BREAKING: Police Shoot Houston Mall Shooter

screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-8-07-30-am

Six people were injured when a shooter opened fire at a southwest Houston shopping center on Monday morning, police and fire officials said. “The suspected shooter has been shot by our officers,” Houston Police tweeted. “No reports of other suspects at this time.” foxnews.com:

A fire official said some people were shot while inside their cars and the conditions of those wounded was varied. Several people were hit with glass fragments from shattering car windows.

“We have several with extremity injuries,” an official told reporters. “We have a couple that are more serious.”

One witness told ABC13 the shooter fired three or four shots into the front window of her car and also shot the side window of the vehicle.

Although the shooter’s motivation is unknown, only one media outlet is reporting the fact that he was black. I wonder why that is . . .

Fair enough. So far, I’m liking my odds.

          What we know…

Disgruntled “black” lawyer. Me thinks that the chances of Islamic involvement are rather good. The fact that they refuse to release any more information about the shooter is very telling.

        2. avatar jwtaylor says:

          Except he’s not black.

        3. avatar pwrserge says:

Initial reports are often wrong. Given the details released… Yeah, I’m liking my chances even more. Now we can rule out BLM style bullshit. Desai?

        4. avatar jwtaylor says:

“Initial reports are often wrong.” There were no report(s) here. Literally one British news site said that one witness said it was a black man. HPD, nor any Houston news outlets ran with that, and no witness was named saying he was black. The line in the original article stating “only one media outlet is reporting the fact that he was black” should have been the flashing red light on the bullshit meter there.

Yup… Because Durka Durkas are not a major portion of the Indian population. It’s not like they have had a couple of wars with their more crazy northern neighbors or anything. You know, the ones who hid Bin Laden for a decade.

Nah. 6:30 AM Monday morning in a strip mall? Terrorists usually go for more target-rich environments. This sounds more like someone was lying in wait to settle a personal beef with someone who worked there.

      I’ll take that bet.

This isn’t a “mall” mall. It’s just a chintzy strip mall. Early morning? Corner of Weslayan & Bissonnet? Just another drug deal gone bad, not terrorism.

    8. avatar Theo Braunohler says:

You’re going to lose five bucks.

This is a shithole of an area and gang shootings like this happen all the time.

      1. avatar Chip in Florida says:

“…This (Weslayan at Bissonet) is a shithole of an area…”

I know it’s been over twenty years since I lived in that area, on Sunset behind the Randalls. I remember that area to be considered on the high-side of Middle Class, has it gone downhill that much?

        1. avatar JR says:

No. the above commenters are just ignorant. That intersection is sandwiched between West U, one of the wealthiest municipalities in the country, and a section of Houston where new houses sell for $1.5m + .

      2. avatar JR says:

Theo, you must live in Katy or the Woodlands or something far removed from Houston. Or, you are just plain ignorant of that part of town.

    1. avatar Curtis in IL says:

You can buy a Ruger on Amazon? Who knew?

      1. avatar Swarf says:

Oh what a wonderful world that would be…

  3. avatar Cliff H says:

Now that their protector and apologist is a useless lame duck I expect the gloves to come off this Christmas season. Whatever other motives may or may not be involved with these shooters they are showing the world the inherent weakness in our malls and other soft targets. It is clear that certain groups around the world will be watching and learning from this.

They have already succeeded in preventing me from shopping in malls unless I have no other choice, and then I always go with 11 on board and 34 in two extra mags. In Nevada “Gun Free Zone” signs have no force of law and can only get you politely ejected by management. In the event of an attack I may not get out alive, but I do not expect to stay behind without company.

It occurs to me, however, that in light of these mall attacks and other harbingers of bad times to come we would be wise to carefully remain concealed as if not the gun muggle public at least (hopefully) mall security will be more vigilant and prone to panic at the sight of any weapon on the premises.

    1. avatar Greg says:

Dude, there are 1100 malls, and 47000 shopping centers in the US. The risk of going shopping is miniscule. This isn’t Afghanistan, no matter how much the liberal media plays up the violence.

    2. avatar uncommon_sense says:

      Cliff H,

Why let terrorists win? Go shopping at a shopping mall if that floats your boat.

As for personal security at a shopping mall, may I suggest two “enhanced” options, either of which you can carry discreetly in a properly sized computer bag:
      (1) Kel-Tec SUB-2000 carbine chambered in .40 S&W
      (2) revolver chambered in .44 Magnum (large frame with 6-inch barrel)

The SUB-2000 carbine has several advantages:
      (a) Discreet carry when folded in half (16 x 7 inches)
      (b) Weighs four pounds and is easy to carry in a bag.
      (c) Long barrel enables accurate shooting at 100 yards.
      (d) Muzzle velocity of light bullets exceed stout .357 Magnum.
      (e) Accepts 22 and 29-round magazines (Glock compatible versions).

