“In conclusion, we found (a) strong association between social gun culture and gun ownership. 1. In conclusion, we found (a) strong association between social motorcycle culture and Harley Davidson ownership. Motorcycle cultures may need to be considered for public health strategies that aim to change motorcycle ownership in the USA.

    • *there’s a correlation between oldness and Harley ownership. Out of all the people my age who I took Motorcycle Ed with (early 20s), about 1/20 wanted to ride a Harley.

But what I want to know is of what manner of change she speaks. Arming more Mass, CT, and RI citizens?

        • But, she can’t mean that she wants to change legal gun ownership, can she? They keep telling us that all their “gun safety” measures are geared toward keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals.

      • I’m with you on that one buddy. Unfortunately I’m getting old so I think I’m trading off my Yamaha R1 for a Triumph Speed Triple. Got a few more decades to go though before I resort to riding Harleys. Maybe when I’m 90.

        • I’ve always been a fan of standards and big dual-sports myself. At the moment there’s a Suzuki DL1000 (old version, not the re-release in the garage). When I get to “that point” I’d think about maybe a V-Star or a Valkyrie.

        • I used to ride way to hard when I had sportbikes. I ride a VTX now, slowed down and couldn’t be happier….

        • “I used to ride way to hard when I had sportbikes. I ride a VTX now, slowed down and couldn’t be happier….”

          Joel, you live in PA.

The roads there are so lousy you couldn’t ride fast if you wanted to…

          🙂

        • Geoff, if you want a smooth ride in PA, you drive on the shoulders. (I grew up in PA…)

    • That figure is bogus. They are counting the 110 million legal gun owners (adults) against ALL 300 million Americans including toddlers and the geriatric. If you limit the numbers to the 160 million VOTING ELIGIBLE Americans it’ more like 66% of voting age people own guns. Cooked numbers.

      • Great point. But can’t you just tell from the look on her face that she wants to help you ? /sarc off

    • My first thought. but then my second thought was that most academics are utterly lacking in common sense; indeed, common sense is more often than not inversely related to IQ. The people can figure out the most complicated things, but have trouble with the obvious. Never could figure out why that is.

      • Yep, I know some folks like that. One in particular that is brilliant with computer programs, math and English. But when his wife died a few years ago he asked his sister, my wife at that time, if she had any tips on meeting another woman. She told him that bathing on a regular schedule would probably help.

  2. Or, or, or…It’s not the guns or a the “gun culture”, but the thugs and the thug culture, and those with serious mental health problems and no help for them, but nope, it’s always the tool and never the person.

    • Exactly. She claims that most gun owners are white men over 55, I guess because they’re the ones robbing liquor stores in the inner cities. That or they’re the ones who still have land line phones to answer the surveyor with.

      • “That or they’re the ones who still have land line phones to answer the surveyor with.”

        Right There…

        I think you’re on to something, Gov…

      • That, and there is another factor. A good friend of mine is black. This guy is the most honest and giving person I know. He is someone who will come to the rescue of a perfect stranger without a second thought. He is rather conservative and brilliant. I have taken him to the range and we have talked about conceal carry many times. While growing up, it was drilled into him that guns are evil, and carrying a gun identifies a person as the devils minion. The point is that the propaganda that some groups are subjugated to is intense, so naturally, their gun ownership will be low, and even if they do own a gun, they are not likely to admit it.

    • That’s right. They just lumped thugs in with people of the gun – again. Is the problem criminal thugs? No – its all gun owners.

      • Don’t forget it is also a public health issue. So it’s a public health issue that we are *all* thugs with guns. So does that mean we are responsible for the common cold? The flu? Oh! I know! We are the reason for chicken pox!

        • this is focus of Obamacare… create a systrm with absolute control and call anything you dont agree with a health issue.

thought is a health issue, Aging people use more resources… oh oh thats a problem easily solved in their eyes… only prescribe life shorting drugs and pain meds.

now the TPP ta da! indtant NWO solution. it even has controls over Obamacare. once our bordered are gone, the US will cover everyone. Our Boy King slipped up 3 years ago when he said the ACA/Healthcare was a right for everyone world wide.

  3. “There is little question that the high prevalence of gun ownership in the USA contributes to the burden of firearm-related injury.”

Really? And automobile ownership contributes to highway injuries, tables sas con tribute to table saw injuries…….. what an absurd correlation to make… right on par with any statement by the gun grabbers .

    • “Because it’s for sure some soccer mom around here is more worried about your range than she is about the pool in her backyard or the drain cleaner under her sink”

      – Quote from movie: “Jack Reacher”

    • ‘There is little question that the high prevalence of being female in the USA contributes to the burden of emotional anti-gun mentality.’

Because being female minded contributes to an anti-gun culture?

