douchebags in a crappy movie with anti-gun actors. And it costs a lot. Hard pass.
