New from Magpul: X-22 Backpacker Stock for Ruger 10/22 Takedown

I have a Ruger 10/22 Takedown and absolutely love it. So much so that I SBR’ed it and turned it into the smallest, quietest piece of awesome I own. But there’s still a problem: the stock is neither pretty nor ergonomic. It can definitely be improved. Thankfully the folks at Magpul are on the case and have just released the X-22 Backpacker stock for the Ruger 10/22 Takedown.

It’s cool that the X-22 looks better, but the big advantage here is its functionality. The 10/22 Takedown comes apart into two pieces for easy transport. Magpul’s designed the replacement stock so that the forend snaps into place in a cutout in the buttstock. That keeps everything in one neat package so you can throw it in your backpack and not worry about the barrel falling out somewhere along the way. The top of the stock also opens for ammo and magazine storage.

The Henry AR-7 survival rifle has been about the best solution for a one-piece compact survival rifle. Magpul, though, may have just changed the game. Needless to say I’m already on the list to get one…once they actually start full production. Stay tuned for a review.

I honestly cannot figure out why no one else is doing the Kel-Tec SUB-2000 approach with a simple folding carbine. That design would work FANTASTICALLY on a carbine chambered in .22 LR.

I’ve got a sub2k gen2 tricked out with all sorts of upgrades, and it’s relegated to fun range toy status. I’ve given keltec several chances on almost all their products and the KSG (late 2014 model) is the only one I trust to function in dire circumstances, and it’s only because I’ve run it hard and had 100% reliability. The rest are toys. The RFB is a slightly dangerous toy that kaboomed when I dared to click the gas knob slightly above full open.

For my truck gun or other hard use gun, it won’t have the name keltec stamped on the side. If another company wanted to adopt the general design of a folding sub2k/22LR, but substitute aluminum in place of all the polymer in critical areas, I’d buy one.

That makes far to much sense. lol

for any manufactures reading, I’d buy one as well…but not keltech’s..ew.

My S2k blew apart in my hands. No thanks

I’m so getting one of these.

The TOP pick shows it works with a bull barrel too. Can you confirm?

    1. avatar Jon in CO says:

According to the Email blast I got for this the other day, they said it works with ALL barrels from Ruger including the SBX? Something like that. But yes, will take the .920 bbl no issues. Also designed for suppressor to stay on the barrel during takedown.

      1. avatar John says:

I really hope itll work with the sb-x. Seems like the issue would be getting the forend to stick into the stock without the suppressor cage getting in the way.

        1. avatar Jon in CO says:

The page or the email I got says it will work with the tac solutions specifically. So you should be good to go.

    2. avatar Doktor says:

The stock has a reversible barrel tray for both the stock pencil and a bull.

    Getting one ASAP

Just more proof that the Ruger 10/22 can not be beat.

I have a 10/22 and love it, but the only thing that makes the 10/22 so special is the massive after market for it IMO.

      1. avatar Jeff K says:

What makes it so special is its reliability, accuracy, foolproof mag design & affordability, or otherwise the huge aftermarket for it would not exist. A timeless design that has well stood the test of time. I see very old 10/22’s that could have been maintained better that are still reliable, accurate tack drivers.

      2. avatar BDub says:

..but that’s exactly WHY there is such a massive after-market for it.

  6. avatar Hoplopfheil says:

If HPA passes (dare I say “when?), I will have a hard time deciding between a takedown with this stock, or the American Rimfire (the OD green w/ threaded barrel).

    1. avatar Jeff K says:

      Why not both?

  7. avatar Jack Moore says:

I love this, I love Magpul, I’m still mad at Hickenlooper for kicking them out of Colorado

    1. avatar Doktor says:

Hickenlooper was mad at CO first.

    2. avatar Jon in CO says:

If there were still here, I’d easily give my left nut to be employed there. Sweeping floors, cleaning windows, whatever I had to do.

  8. avatar tsbhoa.p.jr says:

maybe this will fit the charger takedown pieces.

  9. avatar Specialist38 says:

I want a stock for 10/22 that holds 2 bx25 magazines out of the way. At least 2 bx15s.

Come to think of it..why not one for mini 14 that holds 2 10s in reserve?

    You build it…I’ll buy it.

    1. avatar Jon in CO says:

My thought was “could I get a BX25 in the tray instead of 3-10rd?”

  10. avatar Charles says:

Where do I sign up for this beauty?

  11. avatar Accur81 says:

    Looks like a cool upgrade.