  4. Breaking news! States that aren’t gun friendly have a lower gun ownership rate! Yes, THOSE gun owners are MUCH more afraid of restrictions and confiscation, so NO they aren’t going to jump up and say “Yes, I own guns, and I enjoy going to the gun range and talking with other like minded gun-folk”.

Good grief! If you are going to study something, perhaps you better immerse yourself in the actual thing that you are studying. Oh, wait, guns are too scary!

  5. “In conclusion, we found (a) strong association between social victim culture and violence. Cultures that do not place value on self defense, self reliance or personal responsibility may need to be considered for public health strategies that aim to change the USA.”

    Fixed it for you.

  6. A-G-I-T-P-R-O-P

‘…other studies show suicide rates go up with access to guns.’ And then she links to another NBC story that says that in 2013 suicides with firearms among 10-19 year olds hit a 12 year high and then claimed that states with more guns have more suicides with firearms (like, duh). They also note that overall suicides in that group rose 34 percent between 2007 and 2013, but they never mention how much suicides with firearms rose or the overall suicide rate in states that have guns vs. those that don’t. Numbers don’t mean anything without context but they figure they can throw out a few meaningless statistics to push their ‘guns are bad’ agenda.

    • Well, sure.

Critical thinking, mathematical savvy … these are largely becoming self-taught. If at all.

    • Another face palm worthy exert from the article;
“And a controversial study released earlier this month by the Violence Policy Center used FBI data to show that 259 people used a gun to kill someone else in self-defense in 2012, compared to 8,342 criminal homicides involving a gun.”
Ya know, because you’re not really defended unless the other guy is dead, instead of say, the assailant fleeing at the sight of the gun.

      • Yes, we should all make sure that the next time we use a gun in defense of our lives, our property or the lives of our loved ones we leave a corpse just to pad the stats. That’ll learn ’em.

    • Yep. Like Holder said in 1995 before he became the Attorney General for the Just Us Department. He was talking as a planning and strategy session about beating the drum in schools and popular culture and sending the message that guns are bad and changing the American culture about how they look at guns.

“We need to Brain wash people about guns in a different way”.

The educated elites using the schools, the media, and TV to fundamentally change America.

      • If they can’t change voters’ minds, then they’ll just change the voters. Hence the push for open borders, illegal alien amnesty, and a path to Democrat Party membership.

  7. So much for multiculturalism, eh?

Despicable leftist hypocrites’ march to tyranny continues apace.

  8. She’s mouthing the strategy that is slowly being implemented: use the fraudulent field of psychiatry to subjectively classify gun owners( and any potential dissident group) as mentally ill.

    • It’s a culture war. The liberal/progressives have pretty much had free reign as to implementing most of their agenda, except for gun ownership.

As a libertarian, I believe they have won because of all the issues, most come down to freedom of association and equal treatment under the law. Regardless of whether one agrees with all the issues.

But I believe they have been losing the culture battle about gun ownership as looked at as a positive by a majority of Americans is because ultimately, gun ownership is truly about personal freedom. Personal empowerment. Freedom from oppression, freedom from being a victim, that transcends race, gender, religious or atheist belief, or sexual preference.

This is the one of the few areas that the POTG can say without hesitation, or self-doubt, we are standing and defending freedom for everyone. This is the one area that also defines a politician or a people. If you support gun ownership, you stand for freedom, if you are against the free carrying of a gun by all law abiding people, you stand for enslavement.

Boom, no greys, freedom or slavery.

So just as the Civil war started because of a number of issues, the battle cry that unified a people was the cry about ending slavery, so is the culture war we are in now. There are a number of issues, but the one that is clear, bright and without uncertainty. The one issue that can unite many people with different views and cultural beliefs, is the Second Amendment and the Right To Keep and Bear Arms.

Do you support freedom or do you support being enslaved?

      • “…or do you support being enslaved?”

I guess that depends on the bribe (utopia, entitlements) being offered to low information sheeple who do not recognize that the ‘bribe’ can go away at any time.

The anti’s leadership gets it, the followers don’t.

  9. I think their figures are very different from reality. I think at least half of the people who own guns wouldn’t admit that they own guns to a stranger. Would you? I would figure a stranger asking me about guns would be with the government assessing how to take them or from an anti-gun outfit that also wants to take them. I don’t know of any houses in my neighborhood that doesn’t have one or more loaded guns in their home. Most have a concealed carry permit they seldom use (my daughter got one “to protect her constitutional rights”).

    • “I think at least half of the people who own guns wouldn’t admit that they own guns to a stranger. Would you?”

It really depends on the context.

At our local farmer’s market in a gun-friendly state if it happens to come up in conversation? Probably would. If the asker started to get too specific about what kinds, how many, etc., that might ring warning bells but otherwise no real concerns.

While visiting California or New York City, being approached by a pollster in a mall? Nope.