A full-size revolver with a 6-inch barrel in .44 Magnum has advantages as well:
      (a) light single-action trigger when needed for accurate shots
      (b) longer sight radius for more accurate shots even to 100 yards
      (c) devastating terminal ballistics
      (d) even more compact and discreet than a SUB-2000 carbine

Either option puts you on much more equal footing with one or even multiple terrorists in a large shopping mall.

      1. avatar DanC says:

Why are you worrying about terrorist in a shopping mall ? Hasn’t Obama turn the malls into gun free zones ?

      2. avatar David B says:

Your comment made me laugh! I hope it’s sarcasm. If you’re at a mall with a rifle folded in half and a bunch of mags ready-to-rock and you get caught, you will probably be charged with “going armed to the terror of the public” at least here in NC.
If you do decide this is the best way to go, may I recommend ankle carry?

        1. avatar uncommon_sense says:

No sarcasm at all. I like to have an effective means to protect myself and my family when I am out and about. Your position on risks and preparation is as relevant as my opinion of your choice of furniture in your home.

As for “going armed to the terror of the public”, everyone driving a car could suddenly veer into a crowd and kill dozens of people. Shall we charge every driver with “going armed to the terror of the public”?

More to the point, how can someone claim that I am “going armed to the terror of the public” when I am discreetly carrying ammunition and an inoperative firearm … and there is no evidence that I have any intent of attacking anyone?

Police/prosecutors have to establish that a suspect had the means, motive, opportunity, and intent to commit a crime before they go after someone. Does your statement mean that standard does not apply when firearms are involved?

        2. avatar Stinkeye says:

Note that he said you’d likely be charged, not convicted. With bullshit arbitrary crimes like “going armed to the terror of the public”, all they need to charge you is basically somebody who said they got scared by seeing your gun. Or just that someone *might* have been.

You might end up beating the charge, after spending thousands of dollars on lawyer’s fees, but that’s not really the cop’s problem when he’s loading you into the back of his car.

There was a case just last year of a soldier at Ft. Bragg taking his rifle and military gear to a photography studio in a mall to get some photos taken, with predictable results: people got spooked, cops were called, mall locked down, guy catches a GATTTOTP charge. The guy was clearly not intending to terrorize people, but he still got his life turned into a mess over it.

If you ever have to use that computer-bag rifle on a spree shooter, make sure you drop it like a hot rock at the first sign of police. When they come on the scene, anybody holding a long gun is very, very likely to get ventilated immediately.

  4. avatar A Brit in TX says:

Apparently it was ‘a black male with a revolver’ and it was in a grocery store parking lot (there is a strip mall there, it is Houston after all!). Also I understand the grocery store (Randalls) has a Wells Fargo bank in it that has been robbed a number of times. Not saying that this was the case here though…..

I wish a speedy recovery to the 6 (or so) victims.

    1. avatar Jonathan - Houston says:

Meh. I’m guessing nobody who will be missed.

      1. avatar jwtaylor says:

Why? These were just people driving to work in their cars.

    2. avatar A Brit in TX says:

Yes, I’m replying to my own comment. Apparently I made a mistake in my original comment about the perp, that will teach me to take at face value early media ‘reporting’!

      1. avatar Ing says:

You ain’t kidding. Whatever the media says in the first few hours of breathless coverage, assume it’s wrong, because at least half of it will be.

You can find accurate information a couple days later…if it matters at all. Which it usually doesn’t in the larger scheme of things.

    3. avatar Doug says:

I’ve been following this off and on as reports came up on ABC 13’s app. No references at all to the shooter’s ethnicity.
But I can tell you this: First reports were of his Porsche, yes his Porsche being “full of guns”; later, two.
One report actually seriously said the guy had a “Tommy gun”! I kid you not.
This afternoon, reports of “Nazi paraphernalia” on him, and in his car.

Next they’ll be saying he had ray guns and photon torpedoes.

      1. avatar jwtaylor says:

So the Thompson and the Nazi gear turns out to be true. Pulled from pics at the scene and announced during the HPD press conference. Thompson was bought in 2009.

      2. avatar Doug says:

Saw a separate report today (same channel, ABC 13, saying that he had a “submachine gun”. No word on Al Capone or his boys.

  5. avatar Tom in Oregon says:

Random thought when I saw this…
Who goes to a mall first thing Monday morning?

    1. avatar RockOnHellChild says:

      Old people for their exercise.

My wife and I like to walk the malls sometimes to people watch… It’s better than Walmart, given the right part of town.

    2. avatar Stinkeye says:

      Headline’s wrong – it’s a grocery store shopping center, not a mall.