      • Chatting at local gun store, farmers market, hardware store, sure
        Pollster in a mall, maybe.
        Anonymous phone call surveyor? Never.

  10. ISIS wants to change U.S. gun culture, so do the Chinese, Russians, Iranians, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan. . .

You get them to give up their guns, and you give up yours, then you can come for mine, and better bring the II Marines.

PS she got more reader/viewership here, and faster, then she would ever have achieved on her own. Hope TTAG is getting a kick-back, otherwise, let that sh_t die-on-the-vine.

  11. Interesting that they put the “Young Guns” video in the middle of this report. Instead of using it to highlight the positive aspect of shooting sports, they seem to be using it to scare the pearl clutchers about the growing epidemic of “gun culture”.

  12. What do you expect from a 1st Gen American? don’t know a thing about the United states or its culture!
We have so many weak kneed citizens that all they do is go along to get ahead! especially 1st Gen!
As an armed American made Honda rider and Combat Vet I say! I fought for the right for you to say what ever you want But I have the right too respond verbally any way I want!
I would Say get your Facts straight! of STFU, this Mealy mouthed BS sound like a page out of Hooker’s for ISIS,
    !

    • Don’t hold back cap, tell us how you REALLY feel!!.
..thanks for your service by the way…

  13. One in three? Americans (not “adult Americans”)? But didn’t E J Dionne or someone say the other day that gun ownership was on the decline? Wow, imagine if it was on the upswing, E J…

  14. How exactly are you going to change a culture that you openly despise? AND, if you believe her 1/3 American gun ownership stat is true, that is an incredible amount of people to convince. She probably thinks it’ll work because “feelings” work to convince her audience.

Using similar logic I can solve world hunger w/out anyone paying for my study: if we can just give hungry people food they will no longer be hungry. Don’t worry about the details.

  15. Hearing comments such as this is one of the reasons I’m unwilling to “compromise.”

    • Probably closer to eight million at this point, and those who do own quite a few each. And we’re doing our damnedest to preach the gospel of the gun so that eight million becomes nine, nine becomes ten and so on.

  16. Did anyone else get a chill reading that blurb? Orwellian dystopia, here we come.

“Traditional American values may need to be considered for public health strategies that aim to improve compliance with government in the USA.”

  17. “Gun cultures may need to be considered for public health strategies that aim to change gun ownership in the USA.”

I think it’s clear – they don’t want a world without guns, they want a world without gun owners.

  18. 1 in 3? Heck, that’s just the people that answered you honestly, hunnie. I sure wouldn’t have. It aint none of your gun-grabbin business what I own or what I don’t.

“Many doctors and public health experts argue that gun ownership is a health question” — What??? Do you mean gun violence??? What the hell are you talking about lady??? I have sure never heard that one before. Now mere gun ownership is a public health issue? HAHAHAHA.

You people are insane. Maybe you need to take your soccer mom head out of your ass and look at the world, hunnie. You worried about the well-being of your children?? – maybe you should be a little more concerned about the global conflagration going on right now, huh? Ukraine/Russia, Syria/Iraq/ISIS, Egypt/Israel/Lebanon/Saudi/Yemem, Iran, North Korea, China/Vietnam/Singapore/Taiwan …the whole damn world is on fire right now and could explode at any time. Nuclear war is being openly discussed and threatened in terms of a realistic – and even winning – option now. Tactical nukes are flourishing and being re-deployed everywhere. ISIS is carving heads off by the thousands… But they are not droning on about that in the news huh? That doesn’t affect you in your posh little urban enclave…. yet… does it? The Media wants to keep you completely distracted from the utter chaos that is the world and the utter failure that is our current administration’s foreign policy – and you play right along like a sheep. Take a look at yourself. Take a look at the world. Open your eyes. You are being deceived and distracted.

  19. Using phrases and verbiage like POTG comes across as cultish , playing right into the hands of the people who want to disarm you.

    • Umm Pg2, I figure you’re talking to me. Perhaps using POTG is “Cultish”.

My first response is one of defensiveness. Out of all that I wrote, the only comment is a negative one from you. For future reference, pointing out some positive aspects or points, while sharing some negatives, would make it easier for myself and probably others, in accepting you posts.

In the end, your right, even if we call ourselves or others calls us a “Gun Culture”, The gun is only a personal defense tool, that has changed over time, through history, as to the definition of a free person. But freedom remains the same, regardless of the tool.

So you said ” phrases and verbiage” as being “cultish” but then you only point to POTG as an example. So I’m curious if there are other “phrases and verbiage” that could be construed as “cultish”?

      • Thomas, I wasn’t singleing you or anyone else out, it’s a seemingly common term here, andI have commented on its usage before.

  20. So, to recapitulate people who like guns enjoy the company of other people who like guns? Great Scott! that is some groundbreaking stuff. This dwarfs the Wright Bros, and NASA, well, when it still was NASA. Vascular surgery? A mere bagatelle compared to the incandescent brilliance of this budding genius.

Yet another mind numbing example of some really heavy thoughts from the female progressive mind. Molon Labe, princess, and like the song said, we’re open 24 hours a day.

  21. Sounds like she needs to join up with the ‘Elitist Urbanite Soccer Moms for a Fictional World (of Rainbows, Unicorns and Bluebirds on our shoulder)’ …or whatever they are calling themselves these days…

  22. Gun cultures may need to be considered for public health strategies that aim to change gun ownership in the USA.” Obozo is working on that through dictatorial orders as she writes.

  23. 47.9% of North Dakotans own a gun..

..and 52.1% lied in the phone to the surveyor

This lady should expand this study to contrast gun ownership and rape incidence between her home country India and the US. We don’t have women getting gang raped on public busses and at grocery stores here. If she don’t like it, gtfo.

  24. LOL That was brilliant: ‘there a nexus between those who like guns and gun ownership’ …Yay! What a revelation!

Now you just have to target that group of oh, maybe 100 million American citizens or so, so they can be forced comply with your ideology, right?

Did you actually get paid for that?

    hahahahaha

  25. @Daniel Zimmerman:

The first two sentences from the article:

A new study aimed at figuring out who owns gun in the United States and why suggests that about a third of Americans have at least one.

Most are white males over the age of 55, and a “gun culture” is closely linked with ownership, the team at Columbia University reports.

If 1/3 of Americans own at least one gun, and “most” of those people are white males over 55, then that means that AT LEAST 1/6th of Americans are white males over 55 who own a guns. Does that even sound remotely plausible?

According to Wikipedia (I know), only 28.4% of Americans are white and 55 or older, INCLUDING WOMEN:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States#2013_birth_data_by_race

There are vastly more women than men in the upper age groups, but for argument’s sake, if we say that they’re even that means that 14.2% of Americans are men over 55. And yet, this article starts off by saying that AT LEAST 16.67% (1/6) of Americans are not only men over 55, but also make up most of America’s gun owners. For the article to be even remotely accurate, MORE THAN 100% of American men over 55 would need to own one or more guns.

The article fails spectacularly in the first two sentences. There’s no need to go any further, IMHO.

    • haha, right? Good luck with that, sweetheart! I think she’d be better off just breaking down and coming to the range with me for an afternoon of good, wholesome, drug-free, American-style fun.

  26. There is an ongoing trend among conservative and libertarian folks (likely gun owners): Smart phone tells them it is “XYZ Research” calling so they don’t answer and let it go to voice mail. Opinion research companies are in real trouble because more and more people are refusing to take their calls or call blocking them. I use an app called Truecaller, but there are others. Once refusal to take calls from these polling companies reaches a tipping point, their claim to accuracy starts to go out the window and their reputations with it.

  27. Well, what’s the big deal then? They say that all the white males will soon be dead and replaced by good, Democrat minorities so then they don’t have to worry about guns, right? Oh, wait, its all a bunch of lies so they can disarm us and then start the hard-core stuff they really want to do, but can’t because we’re heavily armed.

    • Another example of: “I messed up my own country so badly with this idiotic hateful way of thinking that I can’t stand to live there, so I immigrated to the USA so I could screw it up, too.”

  28. Wait — if it’s true that almost all gun owners are +55 white males, and it’s also true that only 1/3 of Americans own guns, that doesn’t leave a lot of guns owned by black people, Hispanic people, Asian people, women of any ethnicity etc.

So guys, don’t be so selfish. Share the guns. For the children.

  29. Duh… Make something socially unaccepted and it becomes socially unaccepted….

The back side of the argument that calls Open Carry protesters “Chipotle Ninjas.”

Once something is made socially unacceptable through lies and propaganda, there is not clean, pretty, happy way to undo it. So, the oppressed then become self-oppressing by mocking and deriding those among themselves who get off their butts and do something socially unacceptable that rocks the boat to prove there is no logic behind the accepted, oppressive social convention.

The precursor tot he legislative process is conditioning the voters to believe in self-oppression for [insert lie reason here], so they’ll vote for self-oppression.

Jeez guys, they’re spelling it right out for us every time they use the phrase “gun culture.”

“Brainwash first, then get our way.” It’s a segregated culture war based on promoting hate for Demographic A to pretend that they care about Demographic B. Democrats haven’t changed at all. They’re still all about segregation and sowing the seeds of division between We the People. Always have been, always will be.

They come right out and say it and you still can’t figure it out?

  30. I haven’t read the article in question, but I bet I can summarize its final position: We, the progressive left, have defined your culture and are planning new ways to destroy it.

    Did I get it right?