    3. avatar Andrew Lias says:

Heard it was by a Petco. My wife forgets to buy the damn dog food I get stuck going out for it first thing in the morning otherwise the dog won’t stop bothering people.

  6. avatar Citizen says:

Not that I mall shop all that much but when I do I always carry as it is not a “No Self-defense Zone”
but then again I always carry outside the home and inside.

Been doing this since long before carrying indoors became something magical to Millennials.

  7. avatar WilliamB says:

Black perp shooting at white drivers. Obama: “Let’s not rush to judgement. However, this does demonstrate the need for improved background checks, closing the gun show loophole, and a total ban on assault weapons.”

  13. avatar TX Gun Gal says:

Have not been in a shopping mall since some gang bangers bust steering wheel cover to steal my Pontiac Firebird. By the time I reported it to Mall Cop, someone had called it in as a automobile stalled on Mopac South, it had run out of gas. LEO asked what would I have done if I had run out of gas? Told him I knew how much gas I had in the tank and knew there was a gas station close to Barton Creek Mall. Also showed me how to start the car until I could get it fixed. Hate Mall, love good cops

  14. avatar Coffee Addict says:

People still Christmas shop in a mall? good gods. I haven’t stepped foot in a retail store during the holidays in about 15 years. Amazon FTW. if I can’t order it online, you aren’t getting anything except Christmas cookies.

    1. avatar Ing says:

Christmas shopping? It’s not even Halloween!

  15. avatar Porter says:

Disgruntled lawyer , Porsche at scene , he DRT . Looks like suicide by cop.

  16. avatar former water walker says:

Black males shoot people all the time in Chiraq. At strip malls too. What I’m wondering is the near total lack of coverage of the Turk who murdered 5at a MALL in Washington. A real-life Turkish immigrant. Nary a peep here(except for me). Aloha snackbar?

    1. avatar John in CT says:

What you’re missing is that this wasn’t “Chiraq”, but rather a fairly affluent part of Houston, a mile from Rice University.

I’m not sure how and if that changes things, but it’s not a 1:1 comparison to the poorer sections of Chicago.

      1. I’ve been in every neighborhood in Chicago. Plenty of rich one too. And sometimes people get shot or STABBED in the head in the GOLD Coast…(Google it). Or in Millennium Park by a gangbanger(Google THAT).

  17. avatar Jim Barrett says:

Unfortunately, this narrative does not exactly help the gun rights argument. Again, it was police not a gun toting citizen who dealt with the threat. The pro-gun control version of this story will go something like this: “Easy access to guns is how the suspect was able to get a gun and use it on other innocent bystanders. Fortunately highly trained police officers quickly arrived on scene and dealt with the problem. This is yet another example of why gun laws should be tightened and firearms restricted to police and military.”

Just wait a bit. If the version above has not already started circulating, it will.

  18. avatar damion cocchi says:

Of course left out was the “Guaranteed Victim Zone” (aka Gun Free Zone).

Mass shootings have become all too common in Obama’s America.
More specifically, they’ve become all to common in gun-free zones.

    1. avatar jwtaylor says:

This shooting was outdoors and not in a gun free zone.

  19. avatar Porter says:

Media Firearm Reporters ……..( M F r’s ) …experts that they are , are sure the bad guy used different guns. They heard ” different ‘ sounds on a crummy cell phone video. And yes , ABC 13 actually said — ” Laser rifle ” .

  20. avatar jwtaylor says:

“Although the shooter’s motivation is unknown, only one media outlet is reporting the fact that he was black. I wonder why that is . . .”
Probably because they didn’t want to peddle uncorroborated and incorrect information. Because he’s not black.

  21. avatar Ralph says:

After practicing law for over 30 years I can state without fear of contradiction that if every disgruntled lawyer in America was to shoot up a strip mall, there wouldn’t be a plate glass window left in the whole country.

We may never know, but there does seem more here than meets the eye.

    1. avatar Stinkeye says:

If all the lawyers shot up all the shitty strip malls and were then put down by police like this asshole was, that’s two birds with one stone. Talk about making America great again…

  22. avatar John in CT says:

Wow, I was in that same shopping center at that same grocery store a week ago preparing for my move to that neighborhood (OK, about 2 miles away) in a month. Hopefully this isn’t the start of bigger things to come, but if it is I will be armed as soon as it is lawful and feasible to be so.

  23. Another day, Another Mass shooting.

As usual, This does not happen in europe, canada, japan and australia on a daily basis.

And it’s in that war-torn hellhole called texas.

They have a high-per capita murder and suicide rate than NY, CA, IL, NJ.

    1. avatar jwtaylor says:

Must be why people are leaving those states in record numbers to move to Texas.
Also, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports, your statement is clearly false. IL is 5.3 per 100k, Texas is 4.4.
